A single-cell system of flow electrode capacitive mixing (F-CapMix) with a cross chamber for continuous energy production

Zhi Zou,Shuo Meng,Xiaolei Bian,Longcheng Liu

The generation of electricity from salinity difference energy between seawater and freshwater through a Capacitive Mixing (CapMix) system with solid electrodes was limited by intermittent energy production. In this study, a single-cell CapMix system using flow-electrode (F-CapMix) with a cross-chamber configuration was examined to produce electricity continuously from simulated seawater and freshwater. The effects of the flow-electrode electrolyte concentration, activated carbon loading, amounts of carbon black, and connected external resistance on the system performance were investigated. The results suggest that the system performance can be enhanced by increasing the activated carbon loading and carbon black amounts. Furthermore, to achieve the maximum power density of the system, the external resistance should be matched to the internal resistance. The maximum power density of the presented single-cell F-CapMix system was 74.3 mW m−2, which was comparable to those of previous CapMix and F-CapMix systems. In addition, this study also reveals that using only carbon black as the flow electrode is capable of producing electricity continuously for long-term operation. In summary, these results indicate the potential of F-CapMix and provide developing directions for further optimization.

High-performance epoxy nanocomposites via constructing a rigid-flexible interface with graphene oxide functionalized by polyetheramine and f-SiO2

Guodong Shi,Jian Song,Xiaoxiao Tian,Tongtong Liu,Zhanjun Wu

Graphene oxide (GO) is an ideal reinforcement for improving mechanical properties of epoxy (EP) and reducing its coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). However, the poor interfacial interaction between GO and polymer matrix seriously hinders the reinforcing effect of GO. To improve their interface, we first functionalized GO with flexible polyetheramine (PEA) and f-SiO 2 rigid nanoparticles, obtaining PEA-GO and SiO 2 -PEA-GO hybrids, respectively. Then the PEA-GO and SiO 2 -PEA-GO were incorporated into EP to obtain nanocomposites with flexible interphases and rigid-flexible interphases, respectively. The interfaces were tuned by two PEA molecules (D230 and D2000) with different chain lengths. The effects of the different interface structures on the mechanical properties and CTE of the GO/EP nanocomposites with a 0.25 wt% filler loading were investigated. It was found that the effects of SiO 2 -PEA-GO on strengthening and toughening EP matrix and on reducing its CTE were much better than those of PEA-GO, because the rigid-flexible interfaces provided higher bonding strength and better energy dissipation mechanisms than the flexible interfaces. Moreover, the D230-GO/EP nanocomposite containing shorter PEA (D230) molecules exhibited higher strength but lower toughness and CTE than the D2000-GO/EP nanocomposite. However, the SiO 2 -D2000-GO/EP nanocomposite showed greater strength, toughness and CTE than the SiO 2 -D230-GO/EP nanocomposite. This indicated that the longer PEA molecules in rigid-flexible interphases produced higher improvement in strength and toughness but smaller decreases in CTE. This work provides a promising strategy of constructing an adjustable flexible-rigid interfacial structure and opens an avenue for developing GO/EP nanocomposites with high mechanical properties and low CTE.

Large–size porous spherical 3D covalent organic framework for preconcentration of bisphenol F in water samples and orange juice

Qiong He,Ying Chen,Yuyang Liu,Qiang Wang,Chiyang He,Shaorong Liu

Large–size spherical sorbents with particle size of 10–50 μm are widely applied in separation fields, however it is still a great challenge to synthesize such large–size spherical covalent organic framework (COF). In this work, a type of large–size porous 3D COF was size–controablly synthesized via a two–step strategy, in which a large–size porous 3D spherical polymer was prepared first through a Pickering emulsion polymerization using nano silica as the stabilizer, and subsequently it was converted into porous spherical 3D COF by a solvothermal method . The as–prepared porous spherical COF (COF–320 as a model) showed size–controllable uniform spherical morphology within 15–45 μm, large specific surface area, fine crystalline structure, and good chemical stability. When used as the sorbent for dispersive solid–phase extraction (d–SPE) of bisphenol F (BPF), the porous spherical COF–320 (15 μm) displayed high adsorption capacity ( Q max  = 335.6 mg/g), high enrichment factor (80 folds), and good reusability (at least five cycles). By coupling the d–SPE method to HPLC, a new analytical approach was developed and successfully applied to the determination of trace BPF in two water samples, an orange juice and a standard sample with recoveries of 96.0–102.2 % (RSD = 1.1–1.5 %), 95.7–97.4 % (RSD = 1.4–4.4 %) and 98.7 % (RSD = 2.3 %), respectively. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) and limit of quantification (S/N = 10) were 0.1 and 0.3 ng/mL, respectively. The new synthesis strategy opens a viable way to prepare large–size porous spherical COFs, and the developed analytical method can be potentially applied to sensitively detect the trace BPF in water samples and beverages.

