PVDF-based energetic films with high output performance: Synergistic effect based on Al/Ti

Lejian Chen,Xianghong Xiao,Haofang Yuan,Hongyu Chen,Yuxuan Zhou,Yinghua Ye,RuiQi Shen,Lizhi Wu

With the ongoing advancement of miniaturization and microfabrication, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) energetic devices are increasingly demanding higher output capabilities from energetic materials. This study investigates the incorporation of Titanium (Ti) into PVDF-based energetic films to improve their performance. We fabricated five Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF energetic composite films with varying Ti contents by direct ink writing (DIW). The results indicate that the Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF films demonstrate superior performance compared to Al/CuO/PVDF(AT-0). Notably, the 50 wt% Al/50 wt% Ti/CuO/PVDF (AT-50) film achieved optimal performance, exhibiting a 68% increase in combustion rate compared to the AT-0 film. Additionally, it showed a reduction in ignition delay time by 6 ms, an increase in flame temperature of 160.9 K, a 24% rise in maximum pressure, a pressurization rate enhancement of 117%, and an overall increase in heat release of 26.8%. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the Al/Ti bimetallic fuels, where their close contact creates an alloying reaction that releases a large amount of heat and avoids the detrimental effects of Al sintering. This Al/Ti/CuO/PVDF energetic composite film, characterized by its exceptional synergistic mechanism and high energy output, holds significant promise for integration with MEMS devices, paving the way for innovative applications in micro-ignition, micro-propulsion, and micro-startup technologies. Highlights Ti was added to the PVDF-based energetic films to form the dual-fuel system. The Al/Ti dual-fuel has a synergistic effect to improve output performance. The 50wt%Al/50wt%Ti/CuO/PVDF film can achieve optimal output performance.

Morphology-Dependent Behavior of PVDF/ZnO Composites: Their Fabrication and Application in Pressure Sensors

Binbin Zhang,Wenhui Zhang,Wei Luo,Zhijie Liang,Yan Hong,Jianhui Li,Guoyun Zhou,Wei He

This study investigated the impact of zinc oxide’s (ZnO’s) morphology on the piezoelectric performance of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composites for flexible sensors. Rod-like (NR) and sheet-like (NS) ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal methods and incorporated into PVDF through direct ink writing (DIW). The structural analyses confirmed the successful formation of wurtzite ZnO and enhanced β-phase content in the PVDF/ZnO composites. At a degree of 15 wt% loading, the ZnO-NS nanoparticles achieved the highest β-phase fraction (81.3%) in PVDF due to their high specific surface area, facilitating dipole alignment and strain-induced crystallization. The optimized PVDF/ZnO-NS-15 sensor demonstrated superior piezoelectric outputs (4.75 V, 140 mV/N sensitivity) under a 27 N force, outperforming its ZnO-NR counterparts (3.84 V, 100 mV/N). The cyclic tests revealed exceptional durability (<5% signal attenuation after 1000 impacts) and a rapid response (<100 ms). The application trials validated their real-time motion-monitoring capabilities, including finger joint flexion detection. This work highlights the morphology-dependent interfacial polarization as a critical factor for high-performance flexible sensors, offering a scalable DIW-based strategy for wearable electronics.

LIPUS Responsive Dopamine-Modified PVDF Piezoelectric Nanofiber Membrane for Full-Thickness Skin Wound Healing

Zhiying Zhang,Lijun Liu,Huan Wang,Wangni Xie,Wenhao Zhai,Linlin Wen,Boya Zhang,Kexuan Liu,Xue Zhang,Shuchen Liu,Lei Huang,Daowei Li,Yanmin Zhou

