Interfacial electronic interaction of atomically dispersed IrClx on ultrathin Co(OH)2/CNTs for efficient electrocatalytic water oxidation

Yiwen Huang,Guijuan Wei,Jia He,Cuihua An,Min Hu,Miao Shu,Junfa Zhu,Shuang Yao,Wei Xi,Rui Si,Zhi-Ming Zhang,Changhua An

The exploration of highly-efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst with well-defined structure to understand specific structure-performance relationship is crucial to meet the requirement of water-splitting. Herein, we firstly used atomically dispersed IrCl x to uniformly decorate ultrathin Co(OH) 2 nanosheets to dramatically improve electrocatalytic activity. The synthesized IrCl x -Co(OH) 2 nanosheets/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibits an overpotential of 230 mV to reach 10 mA/cm 2 , which was much enhanced compared to that of pristine Co(OH) 2 /CNTs (308 mV) and commercial benchmark IrO 2 (309 mV). X-ray absorption fine structure and density functional theory simulations demonstrate strong interfacial interaction between IrCl x and Co(OH) 2 nanosheets via the Cl-Ir-O and Ir-Cl-Co bond can efficiently boost its electronic conductivity. The accelerated charge transfer promotes the formation of more positively charged O atoms around cobalt centers, which is beneficial for the deprotonation on IrCl x -Co(OH) 2 and makes the catalyst facilitate OER.

Preparation of small CNTs@Fe3O4 and alignment in carbon fabrics/epoxy composites to improve mechanical and tribological properties

Tong Zhe,Lu Hailin,Guo Feifei,Lei Wenxing,Dong Mochen,Dong Guangneng

The CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 hybrids were synthesized via a modified co-precipitation method and aligned along the through-thickness of carbon fabrics-reinforced epoxy composites (CFRPCs) by applying a weak magnetic field. The effects of the length, orientation and concentration of CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 on the mechanical and tribological properties of CFRPCs were investigated. The results showed that the modified co-precipitation method decreased the size of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (approximately 10 nm in diameter), promoting the dispersion of CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 in epoxy resin. The alignment of CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 hybrids significantly increased the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and hardness of CFRPCs. The long CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 can more effectively improve the ILSS of CFRPCs compared to short CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 . Besides, the addition of aligned CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 hybrids significant improves the tribological properties of CFRPCs. Compared to long CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 -reinforced CFRPCs, the short CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 -reinforced CFRPCs show the best tribological properties. The properties anisotropy of CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 and high CNTs@Fe 3 O 4 concentration in near surface of CFRPCs are the main reason for the improvement in tribological properties of CFRPCs.

Self-supporting N, P doped Si/CNTs/CNFs composites with fiber network for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Mingyue Gao,Zehua Tang,Mengrong Wu,Jiale Chen,Yanchun Xue,Xingmei Guo,Yuanjun Liu,Qinghong Kong,Junhao Zhang

Silicon (Si) with high theoretical capacity has attracted much attention as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the tendency of Si particles to easily expand leads to the rapid attenuation of capacity, which greatly limits their practical applications. In this work, the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) doped Si/CNTs carbon nanofibers (Si/CNTs/CNFs) composites has been fabricated and explored as electrode material for LIBs. N, P doped Si/CNTs/CNFs composites possess unique fiber network structure with suitable space, which can effective buffer volume expand during charge-discharge process. By evaluating lithium storage performances of N, P doped Si/CNTs/CNFs composites as Li-ion battery electrodes, excellent rate performance with a capacity of 529 mA h g −1 (at 5.0 A g −1 ) and remarkable cycling performance of 1142 m Ah g −1 after the 100 cycles (at 0.2 A g −1 ) are obtained. Such outstanding performances can be attributed to the unique fiber network structure and the doping of N and P, which provides a new avenue for the studies of high-performance Si based anode materials of LIBs.

