Silk nanofibrils-MOF composite membranes for pollutant removal from water

Xiaowen Zhao,Chunhui Wu,Dejun Dai,Jing Ren,Tao Li,Shengjie Ling

Membrane separation technology is considered an effective strategy to remove pollutants in sewage. However, it remains a significant challenge to fabricate inexpensive membranes with high purification efficiency. Therefore, the present study proposes the integration of silk nanofibrils (SNFs) and polydopamine⊂metal-organic framework (PDA⊂MOF) nanoparticles to prepare self-supporting membranes, which can effectively intercept nanoparticle pollutants through the size exclusion effect and can strongly adsorb organic dyes and metal ions by SNF. In addition, PDA⊂MOF enables these membranes to adsorb small molecules and heavy metal ions during the filtration process, thereby effectively removing various pollutants from sewage. The integration of size-exclusion and adsorption capabilities enables the SNF/PDA⊂MOF membrane to remove nanoparticles, small-molecule dyes, heavy metal ions, and radioactive elements. This work provides a rational approach for the design and development of the next generation of water treatment membranes and is expected to be used in environmental, food-related, and biomedical fields.

Optimization of polymer incorporation in MOF via solvent exchange activation

Jianhang Hai,Shuli Wei,Jie Zou,Lele Wang,Yunqing Lu,Jin Wang

In this work, we activate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by applying the general vacuum heating (VH) method or the solvent exchange (SE) method, and encapsulate PSt into the MOF channels by the in-situ polymerization. For the SE method, methanol is optimal to exchange the DMF molecules inside MOF. The effectiveness of these two activation methods is compared. The results show that the MOF activated via the SE method has a higher specific surface area and a larger pore volume than the MOF activated via the general VH method. Also, the SE method is more efficient for the removal of DMF from the MOF channels, and leaves more open metal sites. Specifically, the amounts of loaded monomers inside the MOF activated via the SE method and the general VH method are 4.58 and 2.67 mmol/cm 3 . Furthermore, the MOF activated via the SE method has better retention of the channel structure and more free volume in the channels. This can increase the mobility of the monomers. As a consequence, the conversion rate of 47.57% from St to PSt is achieved in the MOF activated via the SE method, which is 50.21% higher than that obtained via the general VH method.

Plasma-Driven Fe/Cu-MOF Catalyzed CO2 Decomposition to CO

Xin Long,Shijie Zhou,Dong Liang,Mingdong Zhou,Liwei Sun,Yuehui Li

Room-temperature plasma-assisted catalysis represents an important pathway for CO 2 valorization. Rational design of catalysts tailored to plasma environment holds significant potential for improving catalytic efficiency. Unprecedentedly, we report a coordination-engineering strategy to fabricate the Fe/Cu mix-metal organic framework (Fe/Cu-MOF) catalysts for plasma-driven CO 2 dissociation into CO. Precise modulation during synthesis revealed an optimal Fe:Cu ratio of 0.44:0.56 to generating synergistic active sites favorable for CO production. The in situ-formed FeCu-based catalyst exhibited exceptionally high CO space-time yield of 32.3 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 under room-temperature plasma conditions. The coordination-tailored electronic structure enables the dynamic variations in the oxidation states of Fe/Cu upon plasma activation, thus facilitating sustained CO 2 activation. This work establishes atomic-level control of bimetallic sites as a powerful paradigm for plasma-catalytic systems. Graphical For the first time, Fe-Cu bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized via a one‑pot solvothermal method were used for efficient decomposition of CO 2 into CO with excellent stability under nonthermal plasma (NTP). This integrated approach offers fundamental insights and technical support for the development of robust catalysts under plasma conditions.

