Synthesis, characterization and release profiles of nanoparticles self-assembled from poly (PEGMA-co-MMA-co-acryloyl-β-CD) copolymers

Yongli Shi,Suying Ma,Ruiqiong Tian,Yingge Zhao,Qian Jiao,Xu Ma,Qing Shang

A novel amphiphilic copolymer was synthesized from poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA950), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acryloyl- β -cyclodextrin (acryloyl- β -CD) using the composites of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 /NaHSO 3 as the oxidation–reduction initiators. The successful fabrication of poly(PEGMA-co-MMA-co-acryloyl- β -CD) copolymers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), 1 H-nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectra. The amphiphilic copolymer could self-assemble into nanoparticles (NPs), and their morphology and particle size distribution were characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods. Ibuprofen (IBU) was encapsulated in the novel NPs, and the release profiles of IBU were investigated. FTIR and 1 H NMR spectra illustrated that the poly(PEGMA-co-MMA-co-acryloyl- β -CD) copolymers were synthesized without any residual monomers and initiators. TEM and AFM photographs suggested that the obtained NPs were spherical, and the DLS results indicated that the diameter of blank NPs was 157.3 ± 32.7 nm. The IBU release profile showed that the IBU-loaded NPs had certain pH responsibility. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Design and Characterization of High Gas Barrier and Fully Biobased Poly(1,5-pentylene succinate-co-itaconate-co-furanoate) Elastomers

Hao Lin,Wen Li,Qingpeng Ou,Jie Liu,Zhaoyang Wei,Zhao Wang,Dean Shi,Weiwei Lei,Liqun Zhang

Biomass feedstock is an accessible alternative to finite fossil chemical resources for fabricating durable and high-performance polymers. In this study, fully biobased poly(1,5-pentylene succinate-co-itaconate-co-furanoate) (PPeSIFs) copolyesters were synthesized by using transesterification and melt polycondensation methods from dimethyl furandicarboxylate, dimethyl succinate, dimethyl itaconate, and 1,5-pentanediol. Dimethyl itaconate was incorporated to provide the cross-linkable reaction sites. Four kinds of monomers were employed to regulate the glass transition temperature and suppress crystallization. Silica/PPeSIF nanocomposites exhibited good mechanical properties, such as an ultimate tensile strength of 17.2 MPa and an elongation at break of 253%. This elastomer displayed outstanding gas barrier properties comparable to those of butyl rubber, with an O2 permeability 13 times lower than that of natural rubber. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy tests demonstrated that furan moieties significantly reduced the free volume of PPeSIFs. This work provides a promising route for preparing a biobased elastomer with intrinsic high gas barrier properties.

Co-P covalent interaction strengthens electron relocation in Ce-O-Co for enhanced water oxidation via lattice oxygen mechanism

Hang Yue,Sichen Huo,Xinyu Wang,Mingyi Wang,Heyuan Sun,Yanjie Chen,Ying Dai,Mingyang Liu,Jinlong Zou

Due to restrictive linear relationship between intermediates in adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a higher overpotential must be overcome for conversion of *O to *OOH. Activating lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) can address the AEM’s challenges by facilitating O-O coupling. However, via LOM pathway, extracting electrons from metal-oxygen (M−O) bonds usually results in structural instability. Herein, we propose an effective method to stabilize LOM-catalysts by combining cerium dioxide with cobalt phosphide (CeO 2 /CoP heterostructure). CeO 2 acts as an electron buffer to retain/provide electrons at different stages, while CoP with strong Co-P covalency enhances structural/catalytic stability in strongly-alkaline conditions. CeO 2 /CoP exhibits an OER overpotential of only 225 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Initially, CeO 2 acquires electrons from CoP to accelerate surface reconstruction and form high-valence Co δ+ (CoOOH). Then, CoOOH acquires electrons from the 4 f -orbital of Ce through the Ce-O-Co interface, rather than from the M−O bond, thus ensuring OER stability. For water splitting, bifunctional CeO 2 /CoP-assembled electrolyzer requires a cell-voltage of only 1.54 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 and retains 89.5 % of its activity after 72 h of cycling. It highlights that leveraging electron-buffering metal species can enhance the LOM stability, thereby enabling its application in bifunctional electrocatalysis.

