Strong green upconversion luminescence of rare earth Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped Ca3(VO4)2 phosphor for optical sensing

Ping Wang,Bin Duan,Yuanyuan Fan,Min Luo,Liming Tang,Changchun Ding,Tong Liu,Wei Jin,Junshan Hu

A novel upconversion phosphor, Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 co-doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ , was successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 980 nm near-infrared excitation, this material exhibits remarkable upconversion luminescence, with intense green emissions at 527 nm and 550 nm, and a weaker red emission at 657 nm. The optimal doping concentrations were determined to be 0.03 for Yb 3+ and 0.005 for Er 3+ , enabling maximum luminescent efficiency. Spectroscopic investigations including upconversion photoluminescence, excitation, and emission spectra confirmed that the upconversion follows a distinct energy transfer mechanism: Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 I 11/2 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 F 7/2 ). In addition to its excellent luminescent properties, the Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 : 0.03Yb 3+ /0.005Er 3+ phosphor exhibits reliable optical thermal sensitivity over a wide temperature range (298–673 K), with a peak relative sensitivity of 1.11 % K −1 at 298 K. These outstanding optical characteristics make Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 : 0.03Yb 3+ /0.005Er 3+ a promising candidate for display and lighting technologies.

Enhanced Short-Wave Infrared Luminescence in Yb3+-Doped Cr(PO3)3 Phosphor with over 60% External Quantum Efficiency

Lipeng Huang,Yanjie Liang,Xulong Lv,Xihui Shan,Yi Zhang,Xiao-Jun Wang

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) light sources, as crucial components of SWIR imaging and spectroscopy technologies, have garnered significant attention recently. The rapid development of portable electronic devices has created a demand for compact and efficient SWIR emitters, and phosphor-converted SWIR LEDs represent the optimal technological solution to meet this requirement. Here, a Cr(PO3)3:Yb3+ phosphor with highly efficient and pure SWIR luminescence under 450 nm blue LED excitation is reported. Upon doping with Yb3+ in the Cr(PO3)3 matrix, the resulting material is capable of effectively converting blue excitation photons to SWIR luminescence spanning from 900 to 1200 nm, with a dominant emission peak at 1003 nm due to the efficient energy transfer from Cr3+ to Yb3+. Notably, this phosphor demonstrates an ultrahigh internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 95.7% and a record external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 60.3% upon 450 nm blue light excitation. Moreover, the fabricated SWIR LED prototype device by combining the Cr(PO3)3:Yb3+ phosphor and a commercial 450 nm blue LED chip exhibits SWIR output power of 24.1 mW at 200 mA input current and a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 12.8% at 20 mA. This study not only opens avenues for realizing high-efficiency SWIR luminescence by deliberately controlling energy transfer pathways in Cr-based material systems but also paves the way for the development of high-power SWIR light sources.

Mixed-cation effect for enhanced L-band spectral broadening in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluoro-sulfo-phosphate glasses

Weijie Zhu,Weichao Wang

The rapid expansion of data-intensive technologies such as 5G, AI, and cloud computing is pushing optical communication systems to their limits, necessitating the development of advanced materials to extend bandwidth into the L- and U-bands. Fluoro-sulfo-phosphate (FSP) glasses, owing to their multi-anionic compositions and tunable network structures, offer a promising platform for next-generation broadband fiber amplifiers. In this work, a mixed-cation approach employing K + and Ba 2+ is employed to manipulate the local structural environment and enhance glass-forming ability, lifetime (8.7–9.22 ms for Er-doped, ∼10 ms for Er 3 + /Yb 3+ co-doped), emission cross-section (0.59-0.70 × 10 − 20  cm 2 ), energy transfer efficiency (∼85 %), and thermal quenching resistance. Despite their similar sizes and electronegativities, K + and Ba 2+ exhibit contrasting field strengths and polarizabilities, enabling a controlled balance between network connectivity and local disorder. Thermodynamic modeling and experimental results confirm that the introduction of mixed cations significantly broadens the glass-forming region. The addition of AlF 3 further strengthens the network, allowing for the preparation of stable K/Ba-FSP glasses with improved mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. Spectroscopic analysis reveals a substantial enhancement in L-band emission efficiency and gain characteristics, with performance improvements ranging from 30 % to 150 % over conventional glass hosts. These findings position K/Ba-FSP glasses as a robust and high-performance candidate material system for broadband rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers and lasers.