Scalable quasi-pure MOF membranes for energy-efficient gas separations

Song Shizheng,Fan Dong,Jia Xilin,Zhou Zhe,Diaz-Marquez Alejandro,Liu Zhihao,Huang Lingzhi,Liu Shuo,Wen He,Wang Yanjie,Yao Dahua,Maurin Guillaume,Han Yu,Wang Haihui,Eddaoudi Mohamed,Zhou Sheng

Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes offer great potential to address the energy penalties of energy-intensive gas separations 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 . Deriving convenient scalable protocols is essential for the successful translation and deployment of MOF-based membranes into practical applications 6 , 7 , 8 . Here we report a new membrane architecture, the quasi-pure MOF membrane (>90 vol% MOF), manufacturable at scale using industry-reliable solution-processing techniques and offering separation performance approaching that of associated pure MOF membranes, fully realizing the MOF intrinsic potential. This advance is enabled by a merged-phase approach fusing MOFs and polymers into a single pseudo-continuous phase and proffering MOFs with polymer-like surface properties, allowing rheologically controlled flocculated networks even at extreme solid concentrations. Representative benchmark MOFs (ZIF-67, CALF-20 and CuBDC) were fabricated into quasi-pure membranes and evaluated for essential separations, including propylene/propane, ethylene/ethane, carbon capture and hydrogen purification. Demonstrating industrial relevance, continuous roll-to-roll fabrication of quasi-pure (110)-oriented ZIF-67 membranes was achieved at an industrial plant. For propylene/propane separation, these membranes achieve a propylene permeability of about 160 barrer and mixed-gas selectivity of about 100—sufficient to produce polymer-grade propylene, offering an 80% purification cost reduction compared with distillation based on techno-economic analysis. This study addresses the long-standing gap between performance and scalability of crystalline membranes for demanding molecular separations.

Scalable mechanochemical synthesis of hierarchically porous high-entropy MOF-74

Zhudi He,Yumeng Guo,Wenrui Jin,Haiying Lu,Wei Zhang,Yan Wang

High-entropy Metal-Organic Frameworks (HE-MOFs) have garnered considerable attention in the fields of gas adsorption and catalysis owing to their prominent multimetal synergistic effects. However, their large-scale fabrication remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a hierarchically porous HE-MOF-74 material incorporating Al, Mg, Zn, Ni, and Co was successfully synthesized via a combined strategy of mechanochemical ball milling and solvothermal treatment. This approach features a solvent-free process and exhibits great potential for industrial scale-up. Structural characterizations confirm that the as-synthesized material possesses a typical MOF-74 crystal structure, homogeneous distribution of the five metal elements, and distinct hierarchical porosity, with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area of 565 m 2 ·g −1 . Gas adsorption measurements reveal that the material achieves a CO 2 uptake of 52.4 cm 3 ·g −1 at 298.15 K and an excellent CO 2 /N 2 selectivity with a maximum value of 107.35. Such superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of multiple metal components and the enhanced contribution of exposed open metal sites. This work provides a novel and feasible strategy for the controllable synthesis and scalable production of hierarchically porous HE-MOFs.

Semiconducting Mesoporous MOF/Metal Oxide Heterostructures for Enhanced Gas Sensing

Han Zejun,Ren Yuan,Zhang Tuo,Zhang Xuyan,Zhang Rui,Chen Yujia,Zou Yi,Shi Qiongfeng,Tao Li

Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential in molecular sensing devices due to their precise microporous structure and high specific surface area. However, their performance is hindered due to poor conductivity and low mass transfer efficiency within micropores. In this study, semiconducting mesoporous MOF/metal oxide (mMOF/MO) heterostructures (e.g., mZIF−8/ZnO, mUiO‒66/CeO 2 ) were prepared by precise in situ surface oxidation. The semiconducting mMOFs/MOs possess enhanced conductivity contributed by metal oxides, high mass transfer efficiency enhanced by the mesoporous structure, and high specific surface area brought by the microporous structure. The mZIF−8/ZnO exhibited high sensitivity to low-concentration NO 2 ( S = 1385% @ 10 ppm) at a low working temperature (145 ° C), with high selectivity ( S NO2 /S gas >4), fast response speed (40 s), and low limit of detection (LOD) (67 ppb). Similarly, the semiconducting mUiO‒66/CeO 2 heterostructure showed enhanced sensing performance toward NH 3 , demonstrating the universality of this strategy for constructing mMOF/MO heterostructure semiconductor materials. This work paves a way for endowing MOFs with conductivity and mesopores for various applications including electronic devices and heterogeneous catalysis.

