Two-dimensional (2D) membranes exhibit exceptional properties in molecular separation and transport, which reveals their potential use in various applications. However, ion sieving with 2D membranes is severely restrained due to intercalation-induced swelling. Here, we describe how to efficiently stabilize the lamellar architecture using Keggin Al13 polycations as pillars in a Ti3C2Tx membrane. More importantly, interlayer spacing can be easily adjusted with angstrom precision over a wide range (2.7–11.2 Å) to achieve selective and tunable ion sieving. A membrane with narrow d-spacing demonstrated enhanced selectivity for monovalent ions. When applied in a forward osmosis desalination process, this membrane exhibited high NaCl exclusion (99%) with a fast water flux (0.30 L m–2 h–1 bar–1). A membrane with wide d-spacing showed notable selectivity, which was dependent on the cation valence. When it was applied to acid recovery from iron-based industrial wastewater, the membrane showed good H+/Fe2+ selectivity, which makes it a promising substitute for traditional polymeric membranes. Thus, we introduce a possible route to construct 2D membranes with appropriate structures to satisfy different ion-sieving requirements in diverse environment-, resource-, and energy-related applications.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with excellent metallic conductivity have proved promising in its application of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. A hierarchical hybrid film with ultrathin thickness composed of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers embedded with yarn-ball-shaped microspheres of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was designed to improve the absorption of electromagnetic waves (EMWs). The addition of yarn-ball-shaped microspheres is to shield more EMWs via multiple reflections in the inner space and reduce the undesirable emissions into the air. After thermal annealing treatment, the ultrathin film with intercalation of the carbonized yarn-ball-shaped CNF/MWCNT microspheres exhibited enhanced EMWs absorption as an important part of shielding effectiveness (45.1±0.9 dB) as well as excellent mechanical stability (≈0.9 million bending times). Thus, the well-designed structure of multilayered hybrid films with intercalated conductive microspheres can be a good candidate for higher absorption in EMI shielding effectiveness and outstanding mechanical properties.

Soft actuation materials are highly desirable in flexible electronics, soft robotics, etc. However, traditional bilayered actuators usually suffer from poor mechanical properties as well as deteriorated performance reliability. Here, inspired by the delicate architecture of natural bamboo, we present a hierarchical gradient structured soft actuator via mesoscale assembly of micro–nano-scaled two-dimentional MXenes and one-dimentional cellulose nanofibers with molecular-scaled strong hydrogen bonding. The resultant actuator integrates high tensile strength (237.1 MPa), high Young’s modulus (8.5 GPa), superior toughness (10.9 MJ/m3), and direct and fast hygroscopic actuation within a single body, which is difficult to achieve by traditional bilayered actuators. The proof-of-concept prototype robot is demonstrated to emphasize its high mechanical robustness even after bending 100 000 times, kneading, or being trampled by an adult (7 500 000 times heavier than a crawling robot). This bioinspired mesoscale assembly strategy provides an approach for soft materials to the application of next-generation robust robotics.

Although ammonia gas sensor research has been developed for a long time, room temperature flexible ammonia gas sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity are still hot research topics. 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have combined their versatile surface chemistry and high metal conductivity to show their enormous sensing potential. Herein, developing a room temperature nanocomposite based on 2D MXenes materials and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) with high gas response and flexibility targeting the construction of high-performance ammonia sensors is focused on. Thanks to the hydrogen bond composition, ohmic contact with the interdigitated electrodes, and excellent mechanical properties, the CPAM/Ti 3 C 2 T x -based ammonia sensors exhibit high ammonia selectivity, faster response–recovery rate (12.7/14.6 s), excellent flexibility, and long-term mechanical stability at room temperature. The synthesis of the CPAM/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites offers a lasting inspiration for developing high-performance flexible gas sensors.

Ultrathin, lightweight and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding films are urgently desired for the next generation electronic devices with complex-shaped surfaces. In this study, flexible EMI shielding composite films were fabricated by intercalating sliver nanowires (AgNWs) into Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets followed by a pressured-extrusion film-forming process. The resultant MXene/AgNW composite films with a low loading of nanocellulose (0.167 wt%) as a green binder exhibited remarkable conductivity (∼30 000 S m−1) and outstanding specific EMI shielding effectiveness (SSE/t, 16 724 dB). Thanks to the strengthening mechanism of the “brick-and-mortar” layered structure, the tensile stress of the MXene/AgNW composite film dramatically improved from 1.29 MPa (pure Ti3C2Tx film) to 63.80 MPa, and the electric conductivity and EMI SE can be maintained even after bending at 135° 10 000 times. The MXene/AgNW hybrid films with excellent EMI SE and mechanical robustness offered promising applications in the fields of aerospace, defense, smart electronics and flexible/wearable devices.