Research on photocatalytic performance and mechanism of nitrogen–sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots and C3N4 co-modified BiOBr

Liu Huadong,Du Kezhen,Sun Hao

In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (NSCQDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method, carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) was fired in a muffle furnace in an air atmosphere, and finally, the ternary heterostructure of NSCQDs, C 3 N 4 and bismuth oxide bromide (BiOBr) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method (NSCQDs/C 3 N 4 /BiOBr). The morphology of the catalyst was observed through SEM and TEM. The chemical bonds were analyzed by XPS and FT-IR to further confirm that NSCQDs and C 3 N 4 were successfully attached to BiOBr. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized catalysts was studied by degrading RhB under simulated light source. The experiment results showed that under optimal conditions, the degradation rate of RhB by NSCQDs/C 3 N 4 /BiOBr within 20 min was as high as 99.9%, which was much higher than that of pure BiOBr (33.5%). The degradation curve was combined with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model with a kinetic constant of 0.32578 min −1 , which was 17.7 times that of BiOBr (0.01837 min −1 ). Catalyst recycling tests showed that NSCQDs/C3N4/BiOBr had extremely high stability. The active species quenching test showed that \({\text{O}}_{2}^{ \cdot - }\) and 1 O 2 were the main active species during the photocatalytic process. The inhibition effect of NSCQDs and C 3 N 4 on BiOBr photogenerated carrier recombination was analyzed by photoluminescence and transient photocurrent tests. This study is expected to provide an attractive strategy for constructing efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Interfacial synergy between atomically dispersed Co and encapsulated Co nanoparticles on carbon-based catalyst for efficient hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Qi Gan,Jiajun Zhang,Yan Cao,Shuang Xu,Peng He,Huiquan Li,Renlong Liu,Liguo Wang

Non-noble metal-based catalysts are highly desired for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics. Here we reported a catalyst of Co 1 /Co n @NCNS prepared with raw materials for efficient hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB), in which the Co nanoparticle (Co NP ) was tightly coated in a nitrogen-doped graphite carbon shell, and the Co single atom (Co SA ) was uniformly anchored on graphite support. The catalyst achieved a conversion of NB for over 99% under mild conditions at 50 °C and 10 bar. The catalyst was able to consistently maintain over 90% conversion and 99% selectivity for 100 h, and exhibited outstanding catalytic activity and selectivity (>99%) towards the reduction of various nitroaromatics, even though for halogen-containing substrates. The superior catalytic performance resulted from the synergy between the internal Co NP and the surface Co SA on the nitrogen-doped carbon shells. Both Co NP and Co SA synergistically facilitated electron transfer to nitrogen atoms in the carbon framework, and rendered them catalytic activity during the hydrogenation.

Co/P co-doped bamboo-based woodceramics with a sandwich structure modified by carbon nanotube electrodeposition as supercapacitor electrodes

Le Gong,Rongxiang Zeng,Yiqing Shi,Minggong Yu,Xianchun Yu,Delin Sun

Exploring new electrode structures and co-doped composite biomass material electrodes is considered to be an effective way of developing cheap, efficient carbon-based supercapacitors. A bamboo-based sandwich-structured matrix was prepared from thin bamboo veneer and bamboo fiber by pretreatment with H 3 PO 4 and Co 2+ -catalyzed graphitization. The pore structure was modulated by hydrothermal activation with NaOH and electrodeposition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to obtain CNTs modified, Co/P co-doped sandwich-structured woodceramics electrode (CNT@Co/P). It not only has an obvious sandwich structure, but also retains the natural structural characteristics of bamboo. The specific capacitance of the resulting electrode (CNT@Co/P-20) is as high as 453.72F/g using 1 wt% of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CMWCNT) solution as the deposition electrolyte at a current density of 0.2 A/g for 20 min at room temperature. When the power density is 500 W/kg, the energy density reaches 21.3Wh /kg, showing a good electrochemical performance.

