Exploring efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of focus points of energy research. In this work, a series of MXene/Pt- x (wherein, x is the adding amount of 6.2 mM H 2 PtCl 6 solution) nanomaterials were fabricated via a facile synthesis method, in which coral-like Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. The Pt-loading amounts on the MXene could be simply controlled by varying the adding amounts of H 2 PtCl 6 , which would influence the sizes of Pt NPs on the MXene. The optimum catalytic activity was obtained on the MXene/Pt-3 with a low overpotential of 302 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at 10 mA cm −2 , which was about 84 mV less than MXene/Pt-2. The efficiently electrocatalytic HER activity of MXene/Pt- x nanomaterials was due to the electron transfer from MXene to Pt NPs. The HER performance of the MXene/Pt- x nanomaterials was influenced by both Pt-loading amounts and Pt particle sizes. This work expands future applications of MXene-based nanomaterials in clean energy conversion reactions.

Although hydrophilic and electrically conductive transition-metal carbon/nitride (MXenes) nanosheets hold great promise for electrically conductive and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications, the weak interaction among MXene nanosheets makes them difficult to form compressible three-dimensional architectures with high conductivity. Herein, inspired by the plant “Parthenocissus tricuspidata”, an efficient approach is demonstrated to fabricate conductive and lightweight Ti3C2Tx MXene/acidified carbon nanotube anisotropic aerogels (MCAs) with superelasticity and high thermal insulation. The MXene nanosheets construct the anisotropic and porous skeleton, while the acidified carbon nanotubes reinforce the pore walls of MXene nanosheets, making the MCAs superelastic and compressible. The superelastic MCA with only 5 wt % of the acidified carbon nanotubes is structurally stable during cyclic compressions at both high and ultralow temperatures. Its high conductivity (447.2 S m–1) and ultralow density (9.1 mg cm–3) endow its paraffin composite with a high EMI shielding efficiency of ∼51 dB at an ultralow filler content of 0.3 vol %. When the density of MCA increases to 18.2 mg cm–3, its EMI shielding effectiveness reaches 90 dB. Additionally, the porous and ultralight MCAs exhibit better thermal insulation performances as compared to commercial melamine and polystyrene foams. Therefore, the superelastic, electrically conductive, lightweight, and thermally insulating MCAs would be promising for EMI shielding applications in space equipment and portable wearable devices.

Oxidative polymerization strengthens PPy hydrogels and optimizes evaporation enthalpy. • Ti 3 C 2 T x -PPy multilevel channels guide salt crystallization to evaporator edges. • Ti 3 C 2 T x -PPy evaporator delivers 4.63 kg m −2 h −1 , 35% higher than PPy. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation, which relies on localized photothermal conversion at the gas-liquid interface, represents an effective strategy for seawater desalination. However, continuous salt crystallization and deposition at the evaporation interface remain a critical bottleneck that limits long-term operational stability. Herein, we develop a Ti 3 C 2 T x -PPy composite hydrogel evaporator with multilevel mass-transport channels for solar seawater desalination and spatial regulation of salt crystallization. The incorporation of Ti 3 C 2 T x optimizes the internal pore network of the polypyrrole hydrogel, establishing hierarchical mass-transport pathways that promote the preferential migration of salts towards the evaporator edges, where crystallization subsequently occurs. Meanwhile, Ti 3 C 2 T x enhances the photothermal conversion capability of the system and modulates the hydrogen-bonding structure of water molecules, thereby effectively lowering the evaporation energy barrier. Under 1 sun illumination, the Ti 3 C 2 T x -PPy evaporator achieves an evaporation rate of 4.63 kg m −2 h −1 , while maintaining a clean surface and undiminished performance after 50 h of continuous operation. The evaporator also exhibits purification efficiencies exceeding 99% in hypersaline solutions, dye-contaminated wastewater and real seawater, and delivers an average daily water yield of over 25 L m −2 under natural sunlight. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of hydrogel-based solar desalination systems with high efficiency, excellent salt resistance and long-term operational stability. Two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene exhibits promising application prospects in the field of resistive random-access memory (RRAM) owing to its unique layered structure, abundant surface functional groups, and tunable band structure. However, the modulation of its electronic structure is critical for promoting the application of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in such semiconductor devices. Herein, chitosan (CS) was incorporated with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to construct CS-MXene composite films, which were subsequently employed as the resistive layer in the RRAM devices. The conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene can be switched from a metallic-like state to a semiconducting state, and the resistive switching behaviors of CS-MXene hybrid films could be regulated by adjusting the mass ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to CS. When the mass ratio of two components was 0.5, the as-fabricated Al/CS-MXene/ITO/glass device exhibited the most outstanding resistive switching (RS) performance, characterized by a lower operating voltage, a higher on/off ratio, excellent retention, and reliable endurance. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the RS behavior originates from the electron trapping/detrapping dynamics within the CS-MXene resistive layer. This work demonstrates high-performance RRAM devices based on CS-MXene composites, offering a feasible strategy for modulating the electronic structure of two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. A high-performance ammonia (NH 3 ) gas sensor based on ZnO/Ti 3 C 2 T x composites was fabricated using the hydrothermal method. The gas sensitivity test results show that the composite of Ti 3 C 2 T x and ZnO improves the sensing performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x -based NH 3 sensor at room temperature. The response of ZnO/Ti 3 C 2 T x to 200 ppm NH 3 is 158.7 and the response/recovery time is 3.6 s/0.9 s. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated excellent humidity resistance and long-term stability. This improvement is attributed to the introduction of additional free oxygen species and oxygen vacancies on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface by ZnO, exposing more active metallic Ti sites. Simultaneously, reducing the number of -OH groups increases the number of -F groups and enhances the polarity of the -OH groups. DFT studies indicate that higher surface oxygen vacancy density promotes the formation of highly active and unsaturated Ti sites, thereby enhancing strong chemical adsorption of NH 3 . Concurrently, the reduction in -OH groups increases the polarity of -OH, thereby improving the adsorption efficiency of NH 3 molecules. Thus, modulating the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface with metal oxides to reduce hydroxyl groups and increase oxygen vacancies promotes the formation of Ti metal sites, offering a novel approach for developing high-performance room-temperature NH 3 gas sensors based on Ti 3 C 2 T x .