Objective Large full-thickness skin wounds pose significant challenges, particularly in achieving scar-free healing and the regeneration of skin appendages. This study introduces a portable approach for promoting scarless healing and skin appendage regeneration by utilizing low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) activated piezoelectric electrospun membranes to modulate the local electrical environment. Methods Dopamine-modified polyvinylidene fluoride (DA/PVDF) nanomembranes were fabricated via electrospinning, followed by piezoelectric characterization under varying LIPUS stimulation. Cell adhesion was examined using SEM and laser confocal microscopy to assess surface interactions. Cell proliferation and migration were further analyzed using the CCK-8 assay and Transwell migration assay, respectively. Finally, the effects of DA/PVDF membranes on full-thickness skin defect healing were tested in a mouse model. The healing process was documented with photographs, and functional skin regeneration was evaluated through histological analysis. Results The DA/PVDF nanomembranes had an average diameter of 732 ± 232 nm and generated a voltage of 450 mV under LIPUS stimulation, a 1.28-fold increase compared to PVDF membranes alone. In vitro, LIPUS-activated membranes enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation, resulting in a 1.14-fold increase in cell growth over three days. The transwell migration assays showed 244.67 ± 7.85 migrated cells. In vivo, the DA/PVDF+LIPUS group exhibited significantly higher wound healing rates, with improved epidermal regeneration, collagen fiber deposition and remodeling, and enhanced blood vessel and skin appendage formation. Conclusion DA modification enhances the piezoelectric properties of PVDF membranes, boosting cell adhesion and promoting dermal and vascular regeneration. LIPUS-generated mechanical waves effectively stimulate membrane deformation, producing a localized electrical microenvironment that mimics the natural bioelectric field of skin and accelerates functional wound healing.

Preparation of multifunctional PVDF/AgNWs nanofiber membranes and study on their warmth retention properties

Yongjing Fu,Huijia Wang,Chuan Zhou,Yiming Wang,Ni Li

Heat insulation and solar energy use are attractive strategies to cope with the serious and external cold environment. Here, silver nanowires (AgNWs) with high purity and aspect ratio were synthesized by polyol method and PVDF/AgNWs nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrostatic spinning. We investigated the warmth retention properties of nanofiber membranes using a heating table and simulated sunlight as the heat source, respectively. The results showed that the nanofiber membrane doped with 2 wt % AgNWs had a high porosity of 84% and thus a low thermal conductivity of 18 mW m −1  K −1 . Meanwhile the nanofiber membrane exhibited stable and long-lasting heat insulation behaviors and the surface temperature of the fiber membrane could reach nearly 43 °C after 5 min of irradiation with a 100 mW cm −2 light intensity and about 70 °C after 2 min of irradiation with a 300 mW cm −2 light intensity. In addition, the nanofiber membrane showed hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 138° and breathability with air permeability of 75 mm s −1 . The stress and strain of the nanofiber membrane was 3.6 Mpa and 211.3% respectively.

One-step fabrication of PVDF/BTMSPA composite membranes for enhanced n-butanol/water separation

Sainan Hu,Zhixiang Fu,Yongchao Chen,Chuyu Zhou,Zhengdong Fei

A novel polyvinylidene fluoride/bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)amine (PVDF/BTMSPA) asymmetric composite membrane was fabricated through a one-step vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) process. The hydrophilic BTMSPA monomers preferentially migrated to the membrane surface during VIPS, where they underwent hydrolysis and condensation to form a dense skin layer, while the hydrophobic PVDF matrix solidified into a porous support layer. By varying the VIPS duration, the skin layer structure could be tuned from porous to dense. At a VIPS time of 0.5 h, a spontaneously formed dense-skinned PVDF/BTMSPA composite membrane was achieved. The membrane demonstrated preferential adsorption of n-butanol over water, exhibiting optimal separation performance for a 4 wt% n-butanol/water mixture at 70 °C, with a flux of 1980 g/m 2 ·h and a separation factor of 63.65. This work not only provides a facile and efficient VIPS-based strategy for fabricating asymmetric composite membranes but also highlights the potential of PVDF/BTMSPA membranes for n-butanol/water separation applications.

