Three-in-one: Saturated, UV-protective and anti-bacterial structural colored textiles

Lan-Xing Gao,An Tang,Wei-Long Bi,Zhijie Zhu,Yu Tian

Structural color based textiles have attracted significant attention owing to their potential in facilitating environmentally-friendly and durable coloration processes. However, the improvement of color saturation in textiles based on structural color is still under continuous investigation. Additionally, there is a rising demand for textiles featuring specialized functionalities such as anti-bacteria and anti-ultraviolet properties in daily life. In this study, a “three-in-one” amorphous photonic structure (APS) and multi-functional textile design is performed to achieve high structural color saturation, UV protection, and anti-bacteria properties. In this system, poly(styrene-butyl acrylate-methacrylate) (P(St-BA-MAA)) colloidal particles are used as building blocks, black titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is used as black dopant , and water-soluble polyurethane (WPU) is used as the binder. The WPU demonstrates a significant capability to enhance the color fastness of APS/TiO 2 textiles. The strong absorption of incoherent scattered light by black TiO 2 in the visible range plays a crucial role in achieving a highly saturated APS-based textile. In addition, the doped black TiO 2 possesses strong UV–visible light absorption and anti-bacterial capabilities, thereby supporting the development of textiles functionalized with UV protection and anti-bacteria. Our proposed simplified approach to fabricating high color saturation and functionalized APS/TiO 2 textiles demonstrates significant potential for eco-textile coloring in line with market demands.

UV-curable, 3D printable, thermally conductive polysiloxane composites for thermal interface devices

Hao Jin,Xingxing Zhong,Chucheng Zhong,Wensheng Dai,Hongping Xiang,Lanyue Zhang

Thermally conductive polysiloxane composites play an important role in 5 G electronics to efficiently dissipate accumulated heat. However, these polysiloxane composites are still challenged by long curing time, high energy consumption and huge amounts of waste from traditional subtractive manufacturing processes. In this work, UV-curable, 3D printable, thermally conductive polysiloxane composites are developed using mercaptopropyl-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-SH) and 2,4,6,8-tetravinyl-2,4,6,8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (V 4 ) as matrix, and different sized spherical Al 2 O 3 and BN particles as thermally conductive fillers. Using V 4 instead of the common vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-Vi) can greatly reduce the viscosity to fill more fillers (6 wt% BN and 76 wt% Al 2 O 3 ) for higher thermal conductivity (2.02 ± 0.02 W/mK). The rational combination of larger particle size BN (200 μm) with different sizes of Al 2 O 3 (5 and 90 μm) has a fast gelation behavior (within 5 s) and low critical exposure energy (3 mJ/cm 2 ). Furthermore, the composites developed can be 3D printed into thermally conductive devices with complex 3D structures, and the 3D objects show outstanding heat conduction and dissipation capabilities. Therefore, these UV-curable, 3D printable, thermally conductive polysiloxane composites will be used in 3D thermal interfacial objects with high production efficiency, low energy consumption and customization.

UV-Triggered Hydrogel Coating of the Double Network Polyelectrolytes for Enhanced Endothelialization

Xing-wang Wang,Yi-jing Yin,Jing Wang,Hong-mei Yu,Qian Tang,Zhao-yang Chen,Guo-sheng Fu,Ke-feng Ren,Jian Ji,Lu Yu

The left atrial appendage (LAA) occluder is an important medical device for closing the LAA and preventing stroke. The device-related thrombus (DRT) prevents the implantation of the occluder in exerting the desired therapeutic effect, which is primarily caused by the delayed endothelialization of the occluder. Functional coatings are an effective strategy for accelerating the endothelialization of occluders. However, the occluder surface area is particularly large and structurally complex, and the device is subjected to a large shear friction in the sheath during implantation, which poses a significant challenge to the coating. Herein, a hydrogel coating by the in situ UV-triggered polymerization of double-network polyelectrolytes is reported. The findings reveal that the double network and electrostatic interactions between the networks resulted in excellent mechanical properties of the hydrogel coating. The sulfonate and Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) groups in the coating promoted hemocompatibility and endothelial growth of the occluder, respectively. The coating significantly accelerated the endothelialization of the LAA occluder in a canine model is further demonstrated. This study has potential clinical benefits in reducing both the incidence of DRT and the postoperative anticoagulant course for LAA closure.

