A combination of the differential Raman spectrometrics and contact-angle measurements has enabled resolution of the hydrogen bond (HB, O:H O) relaxation and molecular dynamics in the NaX hydration shells. Observations suggest that the aqueous ions create each an electric field to form the hydration shells through O:H O bond elongation and polarization. The ionic polarization shares the same, and even stronger, effect of molecular undercoordination that shortens the H O bond and stiffen its phonon , and meanwhile, the O O Coulomb repulsivity lengthen and soften the O:H nonbond with an association of polarization. O:H O bond electrification raises not only the structure order of molecules and the viscosity in the hydration shells but also the skin stress and thermal stability of the solution. Exercises not only deepen our insight into the salt solute-solvent interaction involved in the Hofmeister series in terms of O:H O bond electrification but also provide a powerful means quantifying the dynamic, local, molecular-site-resolved information regarding the O:H O bond cooperativity in aqueous solutions.

Abstract A series of neutral luminescent tetranuclear and mononuclear copper(I) halide complexes, [Cu 4 I 4 (dpna) 4 ] ( 1 ) and [CuX(dpna) 2 ] dpna = 1-(diphenylphosphino)naphthalene, X = Br ( 2 ), Cl ( 3 ), were synthesized, and their molecular structures and photophysical properties were investigated. Complex 1 has a cubane-like structure with four Cu atoms pseudo -tetrahedral and four I atoms serving as μ 3 -bridges. The coordination geometry of the copper centers in 2–3 are trigonal-planar. In the solid state, complexes 1–3 display blue photoluminescence (λ max = 423–463 nm) at 298 K. The emission of the complexes originate from the (σ+X)→π* transition. All three complexes displayed good thermal stability. Graphical Abstract

The topographical features and material composition of scaffolds have a powerful influence on cell behaviors such as proliferation and differentiation. Here, scaffolds consisting of aligned fibers with incorporated bioactive collagen I were tested for their ability to enhance osteogenesis in vitro. Rat adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) were seeded on the scaffolds and their morphology, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation were examined. Aligned scaffolds with collagen I showed the best osteogenic properties. Also, adhesion-related genes showed the higher expression on aligned scaffolds with collagen I. Our findings indicate that fiber alignment combined with incorporation of collagen I increases the capacity of electrospun scaffolds to induce enhanced and directed osteogenesis. Such scaffolds may, therefore, have potential for improving guided oral bone regeneration.

Recently, antimicrobial surface coatings have emerged as an effective strategy to mitigate microbial contamination and disease transmission. The application of cuprous (I) oxide (Cu 2 O) and copper (II) pyrithione (CPT) in antimicrobial surfaces faces several challenges such as deep color, weak stability, limited functionality, and poor dispersion in coatings. These challenges complicate the design of novel copper-based antimicrobial agents. In this study, high-purity CPT was synthesized innovatively using Cu 2 O as a copper source, differing from traditional methods. Following this approach, diatomaceous earth/cuprous oxide/copper pyrithione (DME/Cu 2 O/CPT) composites with enhanced antimicrobial activity and a lighter color than Cu 2 O and CPT were prepared by adjusting the SPT dosage. Notably, in DME/Cu 2 O/CPT composites, Cu 2 O existed as nanoscale fragments adhering to the surfaces of CPT. Furthermore, coatings made from composites and latex paint exhibited a lighter color difference, higher stability, and exceptional antimicrobial activity against pathogens such as S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, C. albicans, and human enterovirus 71. The DME/Cu 2 O/CPT composites displayed high, stable, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy, attributing to the synergistic enhancement effects of released Cu + and Cu 2+ . Consequently, this study introduced a simple and scalable method for preparing DME/Cu 2 O/CPT composites, serving as a coating additive with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and long-term stability for various solid surfaces.

Reductive etherification of carbonyl compounds using metal–acid bifunctional catalysts is an important strategy for the synthesis of ethers. Conventional metal–acid bifunctional catalysts suffer from poor synergistic effects due to the spatially separated distribution of hydrogenation sites on metal nanoparticles and acid sites on supports. In this study, bifunctional Ni-I catalysts with intimate metal–acid bifunctional sites were prepared through the surface modification of Ni nanoparticles with organic iodide under H 2 atmosphere. Hydrogenolysis of C-I bonds over Ni nanoparticles promotes the selective deposition of I atoms on the Ni surface. Electronegative I atoms withdraw electrons from Ni nanoparticles, which enables the heterolytic dissociation of H 2 over Ni-I polar sites, leading to the in-situ generation of Ni(H - )-I(H + ) bifunctional sites on the metal surface. The reductive etherification of furfural and ethanol over Ni-I bifunctional catalysts demonstrated high efficiency with an 89.4 % yield to furfuryl ethyl ether (FEE) at mild reaction conditions. Mechanistic studies revealed that both the selective deactivation effect and the in-situ generation of Brønsted acidity contribute to this reaction pathway. While the I atoms selectively deactivate the consecutive Ni sites, suppressing the over-hydrogenation of the furan ring, the in-situ generated Brønsted acid sites catalyze the acetalization. Furthermore, temperature-programmed pyridine FTIR analysis revealed that the Brønsted acidity on the Ni-I catalyst is only evident at high temperatures (e.g., over 100°C) due to the high dissociation energy required for H 2 on non-noble metal surfaces. The developed Ni-I bifunctional catalysts, featuring intimate metal–acid sites and low-cost, holds great promise for the catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived oxygenates into fine chemicals.

