This work reported a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based microfluidic chip that detects mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in water with high sensitivity and good reproducibility. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are easily fabricated on a Si substrate using a thin, thermally treated Ag film. Cy3 functionalized single-stranded DNA (Cy3-ssDNA) serves as the probe, which is immobilized on the AgNPs (Cy3-ssDNA/AgNPs), generating a SERS-based sensing surface. Due to the strong interaction between thymine (T) bases and Hg 2+ , in the presence of these ions, the ssDNA forms a T-Hg 2+ -T hairpin structure, which enhances the SERS signal. This method exhibits a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10 −13 M. Furthermore, the proposed SERS chip demonstrates exceptional selectivity for mercury ions, as well as good reusability. The reusability of the SERS microfluidic chip was evaluated using the L-cysteine, which has a stronger affinity than T for Hg 2+ . By applying L-cysteine, the chip can be reused 10 times for the detection of Hg 2+ at concentrations as low as 1 × 10 −8 M. The method proposed in this study shows good sensitivity and holds good potential for application in the detection of Hg 2+ .

Multimodal optical detection are good candidates in accuracy improvement in complex food detection, without sacrificing rapidity and sensitivity. Herein, bifunctional gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/4-MBA/Cy/T) based on step-by-step modification of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, cysteamine, and thymine-1-acetic acid were fabricated for self-calibration ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis)/surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) dual-mode detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in milks. The bifunctional UV–Vis and SERS analysis can be attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of AuNPs. The stable aggregation structure of AuNPs/4-MBA/Cy/T-Hg 2+ can be formed in the presence of Hg 2+ based on specific recognition of thymine, simultaneously decreasing UV–Vis signals and increasing SERS signals, also verified by theoretical simulations. Under the optimum conditions, the AuNPs/4-MBA/Cy/T was applied to establish UV–Vis/SERS dual-mode method for Hg 2+ detection in various milk samples with satisfied analytical performance including rapidity, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and repeatability. It offers a novel strategy in developing of self-calibration dual-mode detection for food contaminants analysis.

In the present study, a dual recognition strategy for ultrasensitive detection of Hg 2+ was successfully developed for the first time based on aptamer functionalized sulfur quantum dots (Apt-SQDs). The developed Apt-SQDs not only retained the good fluorescence properties of quantum dots but also overcame the problem of poor selectivity of SQDs for heavy metal ions. This system used the dual recognition strategy, including the combination of S x 2− and Hg 2+ and T-Hg 2+ -T structures to excellently identify and capture Hg 2+ , and an ultrahigh sensitivity fluorescent aptasensor was fabricated. The fluorescent aptasensor had a good response to Hg 2+ at concentrations ranging of 10 −15 to 10 −7 M with an ultralow limit of detection of 0.3 fM, and the response to other metal ions was far less than that to Hg 2+ . It was successfully applied to detect Hg 2+ in nearby environmental water samples (tap water, lake water and river water) with a good recovery rate. Moreover, portable test papers that would be useful for Hg 2+ monitoring in environmental water were designed. The dual recognition strategy not only achieves ultrasensitive fluorescent detection of Hg 2+ but also provides a new insight into the further expansion of the application of SQDs.

In this study, a simple and rapid method was designed to synthesize N-doped silicon quantum dots (N-SiQDs) with a maximum excitation wavelength and maximum emission wavelength of 347 nm and 440 nm, respectively. The prepared N-SiQDs are colorless in aqueous solution with excellent dispersibility, and the fluorescence quantum yield is 28.8%. The fluorescence intensity of the N-SiQDs decreases rapidly within 30 s in response to Hg2+ to form the Hg2+–N-SiQD system. Under physiological conditions, glutathione can coordinate with Hg2+ in the Hg2+–N-SiQD system causing Hg2+ to detach from the surface of N-SiQDs, and the fluorescence of N-SiQDs is restored within 1 min. After optimization of the N-SiQD preparation conditions and the response conditions, the linear ranges for Hg2+ and glutathione detection are 0.1–4 μM and 0.1–5 μM with the detection limits of 24 nM and 55 nM, respectively. Besides, fluorescence imaging results indicate that the “on–off–on” Hg2+–N-SiQD fluorescent sensor can be successfully applied to the detection of biothiols in living cells.

A new approach for the detection of Hg2+ is reported based on color changes from which gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are surrounded by a layer of HgS quantum dots to form in situ Au@HgS core–shell nanostructures. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of the gold core was changed due to a shell layer of HgS formed on the surface of the Au NPs, which brings the colour change of the aqueous solution. Therefore, Hg2+ can be recognized by visualizing the colour change of the Au@HgS core–shell nanostructures, and can be detected quantitatively by measurement of the UV-vis spectra. Some effects on the detection of Hg2+ were investigated in detail. This method was used to detect Hg2+ with excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. In our method, the lowest detected concentrations for mercury ions were 5.0 × 10−6 M observed by the naked eye and 0.486 nM as measured by UV-vis spectra. At the range from 8.0 × 10−5 to 1.0 × 10−8 M of Hg2+, this method was shown to have a good linear relationship.

Accurate and sensitive detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) and thiram is essential for food safety monitoring and environmental protection. Here, an “on-off-on” fluorescent probe based on red-emitting carbon dots (CDs) was fabricated for sequential detection of Hg 2+ and thiram. The CDs exhibited red fluorescence at λ em = 676 nm with a narrow full width at half maximum of 25 nm. Upon exposure to Hg 2+ , the fluorescence was significantly quenched due to the static quenching mechanism, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 25 nM. Notably, upon the addition of thiram, the quenched fluorescence of CDs was recovered due to the strong chelation between thiram and Hg 2+ , thereby enabling sensitive detection of thiram with a LOD of 4.80 nM. The approach was successfully validated using real water samples spiked with Hg 2+ and thiram. The recovery rates were between 97.16 % and 113.83 %, with relative standard deviations below 9.11 %. This study presents a simple, eco-friendly, and effective approach for the sensitive screening of trace contaminants in complex matrices.

