Reversible control of the magnetization of Fe3O4 via lithium ions

Guodong Wei,Lin Wei,Dong Wang,Yufeng Tian,Yanxue Chen,Shishen Yan,Liangmo Mei,Jun Jiao

In this report, a reversible control of Fe3O4 saturated magnetization by Li ions is demonstrated. A miniature Li ion battery (LIB) was assembled using a Fe3O4 nanoparticle layer as the active cathode. A stable magnetism modulation is realized by a nondestructive electrochemical process in which the lithium insertion results in a valence change and partial redistribution of Fe cations in the crystal structure. The relation between the discharge voltage and the chemical phases were studied by ex situ X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurement. In a suitable discharge potential range, a reversible control of Fe3O4 saturated magnetization was obtained without structural damage to the magnetic electrode. The experimental results indicate by further optimizing the LIB's performance, a large reversible change in magnetization could be realized at room temperature, suggesting the potential for future practical applications.

Graphene oxide coated Fe3O4@mSiO2 NPs for magnetic controlled bioimaging

Aihua Li,Hongjing Ma,Jingquan Liu

A novel GO coated porous magnetic NPs (Fe3O4@mSiO2@GO) for bioimaging was synthesized. First, Fe3O4 magnetic NPs were prepared through a solvothermal reaction. Second, through a surfactant-templating approach with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template, a mesostructured CTAB/SiO2 composite was deposited on Fe3O4 NPs surfaces. Third, CTAB templates were removed to form a mesoporous SiO2 shell, resulting in mesoporous magnetic (Fe3O4@mSiO2) NPs. Forth, the magnetic NPs surfaces were functionalized with amino groups by (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). Finally, the dye rhodamine B (RB) was loaded inside porous magnetic NPs, and the magnetic NPs surfaces were then wrapped with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. SEM analysis revealed that GO sheets have been successfully coated on magnetic NPs surfaces. The hysteresis loops analysis indicated that these magnetic NPs still retained strongly magnetic property. Furthermore, Fe3O4@mSiO2@GO NPs could efficiently protect the loaded dye from releasing. In addition, MTT assay revealed that the RB loaded Fe3O4@mSiO2@GO NPs exhibited insignificant cytotoxicity at moderate concentrations and the RB loaded Fe3O4@mSiO2@GO NPs could undergo target-directed move under the action of a magnetic field. The noncytotoxic magnetic hybrids presented significant potential for applications in cell imaging.

Robust glucose oxidase with a Fe3O4@C-silica nanohybrid structure

Yuling Yang,Genxing Zhu,Guangchuan Wang,Yali Li,Ruikang Tang

Biomolecules, especially enzymes, usually have poor thermal and operational stability as well as limited reuse cycles, which greatly limit their industrial practices. Inspired by the biomineralization strategy evolved by natural organisms, we suggest nanohybrid enzyme formulation by in situ encapsulating enzyme loaded functional Fe3O4@C nanoparticles with silica. By using glucose oxidase (GOD) as an example, we demonstrate that the obtained enzyme-material hybrids are featured by their significantly enhanced operational and thermal stabilities, which exhibit a relatively steady catalytic ability in a board range of 25 °C to 65 °C. Even after 4 h of incubation at 55 °C, the GOD-material composites still retain 77% of their initial activity while the native ones only retain 30%. Besides, the nanohybrids show excellent reusability because the magnetic character of the integrated Fe3O4 particles facilitates the enzyme separation and recycle. This attempt provides a valuable approach for biological improvement by using functional materials.

Recyclable Fe3O4@CNT nanoparticles for high-efficiency solar vapor generation

Lei Shi,Yurong He,Yimin Huang,Baocheng Jiang

Solar power, as an important source of renewable energy during the recent years, holds a great potential to produce vapor. Solar-assisted evaporation systems usually rely on the concentration of nanofluids and the intensity of solar illumination. However, the nanofluids used in these systems can cause secondary pollution. These issues severely limit large-scale application of the solar evaporation technology. In this study, we developed a solar thermal evaporation system based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @CNT), which could be separated from water under the action of a magnetic force. The two components (with different ratios) of these Fe 3 O 4 @CNT differed in their magnetic and thermal properties. A high evaporation efficiency (60.3%) was obtained with a 0.5   g/L Fe 3 O 4 @CNT nanofluid under a solar illumination power of 10   sun (1   sun   =   1   kW·m −2 ), which was achieved by heating the nanofluid locally rather than by increasing the temperature in bulk. A thermal receiver efficiency of 88.7% was obtained with a 0.5   g/L Fe 3 O 4 @CNT nanofluid under a solar illumination power of 1   sun achieved by a bulk temperature increase. The Fe 3 O 4 @CNT nanoparticles could be separated from water at a rate faster than that of the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The recovery rate of the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and Fe 3 O 4 @CNT ranged from 97.9% to 98.7%. The Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles in Fe 3 O 4 @CNT enhance their ability to absorb the solar energy, thus making it higher than that of CNTs. The recovery rate and efficiency could be controlled by adjusting the magnetic field strength and the ratio of Fe 3 O 4 and CNTs. Thus, this system study provides an approach to not only significantly reduce the material consumption in the design of solar evaporators, but also to realize broad solar energy applications such as seawater desalination and vapor generation.

