Sialic acid (SA) is a well-known component of glycoproteins, which have applications in various functional processes on the cell’s surface. The colorimetric is a simpler and more convenient method for measuring SA due to its low-cost apparatus and visual signal changes. This work focused on the unpredictable interparticle crosslinking aggregation of the functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in complex media. We proposed a balance of the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO)-type aggregation and molecule-based interaction method to solve this problem. Here, we report a novel colorimetric assay for the determination of SA using 4-mercaptophenyl boronic acid (4-MPBA) as an analyte’s recognition molecule, and negative charge PEG400was used to repulsive the interparticle crosslinking. The proposed sensing platform shows a linear relationship between the ratio of the absorbance intensity (A525/A660) and concentration of SA from 0.05 to 8 mM (R2= 0.997) and a detection limit of 48 μM was observed. The novel gold-based colorimetric sensor is easy to fabricate, reproducible in its test performance and has been successfully applied for the detection of SA in biological and healthcare product samples. Keywords:colorimetric assay;gold nanoparticles;4-Mercaptophenyl boronic acid;polyethylene glycol 400;repulsive the interparticle crosslinking;sialic acid

The mechanical properties of HTPE/PEG interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) binders were systemically studied with molecular dynamics (MDs) simulations and experiments. In this study, an algorithm was used to construct the crosslinking interpenetrating polymer network models and then the mechanical behaviors of Hydroxyl-terminated polyethylene glycol-tetrahydrofuran co-polyether/poly ethylene glycol (HTPE/PEG) IPN models were analyzed at a molecular scale. Firstly, glass transition temperatures (Tg), mean square displacement (MSD) and mechanical properties of IPN crosslinked model simulations showed that better thermomechanical parameters appeared at low temperatures, which were in good agreement with the experimental methods, including dynamic mechanical analysis and uniaxial tensile. Then bond-length distribution was performed to verify the crosslinked structures between prepolymers and curing agents. FTIR-ATR spectra analysis of four IPN binder specimens also gave a convictive result to the special interpenetrating polymer network of polyether polyurethane binders. Cohesive energy density and friction-free volume explained how the micro-structures of IPN crosslinked models and the force of inter-molecule chains affected the mechanical behaviors of the HTPE/PEG polyurethane matrix. Lastly, the morphology of IPN binder specimen tensile fracture indicated the mechanism at different temperatures. These studies were helpful in understanding the mechanical properties of HTPE/PEG interpenetrating polymer network binders and provide molecular insight into mechanisms of mechanical behaviors, which would guide the property improvement of HTPE propellant.Keywords:HTPE/PEG;IPN;mechanical properties;molecular dynamic simulation;crosslinking structures

The PEG/salt aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is the most common ATPS, but its application is still limited due to the restricted polarity difference between the two phases and the poor enhancement effect of adjuvants on ATPS performance so far. Unlike the adjuvants used so far, calixarenes can bind ions and molecules via multiple noncovalent interactions. In the present study, a water-soluble calixarene, p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC[4]), was used for the first time as the adjuvant to improve the performance of the PEG 600/(NH4)2SO4 ATPS through multiple interactions. It is found that when the SC[4] and the SC[4]/imidazole ionic liquid ([Cnmim]Br) complex were used as the adjuvants, the formation of PEG 600/(NH4)2SO4 ATPS was enhanced, and the transfer of the extracts (including S-mandelic acid, L-tryptophan, and L-phenylalanine) into the PEG phase was promoted. Moreover, although the single [Cnmim]Br, a commonly used adjuvant, does not promote the migration of the target molecules into the polymer phase, the SC[4]/[Cnmim]Br complex is superior to SC[4] in enhancing the performance of the ATPS because the SC[4]/[Cnmim]Br aggregates enable more binding sites to combine with the extract. Besides, the partition coefficient of SC[4] in the PEG/trisodium citrate ATPS is much smaller than that in the PEG/(NH4)2SO4 ATPS, which is helpful for the recovery of extracts into the citrate phase.

Residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) are widely used in NMR for the investigation of protein structure and dynamics. However, commonly used RDC media ( e.g. , C 12 E 5 /Hexanol/H 2 O or PEG system, lipid bilayer or bicelle system) are unstable viscous liquids, making it challenging to obtain stable and homogeneous NMR samples by laborious manual operation. In this paper, we report a unique fishhook-shaped micromixer (FS-mixer) that enables fast and thorough mixing of high-viscosity PEG and bicelle media for RDC analysis. Numerical simulations and experimental characterizations proved that the micromixer could achieve a complete mixing of viscous liquids in 382.4 μs, improved significantly over current mixers. In compared to manually prepared RDC samples, the on-chip prepared samples have a better uniformity and alignment efficiency, and show more stable peak split in the 2 H spectrum. As a proof of concept, we prepared a RDC sample for INSM1 ZF1-2 protein by using this FS-mixer. The IPAP-HSQC spectra demonstrated that this strategy can efficiently prevent the generation of low resolution and distorted spectra, which could facilitate further refinement of the NMR structure. This micromixer-assisted sampling method greatly simplifies the procedure, increases the media uniformity and stability, and shortens the time in RDC analysis. We believe it could serve as a useful tool in RDC-based NMR analysis.

