Solubility and stability of diamond in cobalt under 5 GPa

Yi Tian,Junpu Wang,Jiawei Zhang,Shixue Guan,Lu Zhang,Binbin Wu,Yuzhu Su,Mengyang Huang,Li Zhou,Duanwei He

The stability and solubility of diamond in cobalt at a pressure of 5 GPa was investigated. At temperatures ranging from 1000 °C and 1350 °C, diamond can be dissolved in cobalt without graphitization . Meanwhile, the solubility of single diamond crystals in cobalt was measured at 5 GPa and temperatures of up to 1300 °C through weight analysis, and it was found to increase with the increase in temperature. The morphological changes of the diamond crystals after high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) treatments were observed using a scanning electron microscope . The resulting quantitative data and morphology analysis enabled the construction of a scheme for the morphological evolution of diamond crystals during their dissolution in cobalt at HPHT. The diamond formation process in cobalt solvent is discussed in relation to the dynamic equilibrium.

Impact of toluene poisoning on MnCe/HZSM-5 SCR catalyst

Peng Lu,Lyumeng Ye,Xianhui Yan,Ping Fang,Xiongbo Chen,Dingsheng Chen,Chaoping Cen

Increasing attentions have been drawn towards the simultaneous removal of toluene in current existing NH 3 -SCR unit. The development of dual-functional catalysts and the understanding of impact induced by toluene addition are momentous but lacking. Herein, a well-reported MnO x -CeO 2 catalyst was chosen as active phase to assess the role of HZSM-5 in this simultaneous removal process. HZSM-5 was found to supply more acid sites especially Lewis acid on the MnO x -CeO 2 catalyst. A MnCe/HZSM-5 catalyst with a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 molar ratio of 25 delivered a broad active temperature window of 200–400 °C with NO conversion > 80% and possessed a stable N 2 selectivity > 96% in NH 3 -SCR reaction. Also, it was able to maintain above 60% of toluene conversion in the range of 200–400 °C. More Lewis acid sites, together with abundant Mn 4+ , Ce 3+ and active surface oxygen that formed via the interaction between Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ (Mn 3+ + Ce 4+ ↔ Mn 4+ + Ce 3+ ), contributed to the superior catalytic performance of MnCe/HZSM-5 with lower SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio. A reversible catalyst deactivation in NH 3 -SCR induced by toluene was found. Toluene was prone to reacting with NH 3 forming nitriles, which infringed the active sites and decreased the available coordinated NH 3 on Lewis acid sites. In addition, the suppression of NO oxidation to NO 2 that decreasing the percentage of “fast SCR” process, and the inhibition of NH 3 activation to NH 2 species also contributed to the lower SCR activity in the presence of toluene over MnCe/HZSM-5.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethyfurfural reactions promoted by CuZn catalysts

Jiahong Zhang,Jiaqi Xu,Xinrou Huang,Qiao Zhang,Guangxing Yang,Zhiting Liu,Feng Peng

Electrochemical hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a particularly important and environmentally friendly route to achieve sustainable high-value chemicals and biomass-based fuels. Herein, electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) reaction of HMF using CuZn catalysts prepared by electrochemical deposition method was declared. The electrochemical hydrogenation of HMF to 5-methyfurfuryl alcohol (MFA) in alkaline aqueous medium has an excellent yield and faraday efficiency, with a maximum of 0.086 mmol cm −2  h −1 , which has not been reported before. The selectivity and efficiency of ECH reaction were affected by electrolyte pH. The results indicated that electrocatalytic hydrogenation were not simply related to the type of electrode catalyst, but also sensitive to electrolytes, which can give important guidance for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of biomass-based platform molecules.

Mesoporous ZrO2 Nanopowder Catalysts for the Synthesis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Yumeng Zhou,Lijing Zhang,Shengyang Tao

Balancing the large surface area and high crystallinity of heterogeneous metal oxide catalysts is quite tricky. They are usually needed together to get both a large amount of active catalytic sites and high thermal stability. In this paper, the preparation of porous sulfate ZrO2 as solid acid catalysts is reported. The monolithic porous SiO2 created confined spaces in which porous ZrO2 was synthesized in it. The ZrO2 has excellent porous structure in which the specific surface area reaches 277 m2 g–1 and has good crystallinity. At the same time, they have high acid site loading (2.57 mmol g–1) upon sulfation. The sulfonic ZrO2 exhibits excellent catalytic performance when considering the dehydration of 5-HMF from d-fructose. The yield of 5-HMF is 87% for 60 min at 120 °C. Thus, this solid acid catalyst was a potential candidate for heterogeneous catalysis and biomass quick conversion.

