The self-regulated infrared emissivity properties of BCG/MgCl2/PEG-g-CDA powders for tunable IR signals

Honghan Bu,Guoyue Xu,Chuyang Liu,Tengchao Guo,Shujuan Tan

The green BCG/MgCl 2 /PEG-g-CDA powders were synthesized at different temperatures via liquid-phase reaction method. The microstructures of the synthesized powders were analyzed and characterized by FT-IR, XRD and ChemDraw software. The effects of synthesized temperatures on infrared emissivity properties of the powders in the wavelength range 3–5 μm were investigated systematically. It is found that the powders heated at 100 °C exhibit the optimum crystallinity at room temperature and thus show the largest variation (0.4) in infrared emissivity with the test temperature varying from 50 °C to 65 °C. Furthermore, the mechanisms for the self-regulated infrared emissivity properties are also explored thoroughly. The variation of infrared emissivity with temperature is ascribed to the changes in resistivity, which is induced by the transformation of PEG-g-CDA between crystalline and amorphous as well as the molecular structure transition of BCG between quinone and lactone. Our results suggest that BCG/MgCl 2 /PEG-g-CDA powders are potential candidates for intelligent infrared camouflage.

Effect of particle modification on the shear thickening behaviors of the suspensions of silica nanoparticles in PEG

Yu Miao,Qiao Xiuying,Dong Xingjian,Sun Kang

A series of shear thickening fluids based on the modified silica nanoparticles by silane coupling agent, stearic acid, and titanate suspended in polyethylene glycol (PEG) were prepared, and the effects of particle modification on the shear thickening behaviors of these fluids were investigated. It can be found that the modification obviously decreases the particle agglomeration, improves the particle dispersion property, and increases the maximum particle concentration in fluid but leads to the reduction of the viscosity and shear thickening effect of the fluids due to the decrease of particle interactions. The modified silica fluids exhibit stronger structural recovery ability and shear thickening reversibility even after multiple shear breakage.

Ammonium sulfate and PEG composite surfactant to promote dispersibility of precursors and Y2O3 powders for transparent ceramics

Zhigang Jiang,Le Zhang,Fangzheng Zhen,Qing Yao,Wei Bu,Tianyuan Zhou,Yuelong Ma,Rong Sun,Hao Chen,Yun Wang

Well-dispersed Y 2 O 3 powders were synthesized by a precipitation method from yttrium nitrate solution using (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and PEG4000 as the composite surfactant , and the dispersion mechanism of the composite surfactant was investigated in detail. Furthermore, the grain size, densification, mechanical and optical quality of as-prepared ceramics were also discussed. The dispersion state of both precursors and Y 2 O 3 powders could be remarkably effected by the mass ratio of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and PEG4000 during the liquid phase reaction process. When the function of electrostatic repulsion and the steric hindrance were combined properly, the aggregation state of powders could be effectively inhibited. With the addition of the mass ratio of 3:2 ((NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 to PEG4000), fine powders (130 nm) with high dispersion state were obtained. Meanwhile the Y 2 O 3 ceramics with an average grain size of 3.65 µm were fabricated by sintering at 1750 °C for 8 h.

Linear-like polypeptide-based micelle with pH-sensitive detachable PEG to deliver dimeric camptothecin for cancer therapy

Ka Hong Wong,Zhaopei Guo,Di Jiang,Xingzhi Zhou,Lizhu Lin,Denggao Zhao,Meiwan Chen

Nano drug delivery systems have made significant progress in delivering anticancer drugs camptothecin (CPT). However, many challenges for CPT delivery remain, including low drug loading efficiency, premature drug leakage, and poor cellular internalization. Herein, we report a novel dual-sensitive polypeptide-based micelle with remarkably high drug loading of CPT for cancer therapy. This self-assembled micelle possesses the following essential components for CPT: (1) pH-sensitive PEG (OHC-PEG-CHO) for prolonging blood circulation and allowing biocompatibility by shielding the cationic micelles, which can be detached under the tumor acidic microenvironment and facilitates the cellular uptake; (2) polypeptide polylysine-polyphenylalanine (PKF) synthesized via ring-opening polymerization for micelle formation and CPT analogue loading; (3) dimeric CPT (DCPT) with redox-sensitive linker for increasing CPT loading and ensuring drug release at tumor sites. Interestingly, the linear-like morphology of PEG-PKF/DCPT micelles was able to enhance their cellular internalization when compared with the spherical blank PKF micelles. Also, the anticancer efficacy of DCPT against lung cancer cells was significantly improved by the micelle formation. In conclusion, this work provides a promising strategy facilitating the safety and effective application of CPT in cancer therapy.