Biomimetic KcsA channels enabled by 1D MOF-in-2D COF

Sun Qian,Dou Pengjia,Du Jingcheng,Yao Ayan,Cao Dong,Ma Ji,Hassan Shabi Ul,Guan Jian,Liu Jiangtao

Highly permeable and selective biomimetic membranes that can feel and recognize valuable ion species have attracted enthusiastic interest due to their analogous behavior with biological ion channels and potential applications in rigorous ion sieving. However, designing and developing single-species selective membranes that can isolate monovalent cations such as K + /Na + remains a tremendous challenge due to the sub-nanometer ion size, as well as the angstrom-sized difference. Considering the non-homogeneous heterostructure of KcsA channels and -COOH groups generally showing lower K + affinity, we propose the 1D MOF (rich in -COOH groups)-in-2D COF concept, aiming to enhance K + /Na + separation through strategic construction of heterogeneous ion transport channels, therefore narrowing the pore size of pristine COF membrane, and weakening the K + -channel wall interactions. Concretely, by interlocking and in situ immobilized growth, the pristine COF membrane is capable of capturing MOF ligands and metal ions in sequence to form 1D MOF-in-2D COF hetero-structured composite membranes. Benefiting from the molecular-level interlinked hybridization of covalent and metal organic hetero-frameworks induced by the coordination interaction between the -NH groups in COFs and the Cu centers from MOFs, the composite membrane enables rapid diffusion of K + in confined heterogeneous channels, thus leading to unprecedented cation sieving performance with K + /Na + selectivity approaching 10 2 and K + /Mg 2+ selectivity exceeding 10 3 . This membrane design concept exploits a viable avenue for developing single-species selective biomimetic membranes to achieve ultrahigh separation performance.

Yuting Luo,Yiwei Sun,Haoxiang Wang,yuyang He,Ruoyu Wang,Mengqi Lu,Yingong Wang,Xinlong Yan,Dongpo Xu

An efficient Ce-MOF@Aptamer electrochemical aptamer sensing technology was established for the sensitive detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) in milk samples.Cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) was synthesized by using terephthalic acid as organic ligand and cerium nitrate as metal center. Subsequently, it was functionalized by EDC-NHS and covalently attached to the electrode, and then the functionalized aptamer was loaded to form a sensing platform. The octahedral Ce-MOF has a large surface area and can provide more binding sites for aptamers. The minimum detection limit of the sensor is 0.7 nM. In addition, the sensor can effectively detect CAP in milk samples with excellent selectivity, repeatability and stability.

Bamboo-templated bimetallic MOF-derived thick carbon electrodes for supercapacitors

Zeng Shiyi,Duan Gaigai,Jin Haotian,He Shuijian,Zhang Chunmei,Han Xiaoshuai,Huang Yong,Han Jingquan,Jiang Shaohua

Metal–organic framework-derived porous carbons show promising potential as high-loading electrode materials for supercapacitors, while achieving efficient ion transport and conductivity remains a key challenge. In this work, a binder-free ZnCo bimetallic MOF-derived bamboo carbon (ZnCoBC) was fabricated through a one-step growth and carbonization strategy. The optimized ZnCoBC1000-5 exhibits a high specific surface area of 1385.49 m 2 g − 1 and a mesoporous volume of 0.51 cm 3 g − 1 , confirming a well-developed hierarchical pore network. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that ZnCoBC1000-5 maintains stable CV and GCD profiles within 5–30 mA cm − 2 , reflecting efficient charge transport and reversibility. The assembled symmetric device delivers a volumetric energy density of 6.46 mWh cm − 3 , while retaining 97.1% capacitance after 10,000 cycles, indicating excellent durability. This work highlights the structural advantages of bimetallic MOF-derived carbon bamboo and provides meaningful insight for designing high-performance energy-storage electrodes.