Fabrication and performance of nano-SiO2@PVDF self-cleaning coatings for photovoltaic module applications

Yongqian Shen,Weilian Sun,Zizhou Yuan,Hongwei Zhang,Rui Si,Tao Yong,Yan Fu,Feng Gao,Pingbo Wang

Aiming to address the issue of PV efficiency degradation caused by dust accumulation on modules, hydrophobic coatings with high light transmittance, self-cleaning properties, and mechanical durability have become a research hotspot for PV dust removal. In this work, a nano-SiO 2 @PVDF self-cleaning coating was prepared via a spraying method, with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as raw materials. Combined with hydrophobic modification by hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and enhanced interfacial bonding by the γ-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560) coupling agent, the micro-nano rough structure and hydrophobic properties were optimized by adjusting the volume ratio of silica sol to PVDF. The coating exhibited a light transmittance of 88.5 % and a pencil hardness of 4H. After 35 cycles of sandpaper abrasion, its contact angle (CA) remained greater than 125°, and it maintained stable hydrophobicity under ultraviolet (UV) aging and pH 1–14 environments. Applied to PV glass, after 14 days of natural dust fall, the coating group had 28.2 % less initial dust coverage than the blank group, with a self-cleaning efficiency of 78.45 %, reducing dust-induced power loss by 68.3 %. This performance stemmed from micro-nano structures forming air films for water droplets to carry dust away, and PVDF's C F bonds protecting SiO 2 from UV degradation. This work provided a highly transparent, hydrophobic, and durable self-cleaning solution for PV stations in arid and dusty areas, alleviating dust-water shortage conflicts, cutting maintenance costs, improving efficiency, and supporting stable PV operation and the national “Dual-Carbon” strategy.

Environmentally friendly electrostatically driven self-assembled LDH/GO/PVDF composite membrane for water treatment

Haojie Zeng,Zongxue Yu,Yixin Peng,Lilian Zhu

In this contribution, an environmentally friendly electrostatically driven self-assembled layered double hydroxide (LDH)/graphene oxide (GO)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane was prepared and evaluated. The composite membrane was prepared based on the electrostatic self-assembly between positively charged LDH and negatively charged GO, then above composite was loaded on the PVDF membrane substrate by vacuum suction filtration. The preparation process does not contain organic matter, which was very environmentally friendly. The properties of the composite membrane were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy . The above characterizations showed that the addition of LDH can increase the layer spacing of the GO sheets, the hydrophilicity of the composite membrane, and the removal rates of Cu 2+ and methylene blue (MB). More importantly, the composite membrane has excellent stability in water and maintains a stable removal rate after long-term filtration. And no significant changes occur even after being left in the ultrasonic bath for a while. In general, the LDH/GO/PVDF composite membrane prepared in this study has a great application value and prospect in the water treatment and opens up a new path in improving membrane performance .

Effect and degradation pathway of sulfamethoxazole removal in MBR by PVDF/DA modified membrane

Zhang Meilin,Li Shaofeng,Sun Jian,Sun Jianping,Wang Lei,Zhao Rui

To reduce the hazard of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to the water ecology, the removal mechanism of SMX in wastewater was revealed. This study evaluated the PVDF/DA modified membrane in the membrane bioreactor (MBR) toward the removal and degradation of SMX as a recalcitrant micropollutant. A strategy of dopamine for surface modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was proposed, and PVDF/DA membrane was prepared. Subsequently, PVDF/DA was run in the MBR for 60 days, and the reactor could produce good removal ability for SMX after certain acclimation. When the SMX concentration increased from 0.5 to 2 mg/L, liquid chromatography was used for analysis, and the results showed that the average removal rate was above 85%. The removal effect of COD and NH4+-N and the degree of membrane fouling were also evaluated. By measuring the extracellular polymer (EPS) content, the results showed that after 30 days of operation, the protein and polysaccharide contents in the cake layer on the surface of the PVDF membrane were 1.35 times and 1.49 times that of PVDF/DA membrane, respectively, and the PVDF/DA membrane could alleviate membrane fouling, thereby improving the service life of the membrane and reducing its operating cost. Finally, degradation by-products are evaluated to achieve deeper insight into the degradation mechanisms in the MBR process.