Tetra-armed PEG-based rapid high-adhesion, antibacterial and biodegradable pre-clinical bioadhesives for preventing pancreas leakage

Zhenyu Yang,Xueqiao Yu,Pengfei Wei,Yiqian Huang,Shuai Zhou,Wei Jing,Yan Zhang,Liya Sun,Guoqiang Bao,Xianli He,Bo Zhao

Pancreatic leakage is severe and life-threatening when happening pancreatitis or conducting pancreatectomy on patients, which easily induces bleeding, infection and even death. Commercial tissue adhesives cannot meet the demands for pancreatic leakage sealing due to the weak adhesiveness, potential toxicity and inability to degrade. Few reports have been feasibly paid attention to pancreas sealants due to the complicated conditions such as enzymatic microenvironments, mechanical dynamics and pre-infections. Herein, we prepared a rapid high-adhesion, antibacterial, biodegradable and injectable bioadhesive based on the FDA-approved polyethylene glycol to seal the pancreatic leakage for clinical translations and commercial applications. The tetra-armed poly(ethylene glycol) succinimidyl glutarate (PEG-SG), tetra-armed poly(ethylene glycol) amine (PEG-NH 2 ) and tannic acid (TA) were integrated to rapidly form the adhesive hydrogel (gelling time < 5 seconds) for convenient operations, while this bioadhesive achieved tough tissue adhesion (∼ 30 kPa), robust antibacterial activity (∼ 95% efficiency) and biocompatibility, revealing the excellent performances for pancreatic wound closure. In the established pre-clinical pancreatectomy using Bama miniature pig model, the bioadhesive presented efficient outcomes on pancreatic leakage, and this indicated the promising feasibility of the bioadhesive for clinical trials and translations.

The properties of cholesterol-modified pullulan nanoparticles with different PEG coatings and their anti-hepatoblastoma cell effects

Xin Tian,Xiangling He,Anqi Yao,Yalan You,Fan Yang,Keke Chen,Chengguang Zhu,Minhui Zeng,Qin Shi,Wenfang Tang,Xuelong Fan,Xiaojun Tao

Hydrophobically modified amino-pullulan polymers (CHPNH2) were modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) through the connective arms of succinic anhydride (SA) and cis aconite anhydride (CA) to form three polymers, namely, PCCN1, PCCN2 and PSCN, respectively. The structure of the polymer was identified by 1H NMR, and the degree of substitution (DS) values of hydrophobic groups were calculated. Three types of nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by the dialysis method, and the average particle sizes by dynamic light scattering (DLS) were 166.9 nm, 118.9 nm and 118.7 nm. The drug release experiment showed that the three drug-loaded nanoparticles all had a slow-release effect. The results of the MTT experiment showed that the cell survival rates of free cisplatin and the three types of drug-loaded nanoparticles were 42.30%, 40.17%, 37.53% and 53.34% after 48 h at the maximum drug concentration, indicating that PCCN1 nanoparticles have the strongest cytotoxicity. They also had the highest cell uptake rate in cell uptake experiments      .

