This study focuses on an improved synthesis of a branched poly (ethylene imine) (PEI)-modified cellulose-based adsorbent (Cell- g -PGMA-PEI). We aim to improve the adsorbent capacity by reducing side reaction of epoxide ring opening during graft copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto cellulose which increases the content of epoxy groups, anchors to immobilize branched PEI moieties. FTIR spectra provided the evidence of successful graft copolymerization of GMA onto cellulose initiated by benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and modification with PEI. The amount of epoxy groups of Cell- g -PGMA was 4.35 mmol g −1 by epoxy titration. Subsequently, the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) on cell- g -PGMA-PEI in aqueous solution has been investigated. The data from the adsorption kinetic experiments agreed well with pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherms can be interpreted by the Langmuir model with the maximum adsorption capacity of 102 mg g −1 which was largely improved compared with the similar adsorbent reported. The dynamic adsorption capacity obtained from the column tests was 119 mg g −1 and the adsorbent could be regenerated by HCl of 0.1 mol L −1 . Results indicate that the novel pathway for the synthesis of Cell- g -PGMA-PEI exhibits significant potential to improve the performance of adsorbents in removal and recovery of Cu(II) from aqueous solution. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To overcome the critical limitations of poor spatiotemporal coordination and inefficient energy delivery in photodynamic-thermodynamic (TDT-PDT) tumor therapy, we propose a free radical spatiotemporal-matching strategy to enhance therapeutic synergy. An optimized photoelectric therapy needle (PTN) and indocyanine green (ICG)-Cu(II)-AIBI infinite coordination polymer nanoparticles (ICP NPs) were rationally engineered to implement this strategy. The PTN enables precise codelivery of laser irradiation and electric current to the tumor core, achieving spatial overlap of photodynamic and electrothermal activation and free radical generation. The ICP NPs exhibit a high dual-drug loading (85.2%) and pH-responsive release, promoting tumor-selective accumulation and activation. This strategy ensures both spatial overlap and temporal alignment of singlet oxygen and alkyl radical production, maximizing oxidative damage. The ICP NPs display a high maximum tolerated dose (352.10 mg kg–1), markedly reducing systemic toxicity. In vitro, ICP NPs exhibit potent cytotoxicity against 4T1 cells (IC50 = 4.14 μg mL–1, combination index = 0.13), indicating strong synergism. In vivo, under low-energy stimulation and without chemotherapy, this strategy achieves complete tumor inhibition, a low recurrence rate (25% at 60 days), and negligible systemic toxicity. This work establishes a precise, low-toxicity paradigm for spatiotemporally matching dynamic therapy with strong translational potential.

Deep purification of heavy metals from complex aqueous matrices is a critical challenge in water remediation. In this study, a novel hierarchical adsorbent (RS-PSS/PEI-HTO) was developed by self-assembling poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and hydrated titanium oxide (HTO) onto rice straw. This ternary coating transformed the low-value biomass into a high-performance sequestration platform with enhanced structural integrity. System characterization (SEM-EDS, FTIR, and TGA) confirmed the successful formation of a stable interface with uniformly dispersed HTO nanoparticles mediated by the amine-rich PEI layer. Batch equilibrium studies revealed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir model with an exceptionally high affinity constant (K L = 31.16 L/mg), enabling the capture of trace Cu(II) to near-zero residual levels. The adsorption mechanism was driven by the synergistic interaction of the ternary components: electrostatic pre-enrichment by PSS, high-density amine chelation by PEI, and specific metal–oxygen coordination by HTO. The composite maintained high selectivity for Cu(II) despite a 20-fold molar excess of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . Fixed-bed column studies validated its efficacy, reaching a breakthrough point of 225 Bed Volumes (BV) while keeping effluent Cu(II) below 0.1 mg/L, a five-fold improvement over binary RS-HTO. The exhausted adsorbent was easily regenerated with HCl-NaCl, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. This research provides a sustainable "waste-to-wealth" paradigm for engineering high-affinity materials tailored for the deep purification of heavy-metal-contaminated wastewater. The effect of heavy metals on the properties and hydration of blast furnace slag–cement composites (BFS-CC) remain unclear. In this study, two BFS-CC (denoted as DBFS-CC and WBFS-CC) were prepared by dry and wet grinding of BFS, respectively. The effect of Cu(II) on BFS-CC’s properties and hydration was investigated by adding representative copper contaminants (CuO, CuCl 2 , and CuS) to the composites. Adding 1.0wt% CuO and 0.5wt% CuS increased the 3-d compressive strength of DBFS-CC by 14.9% and 5.7%, respectively, but suppressed the 3-d strength of WBFS-CC. This trend reversed at 28-d curing, where adding 1.5wt% CuO, 2.0wt% CuCl 2 , and 1.5wt% CuS enhanced the compressive strength of WBFS-CC by 23.4%, 6.2%, and 13.6%, respectively, but adversely affected the strength of DBFS-CC. For 28-d hydration, adding CuCl 2 decreased the hydration degree of DBFS-CC but enhanced that of WBFS-CC. Adding CuO promoted the hydration degree of both composites, while adding CuS exhibited inhibitory effects. DBFS-CC immobilized CuCl 2 better due to a higher hydration degree, while WBFS-CC immobilized CuO and CuS better due to having finer unhydrated BFS particles and a denser matrix. This study not only focuses on the Cu(II) immobilization effect but also reveals the differential effects of Cu(II) species on the hydration process, providing novel insights into heavy metal interactions in BFS-CC systems and their safe disposal.

