The simultaneous introduction of shallow acceptors and elimination of donor compensation is the key issue toward achieving p-type ZnO. Herein, through accurate control of the Li dopant configuration and systematic spectroscopy characterization, we obtain direct evidence that Li doping creates isolated VZn in ZnO with a luminescence peak around 414 nm (∼3.0 eV), and at the same time, removes donors. Interestingly, the same defect emission is also created by simple H2O2 treatment and appeared in a ZnO single crystal with abundant metal vacancies, unambiguously demonstrating its shallow acceptor characteristic.

This study synthesized graphene oxide (GO)/zinc oxide (ZnO)/silver (Ag) composite materials and investigated their photocatalytic degradation performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light irradiation. GO/ZnO/Ag composites with different ratios were prepared via an impregnation and chemical reduction method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that under optimal conditions (20 mg/L CIP concentration, 15 mg catalyst dosage, GO/ZnO-3%/Ag-doping ratio, and pH 5), the GO/ZnO/Ag composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a maximum degradation rate of 82.13%. This catalyst effectively degraded ciprofloxacin under light irradiation, showing promising potential for water purification applications.

With nano-ZnO, methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl acrylate (EA), and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) as reaction monomers, potassium persulfate as initiator, nano-ZnO/fluorine polyacrylate linen fabric finishing agent was prepared by semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization to improve the hydrophobicity and anti-fouling performance of linen fabric. The structure and properties of the film and the finished fabric were characterized and analyzed by1HNMR, FT-IR, and TG. The results showed that the nano-ZnO/fluorine emulsion was successfully prepared with a particle size of about 46 nm, which was combined with linen. The contact angle of the finished linen fabric to water was 130.33°, which indicated that the finished linen fabric had good hydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the anti-fouling performance of the finished linen fabric was also improved. The introduction of nano-ZnO and organic fluorine in turn made linen fabric had the properties of the heat-resistant stability, UV resistance, antibacterial properties, and yellowing resistance.

Flexible pressure sensors have wide range of applications in fields such as electronic skin, medical detection and wearable devices. In this paper, a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor based on Cu mesh/ZnO nanorod/graphene pressure-active layer is designed. Cu mesh is used as the conductive substrate, which not only enhances sensor performance but also expands the detection range of the sensor with its interlaced grid structure. To enhance the stability of the sensor, the graphene-functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film is inserted between this active layer and the bottom electrodes, which prevents the direct contact between the Cu mesh and the electrodes, increases the electron transport channel and enhances the responsiveness of the sensor. The sensor shows sensitivity of 0.4 kPa -1 over pressure range of 0-0.5 kPa, as well as response time of 413 ms. Based on the excellent characteristics, a 4×4 pressure sensor array is constructed for the application of pressure sensors in daily life and human activity detection, which enables high-resolution detection and provides a reliable idea for the design of flexible sensors in the future.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a primary culprit in skin aging and cancer development. Inorganic UV filters, including ZnO and TiO2, are typical antiultraviolet agents in sunscreen, but they lack antioxidant activity for scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). Inspired by the UV shielding mechanism of plant cell wall lamellar structures, a 2D/2D ZnO/dealkali lignin (DL) nanosheet composite was prepared using an in situ templating method. Various mass ratios of DL to ZnCl2 were adjusted to investigate the effect of DL addition on UV shielding. The results show that ZnO/DL-1.5% effectively shields ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation due to the hydrogen bonding interaction between ZnO and DL, rendering the exposure of the (002) plane of ZnO, which increases the scattering and absorption of photons. Additionally, the ZnO/DL nanosheet composite scavenges excessive reactive nitrogen species and ROS at low concentrations, as the phenolic hydroxyl groups in DL donate electrons to neutralize free radicals, thereby terminating radical chain reactions. This ZnO/DL nanosheet composite, with antiultraviolet and antioxidant functions, can be considered a promising and safe ingredient for sunscreen cream.