Functionalized silica nanoparticles for conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Zhenzhen Yang,Wei Qi,Renliang Huang,Jie Fang,Rongxin Su,Zhimin He

Functionalized silica nanoparticles with strong acidity and different hydrophobicity were successfully synthesized by an alkali co-condensation method. The structure of the hydrophobic solid acids were characterized, and the catalytic properties were investigated in fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Experiment results indicated that catalyst hydrophobicity has a positive influence on both 5-HMF yield and selectivity. The highest yield of 5-HMF (87%) with full conversion of fructose was obtained when the most hydrophobic solid acid (SiNP-SO 3 H-C 16 ) was used as the catalyst. The reason can be interpreted as the hydrophobic groups in the silica nanoparticles can effectively isolate SO 3 H groups with water molecules in the reaction system, and thus hinder the rehydration of 5-HMF, which is the main side-reaction in 5-HMF formation. Other important reaction parameters such as reaction medium, temperature, time and catalyst loading were also studied for fructose dehydration. Recycling and control experiments demonstrated the good reusability and stability of the functionalized silica nanoparticles. Furthermore, inulin was also used as a feedstock for 5-HMF production and gave a high 5-HMF yield of 65% in the catalysis of a moderate hydrophobic silica nanoparticle.

Fe-La-Ce-ZSM-5 Zeolite for Adsorbing Congo Red

Jie Yang,Zhengkun Cai,Dong Li

In this experiment, ZSM-5 molecular sieves are prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and modified by impregnation with Fe, La, and Ce loading. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photon-electron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy show that Fe, La, and Ce elements are successfully loaded onto the surface of the material, and the surface area of Fe-La-Ce-ZSM-5 is 241.66 m 2 g −1 . A systematic study on the adsorption of Congo red solution is carried out using Fe-La-Ce-ZSM-5 molecular sieves and it is found through the adsorption data that the adsorption process is more in line with Langmuir and the proposed second-order kinetic model, and the theoretical saturated adsorption capacity is 2669.19 mg g −1 . The adsorption process is recycled four times and still has more than 60 % removal performance for high-concentration Congo red solution. The results of this experiment show that Fe-La-Ce-ZSM-5 molecular sieves show excellent removal performance for Congo red dye in wastewater.

Hydrolysis of levoglucosan to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in a biphasic system

Guangchuan Tang,Xin Huang,Hui Qin,Chuan Ma,Yunlin Shao,Zhongqing Yang,Changlei Qin,Jingyu Ran

Levoglucosan (LGA), as the main primary anhydrosugar of cellulose pyrolysis , is of great significance for future value-added chemicals production. In this study, effective conversion of LGA to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was investigated in a NaCl–H 2 O/acetone biphasic system over sulfonated resin and AlCl 3 . The results show that the biphasic system could efficiently inhibit the overreaction of HMF compared with pure water, leading to a significant enhancement of HMF production. HMF was obtained with the highest yield of 68.5 % at 96.5 % of LGA conversion at the optimized conditions. The use of cellobiose as substrate produced 61 % of HMF while LGA-rich bio-oil led to a sharp decease of HMF yield to 33 %. Through the respective experiments using LGA, glucose and fructose as the substrates, the reaction network was constructed for kinetic analysis, and satisfactory fitting results are observed in agreement with the experimental results, providing the best conditions for producing glucose and HMF, respectively. In addition, the mechanism of LGA conversion to HMF was calculated by DFT, which needs to overcome the highest free energy barrier of 121 kJ/mol.