Versatile Underwater Pressure Sensitive Adhesive: UV Curing Synthesis and Substrate-Independent Adhesion

Xianqiang Zeng,Chen Liu,Xue Wang,Yan Cao,Peng He,Huiquan Li,Liguo Wang

The demand for underwater pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is rapidly increasing in fields such as underwater engineering and biomedicine. However, the achievement of underwater adhesion of PSAs remains a challenge because of the hydration layer that hinders the interaction between the adhesive and the substrate. Herein, a new type of underwater PSA was synthesized by the copolymerization of hydrophobic unsaturated poly(1,2-butylene oxide) (UPBO) and hydrophilic itaconic acid monomers using solvent-free ultraviolet curing. The PSA has demonstrated substrate-independent underwater adhesion strengths ranging from 108 to 141 kPa on both hydrophilic (glass, wood, steel) and hydrophobic (PET, PMMA, PTFE) substrates. The underwater adhesion performance of PSA remains stable during 30 adhesion–detachment cycles and incubation in water for 20 days. Notably, PSA shows cytocompatibility, antimicrobial, and degradable properties and can be used for rapid hemostasis of skin wounds. Experimental characterizations confirm that the process of underwater adhesion is achieved by hydrophobic alkyl side chains of the PBO chain segments, which repel water at the adhesive–substrate interface. This study should provide both practical and facile design strategies for multifunctional underwater PSAs that can be used in a variety of applications.

Synthesis of quaternary high entropy carbonate and UV-Vis-NIR optical properties

Yang Duo,Wang Jing,Shi Jun,Ren Jie

In this study, four-element high entropy carbonate solid solutions with Mg as the primary element and three equimolar transition metal elements (Co, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu) were successfully prepared using the hydrothermal method. The crystal structure, microstructure, color properties, and reflectance of the synthetic materials were characterized using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectrophotometry. The results indicate that the existence of Cu impacts the formation of solid solution phase, especially in combination with Fe, leading to the formation of a heterophase. By changing the combination of elements, the band gap of the high-entropy carbonate was adjusted from 2.09 eV to 5.56 eV. The colorimetric coordinates, according to CIE 1976 Lab, ranged from L 34.54 ∼ 89.80, a * -22.06 ∼ 5.41, and b * -1.75 ∼ 39.38, allowing for coverage from blue to red tones. The coexistence of Cu and Fe resulted in a deep reddish-brown color, which is likely related to charge transfer transitions. Additionally, different combinations of high-entropy carbonates showed significant differences in near-infrared reflectance, reaching up to 83% in the 780 nm to 2500 nm band range, indicating potential applications in high-reflective insulation materials.

UV-curable waterborne polyurethane acrylate coatings prepared from bio-based alkyd polyols

Duan Yuan,Li Jing-Yi,Ding Yong-Bo,Qiao Yong-Luo,Shen Liang,Li Xin-Gui

In this paper, four kinds of bio-based alkyd polyols were prepared from bio-based oleic acid and coconut oleic acid as raw materials. Subsequently, UV-curable waterborne polyurethane acrylate dispersions (UV-WPUAs) were synthesized using the four bio-based alkyd polyols, respectively. Furthermore, these UV-WPUAs were employed to prepare UV-curable waterborne polyurethane acrylate coatings (UV-WPUA coatings). The study focused on comparing the effects of the four bio-based alkyd polyols on the performance of the UV-WPUAs and the resulting UV-WPUA coatings. The results showed that all the UV-WPUAs prepared from the above four bio-based alkyd polyols exhibited semitransparent, low viscosity, small particle size and high zeta potential. Additionally, the UV-WPUA-2 (alkyd polyol was prepared from oleic acid, hexahydrophthalic anhydride, neopentyl glycol and trimethylolpropane) coating exhibited excellent coating properties, such as excellent physical properties, chemical resistance and acceptable yellowing resistance. This phenomenon can be attributed to the higher crosslinking density of the UV-WPUA-2 coating, along with the lack of a benzene ring structure that is typically associated with yellowing. In conclusion, the result of this study confirms that bio-based alkyd polyols are suitable for preparing UV-curable waterborne polyurethane acrylate.