Electrochemical performance of metal-organic framework MOF(Ni) doped graphene

Xuelin Dao,Ming Nie,Hai Sun,Wei Dong,Zhenhong Xue,Qing Li,Jianming Liao,Xiaoxue Wang,Xuan Zhao,Daxiang Yang,Liumei Teng

In the paper, MOF(Ni) and MOF(Ni) complex with graphene MOF(Ni)-GR(w%) are synthesized by solvothermal method . The structure, morphology and elemental composition of samples are analyzed by physical characterization such as SEM , XRD , EDS and XPS . The results show that MOF(Ni) and MOF(Ni)-GR(w%) with high crystallinity and less impurities are successfully synthesized. Different samples are loaded on the electrodes and their electrochemical performances are tested by electrochemical workstation. The results show that doping appropriate graphene in MOF(Ni) can effectively improve the electrochemical catalytic activity of the composites. When the content of graphene is 4%, MOF(Ni)-GR(4%) is of the highest electrochemical catalytic activity, its overpotential is 268 mV, the Tafel slope is 108 mV·dec −1 , and it has better electrochemical stability compared with that of Pt/C electrode. The ECSA and EIS of MOF(Ni)-GR(4%) are superior to that of MOF(Ni) in exploring the reasons for enhancing catalytic hydrogen evolution . The reason is that the addition of graphene enhances the conductivity of the composites and reduces the resistance of catalyst transportation. Moreover, the doping of graphene improves the specific surface area of the composites, and provides enough active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

MOF-Derived Porous Carbon-Supported Bimetallic Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Catalysts

Aimei Wang,Mingsheng Luo,Baozhong Lü,Yongji Song,Zhi Yang,Min Li,Buchang Shi,Iltaf Khan

Generally, incorporating different metals in a catalyst can provide a synergistic effect for enhancing the catalytic performance. However, the interaction between the two metals and the effect on the catalytic performance seem elusive. In this work, a bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) is synthesized, and then, a novel bimetallic catalyst is prepared for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The combination of these different metals and a MOF-derived porous carbon supporter offers a unique active surface structure that may lead to improved catalytic performance. Herein, alloy-type structures were observed in FeCo and FeNi bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts, while a solid solution with a spinel structure were observed in FeMn and FeZn bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts. The bimetallic catalysts supported on MOF-derived porous carbon display stable and excellent catalytic performance during 100 h compared with a single-metal Fe catalyst. X-ray diffraction measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and H2 temperature-programed reduction were employed to study the synergistic effect of bimetallic components on surface composition and electronic and reduction properties accordingly. The relationship between catalytic performance and catalyst composition was deeply studied. These research work results will provide a new approach to design novel bimetallic FT catalysts.

Charge-switchable MOF nanocomplex for enhanced biofilm penetration and eradication

Meng Ding,Wei Zhao,Xu Zhang,Lingjie Song,Shifang Luan

Bacterial biofilm is notorious for causing chronic infections, whose antibiotic treatment is bringing about severe multidrug resistance and environmental contamination. Stimuli-responsive nanocarriers have become encouraging materials to combat biofilm infections with high efficiency and low side effect. Herein, a charge-switchable and pH-responsive nanocomplex is fabricated via a facile aqueous one-pot zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) encapsulation of proteinase K (PK) and photosensitizer Rose Bengal (RB), for enzymatic and photodynamic therapies (PDT) against biofilm infections. Once encountering in acidic microenvironment, the surface charge of nanocomplex can switch self-adaptively from negative to positive, hence remarkably facilitating the biofilm penetration of nanocomplex. After acid-induced decomposition of nanocomplex, the released PK degrades biofilm matrix and loosens its structure, promoting diffusion of RB inside the biofilm. Afterwards, upon visible light illumination, the RB generates highly reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can readily and efficiently kill the remained bacteria even in the biofilm core. The charge-assisted penetration makes PK and RB fully functional, resulting in a cooperative effect concerning high biofilm eradication capacity, as testified by biofilm models both in vitro and in vivo . The green synthesis and good therapeutic performance of the nanocomplex manifests its considerable potential as a nontoxic and effective platform for biofilm treatment.