The practical application of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in supercapacitors is hindered by its tendency to spontaneously restack, which reduces accessible active sites and impedes charge transport kinetics. To address this challenge, a synergistic strategy is proposed: hydrothermally derived LaNiO 3 perovskite nanocubes are integrated into Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets via vacuum-assisted filtration, constructing a freestanding Ti 3 C 2 T x /LaNiO 3 composite electrode. The uniformly dispersed LaNiO 3 nanocubes act as interlayer spacers to inhibit MXene restacking and contribute capacitance, meanwhile, the conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x matrix ensures rapid electron transfer. As a result, the optimized composite exhibits a higher specific capacitance (206.8 F g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 ) than pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x , and demonstrates ultralong cycling stability (99.8% retention of the initial capacitance after 20,000 cycles at 5 A g -1 ). Furthermore, a quasi-solid-state asymmetric device (Ti 3 C 2 T x /LaNiO 3 //N-doped graphene) assembled from the composite achieves an energy density of 12.63 Wh kg -1 at a power density of 450.2 W kg -1 and maintains 88.6% of its capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for designing advanced MXene-based freestanding electrodes by intercalating perovskite nanocubes for next-generation energy storage systems.

A 3 vol% Ti 3 C 2 Tx@Ag addition achieves a strength–ductility synergy in Cu composites. • The Ag decoration improved MXene dispersion and interfacial bonding with Cu. • The Ti 3 C 2 Tx@Ag/Cu composites exhibited enhanced mechanical and tribological properties. Aerospace, rail transportation, and electronics require Cu-based materials with high thermal conductivity together with adequate mechanical and tribological performance. However, the relatively low strength, hardness, and wear resistance of Cu limit its use under demanding service conditions. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets were decorated with Ag nanoparticles, and Ti 3 C 2 T x @Ag/Cu composites were fabricated by ball milling followed by fast hot-press sintering. Ag nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surfaces, and the addition of Ti 3 C 2 T x @Ag progressively refined the Cu matrix grains from 5.31 μm in pure Cu to 1.24 μm at 10 vol% reinforcement. The 3 vol% Ti 3 C 2 T x @Ag/Cu composite exhibited the best strength–ductility balance, with an ultimate tensile strength of 288.5 MPa and an elongation of 41.8%, compared with 255.3 MPa and 37.6% for pure Cu, respectively. The hardness increased continuously from 48 to 116 HBW, whereas thermal conductivity showed a non-monotonic dependence on reinforcement content. Ti 3 C 2 T x @Ag produced only a modest change in the average friction coefficient but markedly improved wear resistance; the wear rate decreased from 21.24 × 10 −5 mm 3 ·(N·m) −1 for pure Cu to 6.29 × 10 −5 mm 3 ·(N·m) −1 at 10 vol%, corresponding to a 70.4% reduction. Worn-surface, wear-debris, and cross-sectional observations indicate that the improved wear resistance is mainly associated with suppressed cracking and large-scale material spalling, while friction-induced mechanical mixing and oxidation may provide an additional contribution. These results demonstrate that Ag-decorated Ti 3 C 2 T x is an effective reinforcement for jointly regulating the mechanical, thermal, and tribological behavior of Cu composites.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene shows potential for composite anti-corrosion composite coatings due to its excellent barrier properties and mechanical strength. However, its susceptibility to oxidative decomposition and inherent hydrophilicity limit applications in superhydrophobic coatings. To address these issues, we modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with dopamine and 1-dodecanethiol via a one-step hydrophobic treatment, producing SH/PDA-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. We also synthesized fluorinated prepolymers and fabricated self-healing superhydrophobic coatings with excellent photothermal and anti-corrosion properties using spray-coating. The coating exhibits outstanding anti-corrosion performance due to effective dispersion of SH/PDA- Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, physical barrier effects, and superhydrophobic structure. SEM, EDS, and EIS analyses confirmed that the coating maintained excellent corrosion protection for Q235 substrates even after 60 days immersion in 3.5wt% NaCl solution, primarily attributed to the physical barrier of SH/PDA-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and superhydrophobic surface. Additionally, the coating demonstrated excellent self-healing properties: after long-term corrosive medium exposure, its impedance and contact angle rapidly recovered from 2.17 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 and 76.9° to 9.55 × 10 10 Ω·cm 2 and 153.3° under 2.80 Sun irradiation. This study provides a novel approach for future MXene applications in metal corrosion protection through hydrophobic modification of Ti3C2Tx MXene and superhydrophobic coating construction.

