Due to high theoretical capacity (670 mA h g −1 ), MoS 2 can become a good application for energy storage. It is reported that the layer spacing of MoS 2 can be exfoliated, which improves Na + /K + insertion/extraction and promotes electron diffusion and ion transport. So, we obtained exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets with the modification of a carbon layer, in order to form exfoliated MoS 2 @C nanosheets. With the analysis of XRD and TEM, it was found that the larger interlayer spacing was obtained. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheet electrode showed a high capacity (641 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 ) and maintained a capacity of 214 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 400 cycles. Moreover, it was discussed as anode for potassium ion batteries (KIBs). It can be found that the electrode had 241 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 20 cycles.

It is a highly relevant topic concerning how to improve the electrochemical performance of anode materials for the next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, for the first time, we report a facile and controllable approach to modify MoS 2 nanosheets , a typical 2D material , as an anode material for advanced LIBs via oxygen plasma engineering. An oxygen plasma treatment not only generates vacancies/defects but also incorporates heteroatom doping to form Mo–O–C bonds. This unique hybrid specialty enables the oxygen-plasma-treated MoS 2 to achieve superior electrochemical performance with high reversible capacities, a long-term cycle life, and good rate capabilities. The plasma-assisted modification is believed to be applicable for other 2D materials as an efficient anode for energy storages.

Intrinsic linear polarized optics discovered in anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted intense interest for polarization-sensitive optical and optoelectronic applications , such as black phosphorous, ReSe 2 , etc. However, the lack of matured method to synthesize high-quality, large-scale and air-stable 2D materials with anisotropic properties, is still an obstacle for practical applications. Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), which exhibits strong direct-band-gap light-harvesting properties, can be grown maturely. But unfortunately, MoS 2 does not show linear dichroism owing to its in-plane isotropic crystalline symmetry. We, herein, for the first time, report on an artificial control of extrinsic linear polarized photoelectric effect in monolayer MoS 2 , by successfully controlling its anisotropic degree of in-plane crystal symmetry via artificially induced uniaxial tensile strain . Strong linear polarization-sensitive photodetection from visible to near-infrared range is realized for monolayer MoS 2 -based device, and the polarization anisotropic ratio can reach up over 2.0 under 4.5% strain. The observation is supported by combination of experiment-theory study on polarized Raman spectrum and optical absorption under gradually applied strains. Our results have demonstrated that the artificial-controlled symmetry reducing of MoS 2 is a promising strategy to achieve high performance polarization photodetection. This method can also be extended to other 2D materials, which potentially opens up a new field to endow isotropic 2D materials with anisotropic functionalities by artificial structure engineering.

High-rate recombination of photogenerated electron and hole pairs will lead to low photocatalytic activity. Constructing heterostructure is a way to address this problem and thus increase the photoelectrochemical performance of the photocatalysts. In this article, molybdenum sulfide (MoS2)/cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocomposites were fabricated by a facile solvothermal method after sonication. The CdS nanoparticles immobilized on the MoS2sheet retained the original crystal structure and morphology. The composites exhibit higher photoelectrochemical properties compared with pure MoS2nanosheets or CdS powder. When the precursor concentration of CdS is 0.015 M, the MoS2/CdS composites yield the highest photocurrent, which is enhanced nearly five times compared with pure CdS or MoS2. The improved photoelectrochemical performance can be ascribed to the increase of light harvest, as well as to the heterostructure that decreases the recombination rate of the photogenerated electron and hole pairs.Keywords:MoS2nanosheets;CdS nanoparticle;heterostructure;photocatalysis;photoelectrochemical properties

Composites based on conducting polymers and two-dimensional (2D) layer structure transition metal oxides are expected to realize the combination of good mechanical properties and excellent capacitance. Here poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/molybdenum disulfide (PEDOT/MoS2) intercalated composites were successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS). The thermal stability, conductivity and capacitance performance are improved significantly with increasing fraction of MoS2. When the content of MoS2 was 45% in weight, the maximum weight loss velocity temperature is 365 °C which is 52 °C higher than that of PEDOT; the specific capacitance was 405 F g−1, about 4 times that of a PEDOT electrode; also the capacity retention was around 90% after 1000 cycles. This study provides a facile preparation method of organic/inorganic nanocomposites with enhanced electrochemical capacitance performance.

Edge-oriented MoS2 nanopetals complexed with basal-oriented MoS2 thin films have been mildly grown through a simple atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) process with the reaction of MoO3 and S. Dense nanopetals with hexagonal structures exposed numerous chemically reactive edge sites. The roles of growth temperature, time and S/MoO3 mass ratio have been carefully investigated to tune the morphology and density of the as-grown products. Importantly, the carbon nanotube (CNT) films were used as substrates for growing MoS2 nanopetals. The MoS2/CNT composites, used directly as working electrodes, showed remarkable and stable electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as manifested with a low onset overpotential of ∼100 mV and a small Tafel slope of 49.5 mV per decade. The development of the MoS2/CNT electrode provides a promising way to fabricate other multifunctional electrodes.