PEG Modificated Bubble-Like Carbon Spherical-W18O49 Using for In Vitro Chemotherapy-Photothermal Synergistic Reverse Cancer Cells

Pengfei Yang,Zhihuan Zhao,Shasha Yang,Jianying Lin,Jimin Fan,Bing Zhang

In this study, a chemotherapy-photothermal synergistic anti-tumor system is constructed. Both W 18 O 49 @R-C and PEG-W 18 O 49 @R-C synthesized by hydrothermal method show the potential of photothermal therapy (PTT). The structure of reflux-carbon is bubble-like spherical and W 18 O 49 @R-C obtained by hydrothermal synthesis will cause bubble collapse due to the formation of crystal W 18 O 49 ; thus, the particle size decreases sharply. Furthermore, the photothermal stability of PEG-W 18 O 49 @R-C is higher than that of W 18 O 49 @R-C, and ζ-potential measurement indicates that PEG-W 18 O 49 @R-C has excellent dispersion characteristics. The test of drug loading and drug release performance show that PEG-modified W 18 O 49 @R-C has superior performance on drug loading amount and release capacity. In the synergistic anti-tumor process, the cancer cell viability after co-incubating with PEG-W 18 O 49 @R-C+DOX . HCl (with 808nm) is only 16.6%. These results indicate that PEG-W 18 O 49 @R-C has potential in the treatment of cancer by a combination of PTT and chemotherapy.

Polydopamine-PEG–Folic Acid Conjugate Film Engineered TiO2 Nanotube Arrays for Photoelectrochemical Sensing of Folate Binding Protein

Bobo Fan,Qi Fan,Lulin Hu,Min Cui,Xueying Wang,Hongmin Ma,Qin Wei

Serum-soluble folate binding protein (FBP) is an important tumor marker, and the development of a simple biosensing method is highly needed. In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for the detection of FBP was proposed based on the construction of an antifouling interface and the unique ligand–protein recognition. The PEC sensing platform was prepared by the biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) coating on TiO2 nanotubes arrays (NTAs). A significant PEC enhancement effect was obtained due to the macroporous structures. Excellent antifouling performance was achieved by conjugation of amino-group-terminated 8-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The incorporation of folic acid (FA) retains the antifouling property and shows recognition abilities toward FBP. The fabricated PEC biosensor shows good analytical performance. The combination of ligand–protein recognition and a PEC antifouling interface provides a good consideration for the development of FBP biosensors.

Coacervate Nanoreactors: PEG Side-Chain-Assisted Compartmentalization Leads to an Oxygen-Tolerant Polymerization-Induced Electrostatic Self-Assembly

Xiyu Wang,Qing Zheng,Xinhua Lu,Yuanli Cai

Biomimetic synthesis represents a cutting-edge topic in chemistry/materials science. Herein, we demonstrate poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) short side-chain-assisted monomer complex coacervation and reaction-induced polyion complex compartmentalization that lead to oxygen-tolerant polymerization-induced electrostatic self-assembly (PIESA). This is achieved by the one-pot synthesis of a PEGylated anionic polyelectrolyte and heterogeneous iterative polymerization of a cationic monomer under ecofriendly ambient, in-air aqueous photo-RAFT conditions. Simultaneous reversible all-segment-participating ternary complex coacervation and Coulombic interdomain interactions lead to coacervate nanoreactors that are capable of immediate initiation and fast reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer reactions. Approximately 2 nm monomer complex nanoclusters act as building blocks to drive liquid–liquid phase separation. Polymerization induces hierarchical self-assembly in a droplet nucleation–fusion–fission mechanism together with PEG-crowded polyion complex compartmentalization, using nanoclusters as building blocks, mechanistically similar to liquid–liquid phase separation through supramolecular polymerization. Consequently, protein-like, one-component multicompartment coacervate nanoreactors with oxygen-tolerant well-controlled fast reactions are achieved. This work provides important implications for the efficient precise synthesis of biomimetic coacervate nanodevices of increasing complexity.

