Construction of a hierarchical h-BN/DLC composite coating on Ce-doped plasma electrolytic oxidation film for enhanced corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy

Lihao Yang,Pengpeng Yu,Binglong Jiao,Qingwen Yang,Shuqi Ding,Pingping Jia,Yaokun Pan

To address the inherent microporosity and inadequate long-term corrosion protection capacity of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) ceramic coatings deposited on 6063 aluminum alloy substrates, a hierarchical Ce-doped PEO/h-BN/diamondlike carbon (DLC) composite coating architecture was fabricated via combined hydrothermal pore sealing and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) post treatment routes. The microstructure, chemical composition, and corrosion behavior of the coatings were systematically characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results demonstrated that hydrothermal treatment effectively introduced h-BN nanosheets into discharge channels and the micropores of the Ce-doped PEO coating. XPS, Raman, and FT-IR analyses confirmed the successful incorporation of h-BN while preserving its characteristic layered structure. Subsequently, a continuous DLC film containing typical sp 2 /sp 3 hybridized carbon bonds was successfully deposited by PECVD. Among all tested processing parameter combinations, the composite coating modified with 1 g L −1 h-BN hydrothermal sealing followed by 60 min PECVD deposition delivered optimal comprehensive anticorrosion performance, featured by a minimum corrosion current density of 1.76 × 10 −9  A cm −2 and the highest impedance response in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The significantly improved anticorrosion performance originates from the dual synergistic barrier effect derived from h-BN nanosheet pore plugging and the dense DLC outer capping layer. Specifically, h-BN nanosheets effectively reduced pore connectivity and prolonged the diffusion path of corrosive species, whereas the dense DLC overlayer served as additional physical barrier that suppressed electrolyte penetration and interfacial charge transfer. This study provides valuable experimental guidance and theoretical support for the design of graded ceramic-carbon composite protective coatings for aluminum alloys serving in high chloride marine environments.

A green, robust, and versatile BN nanosheet unidirectional aerogel encapsulated phase change material for effective thermal management of electronics and solar-thermoelectric conversion

Linda Lv,Hong Ai,Taorui Chen,Wanting Zhu,Yi Guo,Lijie Dong,Shaokun Song

Thermal harvesting and storage using phase change materials (PCMs) plays a critical role in thermal management and solar energy utilization. However, the intrinsically low thermal conductivity, solid–liquid leakage, and poor solar-thermoelectric conversion capacity are significant challenges for applications of PCMs in these fields. Herein, we report a green, robust, and versatile carboxymethyl cellulose/boron nitride nanosheet unidirectional aerogel (CBNA) with extraordinary mechanical properties to encapsulate lauric acid (LA). The obtained LA@CBNA composite PCM (CPCM) exhibits an ultrahigh latent heat of 190.4 J g−1, which is up to 98.1% that of LA. Compared with LA, the thermal conductivity of LA@CBNA is significantly increased from 0.2011 to 1.1425 W m−1 K−1. The preeminent thermophysical properties endow this CPCM with an extraordinary thermal management performance in electronic devices. The thermal management tests show that the temperature of a working chip can be reduced by 36.1 °C at 2.5 W. The addition of a small trace of graphene (10% of boron nitride nanosheets) can endow the CPCM with an excellent solar-thermal conversion efficiency of 88.89%, while the thermal conductivity is further improved to 1.2856 W m−1 K−1. Meanwhile, a solar-thermal energy conversion and storage system integrated with a thermoelectric generator can achieve 54.56% solar-thermoelectric conversion efficiency.

An efficient multifunctional catalyst for one-pot synthesis of methyl isobutyl ketone: Phosphor-doped h-BN with adjustable acid-base property as support

Baining Lin,Fan Xu,Yingjie Hu,Xuhong Du,Yingping Zou,Huasheng Xie,Kang Wang,Yonghua Zhou

Developing multifunctional catalyst for cascade reactions such as one-pot synthesis of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) from acetone and hydrogen is critical for practical applications. Here, we adjusted the acid-base property by doping phosphor into h-BN and used it as support for Pd. Experiments and characterizations indicated that the phosphor-doped h-BN could catalyze the aldol condensation and dehydration by modulating the ratio of BNH 2 , N 2 P=O and N 3 P-OH groups thereon. An acetone conversion of 58.24% and MIBK selectivity of 68.39% were achieved over Pd/BN( H )P-E-0.07, providing a new avenue for metal-free materials utilized in the cascade reactions.

