Heteroatom doped carbon dots, due to their excellent fluorescence properties and potential applications in the biological and photo-electronic industry, have attracted great attention recently. In this work, we reported a single-step synthesis of nitrogen carbon dots (N-CDs) using a simple and straightforward hydrothermal method. The luminescence properties of the synthesized N-CDs were correlated with the precursor ratio (aniline and ethylenediamine ratio of (1 : 5) in CDs). To further investigate the fluorescence properties and related mechanisms of N-CDs, different characterization techniques were applied, including fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, the as-prepared N-CDs exhibit strong emission at 510 nm when excited at 410 nm, and emit bright green fluorescence under 365 nm UV radiation. N-CDs exhibited a strong selectivity for Hg2+ in the range of 0–70 μM, and can be used for the rapid detection of Hg2+ in biomedical applications. The sample of N-CDs as a probe was used for fluorescence bioimaging of zebrafish, validating the potential of N-CDs as a probe in bioimaging applications.

In the presence of Hg 2+ , a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system was constructed between CdSe quantum dots (QDs) (donor) and g-C 3 N 4 (receptors). Nanocomposites of g-C 3 N 4 supported by CdSe QDs (CdSe QDs/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets) were fabricated through an electrostatic interaction route in an aqueous solution. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets were decorated randomly by CdSe QDs, with average diameter of approximately 7 nm. The feasibility of the FRET system as a sensor was demonstrated by Hg (II) detection in water. At pH 7, a linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of Hg (II) (0–32 nmol/L), with a detection limit of 5.3 nmol/L. The new detection method was proven to be sensitive for detecting Hg 2+ in water solutions. Moreover, the method showed high selectivity for Hg 2+ over several metal ions, including Na + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Cu 2+ . The CdSe QDs/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet conjugate exhibited desirable long-term stability and reversibility as a novel FRET sensor. The novel FRET-based fluorescence detection provided an attractive assay platform for quantifying Hg 2+ in complex water solutions.

An “Off–On” approach for highly sensitive and selective detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) and l -cysteine ( l -Cys) was demonstrated with the use of water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) as novel fluorescent probe. In this present sensing system, Hg 2+ cations can efficiently coordinate onto the surface of CDs by means of electrostatic interactions and remarkably quench the fluorescence signal of CDs as a result of the fluorescence charge transfer (turn-off). In addition, the resulting CDs-Hg 2+ system was observed to be sensitive to l -Cys due to the ability of l -Cys to coordinate with Hg 2+ and the formation of strong Hg 2+ -SR bond. When l -Cys was added, Hg 2+ combined with l -Cys rather than with CDs resulting in the remove of Hg 2+ from the surface of CDs and shielding of fluorescence quenching, and thus, a significant fluorescence restore of CDs was observed (turn-on). Under the optimized conditions, good linearity for detecting Hg 2+ was attained over the concentration range from 2 to 22 μM with a detection limit of 0.017 μM, while the concentrations of l -Cys ranging from 2 to 20 μM exhibited a linear relationship with the relative fluorescence intensity with a correlation coefficient of R 2 = 0.99329. Moreover, this CDs-based sensor was successfully applied for visual identification and quantitation of Hg 2+ and l -Cys in real water sample and fluorescence imaging of NIH-3T3 cells with satisfying resolution.

A simple but highly selective coumarin-based fluorescence probe 1 , 8-(1,3-dithiane)-7-hydroxycoumarin was designed and synthesized for both the ratiometric detection of Hg 2+ and the on–off response to pH change in aqueous solution. The sensor detected Hg 2+ selectively via Hg 2+ -promoted thioacetal deprotection reaction within five minutes and reflected pH in the range from 7.8 to 11.9 as a result of the equilibrium between weak-fluorescent acid form and strong-fluorescent base form. In addition, the probe has an excellent selectivity towards Hg 2+ over other competitive metal ions for biomedical and environmental applications. The sensing behavior of our probe was studied by UV–visible absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra .

A solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor based on a DNA-modified electrode platform that depends on the variation of π–π interaction before and after the binding of target analytes is put forward. The single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probe was successfully assembled on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which was pre-modified with Ru(bpy)32+ complex and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The ssDNA probe could strongly adsorb graphene due to the strong π–π interaction between nucleotides and graphene (GN), while in the presence of Hg2+, the conformational transformation of DNA from a single-stranded to a double-stranded structure resulted in inhibited adsorption of GN. With thymine (T)-rich ssDNA as a Hg2+ probe, we prepared the ECL biosensor by using ferrocene–graphene (Fc–GN) as a quenching unit to quench the ECL emission of Ru(bpy)32+, and the Hg2+ can be detected by quenching efficiency transformation when the Fc–GN gets away from Ru(bpy)32+. The biosensor exhibited a sensitive response to various ranges of concentration of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 18 pM. The ECL biosensor held great promise in the highly sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ in natural water.

Inspired by the bioadhesive and redox properties of the 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylalanine (DOPA) contained in marine mussels, a facile, rapid and economic colorimetric strategy for Hg2+ detection was developed. The abundant catechol chains on the surface of Ag@DOPA can reduce Hg2+ to Hg0 and form a Ag@DOPA@Hg nanostructure with the deposition of Hg0. The nanostructures of Ag@DOPA and Ag@DOPA@Hg were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, elemental mapping and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The formation of the Ag@DOPA@Hg nanostructure causes a change in the color of the Ag@DOPA colloids from golden yellow to purple blue, making it directly possible to detect Hg2+ using a colorimetric strategy within 5 minutes. With increasing concentrations of Hg2+ from 10 nM to 4 μM, the surface plasmon resonance absorbance peak of the Ag@DOPA colloids decreased in intensity and exhibited a good linear relationship with the Hg2+ concentration. The limit of detection was determined as 5 nM. Furthermore, this response was found to be highly selective for Hg2+ as the absorption spectrum was not affected by other metal ions such as Pb2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Al3+, Ni2+, Co2+, etc. The excellent stability, selectivity and sensitivity of this strategy offer analytical practicability for Hg2+ detection in real water samples with recoveries in the range of 104–105% and cosmetic samples with recoveries in the range of 85–103%.

A novel ‘turn on’ fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission was designed, prepared, characterized and applied to fluorescence imaging of Hg 2+ in live HeLa cells. Unique recognition mechanism of the probe toward Hg 2+ has been determined by UV/vis, fluorescence spectra, SEM, mass spectra and 1 H NMR studies, respectively. The probe displayed higher properties such as, stability to pH, fast-response time with Hg 2+ , a lower detection limit, stronger antijamming capability and better imaging in live cells compared with other probes. More importantly, to further exhibited the practicability of the probe in biological system, the probe was applied to detect Hg 2+ in live HeLa cells. The fluorescence images for detection of intracellular Hg 2+ at different concentrations have been performed. The superior properties of the probe make it of great potential use in vitro or in vivo sensing some species of biologically studies.

We have proposed here a facile, simple, and cost-effective turn-on assay for melamine with carbon nanodots (C-dots) as a fluorescence reader. Melamine is prone to coordinate with Hg2+ due to the presence of a multi-nitrogen heterocyclic ring. This property is the cause for the anti-quenching ability of Hg2+ to C-dots through decreasing the interaction between Hg2+ and C-dots. By this method, a detection limit of 0.3 μM is obtained, which is approximately 65 times lower than that of the US Food and Drug Administration estimated melamine safety limit of 20 μM. In addition, several real samples including raw milk and milk powder are analyzed using the sensing system with satisfactory recoveries. This research may expand the applications of C-dots as the fluorescent probe in food safety.

This work reported a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based microfluidic chip that detects mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in water with high sensitivity and good reproducibility. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are easily fabricated on a Si substrate using a thin, thermally treated Ag film. Cy3 functionalized single-stranded DNA (Cy3-ssDNA) serves as the probe, which is immobilized on the AgNPs (Cy3-ssDNA/AgNPs), generating a SERS-based sensing surface. Due to the strong interaction between thymine (T) bases and Hg 2+ , in the presence of these ions, the ssDNA forms a T-Hg 2+ -T hairpin structure, which enhances the SERS signal. This method exhibits a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10 −13 M. Furthermore, the proposed SERS chip demonstrates exceptional selectivity for mercury ions, as well as good reusability. The reusability of the SERS microfluidic chip was evaluated using the L-cysteine, which has a stronger affinity than T for Hg 2+ . By applying L-cysteine, the chip can be reused 10 times for the detection of Hg 2+ at concentrations as low as 1 × 10 −8 M. The method proposed in this study shows good sensitivity and holds good potential for application in the detection of Hg 2+ .