The In2O3-modified ZnO@SnO2 core–shell nanosheets (NSs) were synthesized via an innovative and facile route that combines the modified hydrothermal method with an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. The self-limiting reactions inherent to ALD facilitate precise control over the film thickness, enabling the design of well-defined core–shell nanostructures for gas-sensing applications. Evaluation of gas-sensing properties revealed that the construction of the ZnO@SnO2 core–shell heterostructure combined with In2O3 surface modification markedly improved the sensing performance. The optimized ZnO@SnO2/In2O3 sensor with a 20 nm SnO2 shell (denoted as Z@S/I-20) exhibited a high response (Ra/Rg = 148.6) toward 100 ppm ethanol at 350 °C, which was approximately 3.6 and 1.6 times higher than that of ZnO/In2O3 NSs (40.3) and unmodified ZnO@SnO2 core–shell NSs with 20 nm SnO2 (91.6), respectively. Furthermore, the Z@S/I-20 gas sensor demonstrated a response/recovery time of 140.2:36.6 s, remarkable selectivity toward ethanol, and an ultralow detection limit of 64 ppb. The significantly enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of heterojunction formation, the porous mesh morphology of In2O3 nanowires, and the optimized SnO2 shell thickness, as systematically discussed in this work. These findings highlight the potential of the proposed synthesis route and sensor design for the development of high-performance microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based gas sensors that can be applied to ethanol detection.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising strategy for upcycling waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) into terephthalic acid, but the continuous degradation of PET was hindered by the use of high-pressurized flammable H 2 and the low degradation efficiency due to the slow H 2 diffusion in PET melt. Herein, we report the tandem strategy of Zn(II)-σ-Lewis acid/addition/nucleophilic attack using ZnO that achieves the atmospheric, organic solvent-free and continuous degradation of waste PET into terephthalic acid (yield>97 %). By activating the carbonyl group of PET, ZnO promotes β -scission to form vinyl-terminated intermediate, which subsequently undergoes the in-situ addition with the generated OH − nucleophilic site and the bound H 2 O on Zn II . In atmospheric conditions, PET is continuously degraded at a rate of 2.5 kg h −1 in laboratory, which is four orders of magnitude higher than the state-of-the-art catalysts.

Hydrogen energy, as an efficient and clean energy carrier, shows great potential in fuel cells and energy storage systems. However, the flammable and explosive nature of hydrogen poses a serious challenge to its safe use, and the development of highly sensitive and fast-response hydrogen sensors is crucial. In this work, a novel ZnO/MXene based gas sensor was developed for applied in hydrogen detection by using electrostatic self-assembly technology. The effect of the MXene ratio on enhancing the hydrogen-sensing properties of ZnO and the heterostructure synergistic sensing mechanism of the ZnO/MXene composite were elucidated. Results showed that the composite material exhibits optimal performance when the mass ratio of ZnO to MXene is 10:1. The ZnO/MXene composites exhibited a sensitivity of 702 at 100 ppm hydrogen, representing a 26 % improvement over pure ZnO, and achieved notable response at an ultralow concentration of 50 ppb (247). Meanwhile, the response/recovery times of composites were shortened to 5.4 s and 120.6 s, with a 74 % improvement in response time compared with pure ZnO. In gas selectivity tests, composites indicate pronounced affinity for hydrogen. Furthermore, in the detection of mixed gases created by simulated lithium battery thermal runaway, performing an average response time reduced by 71.2 % compared to pure ZnO, an average recovery time reduced by 12.6 %, and an average response value enhanced by 41.8 %, which demonstrated the potential of ZnO/MXene sensors in identifying risks within Li-ion battery systems. This work will provide a theoretical basis for the design and application of high-performance hydrogen sensors.