Study on toxicity/efficacy related substances and metabolic mechanism of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f based on O2LPS correlation analysis

Lili Song,Jiayi Wang,Jiaxuan Nie,Yue Zhang,Rui Han,Huimin Liu,Ningning Ma,Zhen Yang,Yubo Li

Ethnopharmacological relevance Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f (TwHF) has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and nephritis for hundreds of years. Aim of the study Although the efficacy of TwHF in the treatment of RA is definite, its serious side effects and toxicity have also received close attention from domestic and international researchers, so the clinical application of TwHF has been controversial. Most of the current TwHF toxicity studies have been conducted with animals in normal body states, but ignore the effects in pathological states. In this study, we aimed to find out the material basis and metabolic mechanism of the “toxicity/effectiveness” of TwHF on rat kidneys in different body states by using two-way orthogonal partial least squares (O2PLS) method. Materials and methods In the present study, TwHF was extracted by reflux extraction method using ethanol as the extraction solvent. Firstly, the effects of TwHF on rat kidneys in different body states were first evaluated by detecting creatinine and urea nitrogen levels and morphological changes in kidney pathology identified the components of TwHF in rats in different body states using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS technique. Serum and urine metabolomics were used to search for biomarkers and metabolic pathways by which TwHF exerts renal injury and protection, and finally, O2PLS correlation analysis was used to correlate the components with renal protective and injury biomarkers. Results TwHF was found to have a protective effect on the kidney of RA rats and an injurious effect on the kidney of normal rats at a dose of 11.25 g/kg/d. The UPLC-Q-TOF/MS technique was used to identify 34 components in TwHF extracts; 23 components and 57 metabolites were identified in the administered rats. O2PLS screened three substances as both toxic and pharmacodynamic components of TwHF, namely 3,5-dimethoxyphenyl-2-propenl-ol, kaurane-16,19,20-triol, and demethylzeylasteral + O, and found that these three components may exert nephrotoxic effects via the nicotinic acid and nicotinamide metabolic pathways and nephroprotective effects via the tryptophan metabolic pathway. Conclusion In this study, O2PLS analysis was used for the first time to combine biomarkers and components in vivo and found the material basis and metabolic mechanism of nephrotoxicity and efficacy of TwHF, which provided key clues for further study on the biological mechanism of toxicity and efficacy of TwHF.

Fabrication and reaction mechanism study of Co(OH)F@Al nanowire arrays: A functional fluorine-containing metastable intermolecular composite

Yuxiang Li,Kaili Zhang

Metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) comprising solid fuels and oxidizers at nano-scale exhibit high energy densities and fast reaction speeds. As most metal and metalloid fuels are passivated by the natural oxide layer on the surface which acts as a reaction barrier, fluorine-containing oxidizers are of particular interest to promote the reactivity through interfacial fluoridation. In this work, cobalt hydroxy fluoride (Co(OH)F) was introduced as a functional fluorine-containing oxidizer, and core-shell structured Co(OH)F@Al nanoarray was fabricated onto a glass substrate . The thermal behavior and reaction mechanism of pure Co(OH)F and Co(OH)F@Al composites were thoroughly investigated, and Co(OH)F@Al was compared with CoO@Al and Co 3 O 4 @Al with identical morphology. In the Co(OH)F@Al composite, a pre-ignition reaction was observed which was attributed to the etching of Al 2 O 3 shell by HF and the fluoridation of Al core by HF and CoF 2 . With the assistance of pre-ignition reaction, Co(OH)F@Al can complete main exothermal reaction before Al melting in a solid-state mechanism, and its peak temperature is around 200 ℃ lower than those of MICs employing CoO and Co 3 O 4 as oxidizers.

Termipaniculatones A-F, chalcone-flavonone heterodimers from Terminthia paniculata, and their protective effects on hyperuricemia and acute gouty arthritis

Tong-Hua Yang,De-Xiu Yan,Xiao-Yan Huang,Bo Hou,Yun-Bao Ma,Hua Peng,Xue-Mei Zhang,Ji-Jun Chen,Chang-An Geng