We report a facile approach to prepare a superior magnetic adsorbent towards Hg 2+ ions by decoration of defective MoS 2 (d-MoS 2 ) nanosheets with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles . The adsorption performance of the resulted d-MoS 2 /Fe 3 O 4 nanohybrids towards Hg 2+ ions was studied as a function of solution pH, contact time, and Hg 2+ ions concentration. The d-MoS 2 /Fe 3 O 4 nanohybrids simultaneously showed high adsorption capacity, outstanding selectivity, rapid adsorption rate, and excellent magnetic separation capability for the removal of Hg 2+ ions. Their adsorption capacities at the residual concentration of Hg 2+ ions 1 μg/L (drinking water regulation limit) and 2 μg/L (wastewater regulation limit) are 0.05 mg/g and 0.11 mg/g, respectively. With initial Hg 2+ ions concentration of 10 mg/L, the residual concentration of Hg 2+ ions decreased to as low as 1.7 μg/L after adsorption for only 20 min. The adsorption process can be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of d-MoS 2 /Fe 3 O 4 nanohybrids can reach 425.5 mg/g, which is much higher than other reported magnetic adsorbents. Moreover, the Hg 2+ ions adsorbed d-MoS 2 /Fe 3 O 4 nanohybrids could be well regenerated in acid solution without obvious decline of removal efficiency.

In contrast to peroxidase-mimicking nanozymes, oxidase mimics directly employ molecular oxygen (O 2 ) as oxidant to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Generally, transition metal-based nanozymes exhibit poor oxidase-like activity. We herein constructed a colorimetric sensor based on Co-based oxidase mimic, where the Co nanoparticles were encapsulated in hollow N-doped carbon nanospheres (Co-N/C). Co nanoparticles confined catalyst effectively anchored the active part, which greatly influenced the catalytic activity of the oxidase-mimic nanozymes. Due to the antioxidative property of L-Cysteine (L-Cys) and the specific complexation between L-Cys and Hg 2+ , the rationally designed Co-N/C could be utilized to detect L-Cys and Hg 2+ . The proposed sensing platform exhibited wide linear ranges of 1–30 μM for L-Cys and 0.6–30 μM for Hg 2+ , respectively. The excellent selectivity of the constructed sensor showed the reliability and practicality for the assay of L-Cys and Hg 2+ in fetal bovine serum. The spatial confinement can prevent the aggregation of Co nanoparticles, boosting the stability and catalytic performance in colorimetric sensing.

Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) is considered a harmful neurotoxin, and real-time monitoring of Hg 2+ concentrations in environmental and biological samples is critical. Fluorescent probes are a rapidly emerging visualization tool owing to their simple design and good selectivity. Herein, a novel fluorescence (FL) probe 2-(4-((6-((quinolin-8-yloxy)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)methyl)piperazin-1-yl)anthracene-9,10-dione ( QPPA ) is designed using piperazine as a linker between the anthraquinone group, which serves as a fluorophore, and N 4 O as the Hg 2+ ligand. The probe exhibits FL “turn-on” sensing of Hg 2+ because the complex inhibits the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. Moreover, QPPA can overcome the invasion by other possible cations, resulting in a clear color change from orange to colorless with the addition Hg 2+ . The chelation of QPPA with Hg 2+ in a 1:1 ratio. Subsequently, the theoretically determined binding sites of the ligand to Hg 2+ are validated through 1 H NMR titration. The in situ QPPA –Hg 2+ complex can be subjected to Hg 2+ extraction following the introduction of S 2− owing to its robust binding capacity. The exceptional limit of detection values for Hg 2+ and S 2− are obtained as 63.0 and 79.1 nM (S/N = 3), respectively. Moreover, QPPA can display bright red FL in the presence of Hg 2+ in different biological specimens such as HeLa cells, zebrafish, onion root tip tissues, and water flea Daphnia carinata , further providing an effective strategy for environmental monitoring and bioimaging of Hg 2+ in living organisms.