Using polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes as the substrate, the layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets were wrapped on PPy nanotubes to form MoS 2 /PPy nanocomposites by a hydrothermal reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that MoS 2 nanosheets coated uniformly on the surface of PPy nanotubes owing to the electrostatic force. The specific capacitance of the MoS 2 /PPy nanocomposites was high up to 307.5 F g −1 , much higher than that of the pure PPy with specific capacitance of 106.3 F g −1 and MoS 2 with specific capacitance of 138.5 F g −1 at a current density of 1.0 A g −1 in 1 M KCl electrolyte. And the special structure of MoS 2 /PPy nanocomposites electrode reduces the deformation during the charge–discharge process and thus improves the rate stability and electrochemical cycling stability of the electrode significantly. The specific capacitance retains 96.47 % after 1000 charge–discharge processes which provides potential as supercapacitors.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has emerged as a prominent nanomaterial in photoelectrocatalytic water splitting due to its appropriate energy band and low production cost. However, its low-density active site and poor-efficiency electron transfer have essentially limited the photoelectrocatalytic properties. In this present study, we have proposed a simple yet novel ammoniated molybdenum disulfide with a unique 1T/2H heterostructure as the photoelectrocatalyst via a facile hydrothermal reaction. The presence of the 1T phase in MoS 2 is found to enhance the electronic conductivity as well as boost the density of the active site, resulting in an increase in efficiency for both electron transfer and mass transport. More importantly, the synergistic effect of the 1T/2H heterostructure of MoS 2 has been demonstrated to improve the photoelectrocatalytic properties.

Hydrogen, a new energy source that emits no carbon and has a high energy content, has recently attracted significant attention. The CoS 2 /MoS 2 catalyst was produced using a one-step hydrothermal synthesis process. With a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the CoS 2 /MoS 2 catalyst shows an overpotential of 116.8 mV for the HER under the 300 W Xe lamp's solar simulation, a 23 % improvement over the dark condition. Both the properly prohibited bandwidths of CoS 2 and MoS 2 , which promote the creation of photogenerated carriers and the existence of a p-n junction between them, are responsible for improving the photo-enhanced HER performance. The photoinduced electro-hole pairs' separation is improved by this p-n junction, reducing their likelihood of recombination and thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic ability of the system. This work demonstrates the possibility of photoelectric synergistic enhancement of the electrocatalytic performance of transition metal sulfides.

The practical applications of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have been significantly impeded by the heavy shuttle effect and slow bidirectional conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). In this study, a hierarchical NiS2/1T-MoS2 nanocomposite is utilized as a functionalized separator modifier to overcome the challenges. The MoS2 nanosheets are vertically and uniformly aligned on the surface of NiS2 microspheres, constructing a hierarchical yolk–shell structure. The NiS2 support not only significantly reduces the agglomeration of MoS2 nanosheets but also effectively stabilizes their 1T-phase structure, which is highly desirable for high-performance Li–S batteries. The Li–S battery with the NiS2/MoS2–CNT-modified separator delivers an excellent initial specific capacity of 1228 mA h g–1 at 0.2 C with a high-capacity retention of 85% over 100 cycles. It even achieves a discharge capacity of 722 mA h g–1 at 5 C. Furthermore, it maintains remarkable cycling stability with only 0.051% capacity decay per cycle during the long-term cycles at 1 C. This study not only provides a viable scheme for separator modifier design toward advanced Li–S batteries but also offers a universal route for stabilizing the 1T-phase structure of MoS2.

Manipulation of wavefront lies at the core of next-generation information technologies. Compared to metal and dielectric metasurfaces, atomic 2D materials exhibit excellent prospects toward fulfilling ultra-thin thickness requirements in flat optics in wavefront shaping, with thickness much smaller than those of traditional bulky devices. However, phase manipulation by light propagating through atomic 2D materials is suppressed due to its sub-nanometer thickness. Here, an approach is reported to realize reflection phase singularities by establishing a zero-reflection point in a monolayer MoS 2 -based multilayer system, which broadens topological study beyond polarization singularity. This is achieved through the creation of a multilayer Fabry-Perot-type interference, and a pronounced phase change in the reflected light is realized due to the high absorption of monolayer MoS 2 in the studied wavelength range. As an application, a rapid, sensitive, and label-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCov) antigen is demonstrated with a detection limit of 10 −12 M L −1 (62 pg ml −1 ) by using monolayer MoS 2 based optical biosensor. In addition to offering a comprehensive study in phase singularity, efficient wavefront engineering based on the reflective system using materials is presented with atomic thickness which may greatly simplify optical architecture in flat optics, and promote its development toward compactness and integrated functions.

Uniform MoS 2 nanosheets assembling three-dimensional nanospheres are prepared by using a facile hydrothermal procedure with SiO 2 nanospheres as the template. The morphologies and structure of MoS 2 nanospheres are thorough characterized and evaluated as electrode material for supercapacitors . Galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements reveal that MoS 2 nanospheres deliver a specific capacity of 683 F/g at 1 A/g, and the specific capacity retains about 85.1% after 10000 cycles. An aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor is fabricated by employing MoS 2 nanospheres and activated carbon as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively. The specific capacitance is 65.33 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. An energy density of 20.42 Wh/kg is obtained at power density of 750.31 kW/kg. The results show an attractive performance to take advantage of MoS 2 nanosheets assembling three-dimensional nanospheres as electrode material for supercapacitors . Two cells in series can easily light the light-emitting diode lamp brightly, further demonstrates the high energy storage capability of the prepared MoS 2 material.