Being one of the most toxic pollutants commonly present in wastewater as soluble hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) specie, its concomitant adsorption and chemical reduction to relatively insoluble and less poisonous Cr(III) would be an effective strategy for remediation of Cr-polluted water. As such, a novel MXene-polyelectrolyte nanocomposite was typically synthesized for enhanced Cr(VI) removal. In detail, we applied polyethylenimine (PEI) to modify the Ti 3 C 2 T x surfaces and synthesized Ti 3 C 2 T x /PEI nanocomposites. The as-prepared composites were characterized by various methods such as SEM-EDX, N 2 sorption-desorption isotherm, XRD, FTIR, and XPS. Further, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /PEI was used to adsorb Cr(VI) for clarifying the kinetics, isotherms, and the effects of solution pH and coexisting ions on Cr(VI) removal by batch experiments. Our results show that coating of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets with PEI regulates surface charge of the as-synthesized adsorbent and creates it with a three-dimensional network, allowing the fast electrostatic adsorption of Cr(VI) anions to positively charged surface over wide pH range of 1–10 and promoting to achieve improved removal capacity maximum up to 186.5 mg/g. The Cr(VI) adsorption data were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. In addition, Ti 3 C 2 T x /PEI also exhibits excellent selectivity for Cr(VI) anions over competing ones such as NO 3 − , Cl − , ClO 4 − , and SO 4 2− . Time-dependent reaction routes of Ti 3 C 2 T x /PEI nanocomposite toward Cr(VI) was studied by XPS, which confirmed the slow reduction of all sorbed Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the dozens of hours and final in-situ Cr(III) immobilization, clarifying the sorption-reduction mechanism for Cr(VI) elimination. All these results suggest that Ti 3 C 2 T x /PEI nanocomposite prepared by reported surface-modification approach available for developing other functionalized adsorbents, may be a potential candidate for decontamination of Cr(VI)-polluted wastewater.

Flexible, stretchable, and wearable fabric strain sensors can easily detect human motions and monitor human health, but their utility is limited by poor stability and sensing performance. The stability and sensing performances of the fabric strain sensors are invariably determined by the fabric and conductive materials. Here, a Ti 3 C 2 T x /polypyrrole (PPy) nylon strain sensor is fabricated using a facile one-step polymerization of pyrrole (Py) monomers in the presence of Ti 3 C 2 T x suspension at 0 ° C. The Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets/PPy nanospheres heterostructure adhered to the nylon substrate inhibits mutual agglomeration and stacking, which provides more electron transfer pathways. The nylon substrate and two conductive materials endow the sensor with excellent stretchability (50%), low resistance (80 Ω cm −1 ), fast response (40 ms), and recovery (70 ms), a wide sensing range (0–50%), and long-term sensing function (2000 cycles). With these virtues, the prepared Ti 3 C 2 T x /PPy nylon sensor can monitor human activities effectively, including joint bending (finger, elbow, and knee) and subtle motions (carotid pulse, slight pressing, and speaking vibrations). The flexible and highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x /PPy strain sensor exhibits a promising sensing performance against the external strain, allowing it to be used in health-care monitoring.

In order to prevent the microwave leakage and mutual interference, more and more microwave absorbing devices are added into the design of electronic products to ensure its routine operation. In this work, we have successfully prepared MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x hierarchical composites by one-pot hydrothermal method and focused on the relationship between structures and electromagnetic absorbing properties. Supported by comprehensive characterizations, MoS 2 nanosheets were proved to be anchored on the surface and interlayer of Ti 3 C 2 T x through a hydrothermal process. Additionally, TiO 2 nanoparticles were obtained in situ . Due to these hierarchical structures, the MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites showed greatly enhanced microwave absorbing performance. The MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites exhibit a maximum reflection loss value of −33.5 dB at 10.24 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth covers 3.1 GHz (13.9–17 GHz) at the thickness of 1.0 mm, implying the features of wide frequency and light weight. This work in the hierarchical structure of MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites opens a promising door to the exploration of constructing extraordinary electromagnetic wave absorbents.