Manipulating the emission intensity and lifetime of NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ simultaneously by embedding it into CdS photonic crystals

Xin Su,Xiaoqian Sun,Suli Wu,Shufen Zhang

Photonic crystals (PCs) have long been considered effective for tuning upconversion luminescence due to their photonic band gap (PBG) and the redistribution of density of optical states (DOS). Although the emission intensity can be changed obviously by the PC effect, rarely an obvious lifetime change consistent with theory is observed due to the low refractive index of PS or SiO2 spheres in the commonly used PCs. Herein, CdS/NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ composite PCs with a high refractive index contrast are fabricated in one step with upconversion nanoparticles filled inside CdS PCs. When the upconversion emission peak lies at the edge of the PBGs of the composite PCs, a dramatic decrease in lifetime by 28% and 41% is observed for the green and red emissions, respectively. At the same time, obvious emission intensity enhancements are also observed. In contrast, PS PCs with a low refractive index contrast show a slight effect on the lifetime of upconversion luminescence with their emission peak at the edge of the PBGs. Our results agree well with theory and prove that a sufficiently large refractive index contrast is necessary for PCs to dramatically tune the luminescence lifetime and intensity simultaneously.

Morphology evolution, tunable multicolor and enhanced upconversion luminescence via Li+ doping in Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ tri-doped NaYF4 microcrystals

Xuegang Zheng,Ying Chen,Shusheng Pan,Zhiyu Liu,Dekang Xu,Yueli Zhang,Hao Lin

In this paper, a range of Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ /Ho 3+ triple-doped NaYF 4 microcrystals (MCs) were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, which proved to be a hexagonal phase structure with uniformity. The morphology of NaYF 4 :20% Yb 3+ , 1% Ho 3+ MCs with different doping amounts of NaOH and citric acid were studied using scanning electron microscope, and the distribution of elements of this doping system was characterized by energy dispersive spectrometer. Upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of the MCs using a fluorescence spectrometer with 980 nm excitation were researched, and the results demonstrated that the tunable multi-color of the MCs can be achieved by varying the doping amount of different rare-earth ions. The UC mechanism of the MCs were systematically described. Li + doped the series MCs improved their UCL efficiency. By investigating the UCL the MCs of the Li + -doped system, the emission intensities of blue (450 nm, 475 nm), green (541 nm), and red (648 nm) light of the series MCs were increased by 2.75, 2.095, 2.65, and 2.87 times, which is of great significance for its application in light-emitting diodes and solar cells.

Spectral broadening and enhanced ultra-broadband emission in Ca3TiTaGa3O12:Cr3+, Yb3+ co-doped phosphor for NIR pc-LED applications

Yichen Yang,Xiaojiao Kang,Qiwen Pan,Zhennan Zhu,Wei Lü

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) are gaining significant interest due to their potential in spectroscopic applications. NIR phosphors play a critical role in pc-LED devices by converting visible light into NIR emission with high stability and tunability. In this study, an efficient broadband NIR phosphor, Ca 3 TiTaGa 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ , is developed and systematically investigated. Ca 3 TiTaGa 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ exhibits a broad NIR emission band centered at 790 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 202 nm upon 450 nm blue light excitation. The emission bandwidth is further expanded to 303 nm by introducing an optimal amount of Yb 3+ co-doping, which produces a merged ultra-broadband Cr 3+ –Yb 3+ emission. Luminescence and decay kinetic analysis reveal that the resultant ultra-broadband emission originates from effective energy transfer Cr 3+ to Yb 3+ . Moreover, the Yb 3+ co-doping enhances the internal quantum efficiency from 30.5% to 41.3%, and improves thermal stability with emission retention increasing from 42.6% to 57.4% at 150 °C. The Ca 3 TiTaGa 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ and Ca 3 TiTaGa 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ , Yb 3+ phosphors are successfully integrated with a 450 nm blue LED chip, demonstrating their potential for practical NIR pc-LED device applications in night vision and bioimaging.

