A hygroscopic layer plays an important role in improving the output abilities of energy generation from ubiquitous moisture, whose mechanism is unclear. Herein, three kinds of hydrogels with different pore structures/functional groups are designed as hygroscopic layers, and a universal strategy was proposed to assemble them into hydrogel-based moisture-electric generators (HMEGs). The hydrogels’ pore structure affects the moisture absorption rate, while the functional groups regulate the diffusion path of water. HMEG’s power generation is a synergistic effect of ionic diffusion and streaming potential, which is closely related to the water diffusion within the material and is not directly related to the amount of moisture absorption. HMEG, which absorbs moisture quickly, stores water efficiently, and releases moisture slowly, has an excellent performance and stable voltage output. Based on this mechanism, HMEG employed the calcium chloride-poly(vinyl alcohol)-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (CPVPN), semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogel as the hygroscopic layer showed an open-circuit voltage as high as 0.34 V and a power density of 33.23 μA cm–3. This study opens a perspective on hydrogel HMEG and provides insights into high-performance HMEG design.

In recent years, the demand for transparent substrates (e.g. windows, mirrors and photovoltaic glass) with anti-fogging performances has increased, while conventional anti-fogging coatings, like single-component organic coatings (PVA, PAA, PAAm), show poor stability and cannot maintain their performance stably under harsh environments. In this work, KH570@TiO 2 plays the role of a bottom layer (KT coating) to increase roughness and binding, where the hydrolysis of KH570 anchors the substrate and provides active sites for the binding of the top coating, and the addition of the TiO 2 enhances UV shielding properties. A composite PVA-AAm-POSS-NH 2 gel (PAP coating) served as the top layer, which contains a large number of hydrophilic groups and thus endow the composite coating with satisfactory anti-fogging performance. The strong bonding force provided by the KT coating and the tight physical entanglement of the PAP coating endow the double-layer coating (PAPKT coating) stable anti-fogging performance (60 times of tape peeling test, 100 times of sandpaper friction test, and sand-punching test), and 48 s icing delay performance. The multi-performances make this work great potential in automotive glass as well as building facades to cope with complex situations.

Phase change materials (PCMs), capable of absorbing or releasing substantial energy during phase transitions, represent a promising class of clean energy solutions. Owing to their eco-friendliness, excellent thermal reliability, recyclability, and high energy storage density, PCMs have found widespread applications in food preservation, energy systems, construction, and other fields. The encapsulation method of PCMs critically determines their practical applicability and commercial value, making it a focal point of research. This study improves upon the conventional "one-pot" method by employing a Pickering emulsion process to obtain phase-change microcapsules, achieving primary encapsulation of PCMs through a self-assembled core-shell structure. Subsequently, electrospinning technology is utilized to fabricate fibers with a sheath-core-shell structure, realizing secondary encapsulation of PCMs. As demonstrated in this study, this innovative stabilization strategy achieves an encapsulation efficiency as high as 81.09 %, while the composite film maintains exceptional thermal reliability even after 500 thermal cycles. The entire process uses water as the sole solvent, incorporates low-cost raw materials, and follows a simple and eco-friendly production protocol, resulting in products that are both environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Moreover, the raw materials and fabrication process fully comply with food safety standards, highlighting their significant potential for flexible food packaging applications. This dual-immobilization strategy exhibits broad applicability in oil-water biphasic system, ensuring effective encapsulation while avoiding complex and time-consuming synthesis processes. With strong potential for large-scale industrial production, this approach provides a novel solution to PCM encapsulation challenges and significantly enhances the practical utility of phase change materials in real-world applications.

Although polyacrylamide-based hydrogel exhibits excellent swelling and migration properties, it is more desirable for hydrogels with high compressive strength, flexible deformation, and rapid degradability for petroleum extraction. Herein, the core–shell structure PAM@PVA composite hydrogel achieves enhanced plugging strength through the Hofmeister effect of the PVA core and rapid degradability through the self-degrading ester bond of the flexible PAM shell, resulting in macroscopic and microscale hydrogels for oilfield fracturing and deep profile control. After the PVA network forms intramolecular hydrogen bonds by freeze–thaw and soaking in Na2SO4 brine, the PAM@PVA hydrogels reach a compressive strength of 5.62 MPa at 60% strain, which is three times that of PAM hydrogels. In the simulated fracturing plugging pressure resistance test, the macroscopic PAM@PVA hydrogels with the soft shell and hard core achieve a plugging strength of 2.48 MPa, effectively preventing migration during the plugging perforation process. At the high temperature (90 °C), the composite hydrogels completely degrade into polymer solution within 72 h due to the ester-bond hydrolysis of PAM and hydrogen-bond disruption of PVA. At the same time, the released linear polymers enhance oil recovery by 3%, resulting in up to 57% oil recovery. The high plugging strength, flexible deformation, and controllable self-degradation of PAM@PVA hydrogel offer a novel approach to improving oil recovery processes in petroleum engineering.