Terminthia paniculata (Sanyeqi) is widely used for treating inflammation and rheumatic arthritis in the folk areas of Yunnan province, China. Its total extract was first revealed with xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity in vitro and anti-hyperuricemic effect in vivo . Bioassay-guided separation on Fr. A5 yielded six chalcone-flavonone heterodimers , termipaniculatones A-F. Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses involving HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR , UV, IR and [ α ] D , and the absolute configuration of termipaniculatone F was verified by ECD calculation. Termipaniculatones A and E showed obvious XO inhibitory activity with IC 50 values of 55.6 and 89.5  μ M, respectively, which took effects via a mix-type mode. A molecular modeling study revealed that termipaniculatone A was well located into the active site of XO by interacting with Glu802, Arg880, Thr1010 and Val1011 residues. Termipaniculatone A showed anti-hyperuricemic effects by decreasing serum uric acid levels and inhibiting XO activity in both serum and liver on potassium oxonate (PO)-induced hyperuricemia mice, and anti-inflammatory activity through alleviating paw swelling on monosodium urate (MSU)-induced mice, at the concentration of 20 mg/kg. This is the first time to reveal the anti-hyperuricemic and anti-acute gouty arthritis potency of T. paniculata and the characteristic biflavonoids as active constituents, which provides valuable information for searching new XO inhibitors from natural sources.

Acute exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of Chinese PFOS alternative F-53B induces oxidative stress in early developing zebrafish

Yongming Wu,Jing Huang,Mi Deng,Yuanxiang Jin,Huilin Yang,Yu Liu,Qinyan Cao,Jan A. Mennigen,Wenqing Tu

6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B), a Chinese PFOS alternative, has recently been identified in the aquatic environment at concentrations similar to or higher than perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Although previous studies have shown that F-53B can trigger oxidative stress in fish, the underlying molecular mechanism is still largely unknown. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to various concentrations of F-53B (0, 0.5, 20 and 200 μg/L) for 5 d to investigate oxidative stress responses and possible molecular mechanisms of action. Our results showed that F-53B accumulated in a concentration-dependent manner in zebrafish larvae. The contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH), as well as the activities, mRNA and protein levels of most of antioxidant enzyme genes involved in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/Nrf2-ARE pathway were significantly reduced. Further in silico study indicated that F-53B binds tightly to PI3K, which may be related to the inhibition of Nrf2-regulated antioxidant functions by F-53B as a PI3K inhibitor. Combining in vivo and in silico studies, we elucidated the effects of F-53B on antioxidant system of zebrafish through the PI3K/Akt/Nrf2-ARE pathway, which increases our understanding of the molecular mechanism of F-53B on antioxidant responses in fish.

Combined pesticides in field doses weaken honey bee (Apis cerana F.) flight ability and analyses of transcriptomics and metabolomics

Changsheng Ma,Xiaoyu Shi,Sihao Chen,Jincai Han,Haodong Bai,Zuren Li,Hongmei Li-Byarlay,Lianyang Bai

Imidacloprid, chlorpyrifos, and glyphosate rank among the most extensively employed pesticides worldwide. The effects of these pesticides and their combined on the flight capability of Apis cerana , and the potential underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. To investigate these effects, we carried out flight mill, transcriptome, and metabolome experiments. Our findings reveal that individual acute oral treatments with pesticides, specifically 20 μL of 10 ng/g imidacloprid (0.2 ng per bee), 30 ng/g chlorpyrifos (0.6 ng per bee), and 60 ng/g glyphosate (1.2 ng per bee), did not impact the flight capability of the bees. However, when bees were exposed to a combination of two or three pesticides, a notable reduction in flight duration and distance was observed. In the transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, we identified 307 transcripts and 17 metabolites that exhibited differential expression following exposure to combined pesticides, primarily associated with metabolic pathways involved in energy regulation. Our results illuminate the intricate effects and potential hazards posed by combined pesticide exposures on bee behavior. These findings offer valuable insights into the synergistic potential of pesticide combinations and their capacity to impair bee behavior. Understanding these complex interactions is essential for comprehending the broader consequences of pesticide formulations on honey bee populations.

Boosting photocatalytic ozonation activity through F or I doping in g-C3N4: A trade-off between stability and performance

Weirui Chen,Weijie Chen,Yimin Luo,Yanqi Feng,Xukai Li,Jing Wang,Ping Li,Liying Bin,Bing Tang,Laisheng Li

g-C 3 N 4 (CN) based catalysts were effective for photocatalytic ozonation (PCO), but their stability during reaction remained a mystery. This study investigated the change on PCO activity and stability of CN induced by F or I doping. Compared with CN, F-CN had the greater VB potential while I-CN had a greater CB position, which both led to their better O 3 activation. F-CN and I-CN PCO showed the greater oxalic acid (OA) degradation than that of CN PCO process. Though the enhanced activity, both F-CN and I-CN demonstrated the lower stability compared with that of CN. Because of the existing of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like •OH, •O 2 - and h vb + , CN, F-CN and I-CN were partially oxidized, generating NO 3 - and organic molecules such as cyanuric acid. h vb + and •OH mainly accounted for the decomposition of three CN. Triazine ring oxidation resulted in internal tearing and edge fracture as well as the formation of O-containing groups on all CN-based catalysts. O contents in catalysts initially increased and then decreased with reaction time, indicating that surface O-containing groups were unstable. The structural destroy could be eased with the present of organic pollutants. This study deepened the understanding of fate of CN based catalysts during PCO application.