Synthesis of amine-functionalized Fe3O4@C nanoparticles for lipase immobilization

Zhiming Chen,Wenhui Xu,Li Jin,Juanjuan Zha,Tingxian Tao,Ying Lin,Zhilin Wang

Amine-functionalized Fe3O4@C nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized on a large scale via a solvothermal route. The morphology, structure and properties of the Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were investigated through different analytical tools. Due to the magnetic nature and the presence of amine-functionalized groups, the as-prepared Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were employed as magnetic carriers for lipase immobilization. Our results indicate that the lipase loading amount on the magnetic Fe3O4@C nanoparticles was about 115.6 mg of protein per g. The factors related to the catalytic activity of the immobilized lipase on the magnetic carriers were systematically investigated. Hydrolytic activity tests reveal that the immobilized lipase retains about 93% of the free enzyme activity. It should be mentioned that the thermal stability of the immobilized lipase was strikingly higher than that of the free lipase. Most importantly, the immobilized lipase retained more than 68% of its initial activities after 10 times reuse. It is hoped that the amine-functionalized Fe3O4@C nanoparticles may find an application in biotechnology and catalysis.

Conjugating folate on superparamagnetic Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles using click chemistry

Xiaofang Shen,Zhaoqiang Ge,Yuehong Pang

Gold-coated magnetic core@shell nanoparticles , which exhibit magneto-optical properties, not only enhance the chemical stability of core and biocompatibility of surface, but also provide a combination of multimodal imaging and therapeutics. The conjugation of these tiny nanoparticles with specific biomolecules allows researchers to target the desired location. In this paper, superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles were synthesized and functionalized with the azide group on the surface by formation of self-assembled monolayers. Folate (FA) molecules, non-immunogenic target ligands for cancer cells, are conjugated with alkyne and then immobilized on the azide-terminated Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanoparticles through copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (click reaction). Myelogenous leukemia K562 cells were used as a folate receptor (FR) model, which can be targeted and extracted by magnetic field after interaction with the Fe 3 O 4 @Au–FA nanoparticles.

One step synthesis of magnetic composite Fe3O4/Cu-BTC/GO

Ling Li,Yana Liu,Keke Sun,Yuqi He,Li Liu

Magnetic composites Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC and Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC/GO were one-step synthesized and characterized. It was found that GO can help Fe 3 O 4 encapsulated more homogeneously. Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC particles were “sea-island” structure, while Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC/GO particles were uniform spherical structure with a bigger size. It can be explained by the excellent hydrophilicity of GO. IBU loading and IBU release of different particles were compared. Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC/GO was found to have larger IBU loading and better IBU release. It was concluded that addition of GO changed the adsorption mechanic for IBU, which strengthened the IBU loading and led to the lower IBU release.

Elucidating the Bioinspired Synthesis Process of Magnetosomes-Like Fe3O4 Nanoparticles

Yu Mao,Jizi Liu,Jianfei Sun,Yifan Zhao,Yuan An,Lihe Wu,Haikao Feng,Bo Chen,Ruipeng Chen,Kai Zhang,Yan Li,Xiao Huang,Ning Gu

Iron oxide nanoparticles are a kind of important biomedical nanomaterials. Although their industrial-scale production can be realized by the conventional coprecipitation method, the controllability of their size and morphology remains a huge challenge. In this study, a kind of synthetic polypeptide Mms6-28 which mimics the magnetosome protein Mms6 is used for the bioinspired synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs). Magnetosomes-like Fe 3 O 4 NPs with uniform size, cubooctahedral shape, and smooth crystal surfaces are synthesized via a partial oxidation process. The Mms6-28 polypeptides play an important role by binding with iron ions and forming nucleation templates and are also preferably attached to the [100] and [111] crystal planes to induce the formation of uniform cubooctahedral Fe 3 O 4 NPs. The continuous release and oxidation of Fe 2+ from pre-formed Fe 2+ -rich precursors within the Mms6-28-based template make the reaction much controllable. The study affords new insights into the bioinspired- and bio-synthesis mechanism of magnetosomes.