Conducting polymer (CP) hydrogels that possess electronic and ionic conducting behaviors have attracted increasing attention as flexible electronic materials. Due to the insoluble and infusible nature of CPs (e.g., polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), etc.), the performance of their hydrogels is typically restricted, especially when the hydrogel was constructed through the in situ polymerization of aniline or pyrrole monomers. In this study, a method to prepare robust and highly conducting hydrogels at a large scale was developed with highly conducting PPy nanotubes (PPy NTs) and an interpenetrating network (IPN) of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The PVA/PAA IPN contains covalent cross-linking points, ionic coordination, and hydrogen bonding sites. This structure endows the hydrogel with excellent strength and toughness and provides effective stabilization for PPy NTs. The obtained PPyNT/PAA/PVA hydrogels exhibit tensile strengths higher than 4.0 MPa, and the conductivity reached 5.3 S m−1 with a PPy NT content of 0.63 wt%. As the PPy NTs effectively bonded with the hydrogel matrix network, the PPyNT/PAA/PVA hydrogels exhibit a linear relationship of conductivity change vs. strain in a wide strain range of 0–500%, with a steady gauge factor (GF) of ca. 1.38. Benefiting from preparation feasibility, the variation trends of hydrogel conductivity, deformation ability, and sensing properties were systematically studied, providing a reference for high-performance strain sensor materials.

This paper utilizes an improved intercalation exfoliation and liquid-phase coating approach to effectively fabricate two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide van der Waals thin films on silk fibroin/polyvinyl alcohol substrate (MoS 2 @SF/PVA), which are then integrated into highly flexible, sensitive, and biocompatible piezoresistive strain-gauge sensors. This methodology is conducive for large-scale production, characterized by low production costs and high flexibility in terms of substrate selection. Experimental findings reveal that the as-fabricated sensor achieves peak sensitivity with a MoS 2 layer thickness of 80 nm, boasting a high gauge factor (GF) of up to 290 and a resistance reduction of only 6–7 % after enduring 3000 testing cycles. Ultimately, the remarkable compatibility of silk fibroin biomaterials with skin allows for this flexible piezoresistive strain-gauge sensor to seamlessly adhere to human skin, without requiring any additional measures or imposing any discomfort. It proficiently captures the subtle surface texture of the skin and accurately senses human pulse signals, underscoring its considerable potential for innovative applications within the field of flexible electronics.

The enduring non-biodegradability of conventional pesticide packaging films, coupled with the potential health risks posed by pesticide residues adhering to their surfaces, has ignited substantial interest in the advancement of biodegradable and water-soluble carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)-based films. This study presents a green, environmentally sustainable approach using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to enhance the synthesis of ethanol lignin/CMC-based double-crosslinked water-soluble composite membranes (LCCPx), which, when dissolved in water upon application, automatically release pesticides, thereby eliminating the need for manual intervention to open the packaging. The results demonstrated that the PVA content significantly affected both the mechanical and gas barrier properties of the composite films. Compared to LCCP0, LCCP20 demonstrated enhanced mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 41.9 MPa, elongation of 17 %, and a toughness of 573.99 kJ/m³. Furthermore, LCCP20 presents itself as an exceptionally promising candidate for the continued advancement of water-soluble multifunctional membrane technologies, attributable to its outstanding UV resistance stability, excellent water solubility, and biodegradability. This film not only demonstrates substantial potential as an environmentally sustainable and biodegradable water-soluble packaging material but also establishes a promising research avenue for replacing conventional plastic films in pesticide inner packaging.

Diabetic wounds are one of the most problematic complications among diabetic patients, often progressing to chronic, persistent ulcers that are a leading cause of amputation and disability. The constant accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at diabetic wound sites, along with bacterial infection and an excess of pro-inflammatory M1-type macrophages, are key factors contributing to the difficulty of wound healing. Nanofibrous membranes can be used directly in diabetic wounds with the dual function of adsorbing tissue exudate and releasing drugs. Cerium oxide nanoparticles can be used in nanotherapy to reduce the accumulation of chronic inflammatory substances due to their excellent antioxidant properties. The antioxidant properties can be further improved by doping with other metal elements. In this paper, we constructed a nanofibrous membrane based on cerium manganese nanoparticles (CeMn NPs) for the treatment of diabetic wounds. The nanofibrous membrane was loaded with cerium manganese nanoparticles and nitric oxide donor SNAP, named PVA-CS-CeMn NPs-SNAP nanofibrous membrane. The PVA-CS-CeMn NPs-SNAP nanofibrous membrane was able to cover the wounds of diabetic mice with slow release of CeMn NPs and SNAP. The nanoparticles could scavenge ROS accumulated at the wound site and regulate the macrophage phenotype at the wound site, increasing the proportion of anti-inflammatory M2-type macrophages. In addition, SNAP had antimicrobial and vascular regenerative effects at the wound site. Together, these synergistic effects resulted in faster wound healing and reduced tissue inflammation in diabetic mice, and no organ toxicity was observed. Overall, our results indicate that PVA-CS-CeMn NPs-SNAP nanofibrous membranes have significant potential for the treatment of diabetic wounds and provide a strong scientific basis for the development of novel diabetic wound treatment materials.