Enhanced double-exchange interactions enable the Co and Mn co-doped zinc ferrite rapid and efficient removal of tetracycline

Yuqiu Fan,Dawei Liu,Haipeng Wan,Xingyu Liu,Jun Wang,Kun Xiong

For rapid and efficient removal of tetracycline (TC), a new cobalt (Co) and manganese (Mn) co-doped zinc ferrite (CoMnZFO) photoanode was synthesized in this study. Compared to the pure zinc ferrite (ZFO), CoMnZFO exhibited stronger enhanced light harvesting ability and a narrower band gap. Although there were oxygen vacancies in both CoMnZFO and ZFO lattices, CoMnZFO possessed more double-exchange interaction pathways in comparison with ZFO. Besides the Fe 2 + /Fe 3+ pathway, CoMnZFO also had the Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ pathway, which facilitates the transfer of photogenerated electrons ( e - ) and holes (h + ), thereafter enabling CoMnZFO better photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity. Since CoMnZFO had a significantly smaller Helmholtz layer resistance than ZFO, it enhanced TC adsorption onto its surface. Exposed to simulated solar light for 12 min, CoMnZFO was able to make the complete degradation of TC (20 mg/L, 70 mL) when a voltage of 0.2 V was applied, while ZFO only achieved a TC degradation rate of 50.85 ± 5.77 % under the same condition. In addition, CoMnZFO achieved a TC mineralization rate of 41.89 ± 1.72 %, while that of ZFO was 13.87 ± 1.94 %. Furthermore, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) method was applied to evaluate the ecotoxicological impact of the degradation products. The results demonstrate that the toxicity and mutagenicity of TC were weakened after experiencing the PEC treatment of CoMnZFO. Overall, this work offers a rapid and efficient way for PEC removal of TC-contaminated wastewater.

Molten Salts Etching Driven In-Situ Construction of MOF-Derived Co/Co–N–C/MXene toward Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

Yingrui Wang,Guanzheng Yang,Ming Chao,Jiaqing Zhao,Wen-tao Wang,Jin Yan,Qunying Wang,Ruizhi Yang

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a critical reaction in many renewable energy conversion and storage systems, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. High price, poor stability, and scarcity of Pt-based electrocatalysts, which are commonly used for ORR, limit the development of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Transition-metal and nitrogen codoped carbons (M–N–C) are deemed as promising alternative electrocatalysts for ORR. Nevertheless, achieving sufficient ORR activity with M–N–C still faces great challenges. Here, cobalt (Co)-decorated Co–N–C coupled with MXene (Co/Co–N–C@MS-MXene) catalysts are successfully prepared via an in-situ construction of ZIF-derived Co–N–C at the surface of MXene etched by a Lewis acid molten salt. The as-synthesized Co/Co–N–C@MS-MXene delivers a superior ORR catalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.75 V vs RHE and a diffusion-limiting current density of 5.1 mA cm–2. A 4-electron transferring process and high stability are enabled. The excellent ORR performance can be attributed to the highly active Co-decorated Co–N–C and strong electronic coupling of Ti–O–Co between Co–N–C and MS-MXene, which promote the catalytic kinetics of ORR. This work demonstrates a universal, efficient, and green approach for the in-situ construction of active sites on MXene substrates.