The application of MXenes in organic coatings has been limited due to their tendency to agglomerate in polymer matrices, which is primarily caused by poor interfacial interactions with the polymer, and their susceptibility to oxidation under ambient conditions, resulting from the exposed Ti atoms on the surface. Here, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets were covalently modified with ionic liquids to prepare functionalized hybrid materials, which were subsequently incorporated as fillers into waterborne epoxy resin. The amine-functionalized ionic liquids improve the interaction between Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and the polymer matrix, enhancing dispersion and reducing oxidation by minimizing its environmental exposure. Corrosion resistance and tribological behaviors demonstrated that the composite coating exhibited superior anti-corrosion performance, achieving a five-fold increase in the lowest frequency impedance modulus, and enhanced wear resistance, with a 64.93 % reduction in wear rate. These improvements are ascribed to the labyrinthine effect generated by the uniform dispersion of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets and the enhanced mechanical properties of the coating, stemming from improved interfacial compatibility with the resin. This work presents a green modification strategy for Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, offering a viable approach to enhance its practical application in organic coatings. It also outlines potential future research directions, including further optimization of the MXene-resin interface and exploration of alternative ionic liquids for functionalization.

Two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes exposing different active facets are introduced into MgH 2 , and their catalytic effects are systematically investigated in depth through experimental and theoretical approaches. Excluding factors such as interlayer space, surface functional groups and experimental contingency, the exposed facets is considered to be the dominant factor for catalytic activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x towards MgH 2 . More exposed edge facets of Ti 3 C 2 T x displays higher catalytic activity than that with more exposed basal facets, which also leads to different rate-controlling steps of MgH 2 in the de/hydrogenation process. The low work function, strong hydrogen affinity and high content of in situ metallic Ti for the edge facet contribute the high catalytic activity. This work will give insights into the structural design of two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene used for enhancing the catalytic activity in various fields.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides, typically exemplified by Ti 3 C 2 T x , featuring unique two-dimensional layered architectures, intrinsic defects, and abundant surface chemical compositions, have been recognized as highly promising novel microwave absorbing materials. Nevertheless, their intrinsic single dielectric loss mechanism significantly restricts the further improvement of microwave absorption performance. Herein, a facile solvothermal approach is proposed to anchor symmetrical pyramidal Fe 3 O 4 onto the surfaces and interlayers of Ti 3 C 2 T x and graphene nanoribbons, by which impedance matching is effectively balanced. The resulting composite, denoted as Fe 3 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 T x /GNs, is endowed with additional loss mechanisms, thereby enhancing its microwave absorption performance. At a Ti 3 C 2 T x loading of 0.5 g/L and a thickness of 4.8 mm, the sample exhibits superior microwave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss of −51.97 dB achieved at 5.20 GHz, an effective absorption bandwidth of 2.72 GHz, and multi-band absorption characteristics. Notably, these findings provide valuable insights into the development of MXene-based composites with ultra-wide absorption bands and the clarification of electromagnetic wave absorption mechanisms.

Modulating the electromagnetic properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene to produce an ideal multifunctional and efficient microwave absorbent is a challenging research hotspot. Although the atomic layer deposited transition magnetic metal nanostructures are a feasible strategy, the effects of the components and microstructure of the introduced magnetic nanostructure on the electromagnetic wave absorption performances of the MXene are still far from clear. Here, the Fe element has been selected as the modifier, and a heterostructure Fe/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene hybrid is constructed by the atomic layer deposition of Fe nanoparticles on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. The influences of the deposition cycles on the chemical composition, microstructure, electromagnetic response characteristics, and microwave absorption properties are investigated. The results show that the decoration of Fe nanoparticles enables a tunable electromagnetic performance. The Fe/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene hybrid achieves an optimal attenuation with the minimum reflection loss of -82.94 dB at a small thickness of 1.16 mm, corresponding with an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.76 GHz. The strong microwave absorption is attributed to the dielectric-magnetic synergy in the MXene and Fe nanoparticles, which provides excellent impedance matching, interfacial and dipolar polarization loss, and magnetic resonance loss. Specifically, the hybrid endows a low Fe content of 2.66 wt%. This is important for the design of a lightweight absorber with high attenuation efficiency.