Acoustic Core–Shell Resonance Harvester for Application of Artificial Cochlea Based on the Piezo-Triboelectric Effect

Jiaqi Zheng,Zhaohan Yu,Yunming Wang,Yue Fu,Dan Chen,Huamin Zhou

The demand for flexible, efficient, and self-powered cochlear implants applied to remedy sensorineural hearing loss caused by dysfunctional hair cells remains urgent. Herein, we report an acoustic core–shell resonance harvester for the application of artificial cochleae based on the piezo-triboelectric effect. Integrating dispersed BaTiO3 particles as cores and porous PVDF-TrFE as shells, the acoustic harvest devices with ingenious core–shell structures exhibit outstanding piezo-triboelectric properties (Voc = 15.24 V, DAsc = 9.22 mA/m2). The acoustic harvest principle reveals that BaTiO3 nanocores resonate with sound waves and bounce against porous PVDF-TrFE microshells, thereby generating piezo-triboelectric signals. By experimental measurement and numerical modeling, the vibration process and resonance regulation of acoustic harvest devices were intensively investigated to regulate the influential parameters. Furthermore, the acoustic harvesters exhibit admirable feasibility and sensitivity for sound recording and show potential application for artificial cochlea.

Fabrication of Humidity Sensors Based on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dot-Embedded PVDF/TPU Membrane

Zhu Xingwei,Cheng Yongchao,Gu Xiuquan

A flexible temperature and humidity sensor has been developed based on a composite of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The sensor performance was optimized by introducing graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) and ionic liquids (TFSI) into the polymer composite. This type of humidity sensors has high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent stability, making it suitable for use in wearable health monitoring. The addition of TPU into PVDF facilitates the formation of a porous structure which has both a large specific surface area and high hydrophilicity. After optimizing the PVDF/TPU mass ratio to 5:3, such a humidity sensor displays 1.46 times higher sensitivity than that of pure PVDF film, with a linear response range of 10–90% relative humidity. The response time and recovery time are 7.67 s and 6.37 s, respectively. Owing to the improved hydrophobicity, the sensors also exhibit a good stability in a high humidity environment for > 10 days without significant degradation. Moreover, such a composite also has the capability to distinguish normal breathing from rapid breathing, demonstrating its potential in wearable health monitoring.

Tributyl Citrate as Diluent for Preparation of Pvdf Porous Membrane via Thermally Induced Phase Separation

Zhao-Cai Zhang,Chun-Gang Guo,Jing-Lie Lv

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was successfully prepared by PVDF/tributyl citrate (TBC) via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). TBC was used as diluent for membrane preparation, which is citric acid esters non-toxic, non-odorous, easy to prepare and comparatively cheap. The effects of PVDF content on crystallinity of PVDF and porous structure were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry and pore size analyzer instrument. The results showed that PVDF was most able to crystallize and the membrane pore size became more uniform and smaller at higher polymer content.

Setaria-Like ZIF-8@ZnO/PVDF Nanofiber Membranes for Efficient Piezoelectric Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline

Jufei Xu,Jie Yu,Neng Hu,Qi Zhong

The continuous existence of antibiotic pollutants presents a grave threat to the ecological environment. This study aims to develop an efficient and stable hybrid photocatalytic membrane for degrading tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Inspired by setaria, the novel hybrid ZIF-8@ZnO/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (PZM) are successfully prepared by in situ growth of ZnO nanowires on PVDF membranes via hydrothermal synthesis, followed by incorporation of the metal–organic framework material ZIF-8. The preparation conditions for ZnO nanowires are systematically optimized. Results indicate that the prepared ZnO/PVDF membranes (PZ) exhibit optimal photocatalytic activity when the ZnO precursor concentration is 0.5 wt% and the hydrothermal growth time is 2 hr. Additionally, with the increased stirring rate of the reaction system, the superior piezoelectric properties of the PVDF nanofiber membranes are applied to accelerate TC degradation. Most importantly, compared to pure PZ membranes, the hybrid PZM membranes significantly enhance the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TC. Under visible light irradiation, the hybrid PZM nanofiber membranes achieve TC degradation efficiency of 75%, which is increased by 66% compared to that of ZnO powder. This investigation offers a potentially viable approach for the design and construction of hybrid photocatalytic materials for effectively eliminating emerging organic pollutants from water.