Degradation of TCH by Fe3O4/B4C catalyzed heterogeneous Fenton oxidation

Hu Zhou,Miao Li,Liqin Chen,Huipeng Cheng,Dan Li,Changxin Tang,Jiren Yuan,Feigao Xu

In this work, Fe 3 O 4 /B 4 C (FeB) composites were successfully prepared by a facile co-precipitation process. FeB composites were characterized using XRD , FTIR, N 2 adsorption-desorption, XPS, etc techniques and then used as heterogeneous Fenton catalysts to activate green oxidant (H 2 O 2 ) for the degradation of TCH. The removal efficiency of TCH by FeB composites was explored including different parameters of Fe 3 O 4 loading on B 4 C, catalyst dosage, initial solution pH, H 2 O 2 dosage, and reaction temperature. The highest photo-Fenton catalytic efficiency was obtained for the composites with a mass ratio of Fe 3 O 4 to B 4 C of 1:0.75. At this time, the removal efficiency of Fe 3 O 4 /B 4 C was 2 times and 391 times that of the parent Fe 3 O 4 and B 4 C, respectively, and B 4 C can effectively improve the efficiency of the Fenton cycle. h + , e - , and ·OH were mainly responsible for the degradation of TCH by Fe 1 B 0.75 composites. After repeated use for five times, the removal efficiency of the catalyst was reduced by only 8.0%. The disparity in work functions by density functional theory calculations confirmed the formation of an internal electric field at the Fe 3 O 4 /B 4 C composites interface, which contributed the transfer of charge carriers between the Fe 3 O 4 and B 4 C. Moreover, the FeB composite showed a high stability, indicating that FeB composites may be a promising heterogeneous catalyst .

Fe3O4 nanomotors loaded with siRNA are used for tumor therapy

Jiaoyu Ren,Yanyan Cuan

Excessive iron ion accumulation in cells can trigger apoptosis; however, the balance of iron ions in cells minimizes the effect of excessive iron accumulation. Here, we report a biocompatible nanomotor that reduces the ability of cells to clear iron ions using loaded siRNA. First, catalase and polydopamine were loaded onto Fe 3 O 4 particles by layer-by-layer self-assembly technology to endow the particles with a self-propulsion ability. A nanomotor (NP-siRNA) loaded with siRNA was then prepared by electrostatic action. Nanoparticles (NP) can achieve self-actuation in an aqueous solution with a magnetic field and H 2 O 2 and have good movement ability in water, PBS, and FBS solutions, resulting in greater contact with tumor cells. The results show that the nanomotor has good in vivo and in vitro anti-tumor effects, and good biocompatibility.

MXene@Fe3O4/PDA nanosheets with photothermal-magnetically coupled antibacterial properties

Jie Jin,Shanshan Wu,Xue Fang,Haoran Li,Jing Wang,Shouhu Xuan,Weili Kong,Di Wang,Xia Chen,Ken Cham-Fai Leung,Qunling Fang,Tianzhi Luo

Pathogenic infections pose a major threat to global public health, and what's worse is that the bacteria in infected places often exist in the form of biofilms, making it impossible for antibiotics and other contact bactericidal substances to penetrate their interior. Therefore, looking for an effective method with synergistic antibacterial and biofilm removal properties is a key challenge. A kind of magnetic MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA nanosheets with antibacterial properties of photothermal magnetic coupling are reported in this paper. Fe 3 O 4 was grown in situ on MXene nanosheets and then coated with a layer of polydopamine (PDA). MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA nanosheet (120 μg/mL) showed an over 95% inhibition rate against E. coli and S. aureus under 808 nm laser irradiation. In addition, peroxidase-like activity can produce reactive oxygen species. The photothermal antibacterial properties were further enhanced under the action of rotating magnetic field. The antibacterial activity was increased to close to 99.99%, and the removal effect of biofilm was also very good. The photothermal and magnetic coupled antibacterial effects can reduce the amount of MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA, thus it is expected to reduce the damage caused by overheating normal tissues and is safer than pure photothermal therapy.

PDDA-Assisted Synthesis of Magnetic Fluorescent Fe3O4@SiO2–CQD Composites

Lingwei Li,Huan Wang,Jixiang Fang

Magnetic fluorescent nanomaterials have broad application prospects as taggants in fields such as anticounterfeiting identification, suspicious object tracking, and potential fingerprint recognition in forensic medicine. It is a common method to synthesize magnetic fluorescent composite nanoparticles by preparing a shell on the surface of magnetic particles to load fluorescent materials. In this work, a magnetic fluorescence nanohybrid was synthesized by in situ encapsulation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) during the preparation of a SiO2 shell on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The traditional Stöber method was employed to synthesize the SiO2 shell. Meanwhile, CQDs were introduced into the hydrolysis process of tetraethyl orthosilicate. To address the issue of charge repulsion between the negatively charged hydrolysis intermediate of tetraethyl orthosilicate and the negatively charged CQDs, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) with positive charge was introduced in the synthesis process. The repulsive charges in the reaction system were balanced by poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), allowing for the successful encapsulation of CQDs in the SiO2 shell. The structure, morphology, and magnetic and fluorescence properties of the prepared Fe3O4@SiO2–CQDs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, a vibrating sample magnetometer, and a fluorescence spectrophotometer. The Fe3O4@SiO2–CQDs exhibited excellent magnetic and fluorescence properties, making them suitable for fluorescence labeling on various substrates and showing great potential in labeling, tracing, and fluorescence sensors.