Rapid and accurate identification of heavy metals in food products is essential for ensuring food safety and public health. In this study, an electrochemical sensor based on nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon nanospheres encapsulating ultrasmall PtBi nanoparticles (PtBi-HPCNs) was developed to enhance preconcentration and electrochemical deposition. The HPCNs provide abundant adsorption sites and effective mass transfer channels for metal ion enrichment, while the PtBi nanoalloys act as highly active electrocatalytic centers for metal ion reduction. Investigation of adsorption behavior and reduction kinetics reveals an “adsorption-assisted in-situ electrocatalytic reduction” mechanism. Leveraging these structural and electronic properties, the sensor enables sensitive and selective detection of Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ with low detection limits of 0.253 nM and 0.381 nM, respectively, well below Chinese regulatory limits. When applied to actual food sample detection, satisfactory recoveries of 96.80–104.53% were obtained, demonstrating its potential for practical monitoring of trace heavy metal ions in food.

Mercury is one of the most dangerous heavy metals due to its extreme toxicity to both humans and the biosphere. In this work, an in-situ and ultrasensitive method for the detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg 2+ ) using the dark-field microspectroscopy-based localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) nanosensor is demonstrated. In our homemade high-throughput microfluidic chip, the fixed nanorods and the free small gold nanospheres combine to form the core-satellite structures with the help of T- Hg 2+ -T chemical coordination. Such a process results in a spectral red shift due to plasmonic coupling, which allows us to reach a picomolar detection limit and a linear response range from 10 pM to 10 µM. In addition, our LSPR nanosensor has excellent selectivity and no interference for the detection of Hg 2+ , which was evaluated by monitoring responses to different heavy metal ions (Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Cr 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cu 2+ ) and their mixed samples. Our sensor platform's effectiveness offers a practical method for detecting traces of Hg 2+ in real-life water samples.

This work reported an economical and sensitive fluorescence sensor for mercury (II) ions based on the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-mediated nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs). The NCDs, obtained by a solvothermal method, exhibit emission with low quantum yield (6%) that can be quenched by various ions such as Cu 2+ , Cr 6+ , Co 2+ , and Hg 2+ . After adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the two produced aggregation-induced fluorescence effect, coupled with electrostatic interaction , and the quantum yield increased to 32%. The spatial structure formed by CTAB/NCDs could selectively capture Hg 2+ and make interact with the surface groups of NCDs to cause fluorescence quenching. The fluorescence intensity and Hg 2+ concentration showed a linear response in the range of 0.15–1 mM and 0.16–10.24 μM (R 2 = 0.998), and the detection limit was 85.71 nM. The fluorescent sensor was used to determine Hg 2+ in environmental waters with satisfactory results.

Ratio fluorescence has attracted much attention because of its self-calibration properties. However, it is difficult to obtain suitable fluorescent materials with well-resolved signals simultaneously under one excitation. In this work, we report a different strategy, using MIL-68(In)-NH 2 as both the fluorescence element and the scattered light unit, and coupling the fluorescence and the scattered light to construct the fluorescence and scattered light ratio system. Based on the optical properties and the second-order scattering (SOS) of the material nanoparticles , the synthesized MIL-68(In)-NH 2 can be used to realize the ratio detection of Hg 2+ . Because the scattering intensity of small particle MIL-68(In)-NH 2 is weak, SOS is not obvious. When Hg 2+ is introduced the coordination reaction between the amino nitrogen atoms of MIL-68(In)-NH 2 and Hg 2+ make the particles larger, resulting in the decrease of fluorescence and the enhancement of SOS. As a result, a novel Hg 2+ ratiometric detection method is developed by using the dual signal responses of the fluorescence and scattering. Under the optimal conditions (pH = 6, reaction time 5 min, room temperature , and the maximum excitation wavelength 365 nm), the linear range of the method is 0–100 μM, and the detection limit is 5.8 nM (Ksv = 9.89 × 10 9 M −1 ). In addition, the probe is successfully used to evaluate Hg 2+ in actual water samples. Compared with the traditional method of recording only the fluorescence signal, the proposed fluorescence-scattering method provides a new strategy for the design of ratiometric sensors.

Divalent mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) is widely distributed in the ecological environment and harmful to the human body and the environment. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective ‘on–off-on’ electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptamer sensing method based on the dual signal amplification strategy of a self-enhanced luminophore and ECL resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) was developed to detect Hg 2+ . In detail, the first ‘switch-on’ state was obtained by the self-enhanced luminophore of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -doped silica nanoparticle-nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots ( [email protected] 2 -NGQDs) modified glassy carbon electrode, which significantly amplified the ECL intensity compared with the mixture of [email protected] 2 and NGQDs . Later, the ‘switch-off’ state was induced by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which acted the acceptor in the ECL-RET system between AuNPs and [email protected] 2 -NGQDs due to their good spectral overlap. This combination of the self-enhanced luminophore and ECL-RET provided a novel dual signal amplification strategy, which led to a high signal-to-noise ratio and high analysis sensitivity. Finally, upon the addition of Hg 2+ , the formation of a stable T-Hg 2+ -T structure induced the release of AuNPs from the sensing interface and halted the ECL-RET process, resulting in ECL signal recovery (the second ‘switch-on’ state). For the detection of Hg 2+ , the proposed ECL sensor exhibited a wide linear range from 1 × 10 −14 to 1 × 10 −6 M and a highly sensitive detection limit of 3.0 fM. Finally, the feasibility of the developed method in water sample analysis was investigated.