Chiral hybrid metal halides with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and superior dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) are promising candidates for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitting sources. However, it is a great challenge to achieve both high g lum and large PLQY. Here, we report a new supramolecular strategy to fabricate chiral hybrid Cu(I)-halides with near-unity quantum yields and intense CPL emissions. The dissymmetry factor can be dramatically modulated by tuning the host-guest complexations. Attributing to the chirality and variable conformations of the host-guest complexes, a series of chiral [G@L R/S ] 2 Cu 4 I 6 have been prepared. The incorporation of different cations within the chiral L R/S hosts leads to variations of packing modes along the c -axis and different extent of distortions in the [Cu 4 I 6 ] 2− polyhedra. Among them, [H 3 O@L R/S ] + cations are stacked based on Van der Waals interactions and hierarchically self-assemble into a right/left-handed helix in [H 3 O@L R/S ] 2 Cu 4 I 6 , which results in a high g lum of −7×10 −3 and a large PLQY of 96.92%. Notably, [G@L R/S ] 2 Cu 4 I 6 shows promising applications in single-component white light emitting diodes (WLEDs), exhibiting a maximum dissymmetry factor of −1.2×10 −3 . The effective host-guest complexation and oriented hierarchical self-assembly provide an effective strategy for the development of high-performance CPL materials.

Type-I photodynamic therapy (PDT), valued for its reduced oxygen requirement, generates highly cytotoxic •OH radicals. However, conventional strategies for developing type-I photosensitizers (PSs) are complex and involve intricate organic synthesis. Herein, we present a novel strategy to alter the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by simply manipulating the twisting degree of donor–acceptor (D−A) type aggregation-induced emission (AIE) PSs. Specifically, natural saturated fatty acids are employed to modulate the twisting state of AIE PSs, with higher doping ratios yielding more twisted structures and increased type-I ROS generation. In contrast, fatty acids with higher crystallinity promote planar structures and type-II ROS generation. Theoretical calculations suggest that AIE PSs with highly twisted structures lead to a prominent reduction in Δ E ST and effective separation of electron−hole pairs, thereby favoring efficient intersystem crossing and charge transfer. The PDT system primarily driven by type-I ROS exhibits efficient bactericidal activity against clinically drug-resistant bacteria, which remarkably accelerates the recovery of bacteria-infected wounds in mice. This study demonstrates the first example of modulating ROS generation type by manipulating the twisting degree of D−A type AIE PSs, eliminating the need for intricate molecular design and organic synthesis. The proposed strategy opens up new avenues for advancing PDT applications.

In this work, a simple, highly selective and sensitive method for detecting biothiols based on I − -H 2 O 2 -3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) system is developed. The main determination mechanism of the colorimetric assay is that iodide could catalyze the oxidation of TMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 to form oxidized TMB (ox-TMB). With the introduction of biothiols, the biothiols cause the reduction of ox-TMB, accompanied with the color of the solution changing from the original blue to colorlessness. UV–vis absorption spectrum shows that the intensity of peak at 652 nm reduces largely. Other 20 kinds of amino acids have also been studied for proving the high sensitivity and selectivity of current approach. This colorimetric analysis method can be successfully applied to the practical sample determination with satisfactory results. The results indicated that this work is a facile, time-saving and cost-effective method for detecting biothiols.

The interaction of disinfectants with bromide/iodide ions and natural organic matter (NOM) generates brominated/iodinated disinfection byproducts (Br/I-DBPs), known for their heightened cytotoxicity and genotoxicity relative to chlorinated DBPs. This study investigated Br/I-DBP formation during sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) disinfection of lignin-containing synthetic water by quantifying adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) and trihalomethanes (THMs). Disinfection of bromide-containing water yielded a bromide ion (Br−) to adsorbable organic bromine (AOBr) conversion rate of approximately 60%, with bromine within THMs accounting for about 30% of the total AOBr, indicating significant brominated DBP formation where THMs represent a major fraction. Conversely, iodide ion (I−) conversion to adsorbable organic iodine (AOI) is minimal, suggesting negligible iodinated DBP formation under NaClO disinfection. Examination of key parameters revealed that brominated THM (Br-THM) formation decreased with increasing lignin concentration, while iodinated THM (I-THM) formation increased. The effect of chlorine dose differed: Br-THM formation exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease at higher doses, whereas I-THM formation consistently decreased. Both Br-THM and I-THM formation increased with higher bromide or iodide ion concentration and with increasing pH. These results highlight the distinct pathways and influencing factors governing brominated versus iodinated DBP formation in lignin-containing waters disinfected with hypochlorite.

