In this study, a novel FONs-based sensor P-M(w) was synthesized using 1-Pyrenecarboxaldehyde and L-methionine through facile hydrothermal strategy. The fluorescence emission peaks of the acquired P-M(w) would show specific changes after the addition of Hg 2+ due to interfering the PET process and inducing nano-structure conformational rigidification of P-M(w). Notably, the water-soluble FONs-based sensor was firstly used to detect Hg 2+ in tea samples providing a new material choice for the fluorescence sensor construction of metal ion detection. Besides, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of Hg 2+ could be carried out with P-M (w) at a very low concentration (1 μg/mL) meaning that the acquired P-M(w) synthesized by few grams of reactants may satisfy the detection of approximate fifty thousand samples.

Cobalt-based catalysts can promote sulfite oxidation to recover the valuable byproducts formed during wet magnesia desulfurization. However, Hg(II) in the desulfurization slurry degrades the quality of reclaimed products and poses considerable environmental risk. Here, a bifunctional sulfur-doped catalyst/adsorbent, Co-TUD-1/S, is prepared through one-pot synthesis, in which the sulfur site is designed for trapping aqueous Hg 2+ . The catalytic rate of Co-TUD-1/S for MgSO 3 is 0.083 mmol/L/S, which is 10.4 times of that under non-catalytic condition, the removal efficiency of Hg 2+ is higher than 90%. The isothermal models and kinetic models for the adsorption of Hg 2+ are well-fitted to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity of experimental data is 96 mg/g. The characterization results confirm that Co 3 O 4 is functioned as the active catalysis site, and the formation of S–Hg bonds plays a crucial role in Hg 2+ capture. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Co site is more likely to combine with sulfite rather than Hg 2+ , which reduces the interference of absorbed Hg 2+ on the catalytic activity of Co. Specialization and cooperation between the catalysis site of –Co and adsorption site of –S are realized. The results reveal that the use of Co-TUD-1/S is a feasible strategy for improving wet desulfurization efficiency.

A novel dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent sensor (CDs@Eu-MOFs) has been synthesized successfully by encapsulating water-soluble fluorescent CDs into the chambers of Eu-MOFs via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method , which can be used for the detection of Hg 2+ in environmental water samples. The synthesized CDs@Eu-MOFs inherited simultaneously the excellent luminescence performance of Eu 3+ and CDs and exhibited good structural and fluorescence stability in aqueous solution. The presence of Hg 2+ changed the fluorescence intensity of CDs, while the fluorescence intensity of Eu-MOFs hardly changed, which could be used as the recognition part and the reference part respectively to construct the ratiometric fluorescence sensor. The obtained Hg 2+ fluorescent probe showed a wide linear range (0–300 μM) and a low detection limit (0.12 nM). The developed method can be used as a multi-functional fluorescent sensor with high sensitivity and good selectivity for the determination of Hg 2+ in actual water samples.

This work report the first AIE-based fluorescence sensor that can simultaneously detect three kinds of IIB elements (Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ ) in aqueous media. The thiourea-bridging bis-tetraphenylethylene ( Bis-TPE ) was synthesized by the condensation reaction of formyltetraphenylethylene and bis-thiosemicarbazide derivative in 82 % yield. Due to the AIE effect in the aqueous medium, the long-wavelength fluorescence was observed at 500–526 nm. It displayed high selective Zn 2+ -sensing ability with red-to-green fluorescence change, selective Cd 2+ -sensing ability with red-to-yellow fluorescence change and selective Hg 2+ -sensing ability with fluorescence enhancement, respectively. Moreover, it could detect simultaneously Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ in the mixed solution of these three kinds of cations by the fluorescence change with the assistance of Cl − and ATP. The sensing mechanism was confirmed as 1:1 stoichiometric ratio between host and guest. The detection limits were as low as 8.22×10 -8 M, 2.36×10 -7 M and 3.43×10 -8 M for Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ , respectively. These sensing abilities were applied as test strips for detecting Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ , and were used for living cell imaging, implying a high efficient and simple method for analyzing trace IIB elements (Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ ) simultaneously in complex environments and living bodies.