Convenient Synthesis of 3D Fluffy PtPd Nanocorals Loaded on 2D h-BN Supports as Highly Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

Hua Zhang,Linlin Xu,Yue Tian,Anxin Jiao,Shuang Li,Xiangdong Liu,Ming Chen,Feng Chen

Fuel cells hold great promise for clean and sustainable energy, whereas their widespread commercialization strongly depends on the development of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Herein, three-dimensional fluffy PtPd nanocorals (NCs) loaded on two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) supports were successfully achieved by a simple one-step strategy based on ultraviolet (UV) laser-excited photochemical reaction. As for alcohol oxidation reaction, the h-BN/PtPd NCs with unique nanoporous surface provide more enhanced electrocatalytic performances than many previous nanocatalysts, owing to abundant active sites and plentiful charge-transfer channels formed on high electrode–electrolyte contact area. Especially, the mass activity of h-BN/PtPd NCs is about 962.8 mA mgPtPd–1 in methanol oxidation reaction in alkaline solution, which can be maintained at ∼274.9 mA mgPtPd–1 (28.6% of the initial one) even after a 5 × 104 s durability test. The present work not only offers an advanced electrocatalyst for long-term fuel cells but also provides a versatile route for construction of complex metallic nanocomposites on 2D supports, holding great potential for diverse energy-related applications.

The synergistic effects of the micro-BN and nano-Al2O3 in micro-nano composites on enhancing the thermal conductivity for insulating epoxy resin

Wancong Bian,Tong Yao,Ming Chen,Cheng Zhang,Tao Shao,Ying Yang

Epoxy resin has been widely used in electrical and electronics industries due to its excellent adhesion and insulating properties. However, the low thermal conductivity limits its application in the devices, especially under the working conditions of high frequency. In this work, the epoxy resin composites filled with binary fillers of dopamine modified micro-BN and KH550 modified nano-Al 2 O 3 were fabricated and the thermal conductivities, dielectric losses and breakdown strengths in high frequency and electrical field of the composites were studied. A high thermal conductivity of 1.182 W m −1 K −1 was realized in the composite with 22.5 wt% BN and 7.5 wt% Al 2 O 3 , which was about 700% higher than neat epoxy resin. The results of breakdown experiments in high frequency and high voltage field showed that the positive effect of the thermal conductivity increase was greater than the negative effect of the dielectric loss increase, and the notably improved breakdown time of the composite was 406% higher than that of neat epoxy. The epoxy resin composites with high thermal conductivity and excellent dielectric strength could be a potential insulating material in the electrical and electronics industries.

The effect of a carbon layer on the microstructural and mechanical properties of porous BN/Si3N4 ceramic brazed with a titanium-silicon filler

Y.L. Zhuang,T.S. Lin,S.J. Wang,P. He,D.P. Sekulic,D.C. Jia

The Ti 22 Si 78 (wt.%) braze was used to bond porous BN/Si 3 N 4 ceramic. The results revealed that the joint strength was low. In order to improve the joint strength, a carbon coated modification of the porous BN/Si 3 N 4 substrate, achieved by the pyrolysis of phenol-formaldehyde resin was suggested. The thickness of carbon layer was controlled by the volume ratio of phenol-formaldehyde resin and methyl alcohol (R/M). The effect of the carbon layer on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joint was examined. It was established that the maximum joint strength was achieved at the level of 80   MPa (as opposed to the uncoated joint with only 30   MPa) when R/M was 1:2, at the given brazing temperature. The improvement of the joint strength is attributed mainly to the formation of a SiC infiltration reaction layer, a significant population of SiC nanowires, as well as TiN 0.7 C 0.3 and TiB 2 particles.

Magnetically aligned h-BN-modified superporous carbon foam skeletons-based form-stable phase-change materials for superior thermal conductivity and photothermal conversion efficiency