Gastric cancer is a common malignant tumour. Copper‐induced cell death, a recently discovered form of metal ion‐related cell death, has garnered significant attention from researchers. We synthesised a multifunctional nanoparticle, ZnO@CuEA, and characterised its morphology using transmission electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity was analysed via CCK8 assays and calcein‐AM staining. The tumour‐targeting capability of ZnO@CuEA was validated using confocal microscopy and in vivo imaging experiments. RNA‐seq and proteomic analysis were conducted to assess changes in mRNA and protein expression before and after ZnO@CuEA treatment. Lysosomal β‐galactosidase staining was employed for cellular senescence detection, and protein expression levels were analysed via Western blot. Finally, in vivo experiments demonstrated the tumour‐inhibitory effect of ZnO@CuEA. ZnO@CuEA is a multifunctional nanoparticle capable of targeting tumour cells and inducing cuproptosis. In vivo experiments showed that ZnO@CuEA exhibits significant antitumor activity. The multifunctional nanoparticles synthesised in this study provide a novel therapeutic approach for cancer treatment.

In this work, hollow-structured nanofibers with densely and uniformly distributed ZnO nanorods were successfully prepared by a combination of coaxial electrospinning, heat treatment, and hydrothermal synthesis, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. The morphological and structural characteristics of hollow ZnO nanofibers obtained at different heat treatment temperatures were systematically investigated, and their photocatalytic degradation performances were compared through degrading methylene blue (MB) under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. It was found that the hollow ZnO nanofibers obtained by heat treatment at 280 °C exhibited the best photocatalytic degradation performance due to their optimal morphology and structure. Their photocatalytic degradation efficiencies for MB under 3 h of UV light and natural sunlight were 94.70% and 92.95%, respectively. Furthermore, cyclic stability tests were conducted on the optimal sample, revealing that its degradation efficiency remained at 89.96% after three cycles, demonstrating its excellent reusability.

The extensive applications of ZnO nanoparticles (nano ZnO) and dimethoate have increased the risk of people’s coexposure to nano ZnO and dimethoate. Therefore, we evaluated in this study the effects of nano or bulk ZnO on dimethoate-induced toxicity in mice. The serum biochemical parameters, biodistributions, oxidative stress responses, and histopathological changes in mice were measured after intragastric administration of nano or bulk ZnO and/or dimethoate for 14 days. Oral administration of nano or bulk ZnO at a dose of 50 mg/kg did not cause obvious injury in mice. In contrast, oral administration of dimethoate at a dose of 15 mg/kg induced observable oxidative damage in mice. Co-administration of nano or bulk ZnO with dimethoate significantly increased Zn accumulation by 30.7 ± 1.7% or 29.7 ± 2.4% and dimethoate accumulation by 42.8 ± 2.1% or 46.6 ± 2.9% in the liver, respectively. The increased accumulations of dimethoate and Zn in the liver reduced its cholinesterase activity from 5.64 ± 0.45 U/mg protein to 4.67 ± 0.42 U/mg protein or 4.76 ± 0.45 U/mg protein for nano or bulk ZnO, respectively. Furthermore, the accumulations of dimethoate and Zn in liver also increased hepatic oxidative stress, resulting in severe liver damage. Both nano and bulk ZnO dissolved quickly in acidic gastric fluid, regardless of particle size; therefore, they had nearly identical enhanced effects on dimethoate-induced toxicity in mice.

Tetrapod-like ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 heterostructure composites were designed and fabricated for ethanol detection. Sensitivity and selectivity of ZnO were significantly enhanced after coating with ZnFe 2 O 4 , as it formed heterostructure and special morphology. The tetrapod-like structure formed numerous three-dimensional hollow holes as channels for the gas diffusion in the inner and outer surfaces of materials simultaneously, providing large specific areas as “reaction field” for gas adsorption. Additionally, the heterojunction increased oxygen adsorption, resulting in the formation of more chemisorbed oxygen species for reaction with the target gas. Further, in contrast to aggregated structures, the ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 tetrapods were separated from each other, and the electrons conducting between the tetrapod-shape ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 had to pass through the modified surface sensing layer at the boundary; thus, the response of the heterojunction to target gas significantly affected the overall resistance. Consequently, ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 exhibited an excellent responses value of 28.11–500 ppm ethanol gas. The sensor exhibited good sensing repeatability and long-term stability, which maintained 93% of its original response after 30 days. The response time and selectivity to ethanol were also enhanced compared with the pristine T-ZnO. Therefore, the proposed strategy may facilitate the design and fabrication of binary transition metal oxide based heterostructure for ethanol vapor sensing.