Assessing the role of CNTs in H2O2/Fe(III) Fenton-like process: Mechanism, DFT calculations and ecotoxicity evaluation

Weike Zhao,Bo Zhou

In recent years, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which are emerging nanocatalysts, have received much attention in advanced oxidation processes. CNTs were introduced into H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) Fenton-like process to enhance the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in this study. The results of the study suggests that CNTs could effectively promote electron transfer from H 2 O 2 to Fe(III) and directly reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) to accelerate Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles, in which carbonyl groups and structural defects of CNTs were identified as the major active sites via SEM, Raman, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses. It was revealed that hydroxyl radical (·OH) majorly contributed to the degradation of BPA, and the generation efficiency of ·OH was significantly increased by 3.2 times with the addition of CNTs. Also, nine intermediate products were identified, and the possible degradation pathways of BPA were proposed through the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and HPLC-MS/MS analysis. The ecotoxicity evaluation of BPA demonstrates that the oxidative degradation of BPA in CNTs/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) system could effectively reduce its environmental risk. The critical experimental parameters including the dosage of Fe(III), H 2 O 2 , CNTs, initial pH and various anions (Cl − , HCO 3 – , SO 4 2− ) were investigated, and the reusability experiments indicate that CNTs maintained high stability and reusability during the reaction.

Mussel inspired polydopamine@KH560-linked hexagonal boron nitride and CNTs nanoflame retardants improve fire performance of composite coatings

Zhengwei Yang,Guoqing Xiao,Chunlin Chen,Chunyan Chen,Fei Zhong,Mingtan Wang,Rui Zou

Herein, the excellent properties of one dimension (1D) and two dimension (2D) nanoparticles were fully combined to enhance the thermal stability and flame retardancy of waterborne epoxy intumescent fire retardant (IFR) coatings. Specifically, layered hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheet-linked acidified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hybrids (BP@Si/CNTs) were prepared using polydopamine (PDA) and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) as bridging agents. The results of the fire test, furnace test and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the incorporation of 2 wt% of BP@Si/CNTs hybrids in the IFR coating significantly improved the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the char layer. The backside temperature of the BP@Si/CNTs 2.0% /EP sample decreased by 89.3 °C, the expansion rate increased by 11.53, and the residual char increased by 11.05 wt% compared to the control EP. The potential flame retardant mechanism was investigated by residual char analysis. The mechanism investigations indicated that the improved fire resistance of the composite coatings is attributed to the enhancement of the char layer by the physical barrier effect of the h-BN nanosheets and the "skeletal framework" effect of the CNTs during the combustion process.

Highly-efficient PVDF adsorptive membrane filtration based on chitosan@CNTs-COOH simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic dyes

Jingxuan Zhao,Hongxu Liu,Peng Xue,Song Tian,Shulin Sun,Xue Lv

An adsorptive membrane filtration based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with chitosan (CS) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) is prepared by method of phase conversion, and the PVDF-CS@CNTs-COOH membranes can effectively separate anionic and cationic dye wastewater. Compared to pure PVDF membranes, PVDF-CS@CNTs-COOH increases pure water flux from 36.39 (L·m −2 ·h −1 ) to 85.25 (L·m −2 ·h −1 ), an increase of nearly 230%. The membrane exhibits excellent rejection performance in the filtration of six types of dye wastewater. The modified membranes also performed well in terms of rejection of mixed anionic and cationic dyes and also have a high performance in recycling, with a flux of over 94% for both anionic and cationic dyes. In addition, the adsorption curve fitting results showed that the adsorption process was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model and Langmuir mode.