Ziqian Ding,Xiaolin Qiu,Huaxuan Liu,Lingli Gu

Functional form-stable phase change materials (FPCMs) offer great promise for thermal management in transport packaging due to their stability after phase change cycle and the extension of service life. However, challenges remain in enhancing thermal conductivity and energy storage efficiencies. In this study, a magnetically aligned h-BN-embedded superporous carbon foam-based FPCM containing paraffin (M-BN-CPCMs) was fabricated via a foam polymerization method followed by high-temperature carbonization. A super-porous hydrogel (SPH) precursor was used to construct a robust, highly porous carbon skeleton to accommodate more PCMs. To further enhance thermal conductivity, h-BN was functionalized with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, and the resulting BN-Fe 3 O 4 was magnetically oriented within the carbon skeleton using a synchronous magnetization process. This novel design achieved a thermal conductivity improvement of over 90% compared to SPH. Additionally, the synergistic photothermal conversion effect achieved by the magnetic nanoparticles and carbon skeleton resulted in an outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency of approximately 90% for M-BN-CPCMs. Notably, the incorporation of BN-Fe 3 O 4 increased pore sizes, enabling higher paraffin loading capacity. The M-BN-CPCMs with large holes exhibit a remarkable phase change enthalpy of 154.9 J/g, demonstrating excellent energy storage capability, which surpasses that of superporous carbon foam skeleton-based FPCMs (CPCMs). The optimized M-BN-CPCMs demonstrated superior thermal energy storage, faster thermal charging rates, and improved thermal regulation, effectively reducing temperature fluctuations within insulated packaging. These findings underscore the potential of M-BN-CPCMs as a groundbreaking solution for energy storage and thermal management in transport packaging, addressing critical challenges in the field.

Construction of AuNPs/h-BN nanocomposites by using gold as interfacial electron transfer mediator with highly efficient degradation for levofloxacin hydrochloride and hydrogen generation

Yangqing He,Na Xu,Lucas Binnah Junior,Xing Hao,Binghua Yao,Qian Yang,Dongjie Liu,Zhanying Ma

Construction of semiconductor-assisted noble metal nanocomposites has been approved as an efficient strategy to achieve promising photocatalysts. In this paper, highly efficient AuNPs/h-BN nanocomposites have been fabricated by loading gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as interfacial electron transfer mediators onto the hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BN). The SEM and HRTEM images, together with XPS analysis revealed that AuNPs were successfully deposited onto the surface of h-BN and the layered heterojunctions were generated between AuNPs and h-BN. The optimum 15%AuNPs/h-BN nanocomposites exhibit dramatically enhanced photocatalytic performance for degradation of levofloxacin hydrochloride with 84.4% removal rate, and hydrogen evolution of 61.15 μmol within 5 h. It is almost 4 and 61 times higher than that of pure h-BN, respectively. In addition, this is the first time using h-BN based material to evaluate the elimination efficiency of levofloxacin hydrochloride. The corresponding enhanced mechanism for 15%AuNPs/h-BN can be attributed to the effective interfacial electron-hole pairs separation and migration between h-BH and AuNPs and its surface Plasmon absorption (SPA). Moreover, the possible decomposition pathways for levofloxacin hydrochloride are proposed according to the UPLC-MS analysis. Herein, we have provided a good example for removing antibiotic residues by using h-BN-based metal nanocomposites towards environmental remediation.

Internal electric field engineering regulated ionic liquid-functionalized h-BN/g-C3N4 heterojunctions for the solvent-free direct oxidation of cyclohexane to adipic acid

Kexin Li,Bin He,Huanghao Ning,Ruiyi Yan,Ruirui Wang,Ruirui Zhang,Ruixia Liu

The highly selective and direct oxidation of cyclohexane to adipic acid (AA) using molecular oxygen under solvent-free conditions represents a “dream reaction” in industrial catalysis, yet is severely hampered by the inherent chemical inertness of C-H bond and the challenging activation of O 2 . Addressing this grand challenge, we report a non-metal heterointerface engineering strategy to construct an advanced B/F-doped h-BN/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction catalyst (known as BN/CN-BF 4 ) via a facile synergistic ultrasonication and thermal treatment utilizing the ionic liquid. The resulting BN/CN-BF 4 exhibits a powerfully ability to regulate interfacial electronic microenvironment, as evidenced by spectroscopic, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations, which reveal a type-II staggered band alignment and an internal electric field (IEF) formation across the heterojunction. This precisely engineered heterointerface achieved a remarkable breakthrough in catalytic performance, yielding a high cyclohexane conversion of 18.8% with an unprecedented selectivity for AA reaching 51.3% (a significant advancement over the typical 3%-5% conversion) in solvent-free system. Mechanistic investigations established a multi-step synergistic catalytic mechanism that B-N sites and H-bonding facilitate the initial C-H bond adsorption and activation; simultaneously, the IEF-driven directional electron transfer and C-F bond formation significantly accelerate the activation of O 2 to generate highly reactive oxygen species, steering the reaction pathway directly towards the terminal product, adipic acid. This work provides a novel strategy for enhancing industrial selective oxidation by manipulating the interfacial electronic microenvironment with IEF, offering a promising route for advanced solvent-free and metal-free selective oxidation catalysts.