Remarkable Strain Hardening, Elasticity, and Gas Barrier of Biobased Poly(1,5-pentylene itaconate-co-furanoate-co-ε-caprolactone) Elastomers

Yangsong Chen,Dekang You,Xin Pan,Youfang Zhang,Zhao Wang,Dean Shi,Weiwei Lei,Liqun Zhang,Robert K. Y. Li

The widespread utilization of elastomers causes severe environmental and health concerns, prompting the research of biobased high-performance elastomers for a sustainable elastomer industry. This work attempts to develop biobased elastomers with comparable properties with high-performance petroleum-based synthetic rubbers and natural rubber. A series of poly(1,5-pentylene itaconate-co-furanoate-co-ε-caprolactone) (PPeIFCL) polyesters were synthesized by using transesterification and melt polycondensation methods utilizing biomass-derived substituents. PPeIFCL polyesters were characterized in terms of chemical structure and thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties. PPeIFCL polyester macromolecule chains with an inherent angle of 129.4° between the carboxylates on furan moieties, combining the asymmetric poly(ε-caprolactone) diol oligomer and “odd–even” effect of the 1,5-pentanediol structure, provided adequate chain entanglements and strengthened their tensile strength and elasticity as validated by the mechanical tests and low-field NMR. Furthermore, PPeIFCLs exhibited impressive gas barrier properties compared to petrobased butyl rubber.

A gas chromatographic stationary of homochiral metal-peptide framework material and its applications

Li Lang,Xie Shengming,Zhang Junhui,Chen Ling,Zhu Pengjing,Yuan Liming

Homochiral metal-organic frameworks(HMOFs) have special properties, such as high surface area, fasci-nating structures and excellent chemical and thermal stability and they have broad application prospects. In this work, we reported the use of HMOF Co- L -GG( L -GG, dipeptide H-Gly- L -Glu) as the stationary phase for separating race-mates in gas chromatography. Co- L -GG coated fused silica capillary column(10 m×250 μm i.d.) was prepared via a dynamic coating method. Thirty racemates belonging to different classes of organic compounds were resolved in-cluding halohydrocarbons, ketones, esters, ethers, organic acids, epoxyalkanes, alcohols and sulfoxides. When com-pared with the previously reported chiral MOFs-coated capillary columns, the Co- L -GG coated column exhibited broader chiral resolution ability towards chiral compounds.

Enhancing the Antifouling Properties of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) Membrane through a Novel Blending and Surface-Grafting Modification Approach

Shusu Shen,Yi Hao,Yiyuan Zhang,Ganwei Zhang,Xiaoji Zhou,R. B. Bai

In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was modified through a novel approach by first blending an active component (poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene), P(VDF-co-CTFE)) with the PVDF base material, followed by surface grafting of the membrane on the active component to obtain a triblock copolymer functional structure. The prepared membranes were characterized by various analyses, including Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscope, and filtration tests. It was found that the modified membrane surface showed a much better hydrophilicity (water contact angle of 67.3°) and oleophobicity (oil contact angle of 129.7°). The modification reduced the average surface pore size (from 0.1495 to 0.1072 μm) and thus lowered the pure water flux (from 364.0 to 224.6 L m–2 h–1 at 0.10 MPa of transmembrane pressure), but significantly increased the relative flux recovery (RFR) and the retention efficiency of the modified membrane during the filtration of bovine serum albumin solution and oil/water emulsion. For example, the modified membranes showed 98.6% oil retention (at feed concentration of 0.4 g L–1), 92.7% RFR by simple water flushing after filtration, and a consistently high oil removal of 96% or above during a five-cycle-continuous filtration test, as compared to 30.4% oil retention and 51.8% RFR for unmodified PVDF/P(VDF-co-CTFE) blend membrane.

Isotype Heterojunction-Boosted CO2 Photoreduction to CO

Ban Chaogang,Duan Youyu,Wang Yang,Ma Jiangping,Wang Kaiwen,Meng Jiazhi,Liu Xue,Wang Cong,Han Xiaodong,Cao Guozhong,Gan Liyong,Zhou Xiaoyuan

The g-C 3 N 4 isotype heterojunction was synthesized for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, which exhibits an impressive activity and outstanding stability. The isotype heterojunction presents more favorable charge separation and transfer performance than the single components. The enhanced photogenerated charge dynamics in isotype heterojunction facilitates the production of key intermediates and thus the whole reaction kinetics.