Continuous network of CNTs in poly(vinylidene fluoride) composites with high thermal and mechanical performance for heat exchangers

Min Cao,Chunyu Du,Hong Guo,Shasha Song,Xipeng Li,Baoan Li

Polymeric materials with high thermal conductivity have drawn much attention in academic and industrial field recently. Due to poor dispersion and insufficient interconnection of fillers, traditional polymer composites present not only undesirable thermal conductivity but other declined properties even with high loaded thermal conductive nanofillers . In this work, the uniform and continuous network of (3-Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) modified carbon nanotubes (A-CNTs) in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was built up by using the simple casting method. Thermal conductivity of 2.15 Wm −1 K −1 and tensile strength enhancement of 70% are achieved at 40 vol% A-CNTs loading compared with that of pure PVDF. The A-CNTs/PVDF composites exhibit an intensified thermal stability and sharply increased crystallinity (45.7%) compared with pure PVDF (28.5%). Moreover, for practical heat exchange experiment, the PVDF composites possess high heat transfer efficiency and long-last stability in corrosive water, which leads to the use of PVDF materials to supersede metal materials in heat transfers.

High temperature anti-oxidative and tunable wave absorbing SiC/Fe3Si/CNTs composite ceramic derived from a novel polysilyacetylene

Yongzhao Hou,Bo Xiao,Zhiyuan Sun,Wen Yang,Songsong Wu,Shuai Qi,Guangwu Wen,Xiaoxiao Huang

With the rapid development of high power electromagnetic (EM) equipment and high-speed aircraft, the powerful and high oxidation-resistance absorbers are fundamentally desirable for the EM field. Herein, a novel high temperature anti-oxidative SiC/Fe 3 Si/CNTs composite is synthesized by a facile polymer derived ceramic (PDC) route from a Fe-containing polysilyacetylene (PSA). The microstructure of as-prepared SiC/Fe 3 Si/CNTs composite absorber is featured by micro-sized SiC ceramic grains with spherical Fe 3 Si nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) attached to. The vector network analyzer tests show a tunable wave-absorbing performance by adjusting the thickness of layer, and the effective bandwidth (the reflection loss < −10 dB) is 3.3–16.8 GHz for the sample S-1400 (heat treatment at 1400 °C in nitrogen flow). The minimal RL value is −41.2 dB at 10.5 GHz at a thickness of 2 mm and an effective bandwidth is nearly 4 GHz (12.9–16.9 GHz) at the thickness of only 1.5 mm. Moreover, after the oxidation treatment at 800 °C in the air, this absorber maintains the main structure and shows a good high temperature oxidation resistance . This absorber still remains excellent wave absorption property, in view of a minimal RL value of −40 dB at the thickness of 3 mm and a bandwidth of 4.8 GHz (10.4–15.2 GHz) at the thickness of 2.5 mm. The mechanism of high EM wave absorption performance is studied and attributed to the impendence matching, polarization, and the magnetic properties . Thus, the SiC/Fe 3 Si/CNTs composite is a promising EM absorber for high-temperature EM wave-absorbing applications.

Liberating N-CNTs Confined Highly Dispersed Co?Nx Sites for Selective Hydrogenation of Quinolines

Wanbing Gong,Qinglin Yuan,Chun Chen,Yang Lv,Yue Lin,Changhao Liang,Guozhong Wang,Haimin Zhang,Huijun Zhao

Selective hydrogenation of quinoline and its derivatives is an important means to produce corresponding 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines for a wide spectrum of applications. A facile and efficient “laser irradiation in liquid” technique to liberate the inaccessible highly dispersed Co  N x active sites confined inside N-doped carbon nanotubes is demonstrated. The liberated Co  N x sites possess generic catalytic activities toward selective hydrogenation of quinoline and its hydroxyl, methyl, and halogen substituted derivatives into corresponding 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines with almost 100% conversion efficiency and selectivity. This laser irradiation treatment approach should be widely applicable to unlock the catalytic powers of inaccessible catalytic active sites confined by other materials.