Electrochemical mineralization of perfluorooctane sulfonate by novel F and Sb co-doped Ti/SnO2 electrode containing Sn-Sb interlayer

Bo Yang,Jinbao Wang,Chaojin Jiang,Juying Li,Gang Yu,Shubo Deng,Shaoyou Lu,Peixin Zhang,Caizhen Zhu,Qiongfang Zhuo

The F and Sb co-doped Ti/SnO 2 electrode containing Sn-Sb interlayer was innovatively synthesized for electro-oxidation (EO) removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in water. Stronger oxidation capability and remarkably longer lifetime were performed for Ti/Sn-Sb/SnO 2 -F-Sb electrode than these similar electrodes in this study without Sn-Sb interlayer and F/Sb doping, which could removed more than 99% of PFOS ( C 0   =   100   mg   L −1 ) after 120-min electrolysis. The attribute of Ti/Sn-Sb/SnO 2 -F-Sb anode and its EO mechanism were surveyed by XRD, XPS, SEM, and LSV. F and Sb co-doping could improve the stability and EO capability of the electrode, which resulted from that the smooth surface was formed conveniently to produce physically adsorbed hydroxyl radical and lead to relatively high OEP. The operating parameters of EO process were also investigated including current density, pH value, and stirring speed, which revealed the effect of these parameters on PFOS decomposition. Additionally, the mineralization parameters, TOC and F − concentration, as well as short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids were analyzed in solution during the electrolysis. Consequently, the EO pathway of PFOS was proposed through the detection of intermediates. These results manifest that Ti/Sn-Sb/SnO 2 -F-Sb anode is prospective to effectively decompose PFOS in wastewater.

Effect of formaldehyde/phenol ratio (F/P) on the properties of phenolic resins and foams synthesized at room temperature

Xiang-Ming Hu,Yan-Yun Zhao,Wei-Min Cheng

Six types of phenolic foaming resins were synthesized at room temperature with different formaldehyde/phenol (F/P) ratios in this study. The effects of F/P ratios on physicochemical characteristics and foaming properties of the resulting resins were analyzed based on viscosity, solids content, hydroxymethyl index, residual monomer content, molecular structure of the foaming resin, flame retardancy, and foam compression strength measurements. The results of the present study indicated that viscosity and solids content of the foaming resins increased with an increase in F/P; the hydroxymethyl index of the resin first increased and then decreased with an increase in F/P, reaching its maximum at F/P = 1.6; the trimer, tetramer, and pentamer contents of the resins increased with an increase in F/P. Nuclear magnetic resonance ( 13 C NMR) spectral analysis indicated that the presence of para / para -methylene, para -hydroxymethyl, and ortho -hydroxymethyl groups in the resin gradually increased with an increase in F/P; the proportions of ortho/ortho - and ortho / para -methylene bonds of the resin increased as F/P was increased. The increase in F/P was demonstrated to be conducive to improving the compression strength, thermal stability, and flame retardancy of the phenolic foam and reducing its peak heat release rate and total smoke release. The morphology of phenolic foams show that the closed cell content in the PF foam increases with the F/P ratio until it reaches a ratio of 1.6. Furthermore, the cell size becomes more uniform. POLYM. Deoxynivalenol Induces Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Damage through RhoA/ROCK Pathway-Mediated Apoptosis and F-Actin-Associated Tight Junction Disruption

Chenjiao Miao,Zuoyao Wu,Yafei Sun,Zheng Cao

Deoxynivalenol (DON) poses a serious global food safety risk due to its high toxicity and contamination rate. It disrupts the intestinal epithelial barrier, allowing exogenous toxins to enter the circulation and resulting in sepsis and systemic toxicity. In this research, 32 male Kunming mice and Porcine Small Intestinal Epithelial (IPEC-J2) cells were treated with DON at 0–4.8 mg/kg (7 d) and 0–12 μM (24 h), respectively. Histopathological results revealed that DON disrupted the intestinal epithelial barrier, causing apoptosis and tight junction (TJ) injury. Immunofluorescence and protein expression results showed that DON-induced p53-dependent mitochondrial pathway apoptosis and fibrillar actin (F-actin)-associated TJ injury and that the RhoA/ROCK pathway were activated in mice jejunal tissue and IPEC-J2 cells. Pretreatment with RhoA or ROCK inhibitors (Rosin or Y-27632) maintained DON-induced apoptosis and F-actin-associated TJ injury in IPEC-J2 cells. Thus, DON induces damage to the intestinal epithelial barrier through the RhoA/ROCK pathway-mediated apoptosis and F-actin-associated TJ disruption.