Preparation and properties of a UV-curable coating containing rare earth CeO2

Yihua Sun,Guoyao Li,Rong Zhong

A UV-curable coating with UV and blue light protection was prepared by incorporating modified rare earth nano cerium dioxide (CeO2) treated with the silane coupling agent KH570. The structures of the modified CeO2 and the resulting UV-curable coating were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. UV spectral analysis was conducted to evaluate the UV shielding performance of the coating. The results demonstrated that the nano-CeO2 was uniformly distributed within the polymer matrix of the cured coating. The coating exhibited UV shielding capabilities ranging from 58% to 98% in the UVB region (280–315 nm), as well as effective protection against blue light (400–450 nm), and the visible light transmittance is maintained at about 90%. The UV-cured coating also displayed excellent mechanical properties, indicating its potential application in electronic products.

High-strength and debondable UV-curable adhesive based on dual-dynamic network

Kunpeng Zheng,Juntao Wang,Junyi Chen,Jingye Hao,Zetong Liu,Suli Xing,Jinshui Yang,Dingding Chen

The temporary fixation of precision devices during manufacturing demands adhesives capable of high efficiency and controlled debonding, while existing thermosetting adhesives face challenges in on-demand debonding due to irreversible covalent crosslinking. To address this dilemma, UV-curable polyurethane acrylate adhesive (DSPUA) integrating dual-dynamic networks of hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds was developed. This synergy between dynamic networks effectively resolved the trade-off between adhesive strength and on-demand debonding capability. The dual-dynamic network provided strong and tough adhesive strength (5.88 MPa and 8.99 kN/m), surpasing that of existing UV-curable adhesives featuring controlled debonding. The disulfide bonds enabled rapid debonding at medium temperatures (complete detachment within 4 min at 90 °C). In addition, the DSPUA-2 adhesive also experienced a significant reduction in adhesive strength when exposed to ultraviolet light or in the presence of chemical reducing agents. This work paves the way for the design of high-performance and debondable adhesives, with significant implications for temporary fixation of precision components and material recycling.

(NH4)3B11PO19F3: a deep-UV nonlinear optical crystal with unique [B5PO10F]∞ layers

Cheng Bingliang,Li Zijian,Chu Yu,Tudi Abudukadi,Mutailipu Miriding,Zhang Fangfang,Yang Zhihua,Pan Shilie

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that can extend the output range of coherent light below 200 nm are pivotal materials for solid-state lasers. To date, KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) is the only usable crystal that can generate DUV coherent light by direct second harmonic generation (SHG), but the layered growth habit and toxic ingredients limit its application. Herein, we report a new fluoroborophosphate, (NH4)3B11PO19F3 (ABPF), containing four different functional units: [BO3], [BO4], [BO3F] and [PO4]. ABPF exhibits a KBBF-like structure while eliminating the limitations of KBBF crystal. The unique [B5PO10F]∞ layers enhance ABPF’s performance; for example, it has a large SHG response (1.2 × KDP) and a sufficient birefringence (0.088 at 1064 nm) that enables the shortest phase-matching wavelength to reach the DUV region. Meanwhile, the introduction of strong B-O-P covalent bonds decreases the layered growth habit. These findings will enrich the structural chemistry of fluoroborophosphate and contribute to the discovery of more excellent DUV NLO crystals.

Ultra-Long 1D Double Perovskite CsAg0.4Cu1.6I3 Single Crystal for UV Imaging Memory