To diversify the motion modes of multifunctional soft robots capable of shape programming, we fabricate a biomimetic and programmable Ti3C2Tx MXene/low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bilayer actuator by spraying an aqueous dispersion of MXenes onto a plasma-activated LDPE film, followed by optimal thermal regulations. Because of the eminent light absorption and photothermal/electrothermal features of MXenes and the extremely mismatched thermal expansion coefficients between the two layers, the MXene/LDPE actuator can be sensitively driven by many stimuli of near-infrared light, electricity, and heat. The initial configuration of the bilayer actuator can be programmed by tuning the thermal regulation temperature, thereby assembling multiple actuation units to achieve biomimetic functions, such as artificial iris, mechanical arms, and flying birds. More importantly, in virtue of free shape cutting and programmable configuration, the MXene/LDPE bilayer actuator can perform untethered locomotion including crawling, rolling, and sailing. The soft robots can not only move on the ground in different forms but also sail on water along any designated routes and complete the surface cargo transportation driven by a near-infrared laser via the photothermal Marangoni effect. The shape-programmable methodology for the three amphibious motion modes lays foundations for wide applications of the MXene-based soft robots.

A 2D membrane-based separation technique has been increasingly applied to solve the problem of fresh water shortage via ion rejection. However, these 2D membranes often suffer from a notorious swelling problem when immersed in solution, resulting in poor rejection for the monovalent metal ion. The design of the antiswelling 2D lamellar membranes has been proved to be a big challenge for highly efficient desalination. Here a kind of self-crosslinked MXene membrane is proposed for ion rejection with an obviously suppressed swelling property, which takes advantage of the hydroxyl terminal groups on the MXene nanosheets by forming Ti–O–Ti bonds between the neighboring nanosheets via the self-crosslinking reaction (−OH + −OH = −O– + H2O) through a facile thermal treatment. The permeation rates of the monovalent metal ions through the self-crosslinked MXene membrane are about two orders of magnitude lower than those through the pristine MXene membrane, which indicates the obviously improved performance of the ion exclusion by self-crosslinking between the MXene lamellae. Moreover, the excellent stability of the self-crosslinked MXene membrane during the 70 h long-term ion separation also demonstrates its promising antiswelling property. Such a facile and efficient self-crosslinking strategy gives the MXene membrane a good antiswelling property for metal ion rejection, which is also suitable for many other 2D materials with tunable surface functional groups during membrane assembly.

Electromagnetic (EM) pollution affecting people’s normal lives and health has attracted considerable attention in the current society. In this work, a promising EM wave absorption and shielding material, MXene/Ni hybrid, composed of one-dimensional Ni nanochains and two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (MXene), is successfully designed and developed. As expected, excellent EM wave absorption and shielding properties are obtained and controlled by only adjusting the MXene content in the hybrid. A minimum reflection loss of −49.9 dB is obtained only with a thickness of 1.75 mm at 11.9 GHz when the MXene content is 10 wt %. Upon further increasing the MXene content to 50 wt %, the optimal EM shielding effectiveness (SE) reaches 66.4 dB with an absorption effectiveness (SEA) of 59.9 dB. Mechanism analysis reveals that the excellent EM wave absorption and shielding performances of the hybrid are contributed to the synergistic effect of conductive MXene and magnetic Ni chains, by which, the dielectric properties and electromagnetic loss can be easily controlled to obtain appropriate impedance matching conditions and good EM wave dissipation ability. This work provides a simple but effective route to develop MXene-based EM wave absorption and shielding materials. A universal guideline for designing the absorbing and shielding materials for the future is also proposed.

Incorporation of magnetic loss component is more favorable to high-performance microwave absorbing materials. In this paper, the NiFe 2 O 4 -decorated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composites were synthesized by the in-situ chemical co-precipitation method. The magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were attached on the surfaces or inserted into the interlayers of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Interestingly, we reduced effectively complex permittivity and enhanced magnetic loss by increasing the NiFe 2 O 4 content on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Stronger electromagnetic attenuation ability and preferable impedance matching property were achieved and considered to be responsible mainly for improving absorbing peaks as well as bandwidth of the NiFe 2 O 4 -Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite. In particular, the NiFe 2 O 4 -Ti 3 C 2 T x -20 sample exhibited an optimal effective absorption bandwidth ( RL < −10 dB) of 7.68 GHz with the material thickness of only 1.5 mm. These findings are believed to pave the way of further promoting microwave absorption performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene from magnetic functionalized decoration of view.