The widely usage of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) arises environmental concerns on toxic metal mobilization, and challenges the conventional processes in water treatment. In the study Cu(II)-EDTA in near natural water was efficiently removed during a two-step electrocoagulation using Fe(0) anode (Fe-EC), including a transformation to Fe(III)-EDTA induced mainly by structural Fe(II) in anoxic Fe-EC and further degradation in oxic Fe-EC. The degradation of Fe(III)-EDTA was mostly attributed to an oxygen activation mechanism that involving O 2 − and hydroxyl radical ( OH) generation, as validated by the quenching experiments and electron spin resonance. Furthermore, O 2 − generated during Fe(II) oxidation took a dominant role on Fe(III)/Fe(II)-EDTA transformation instead of electrochemical reduction. Six intermediates during the Fe(III)-EDTA degradation were identified by LC-Q-TOF, indicating a pathway of stepwise breakage of N C bonds. The results revealed in this work is helpful to understand the contribution and fate of EDTA during Fe-EC treatment of metal-EDTA polluted water.

A proton-conductive complex based on decorated Keggin-type cluster, {[Cu(dmbipy)(H2O)3]2[SiW12O40]}·7H2O (where dmbipy is 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine) (1), was synthesized by reaction of CuSiW12O40·nH2O and dmbipy at room temperature. The product was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 293 K revealed that 1 crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c and has a 3-D supramolecular network with 1-D hydrophilic channels constructed by a decorated Keggin-type cluster, [Cu(dmbipy)(H2O)3]2SiW12O40, and solvent water molecules via hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thermogravimetric analysis suggests that 1 has high-thermal stability and good water binding in 1-D hydrophilic channels from 20 to 100 °C. Compound 1 exhibits good proton conductivities (over 10−3 S cm−1) at 100 °C in the relative humidity range 35–98%.

Realizing ideal deuterium separation from isotopic mixtures remains a daunting challenge because of their almost identical sizes, shapes, and physicochemical properties. Using the quantum sieving effect in porous materials with suitable pore size and open metal sites (OMSs) enables efficient hydrogen isotope separation. Herein, synthetic HKUST-1-derived microporous mixed-valence Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate), featuring a unique network of distinct Cu(I) and Cu(II) coordination sites, can remarkably boost the D2/H2 isotope separation, which has a high selectivity (SD2/H2) of 37.9 at 30 K, in comparison with HKUST-1 and other porous materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the introduction of Cu(I) macrocycles in the framework decreases the pore size and further leads to relatively enhanced interaction of H2/D2 molecules on Cu(II) sites. The significantly enhanced selectivity of Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC at 30 K can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of kinetic quantum sieving (KQS) and chemical affinity quantum sieving (CAQS). The results reveal that Cu(I) OMSs exhibit counterintuitive behaviors and play a crucial role in tuning quantum sieving without a complex structural design, which provides a deeper insight into quantum sieving mechanisms and a new strategy for the intelligent design of highly efficient isotope systems.

Efficient and convenient removal of organic dyes and heavy metals from complex wastewater is still a challenge for human health and ecosystem remediation. Novel adsorbent, Fe 3 O 4 @Carbon@ZIF-8 with specific core-shell structure was synthesized by layer-by-layer self-assembly. The hydrophilic carbonaceous shell acts as both a linker and stabilizer between Fe 3 O 4 and ZIF-8. The characteristics of self-made adsorbent were comprehensively identified by numerous characterization methods. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and the influence of various reacting parameters on its adsorption capacity of Congo red (CR) and Cu(II) were systematically investigated. Compared with other reported adsorbents, the maximum adsorption capacities of Fe 3 O 4 @Carbon@ZIF-8 towards CR (806.45 mg g −1 ) and Cu(II) (234.74 mg g −1 ) were much higher. Moreover, the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Selective adsorption of CR was investigated in the presence of cationic and anionic dyes, and the same as Cu(II) in the existence of competitive ions, which revealed that it was appropriate for selective adsorption toward CR and Cu(II) in complex wastewater. On the basis of FT-IR and XPS analyses, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, π-π bonding and ion exchange were involved in the mechanism of adsorption. Fe 3 O 4 @Carbon@ZIF-8 is suitable for practical application because of its good stability and reusability.