Luminescence thermal enhancement property of Zn3Mo2O9:Yb3+/Tb3+(Eu3+) phosphor and the application for temperature sensing and anti-counterfeiting

Yuhong Zhang,Jingyi Zhang,Jingliang Zhang,Chenhao Han,Hang Liu

In this paper, a series of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ phosphor are prepared by solid-state reaction. The up-conversion(UC)/down-shifting(DS) luminescence properties are investigated in detail. The intensities of all emission bands present luminescence thermal enhancement under 980 nm excitation. From 293 to 493 K, the red emission intensity of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Eu 3+ sample increase by 2.36 times, and the green emission band intensity of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ sample increase by 4.85 times. The temperature-dependent cooperative energy transfer(CET) process of Yb 3+ ions has an important contribution to thermal enhancement due to the negative thermal expansion(NTE) of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 matrix. In addition, the optical temperature sensing properties of the Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphor are discussed according to the luminescence intensity ratio(LIR) technique. Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphor can obtain bright deep red, yellow and orange light under the excitation of 395, 487 and 980 nm, which is used for multi-mode fluorescence anti-counterfeiting.

Fractal Structure Markedly Suppresses Near-Infrared Thermal Quenching in Yb3+-Doped Double Perovskite Cs2NaHoBr6 and Enables Ultrahigh-Temperature Sensing

Chenge Wu,Wanyin Ge,Maohao Yang,Jieyuan Bai,Meimei Xu

Doping perovskite materials with rare-earth ions is an effective strategy for achieving near-infrared (NIR) emission, yet their practical applications are severely limited by the thermal quenching of luminescence at elevated temperatures. Here, a disordered double perovskite (DDP) powder, Cs2NaHoBr6, was synthesized by solvent–evaporation crystallization. Under 365 nm excitation, the material exhibited red and NIR emission. We therefore introduced Yb3+ doping to exploit the energy transfer and cross-relaxation between Yb3+ and Ho3+, achieving a quantum efficiency of 20.94% in the NIR band. While the DDP Cs2NaHoBr6:Yb3+ demonstrated antithermal quenching behavior, fluorescence dropped once the temperature exceeded 373 K. To simultaneously enhance high-temperature luminescence and thermometric performance, we constructed an ordered fractal double perovskite (OFDP) Cs2NaHoBr6:Yb3+ via in situ solution crystallization. The OFDP exhibited significantly enhanced luminescence properties at high temperatures, with a fluorescence intensity 105 times greater than that at room temperature, and the peak temperature for thermal enhancement was increased by approximately 100 K compared to the DDP. Furthermore, the relative sensitivity was improved from 8.58% K–1 in DDP to 11.54% K–1 in OFDP. This work not only elucidates the critical role of crystal order in regulating the thermal stability of rare-earth ion luminescence but also provides a universal strategy for designing optical materials with superior thermal stability and high-performance temperature-sensing capabilities.

β-NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles incorporated into the mesoporous layer for high efficiency perovskite solar cells

Jiwei Liang,Huiping Gao,Mengji Yi,Wenjia Shi,Yuefeng Liu,Zhenlong Zhang,Yanli Mao

β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ @ TiO 2 core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were synthesized and incorporated into the TiO 2 mesoporous layer of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Changes of the upconversion spectra of the UCNPs suggest the existence of the electron injection from NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ to the conduction band (CB) of TiO 2 through the NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ /TiO 2 nano-heterojunctions. The core-shell UCNPs that incorporated into the TiO 2 mesoporous layer not only act as the upconversion centers to use the NIR light but also serve as the light scatter centers to enhance the light harvesting. When using mesoporous layer containing the core-shell UCNPs in PSCs, the efficiency of the best devices is 16.27%, which is about 16.38% higher than that of the devices without core-shell UCNPs (13.98%). The significant enhancement in the performance of the PSCs is attributed to light scattering, NIR light upconversion and electron injection from the UCNPs to the CB of TiO 2 .