Conductive hydrogels are promising for flexible wearable sensors due to their flexibility, conductivity, and sensing capabilities. Herein, a multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol/4-carboxyphenylboronic acid/carboxymethyl cellulose@polyaniline hydrogel is fabricated by embedding spherical carboxymethyl cellulose@polyaniline microspheres into a PVA/4-carboxyphenylboronic acid hydrogel. The synergistic effect of borate and hydrogen bonds forms a dynamic dual-crosslinking network, endowing the hydrogel with high tensile strength (0.31 MPa), excellent stretchability (1415%), fast self-healing ability, and good conductivity (3.57 S m −1 ). Notably, the engineered hydrogel is assembled as a dual-responsive sensor, exhibiting strain and temperature sensing for wearable electronics and healthcare monitoring applications. As a strain sensor, it showed good sensitivity (gauge factor: 1.88), fast response/recovery time (about 200 ms), and cyclic stability, allowing accurate detection of joint movements and facial expressions. As a temperature sensor, its temperature-sensing capability relies on the synergistic effect of the dynamic rearrangement of borate (B O C) bonds and hydrogen bonds, PANI's temperature-dependent conductivity, and ionic mobility. Thus, it exhibits a negative temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR = −1.52%/°C) in the temperature range of 20°C–60°C, enabling continuous body temperature monitoring and detection of febrile states. This work provides a general strategy for self-healing dual-responsive sensor hydrogels for wearable electronics in healthcare and human-robot interfaces.

Conductive hydrogels (CHs) are promising for flexible electronics in artificial intelligence and digital healthcare, but they still lack mechanical durability and long-term stability. Here, sustainable lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) were used to strengthen the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/transition metal carbide and nitride (MXene) hydrogels through a simple “one-pot” procedure (abbreviated as P(LxMy)z). Owing to the rigid and polar phenolic hydroxyl groups on lignin, LCNFs formed dense hydrogen bonding with both PVA and MXene, dissipated the external stress, and endowed the composite hydrogels with superior mechanical properties (a tensile strength of ∼1.55 MPa and a toughness of ∼2.85 MJ m–3), conductivity (∼0.13 S m–1), stability, and biocompatibility. Combining all these features, the P(LxMy)z hydrogels demonstrated a sensitive (GF value of ∼2.3) and durable (more than 2400 cycles) response to deformation, which can be applied as an epidermal sensor to detect both drastic (e.g., joint movement) and subtle (e.g., swallow and frown) human motions and even to detect information on different speeches and handwritings. Thus, this work paves a new way to build tough, stable, and biocompatible CHs, demonstrating significant potential for durable and precise epidermal sensing applications.

Citalopram is a widely employed antidepressant and commonly produced by intramolecular etherification of 5-cyanodiol with highly corrosive and toxic p -toluenesulfonyl chloride as co-reactant. In this work, citalopram was synthesized using a catalyst-membrane coupling reactor (CMCR) in the absence of p -toluenesulfonyl chloride. The CMCR comprised a solid acid resin catalyst (HND-2) and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membrane supported on a polymeric hollow fiber to achieve in-situ water separation through vapor permeation. The results revealed that incorporating the PVA membrane increased the conversion of 5-cyanodiol hydrochloride and selectivity towards citalopram by approximately 9.2 % and 4.0 %, respectively. It was found that water adsorbed and confined on HND-2 catalyst created micro-environment for the dissociation of hydrogen ions and etherification reaction. The Karl Fischer titration revealed that vapor permeation by PVA membrane effectively and completely removed the generated water during the reaction, resulting in an improvement in catalytic performance. The PVA membrane also maintained its separation capacity in six reaction cycles, demonstrating a good reusability in CMCR for the etherification of 5-cyanodiol hydrochloride.

Flexible solid-state supercapacitors show great potential in the field of portable wearable electronic devices. However, the preparation of hydrogel electrolytes with high mechanical properties and ionic conductivity remains a challenge. In this paper, hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and illite were used as organic and inorganic additives, respectively, for the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to prepare composite hydrogels using the cyclic freeze–thaw method. A dense and uniform three-dimensional network structure of hydrogels was formed through the synergistic action of hydrogen bonding between PVA, HEC, and illite. When the contents of HEC and illite were 3 wt% and 6 wt%, respectively, the composite hydrogel (PH3I6) exhibited excellent mechanical properties, achieving a fracture stress of 1.41 MPa and a fracture strain of 500%. Its compressive strength was increased by 423% compared to that of the PVA hydrogel. The ionic conductivity of the PH3I6 hydrogel electrolyte reached 29.72 mS cm−1. The supercapacitor assembled with the PH3I6 hydrogel electrolyte exhibited a specific capacitance of 292 F g−1 and an energy density of 10.14 Wh kg−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, the PH3I6 supercapacitor maintained a capacity retention rate of 96.52% and demonstrated a coulombic efficiency of 99.28% after 10 000 cycles at 1 A g−1. Additionally, this PH3I6 supercapacitor possessed excellent flexibility and stability, functioning normally even when subjected to bending, hammering, and puncturing, thereby demonstrating broad application prospects.