In this work, innovative hybrid poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) materials with strong luminescence were successfully synthesized by doping PET with silicon-linked poly(ethylene glycol)-PET copolymer nanostructures either with (Si-PEG-PET) or with (ETP@Si-PEG-PET) luminescent Eu 3+ -complexes. The chemical properties and nanostructures of the hybrid materials were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. PET composites ranging from 0.25 to 4 wt% silicon additive were prepared by the melt blending method. The crystal properties, mechanical properties, and fluorescence properties of the composites were systematically studied by differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffractometry, tensile testing, and fluorescence spectrometry. When the addition of Si-PEG-PET or ETP@Si-PEG-PET was 0.75 wt%, the relative crystallinity and maximum tensile strength increase substantially. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity of hybrid luminescent PET materials is the strongest at 0.75 wt% loading. ETP@Si-PEG-PET not only endows PET polyester with stronger fluorescence properties and mechanical properties but also acts as an effective nucleation additive for PET. Highlights Silicon-linked poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PEG-PET) nanostructures generate hybrid luminescent PET materials. ETP@Si-PEG-PET improves the crystallization rate and crystallinity of PET. The composite with 0.75% addition showed the best fluorescence performance. Three-dimensional-grid structure of ETP@Si-PEG-PET enhances the mechanical property of PET.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles loaded with polysaccharides are excellent drug-delivery carriers with high loading capacity and pH sensitivity. This study describes the one-step encapsulation of Dendrobium huoshanense polysaccharides (DHP) in ZIF-8. The resultant PEG6000/ZIF-8@DHP complex exhibited drug release properties in acidic microenvironments, possessed water solubility, demonstrated high drug loading capacity, and displayed effective encapsulation. The effects of PEG6000/ZIF-8@ DHP administration on immunoregulation, antioxidant activities, and resistance against Aeromonas veronii in channel catfish were assessed. The study revealed that the PEG6000/ZIF-8@DHP complex stimulated cellular proliferation and phagocytosis, while also inducing the production of cytokines and nitric oxide. Additionally, the complex exhibited improved antioxidant properties and increased serum lysozyme and alkaline phosphatase activities. PEG6000/ZIF-8@DHP exhibited efficacy in vivo against Aeromonas veronii infection. These results indicate that PEG6000/ZIF-8@DHP is an efficient immunostimulant and vaccine adjuvant for enhancing immunity in channel catfish.

Wound infection and poor wound healing are the major challenges of wound treatment. Antibiotic drug treatment is the effective way to inhibit wound infection. It is necessary to achieve sustained release of antibiotics to get a longer treatment for wound infection. The double network hydrogels based on liposome, polyethylene glycol (PEG), α- cyclodextrin (α-CD) and acrylamide (AM) were developed, in which liposome acts as amoxicillin repository. Because the drug would release from the multiple barriers including two cavities of liposome and α-CD, as well as polyethylene glycol -α- cyclodextrin/acrylamide (PEG-CD/AM) double network, the PEG-α-CD/AM/liposome @amoxicillin double network hydrogels could achieve sustained drug release. The drug release assay showed that the dressing could release amoxicillin continuously until 12 days, than that of 8th day for single-network hydrogel releasing. The antibacterial ratio of the hydrogel could reach above 80%. What’s more, the hydrogels present adjustable mechanical strength by changing the ratio of the components. The swelling ratio proved that the hydrogel had potential ability to absorb wound exudates. The cytotoxicity test of the hydrogels demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. These results indicated that this study can provide a new thought for antibacterial wound dressing and has a broad application prospect.