Given the huge threat of Hg 2+ to human health, it is always significant to develop Hg 2+ monitoring tools. Utilizing its impacts on nanozyme catalysis is a promising strategy to realize Hg 2+ detection. However, nearly all the assays fabricated based on the principle should be performed in solution and in laboratory and require bulky signal reading instruments, hindering their wider applications. It is highly desired to develop portable, efficient, and practical Hg 2+ sensors. Herein, we proposed the in situ controllable growth of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on paper to fabricate a smartphone optical nanosensor for highly sensitive Hg 2+ detection based on enzyme-mimetic activity stimulation. The ultrasmall AgNPs were directly grown on paper wafers to obtain test strips, which further integrated a 3D-printed holder and an APP built-in smartphone to fabricate the sample-to-answer sensor. The AgNPs-based test strips exhibited a target-stimulated peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine, and the chromogenic information was captured and processed by the smartphone to rapidly report the level of Hg 2+ . With the portable nanosensor, highly sensitive and specific detection of Hg 2+ was achieved, with a detection limit down to 0.44 nM. The sensor gathers the features of easy construction, simple operation, excellent capability, and robust performance together, promising great potential for rapid on-site analysis.

Distance-based microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) can be used to calculate the analyte content by reading the length of the discolored area in the channel. A blurred discoloration boundary is difficult to distinguish, resulting in reading errors. In this study, we constructed a μPAD modified with carboxyl-containing polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-μPAD) to improve the discoloration-boundary clarity. The filling of the pores of the fibers with the deposited polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) caused a decrease in the paper porosity, resulting in a flow delay. Meanwhile, the carboxyl groups carried by PS NPs were able to form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl-containing compounds FLPI, a Hg2+ probe, and the two factors acted synergistically to fix the FLPI to react in situ, raising the discoloration-boundary clarity. Compared with the unmodified μPAD, the detection of Hg2+ ions using the PS-μPAD still had a good linear relationship. Importantly, the color-depth difference inside and outside the discoloration boundary improved by about four times and showed excellent reproducibility in different populations. The method was simple and easy to expand, thereby providing an idea for more widespread application of distance-based μPADs.

Mercury (Hg 2+ ) is one of the most toxic heavy metals in farm products, so rapid detection of trace Hg 2+ has always been sought after with high interest. Herein, we report a biosensor to specifically recognize Hg 2+ in leaching solutions of brown rice flour. This sensor is simple and of low cost, with a very short assay time of 30 s. Another merit is the ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) at fM level. In addition, the specific aptamer probe realizes a good selectivity above 10 5 : 1 against the interferences. This sensor is developed based on an aptamer-modified gold electrode array (GEA) for capacitive sensing. Alternating current electrothermal (ACET) enrichment is induced during the AC capacitance acquirement. Thus, the enrichment and detection are coupled as a single step, and pre-concentration is needless. Owing to the sensing mechanism of solid–liquid interfacial capacitance and ACET enrichment, Hg 2+ level can be sensitively and rapidly reflected. Also, the sensor has a wide linear range from 1 fM to 0.1 nM and a shelf life of 15 days. This biosensor shows advantages on overall performance, enabling easy-to-operate, real-time, and large-scale Hg 2+ detection in farm products.

In this study, a rapid fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode detection strategy for Hg2+in seafoods was developed based on the cyclic binding of the organic fluorescent dye rhodamine 6G hydrazide (R6GH) to Hg2+. The luminescence properties of the fluorescent R6GH probe in different systems were investigated in detail. Based on the UV and fluorescence spectra, it was determined that the R6GH has good fluorescence intensity in acetonitrile and good selective recognition of Hg2+. Under optimal conditions, the R6GH fluorescent probe showed a good linear response to Hg2+(R2= 0.9888) in the range of 0–5 μM with a low detection limit of 2.5 × 10−2μM (S/N = 3). A paper-based sensing strategy based on fluorescence and colorimetric analysis was developed for the visualization and semiquantitative analysis of Hg2+in seafoods. The LAB values of the paper-based sensor impregnated with the R6GH probe solution showed good linearity (R2= 0.9875) with Hg2+concentration in the range of 0–50 μM, which means that the sensing paper can be combined with smart devices to provide reliable and efficient Hg2+detection.Keywords:Hg2+;R6GH;dual mode;fluorescence;visualization