Fabrication of one dimensional CNTs/Fe3O4@PPy/Pd magnetic composites for the accumulation and electrochemical detection of triclosan

Jing Zheng,Min Zhang,Yang Ling,Jingli Xu,Shunzhong Hu,Tasawar Hayat,Njud S. Alharbi,Fan Yang

In this paper, multifunctional nanotubes were prepared by directly combing iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticle(NPs) decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and palladium (Pd) NPs together with polypyrrole (PPy) in a facile way. Firstly, magnetic CNT composite (CNTs/Fe 3 O 4 ) was synthesized by the high temperature decomposition process, then PPy could be easily immobilized on the magnetic CNTs. Furthermore, Pd NPs were accumulated on the surface of CNTs/Fe 3 O 4 @PPy to obtain one dimensional CNTs/Fe 3 O 4 @PPy/Pd composite. The composite extraordinary amplified the electrochemical response, providing a highly sensitive electrochemical platform for triclosan detection. This electrochemical sensors had the advantage of fast response, cheap instrument, low cost, simple operation, high sensitivity and real-time detection in situ condition. Moreover, the sensor exhibited a wide linear response range for triclosan (2.247 × 10 −9  M to 2.752 × 10 −7  M) with a detection limit of 1.417 × 10 −9  M, respectively. In addition, the electrochemical sensor reported herein was applied for the detection of triclosan in real samples, revealing promising applications in developing the sensor for environmental inspection and monitoring.

Effective conversion of heteroatomic model compounds in microalgae-based bio-oils to hydrocarbons over β-Mo2C/CNTs catalyst

Junmei Liang,Ranran Ding,Yulong Wu,Yu Chen,Kejing Wu,Yongqiang Meng,Mingde Yang,Yaowu Wang

Hydrotreatment of heteroatomic model compounds in microalgae-based bio-oils into diesel-like hydrocarbons was carried out over carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-supported β-Mo 2 C catalyst with superior activity and selectivity under a mild condition (≤200   °C). The results show that stearic acid and hexadecanamide can be completely converted into n -C 15 –C 18 alkanes over β-Mo 2 C/CNTs catalyst. The β-Mo 2 C/CNTs favors the pathway of hydrogenation–dehydration–hydrogenation to produce n -octadecane with an optimal yield of 91.24% at a lower temperature of 180   °C during hydrotreating process of stearic acid. The recycle tests demonstrate that the β-Mo 2 C/CNTs exhibits excellent stability, and can be reused for seven times consecutively without reduction of catalytic stability. Based on the determined products, a brief reaction pathway is proposed. Therefore, a novel approach to produce diesel-like hydrocarbons via catalytic hydrotreatment of microalgae-based bio-oils over β-Mo 2 C/CNTs is introduced, which provides a basic research as well as technical parameters for its further industrialization.

Roles of nitrogen species on nitrogen-doped CNTs supported Cu-ZrO2 system for carbon dioxide hydrogenation to methanol

Yuhai Sun,Limin Chen,Yunfeng Bao,Guannan Wang,Yujun Zhang,Mingli Fu,Junliang Wu,Daiqi Ye

Cu-ZrO 2 catalysts supported on nitrogen-doped CNTs were tested for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol in a fixed-bed plug flow reactor. The characterization results indicate that the presence of pyridinic nitrogen increases the copper oxide dispersion, promotes their reduction, decreases the Cu particle size and enhances H 2 adsorption capability; the activated CO 2 adsorption predominantly controls CO 2 conversion. In addition, pyridinic nitrogen contributes to the strong adsorption of CO 2 , stimulating methanol formation, while pyrrolic nitrogen contributes to the medium adsorption of CO 2 , mainly boosting CO formation. Thus, pyridinic nitrogen dominant CNTs supported catalyst (CZ/CNT-N) possesses more active sites compared with the other three catalysts, leading to maximum methanol yield (8.64%) and space time yield (102.21   mg   g −1 cat   h −1 ); pyrrolic nitrogen dominant CNTs supported catalyst (CZ/CNT-NH 2 ) obtains more highly active structure, giving the highest intrinsic activity (TOF values).