Radiotherapy occupies an essential position in curing and palliating a wide range of solid tumors based on DNA damage responses to eradicate cancer cells. However, the tumor microenvironment generally exhibits the characteristics of hypoxia and glutathione overexpression, which play a critical role in radioresistance, to prevent irreparable breaks to DNA and necrocytosis of cancer cells. Herein, polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized manganese ferrite nanoparticles (MnFe2O4-PEG) are designed to enable self-sufficiency of oxygen by continuously catalyzing the decomposition of endogenous hydrogen peroxide. Simultaneously, the nano-platform can consume GSH to reduce the loss of reactive oxygen species in radiotherapy and achieve better therapeutic effects at the cellular and animal levels. In addition, the MnFe2O4-PEG could act as an optimal T1- and T2-weighted contrast medium for tumor-specific magnetic resonance imaging. This work proposes a systematically administered radiosensitizer that can selectively reside in tumor sites via the enhanced permeability and retention effect to relieve hypoxia and reduce GSH concentration, combined with dual-mode magnetic resonance imaging, achieving precise and effective image-guided tumor therapy.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG)/poly Acrylic acid (PAA)/silica (SiO 2 ) composite phase change materials (PCMs) with strong shape stability were successfully synthesized by a simultaneous sol-gel reaction, and in situ free radical polymerization . The network structure, shape stability, phase change enthalpy , and thermostability of the prepared materials were characterized through FT-IR, DSC , TGA , and XRD . The synthesized PEG/PAA/SiO 2 composite PCMs with a semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) exhibited a high phase change enthalpy of 172.9 J/g and strong shape stability under 355 °C. The interaction between PEG and PAA/SiO 2 network was also discussed in this paper, as well as the relationship between the interaction, energy density , and shape stability. The prepared PEG/PAA/SiO 2 composite PCMs provided a novel method in preparing shape stable phase change materials.

An efficient shape-stabilized phase change material (PEG/CLMS) with improved thermal properties was prepared using carbon layer-modified mesoporous silica (CLMS) as the supporter of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The CLMS was fabricated based on dopamine biomimetic modification, which is facile, environmentally friendly and easy to use. The physical properties and chemical compatibility of PEG/CLMS were studied, and the results show that after the SBA-15 was modified by carbon layer, the phase change enthalpy of PEG/CLMS-b increased from 112.0 J/g to 129.9 J/g and the thermal conductivity increased from 0.34 W/(m·K) to 0.43 W/(m·K). Moreover, the PEG/CLMS-b had favourable thermostability and thermal reliability. The carbon layer modification method reported in this paper has great potential in practical applications for thermal energy storage. The thermal property improvement method developed in this study could also be used for shape-stabilized phase change materials (ssPCMs) prepared using other carriers such as diatomite and palygorskite. Therefore, a universal method was developed to improve the thermal properties of ssPCMs in this study. Graphical abstract

Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have been widely used in human health related products, such as food additives, cosmetics and even drug delivery, gene therapy or bioimaging. Recently, a first-in-human clinical trial based on polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified SiNPs had been approved by US FDA to trace melanoma. However, as a nano-based drug delivery system, its biocompatibility and vascular toxicity are still largely unknown. Thus, we synthesized the fluorescent SiNPs to explore the biocompatibility and vascular endothelial function, and compare different biological effects caused by PEG-modified and unmodified SiNPs in cells and zebrafish model. The characterizations of SiNPs and PEG-modified SiNPs were analyzed by TEM, SEM, AFM and DLS, which exhibited relatively good stable and dispersive. Compared with SiNPs, PEG-modified SiNPs had markedly reduced the inflammatory response and vascular damage in Tg (fli-1: EGFP) and Tg (mpo: GFP) transgenic zebrafish lines, respectively. Consistent with the in vivo results, the PEG-modified SiNPs had been found to significantly decline the levels of ROS, inflammatory cytokines and mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis in vascular endothelial cells compared to SiNPs, and the ROS scavenger NAC could effectively alleviate the above adverse effects induced by nanoparticles. Our results suggested that the PEG-modified SiNPs could become more safety via increasing the biocompatibility and decreasing cellular toxicities in living organisms.

A biodegradable brush-type copolymer PHF-g-(PCL-PEG) based on a cleavable polyacetal backbone and biodegradable side chain modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) was synthesized in this paper. This particular structure was directional to facilitate the formation of spherical or rod-shaped micelles. Flow cytometry showed that rod-shaped micelles displayed enhanced cellular uptake compared to spherical micelles. Rod-shaped micelles were selected to investigate their drug delivery abilities in detail. In vitro experiments verified the pH-triggered drug release of DOX-loaded micelles, and the release rate of doxorubicin (DOX) was 77% at pH 5.0 and 26% at pH 7.4. In drug-release kinetic analysis, a double-exponential model achieved the best fit. The copolymer appeared to be almost nontoxic, while the DOX-loaded micelles showed equivalent cytotoxicity compared to DOX at high concentration. The endocytosis of DOX-loaded micelles was two times that of DOX. Our findings suggest that the pH-sensitive brush type copolymer could be a possible carrier in drug delivery.