Chitosan-pectin gel beads (CPBs) were synthesized via a facile and green method and applied to remove heavy metals from aqueous solution. The structural characteristics of CPBs were investigated by SEM and FTIR, the mechanical strength of CPBs was measured by Texture Analyzer and the stability of CPBs was evaluated in acidic solution. To study the adsorption characteristics, the effect of pH, contact time, initial heavy metals concentration, temperature, adsorption mechanism and regeneration were systematically investigated. The adsorption kinetics fitted well pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms were well described by Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) were 169.4, 177.6, 208.5 and 266.5 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the CPBs exhibited a great reusability. Thus, the synthesized CPBs in this study had the potential to be utilized as an environment-friendly and green adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Nitrogen/phosphorus enriched biochars with enhanced porosity were prepared through a one-step pyrolysis of bamboo sawdust activated by guanidine phosphate (GP). The thermal decomposition of GP released alkaline gas and hydrogen proton to create more micropores in biochar matrix which were extended to be mesopores further. Nitrogenous/phosphorous moieties of GP were introduced into biochars efficiently via cross-linking with the carbon skeleton. GP-activated biochar pyrolyzed at 450 °C exhibited enriched surface functional groups (11.3 at.% for N, 4.1 at.% for P), resulting in high sorption capacities for aquatic Pb(II) (166.2 mg/g), Cu(II) (81.7 mg/g), and Cd(II) (60.3 mg/g). Pb(II) was passivated fast with the formation of minerals including Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH and Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl. Cu(II) was strongly coordinated with the N-containing species especially pyridinic N. Cd(II) was also captured efficiently due to the chemical complexation, cation exchange and cation-π bonds. GP-activated biochars could be well-recycling used to capture these heavy metals. Regarding these, the activation of biomass residuals could be an efficient approach to functionalize the surface of biochars with enhanced porosity, which is great benefiting for the immobilization of heavy metals from contaminated water.

Multiple spectroscopic technologies and chemometric analyses were combined to explore the compositional characteristics and Cu binding performance of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM). The DOM samples were extracted from biochars produced from lignocellulose-rich rapeseed cake (RSC) by pyrolysis at 300, 500, and 700 °C (i.e., RSC300, RSC500, RSC700). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and carbon K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) analyses were combined to elucidate the molecular-level C species in the DOM. With the increasing pyrolysis temperature, DOM aromaticity increased, whereas the proportion of metal complexing sites (e.g., carboxyl and phenolic groups) decreased. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) indicated that biochar DOM, irrespective of pyrolysis temperature, was mostly composed of three types of humic-like components (C1–C3), and a small amount of a protein-like component (C4). As charring temperature increased, DOM concentrations decreased substantially, but the humic-like C3 with abundant aromatic structures became predominant. Fluorescence quenching experiment and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis suggested that the preferential Cu(II) binding fractions of the DOM were the humic-like substances. Moreover, the quenching curve fitting results for individual components indicated that despite the Cu(II) binding affinity was slightly enhanced as the pyrolysis temperature increased, the binding capacities of the four components decreased. In general, the DOM components from RSC biochar exhibited limited Cu(II) binding capacities (2.18–17.7 μmol L −1 ). Results from this study improved understanding of the mechanisms by which biochar DOM interacts with Cu, and provided tools for fast screening of biochars to reduce their environmental risks.

Three novel Cu (II) coordination complexes, formulated as [Cu 3 (C 14 H 8 NO 3 F) 2 (CH 3 COO) 2 ] n ( 1 ), [Cu 2 (C 14 H 9 NO 3 F) 2 (CH 3 COO)Cl] ( 2 ) and [Cu(C 14 H 8 NO 3 F)(CH 3 OH) 2 ] ( 3 ), have been synthesized by 3-Fluoroanthranilic acid, Salicylaldehyde and Cu (II) salt as sources in different reaction conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed that the complexes exhibited different coordination modes and conformations which were linked into multidimensional networks through some weak interactions. The biological activities vary greatly on account of the different Cu (II) numbers among the three complexes. In order to discuss the bioactivities, the complexes have been screened for antimicrobial activities against E. coli and S. aureus , antitumor activities against A549 (human lung cancer cells), Hela (human cervical cancer cells) and HepG-2(human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cells). Their interactions with calf thymus DNA were investigated by UV–visible and fluorescence spectrometry, as well as viscosity measurements. Interestingly, 1 (the rare 3-core Cu (II) coordination polymer) shows great antibacterial activities and highest DNA binding affinities. Antitumor studies revealed that complex 1 also exhibited highest activity.