Background Cardiac hypertrophy, characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle, arises from factors such as hypertension and genetic mutations, often leading to adverse outcomes like heart failure and arrhythmias. Guanxinning tablets (GXNT), a botanical drug composed of the blood-activating herbs Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge. and Ligusticum striatum DC., are widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, the active ingredients and their molecular mechanisms are yet to be fully understood. Methods We evaluated the anti-hypertrophic effects of GXNT and screened its active substances via cardiac function live-imaging on an aristolochic acid A-stimulated zebrafish cardiac hypertrophy model, and through F-actin immunostaining on a phenylephrine-induced hypertrophic NRCMs model. Additionally, the protective effects of GXNT’s active substances were analyzed in a mouse model of cardiac hypertrophy using echocardiography, histopathology analysis, and western blotting. Results The anti-hypertrophic effects of GXNT were assessed using an aristolochic acid A-stimulated zebrafish model and phenylephrine-induced hypertrophic NRCMs. GXNT demonstrated significant anti-hypertrophic effects in both models. Phenotypic screening identified Senkyunolide I (Sen I) from Ligusticum striatum as the active component in the zebrafish model, while Salvianolic acid B (Sal B) and Rosmarinic acid from Salvia miltiorrhiza emerged as the key anti-hypertrophic compound in NRCMs. In a mouse model of isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy, Sal B and Sen I showed synergistic effects, improving cardiac function, reducing oxidative stress, and suppressing inflammation. Mechanistically, transcriptomic sequencing highlighted cooperative modulation of MAP3K1 signaling by the two compounds. Notably, siRNA-mediated knockdown of MAP3K1 in cardiomyocytes attenuated the hypertrophic phenotype, supporting its essential role in the pathological process. Molecular docking and dynamic simulations further supported their binding potential to MAP3K1. Conclusion These findings underscore GXNT’s potent anti-hypertrophic effects, possibly driven by the synergistic actions of Sal B and Sen I, and offer insights into its therapeutic potential through MAP3K1 signaling regulation.

Maintaining innate immune homeostasis is critical for preventing infections and autoimmune diseases but effective interventions are lacking. Here we identified C864–C869-mediated intermolecular disulfide-linkage formation as a critical step for human RIG-I activation that can be bidirectionally regulated to control innate immune homeostasis. The viral-stimulated C864–C869 disulfide linkage mediates conjugation of an SDS-resistant RIG-I oligomer, which prevents RIG-I degradation by E3 ubiquitin-ligase MIB2 and is necessary for RIG-I to perform liquid–liquid phase separation to compartmentalize downstream signalsome, thereby stimulating type I interferon signalling. The corresponding C865S ‘knock-in’ caused an oligomerization defect and liquid–liquid phase separation in mouse RIG-I, which inhibited innate immunity, resulting in increased viral load and mortality in mice. Using unnatural amino acids to generate covalent C864–C869 linkage and the development of an interfering peptide to block C864–C869 residues, we bidirectionally regulated RIG-I activities in human diseases. These findings provide in-depth insights on mechanism of RIG-I activation, allowing for the development of methodologies that hold promising implications in clinics.

Lithium argyrodites are one of the most promising sulfide electrolytes due to their high ionic conductivity and ductile feature. Among them, Li 6 PS 5 I (LPSI) exhibits better stability against Li metal but a rather low ionic conductivity (only ≈10 −6 S cm −1 ) because of the absence of S 2− /I − disorder. Herein, argyrodite Li 6− x PS 5− x I 1+ x glass–ceramic electrolytes with high iodine content are synthesized using ultimate-energy mechanical alloying method. S 2− /I − disorder is successfully introduced into the system by doping LiI during this one-pot process. Determined by 6 Li magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the introduction of iodine promotes Li + inter-cage jumps, leading to an enhanced long-range Li + conducting. The Li 5.6 PS 4.6 I 1.4 glass–ceramic electrolyte (LPSI 1.4 -gc) possesses high ionic conductivity (2.04 mS cm −1 ) and excellent stability against Li metal. The Li symmetric cell with the LPSI 1.4 -gc electrolyte demonstrates ultralong cycling stability over 3200 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 . LiCoO 2 /Li 6 PS 5 Cl/Li all-solid-state battery applying LPSI 1.4 -gc as the anode interlayer also presents prominent cycling and rate performance. This work provides a novel type of electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and stability against Li metal.