Electronic transition pathways in energy transfer processes for upconversion photoluminescence of Yb3+/Ho3+ co-doped NaLa(MoO4)2 microcrystals

Anming Li,Ranhua Lu,Yongzhe Zhao,JieJie Yang,Junli Wang,Gao Zhao

In recent years, upconversion photoluminescent micro/nanocrystals with unique anti-Stokes luminescence properties have shown high application value in many relevant fields. In this work, pure tetragonal phase NaLa(MoO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microspheres have been synthesized by a solvothermal method in the presence of oleic acid and 1-octadecene. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, NaLa(MoO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microcrystals emit red, green and near infrared upconversion luminescence with peak wavelengths at 660/643 nm, 541 nm, and 756 nm. Based on the analysis of excitation power-dependent upconversion luminescence intensities and energy level diagram of Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ , electronic transition pathways in the energy transfer processes for upconversion luminescence of NaLa(MoO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microcrystals are studied. For red upconversion luminescence at 660/643 nm, the predominant population pathway to state 5 F 5 (Ho 3+ ) is “Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 I 7 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 F 5 )”. While, “Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 I 6 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 F 4 / 5 S 2 )” process accounts for the population of state 5 F 4 / 5 S 2 (Ho 3+ ) for radiative transitions of upconversion luminescence at 541 and 756 nm. Energy back transfer contributes to the intense red upconversion luminescence at 660/643 nm. These electronic transition pathways in energy transfer processes are further confirmed by the analyses based on energy level mismatch and luminescent lifetimes.

Multifunctional BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ nanoparticles: an investigation on the emission color tuning, thermosensitivity, and bioimaging

Xinxin Yan,Tiesheng Li,Linna Guo,Honglei Li,Penglei Chen,Minghua Liu

Pure cubic phase and uniform BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by coprecipitation. The growth mechanism of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs was proposed based on evolution analysis of the time-dependent morphology, in which BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ was formed through the growth process of “nucleation to crystallization and Ostwald ripening”. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties and mechanism of BiF3:Ln3+ (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm)/Yb3+ under dual-wavelength excitation were also systematically investigated. The emission intensity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ by dual-wavelength excitation (λ = 980 nm + 1550 nm) was 1.49 times more than that excited by 1550 nm or 980 nm individually. Furthermore, the properties of the bright white and multicolor UCL showed that yellow, purple, green, or pinkish light could be observed by controlling the doping concentration of Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Er, Tm, and Ho), indicating that they had potential applications in backlight sources of color displays and security labeling. The temperature sensitivity of BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ exhibited a downward tendency and its max value was about 0.0036 K−1 at 273 K. Cell toxicity tests showed that the UCNPs in phospholipid aqueous solution presented low cytotoxicity. Also, in vivo imaging and X-ray imaging revealed that the BiF3:2%Er3+/20%Yb3+ NPs had deep penetration and high contrast, which meant it could be used as a potential probe and contrast agent in in vivo optical bioimaging.

Optical temperature sensing in Er3+-Yb3+ codoped CaWO4 and the laser induced heating effect on the luminescence intensity saturation

Wei Xu,Ying Cui,Yuwei Hu,Longjiang Zheng,Zhiguo Zhang,Wenwu Cao

CaWO 4 phosphors doping with different Er 3+ and Yb 3+ ion concentrations were synthetized through high temperature solid-state reaction technique. Excited by 980 nm laser, the influence of rare earth dopant concentration on the thermometry behavior of Er 3+ green upconversion emissions was discussed via the fluorescence intensity ratio method. Superior temperature sensing ability could be achieved in CaWO 4 : 0.1 mol% Er 3+ -3 mol% Yb 3+ , the maximum sensitivity of which is about 1.05 × 10 −2  K −1  at 439 K. Meanwhile, the pumping laser induced thermal effect on the saturation of upconversion emission intensity has been preliminarily studied. The temperature of the irradiation spot on sample caused by the exposure of excitation laser is observed to be greatly enhanced as the pumping power increased. Based on the steady-state rate equations and the temperature dependence of luminescence decay curves, theoretical calculations have been performed. The results confirm that the laser induced heating effect plays an important role in the luminescence intensity saturation phenomenon.