Preparation, modification, characterization, and stability evaluation of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate liposomes

Ziyi Meng,Xu Yan,Nima Azarakhsh,Hanying Duan,Hosahalli S. Ramaswamy,Chao Wang

As an essential B vitamin, folate participates in one‑carbon metabolism. The 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) avoids the drawbacks associated with folic acid and native folylpolyglutamate folate in food, thereby emerging as a superior alternative to folate supplement. To enhance the stability and digestibility of 5-MTHF, nanoliposome (NL) was modified using a layer-by-layer self-assembly method with chitosan (CH) and pectin (P). Chitosan–nanoliposome (CH–NL) and pectin–chitosan–nanoliposome (P–CH–NL) were created, each featuring a core–shell structure. P–CH–NL achieved an encapsulation efficiency of 64.62 %, loading efficiency of 1.05 mg/g, and particle size of 285.86 nm. It exhibited better physical stability and 5-MTHF retention (>80 %) under various conditions, including salt and pH variations, as well as oxidative, thermal, fermentation, and UV stress. During in vitro digestion, P–CH–NL protected 5-MTHF until it was released into the small intestine. This study highlighted the application prospects of multilayer liposome-loaded 5-MTHF as a stable, highly digestible folate supplement.

Separation and purification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by metal‒organic frameworks

Lei Wang,Hailong He,Lulu Deng,Yuhao Luo,Qiang Liu,Xiaoying Zhu

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important sugar-based platform chemical that can be produced from fructose by acid-catalyzed dehydration. However, the efficient removal of by-products formic acid (FA), levulinic acid (LA) and residual fructose to obtain high purity HMF remains a challenge, especially the separation of LA and HMF. Herein, by introducing coordination interaction, we effectively separated HMF from impurities. MOF-808 selectively adsorbed the impurity components with high adsorption capacity and selectivity factor for Fru (238 mg/gads, 43.8), FA (174 mg/gads, 53.5), and LA (325 mg/gads, 43.8). Moreover, the adsorption kinetic constants for MOF-808 on FA and LA could reach remarkably high values of 58.0 h-1 and 25.9 h-1, respectively. The efficient adsorption separation performance of MOF-808 is attributed to its abundant unsaturated paired sites and hard Lewis acidity. Additionally, in practical column separation, MOF-808 showed outstanding separation performance and cycling stability. This study indicates coordination interactions are effective for the separation and purification of HMF.

Ultrafast and mesoporogen-free synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites

Feng Ye,Shuanshi Fan,Yanhong Wang,Xuemei Lang,Yihui Lv,Weibo Chen,Gang Li

The facile synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites without mesoporogens is highly desirable for industrial applications. In this study, hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites with abundant mesopores and a nearly single-crystalline structure were rapidly synthesized in a mesoporogen-free system. Under conventional heating, the synthesis time was significantly reduced to just 15 min, significantly improving production efficiency. The key to this ultrafast process was the use of a tubular reactor, combined with the strategic selection of silicon and aluminum sources.

Synthesis of ZSM-5 Zeolite Nanosheets Using Fluorine-Free Additives

Jiaxing Zhang,Ajuan Zhou,Fang Hao,Kexin Yang,Yiren Yu,Yucai Qin,Xiongfu Zhang,Limin Ren,Anfeng Zhang,Guanghui Zhang,Chunshan Song,Xinwen Guo

The green synthesis of b-axis-oriented ZSM-5 nanosheets (NSs) is essential for facilitating their industrial production. Here, a set of cost-effective and eco-friendly additives is introduced for the tailored synthesis of thin ZSM-5 NSs with a b-axis thickness of 40 nm with the assistance of small seeds. Through a comprehensive exploration of synthesis methods and electron microscopy analysis, this work elucidates the pivotal roles of seeds and additives in controlling the crystal size and steering anisotropic growth kinetics during the crystallization process. The shortened straight channels of the thin ZSM-5 NSs along the b-axis significantly enhance the rapid transport of molecules within the micropores, thus manifesting a distinct catalytic advantage in the alkylation of benzene with methanol and methanol-to-propylene (MTP) conversion. Notably, the utilization of fluorine-free additives in the synthesis of thin ZSM-5 NSs marks an important step forward in zeolite materials, bridging the gap between laboratory experimentation and industrial scale-up.