Biodegradable pH-sensitive polyurethane micelles with different polyethylene glycol (PEG) locations for anti-cancer drug carrier applications

Yongchao Yao,Deqiu Xu,Chang Liu,Yayuan Guan,Jiya Zhang,Yuling Su,Lili Zhao,Fancui Meng,Jianbin Luo

Biodegradable multi-blocked polyurethane (PU) based micelles with a hydrophilic PEG corona were extensively studied for anti-cancer drug delivery systems. The hydrophilic PEG segment usually incorporated as a soft segment or as an end capping reagent, which has difficulty forming a dense PEG coating with a brush like conformation due to the low mobility of the PEG domains at the soft segment and the low amount of the PEG at the end of PU chains. In the present study, biodegradable pH sensitive polyurethane micelles with a dense brush like coating of PEG were prepared by a new kind of PEG grafted polyurethanes (PEG-g-PU) which were synthesized using PEGylated diethanolamine (MPEG-DEAM) as a chain extender. The high mobility of pendant MPEG in PEG-g-PU results in the formation of a dense and brush like PEG corona on the PEG-g-PU micelles. Meanwhile the MPEG attached on the hard segment will transfer the diethanolamine (DEAM) to the surface of nanoparticles during the self-assembly process and the DEAM render the particles with positive charges which potentially enhances cellular uptake and endosomal escape. DLS, TEM and AFM showed that a dense PEG domain was formed on the surface of PEG-g-PU micelles while no obvious PEG microdomain was observed for the other two kinds of micelles. FTIR and DSC results demonstrated the enhanced microphase separation of PEG-g-PU micelles compared with PEG-g-PU bulk materials and the other two contrast PU micelles, i.e. PEG-b-PU and PEG-c-PU. Paclitaxel (PTX) was chosen as a model hydrophobic drug to evaluate the loading and pH-triggered release of the PU micelles. The enhanced cytotoxicity of PTX-loaded PEG-g-PU-3 micelles against H460 cancer cells reveals that they are more potent for intracellular delivery of PTX as compared to PEG-b-PU-3 and PEG-c-PU-3 micelles.

Mechanical property of PEG hydrogel and the 3D red blood cell microstructures fabricated by two-photon polymerization

Xiaorong Gou,Meiling Zheng,Yuanyuan Zhao,Xianzi Dong,Feng Jin,Jinfeng Xing,Xuanming Duan

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) microfabrication is an advanced technology to fabricate precise three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel micro/nanostructure. 3D hydrogel microstructures fabricated by TPP with sophisticated details and appropriate stiffness are able to effectively simulate the microenvironment used in tissue engineering and drug delivery. The mechanical property of the microstructures, for instance, the Young’s modulus is crucial to achieve the microstructures with high fidelity. In this study, the mechanical property of the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) 3D microstructures fabricated with various laser powers, writing speeds and layer distances in the air was investigated by characterizing the Young’s modulus. Meanwhile, the Young’s modulus of the microstructure with different layer distances in water was determined as 3.50–6.52   MPa. Furthermore, 3D PEG microstructures simulating red blood cell morphology of different postures and sizes were successfully fabricated.

Nanoparticles based on chitosan hydrochloride/hyaluronic acid/PEG containing curcumin: In vitro evaluation and pharmacokinetics in rats

Yurui Xu,Sajid Asghar,Liu Yang,Zhipeng Chen,Hongying Li,Wenwen Shi,Yibo Li,Qinqing Shi,Qineng Ping,Yanyu Xiao

Nanoparticles based on chitosan hydrochloride (CSH)-hyaluronic acid (HA)-PEG were prepared for delivering curcumin (CUR) (CUR-PNPs) to brain tumor. CUR-PNPs of 245.9   nm and spherical morphology were obtained at optimized CSH/HA/PEG20000/CUR ratios with negative charge of about −27.2   mV and EE of approximately 93.3%. Cytotoxicity studies showed that CUR-PNPs improved drug’s anticancer activity in rat glioma cells (C6). The cellular uptake mechanism study showed active targeting of CUR-PNPs into C6 cells by HA mediated endocytosis . Clathrin-coated pit mediated endocytosis, clathrin-mediated endocytosis and macropincytosis were also identified as the entry pathways of PNPs into C6 cells. Pharmacokinetics of preparations in rats after i.v. administration further proved the superiority of CUR-PNPs (3.98 times greater than the area under the curve of CUR solution). In conclusion, CUR-PNPs might be a promising carrier for the therapy of brain tumors.