Hg 2+ poses a great threat to human health and the environment due to its bioaccumulation and permanent damage. Herein, a reversible CHEF-based near-infrared fluorescent probe 2-(3-((E)-4-((E)-4-(diethylamino)-2- hydroxybenzylidene)amino)styryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)propanedinitrile ( DHEY ) capable of specifically recognizing Hg 2+ was constructed. DHEY exhibits advantages of large Stokes shift (157 nm), excellent selectivity , high sensitivity (LOD = 3.2 μg/L), and fast response efficiency (<3 min). Interestingly, DHEY can also realize rapid and effective detection of Hg 2+ after being recycled 7 times. The successful recovery of trace Hg 2+ in different environmental water samples fully demonstrates the potential of DHEY for actual applications. In particular, DHEY enables real-time observation of the distribution and translocation pattern of exogenous Hg 2+ in HeLa cells and zebrafish. This work provides important theoretical support for investigating the fate of heavy metal ions in the environment using fluorescence techniques.

The highly luminescent blue fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared via the one-step hydrothermal method using L-ascorbic acid (LAA) as a carbon source. The obtained carbon quantum dots (LAA-CQDs) demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Cu2+ and Hg2+ based on the efficient fluorescence quenching effect, with the lowest limits of 7.59 nM and 2.29 nM, respectively. Moreover, LAA-CQDs based paper sensors were fabricated, which showed a clear fluorescence response after being exposed to Cu2+ and Hg2+, with visual detection limits of 5 μM and 3 μM, respectively. The cyclic utilization of the paper sensors was realized by restoring their fluorescence after soaking them in saturated ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid solution. The sensors can be recycled to detect Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions for at least four turns, which was conducive to environmental protection and saving resources. The LAA-CQDs with good environmental applicability have been successfully applied for the detection of Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions in real environmental water samples. In addition, we verified the low toxicity and good biocompatibility of LAA-CQDs via cytotoxicity experiments and cell imaging.

A novel fluorescent probe was fabricated using fluorescein-based ionic liquids (ILs) to effectively achieve rapid and accurate detection of Hg 2+ and CH 3 Hg + in food. A probe developed by addition of modified fluorescein into the functionalised ILs presented a promising sensitivity toward Hg 2+ and CH 3 Hg + at concentrations of 0.4 and 60 nM, respectively. In addition, the novel probe could achieve visual and timely detection of Hg 2+ and CH 3 Hg + by the naked eyes at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 μM, respectively. The probe could also overcome the interference of potential ions and common organic ligands and detect Hg 2+ and CH 3 Hg + in real food samples, such as green tea and liquor. The probe could be converted into a paper-based sensor to visually detect Hg 2+ and CH 3 Hg + at levels as low as 10 nM.

An acrylic monomer bearing xanthene group, N-oxethyl acrylate-N′-rhodamine B hydrazide (ARBHE) was synthesized from N-hydroxyl ethyl-N′-rhodamine hydrazide (RBHE) and acryloyl chloride (Ac) in the presence of triethylamine in dry dichloromethane (CH 2 Cl 2 ) at room temperature. The synthesized ARBHE was identified by FTIR, 1 H NMR spectra and elementary analysis. Copolymer poly(AM-ARBHE) of ARBHE and AM was synthesized with thermal initiator by free radical precipitation polymerization and it was characterized by the method of FTIR and 1 H NMR. Its molecular weights (M η ) was 7.03 × 10 3 g mol −1 and the content of rhodamine units in the polymer chains was 1.44 % in mole fraction. The ability of the poly(AM-ARBHE) to detect different metal cations (Ag + , Ba 2+ , Cd 2+ Co 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Co 2+ K + , La 3+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ and Zn 2+ ) in water was investigated. Upon addition of Cr 3+ , Fe 3+ or Hg 2+ ions to the aqueous solution, visual color change and fluorescence enhancement were observed. Moreover, other metal ions did not induce obvious changes to the fluorescence spectra except to Fe 2+ . The detection limit of poly(AM-ARBHE) was less than 1 × 10 −11 M. The results suggest that this copolymer may offer potential as a polymeric sensor for Cr 3+ , Fe 3+ and Hg 2+ ions in water.