Synergistic enhancement of anisotropic thermal transport flexible polymer composites filled with multi-layer graphene (mG) and mussel-inspiring modified hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)

Zheng Su,Hua Wang,Xianzhu Ye,Konghu Tian,Weiqi Huang,Jing He,Yulan Guo,Xingyou Tian

In this work, we presented novel cycloaliphatic epoxy resin composites filled with multi-layer graphene (mG)/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulating. Firstly, the h-BN platelets were modified by mussel-inspired method with dopamine chemistry to obtain the modified filler h-BN@PDA. And the attachment of polydopamine molecule improved the interfacial adhesion between polymer matrix and filler. Secondly, the mG with fixed content was mixed with h-BN@PDA and then the hybrid filler mG/h-BN@PDA was added to the cycloaliphatic epoxy resin to obtain the polymer composites . Because of the high aspect of the filler, low viscosity of the polymer matrix , and assistance of the gravity force, the hybrid filler would stack alignment. It was found that the hybridization of the filler and alignment of the hybrid filler resulted in the enhancement of properties of the composites such as the thermal decomposition, mechanical (tensile strength = 5.50 MPa), thermal (through-plane ∼ 1.27 W/m K, in-plane ∼ 1.31 W/m K) and electrical insulating (electrical conductivity < 1.5 × 10 −10  S/cm) properties. The obtained composites could be applied in thermal management area.

Self-floating g-C3N4/h-BN/Au photo-thermal catalysts with unprecedented thermostability at solar-activated heating condition for reusable degradation of organic pollutants

Chang Wang,Shihao Zhou,Qingqiang Cui,Mengya Zhang,Linqi Zheng,Shuang Li,Xiangdong Liu,Ming Chen

Photo-thermal catalytic (PTC) degradation as an ideal candidate for wastewater treatment is yet suffering from the unsatisfied recyclability due to the thermal effect-exacerbated serious photocorrosion of semiconductor-based catalysts. Based on polymeric graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) hybridized with antioxidative hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and grafted with stable Au nanoparticles (NPs), we provide thermostable g-C 3 N 4 /h-BN/Au nano-catalysts for high-efficient degradation of organic dyes at solar-activated heating condition. The fantastic PTC activity with optimal degradation rate up to ∼ 0.30 min −1 is far better than most mainstream hybrid catalysts. The unprecedented thermal recyclability is convincingly verified by consecutive 10 repeated tests within 500 min measurements under solar-driven heating condition (∼60 °C), wherein the negligible drop of degradation efficiency is only ∼ 0.2% lower than pristine one. The ingenious self-floating PTC membranes can be conveniently established by immobilizing the resultant nano-catalysts into bio-carbon porous frames and viscous bacterial nano-celluloses, facilitating practical wastewater decontamination in real-world scenarios.

PDMS/functionalized h-BN/liquid metal flexible composite with dual-network structure for achieving superior thermal conductivity and low thermal resistance via interfacial grafting

Junhui Fan,Dahai Zhu,Yifan Li,Changqing Liu,Huaqing Xie,Wei Yu

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) play a crucial role in addressing the heat dissipation challenges associated with high-power electrical equipment. Apart from possessing excellent thermal conductivity, and they must also exhibit low contact thermal resistance to facilitate efficient heat transfer at the interface. In this study, a novel composite with a dual-network structure was prepared by interfacial grafting to achieve superior thermal conductivity. The composite comprises polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), functionalized boron nitride ( f -BN), and liquid metal (LM). This dual network structure effectively enhances phonon transportation and significantly improves the thermal transport performance of the composite. The thermal conductivity of the obtained composite can achieve 4.4 W/m·K, accompanied by a low contact thermal resistance of 0.32 °C·cm 2 /W. Furthermore, the dual network structure ensures the flexibility of the composite, as evidenced by the maximum elongation reaching 267.43% at a tensile strength of 0.35 MPa. This exceptional mechanical performance is expected to alleviate stress concentration issues arising from thermal expansion mismatch, thereby enhancing the practical applicability of the prepared TIMs. Overall, this study introduces a novel approach for fabricating flexible composites with high thermal conductivity and low contact thermal resistance, offering new insights into the preparation of TIMs.