Fa Cao,Ying Liu,Enliu Hong,Ruofei Xing,Wushuang Han,Sancan Han,Bin Sun

Emerging copper-based lead-free perovskites have garnered significant attention for ultraviolet (UV) photodetection due to their atmospheric stability and optoelectronic properties. However, their practical applications are hindered by low carrier density and limited device performance. In this work, a breakthrough is reported in synthesizing ultra-long 1D double perovskite CsAg x Cu 2-x I 3 (0≤x≤2) single crystals (SCs) via an anti-solvent recrystallization method. The SCs achieve unprecedented lengths of 2.2 cm for CsAg 0.4 Cu 1.6 I 3 and 3 cm for CsAg 2 I 3 (CAI123), setting new benchmarks for Cu/Ag-based perovskites. By tuning the Ag-doping ratio, the bandgap is continuously modulated from 3.60 to 3.24 eV, enabling tailored optoelectronic responses. The optimized CsAg 0.4 Cu 1.6 I 3 -based photodetector exhibits exceptional performance at 360 nm, with a peak responsivity of 82.5 mA W −1 and a high detectivity of 1.3 × 10 12 Jones (@ 3V; light intensity: 2.8 mW cm −2 ), superior than CsCu 2 I 3 (20.7 mA W −1 ) and CAI123 (15.8 mA W −1 ). Notably, the detector array demonstrates pioneering UV imaging memory capabilities, retaining patterns for over 10 s via slow carrier release from self-trapped and defect-related states. This work not only advances the synthesis of eco-friendly perovskites but also unlocks novel functionalities for next-generation optoelectronics in UV sensing, imaging, and memory devices.

Realizing UV driven microalgae photosynthesis to bio-fix CO2 by spectrum conversion

Jiale Wang,Shiyan Ma,Yun Huang,Ao Xia,Xianqing Zhu,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao

Microalgae, as efficient photosynthetic autotrophs, hold significant potential for carbon sequestration. However, their photosynthesis is constrained by the selective use of the solar spectrum. To enhance the utilization of natural light energy, a dual functional substrate with ultraviolet (UV) light conversion and microalgae biofilm support was proposed by coating a rare earth complexes phosphor agent onto transparent acrylic in this study. By doing this, UV light could directly drive microalgae biofilm photosynthesis by converting it to red light, resulting in a maximum 2.81 times increase in the carbon fixation rate. The UV conversion substrate increased the electron transport rate of microalgal photosystem II by 58.08%, effectively enhancing the photosynthetic rate and oxygen release, promoting the formation of a porous biofilm structure, and strengthening the material transfer within the biofilm. Additionally, reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause oxidative stress, affecting cell growth and metabolic activity. With the use of the UV conversion substrate, the levels of ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) in microalgae decreased by 84.56% and 42.35%, respectively. Consequently, UV-induced damage to microalgae cells was reduced, leading to a 52.52% increase in the photosynthesis rate and achieving UV driven photosynthetic carbon sequestration. This study demonstrated the UV conversion substrate’s effectiveness in reducing UV-induced damage in microalgae and enhancing photosystem activity, showing significant potential for carbon fixation within microalgal biofilms.

Robust, intelligent photochromic cotton fabrics with superamphiphobicity and expedient UV detection ability

Xinrui Fang,Zhong Zhang,Qing Wang,Yuxin Xu,Haitao Niu,Hua Zhou

Multifunctional photochromic cotton fabrics have enormous application potential in our daily lives, but still suffer from poor durability, slow coloration, tedious fabrication process, and short service life. The hydrophilic and polysaccharide characteristics of cotton fabrics make them vulnerable to bacteria adhesion and proliferation. Herein, intelligent photochromic cotton fabrics featured with durable superamphiphobicity are fabricated by in situ growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles encapsulating spirooxazine (SP) photochromic dyes on the fabric surface, followed by low surface energy treatment using a fluorocarbon resin (FR) via a dip-coating method. The resultant SP@ZIF-8/FR cotton fabrics exhibit superamphiphobicity with contact angles of over 150° to both water and oils (surface tension ≥30 mN/m). When exposed to UV light, the fabric rapidly changes its color from white to blue within 10 s and fades in 2 min under visible room light. The developed SP@ZIF-8/FR coating is durable against numerous damages in daily usage, such as machine laundry, abrasion and UV irradiation, without losing photochromic and superamphiphobic properties. The high durability and excellent reversible color response allow the coated fabric to intuitively and quantitatively monitor outdoor UV intensity. Owing to the presence of ZIF-8, the treated fabrics also show excellent antibacterial property with antibacterial rates of over 99 % against both E. coli and S. aureus . The developed fabric coating can be engineered to visually assess the UV intensity in the outdoor environment.
