Boosting sustainable monocyclic aromatics yield from catalytic fast pyrolysis of cotton stalk via a novel ZnZrOx-ZSM-5 tandem catalysis

Lingxi Bai,Haonan Li,Xingxiang Wang,Xin Pu,Zhipeng Lin,Shuzhen Zhou,Jiangbing Li,Xiaogang Wang,Jie Li,Lingtao Kong,Lanli Bai,Jichang Liu

Biomass valorization plays a vital role in ecological conservation and the advancement of a circular economy, while posing significant scientific challenges. This work successfully constructed a novel tandem catalytic system (ZnZrOx-ZSM-5) for the efficient production of sustainable monocyclic aromatics (SMAs) via the ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of cotton stalk. Compared to the sole ZSM-5, the tandem catalyst significantly enhanced the absolute yield of SMAs from 8.2 % to 26.8 %. Combined various structural characterization and carefully catalytic experiments, it was revealed that pyrolysis volatiles derived from cotton stalk first encounter the ZnZrOx bed-rich in oxygen vacancies and basic sites, where compounds such as AAAKs (alcohols, aldehydes, acetic acid, and ketone) and bulky alkoxy-phenols are preferentially pre-cracked into alkanes/alkenes and light phenols, respectively. Subsequently, within the ZSM-5 bed, these pre-cracked intermediates enhance the formation of SMAs by a series of reactions-including Diels-Alder condensation, dehydroxylation, and aromatization with hydrocarbon pool species. Simultaneously, GC‑MS analysis confirmed that the introduction of ZnZrOx effectively suppresses the formation of bulky polycyclic molecules (e.g., naphthalene, phenanthrene), thereby alleviating catalyst pore blockage and deactivation.

Comparative study on the effects of SBA-15 and ZSM-5 on the two-step catalytic pyrolysis of Nannochloropsis sp

Liqiang Zhang,Ningmin Zhu,Chaochao Wang,Rongzheng Cui,Riyi Lin

Two-step catalytic pyrolysis of Nannochloropsis sp (NS) was conducted with SBA-15 and ZSM-5. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) were used to investigate the effects of SBA-15 and ZSM-5 on the two-step pyrolysis of NS. The comparative study showed that ZSM-5 and SBA-15 had different effects on the pyrolysis characteristic of NS because of their different property. ZSM-5 had no effects on the kinetic mechanism, but SBA-15 obviously changed DTG curves and the reaction order of the low temperature pyrolysis stage. SBA-15 increased the contents of amines and alkanes to 19.40% and 5.62% in the first step compared with those of the one-step pyrolysis (1.95% and 1.83%). Due to the stronger acid sites, ZSM-5 improved the content of olefins (33.79%) and esters (10.79%) in the first step and the contents of nitriles (11.75%) and aromatic hydrocarbons (31.01%) in the second step compared with those of one-step pyrolysis (10.61%, 5.41%, 0.00%, 8.42%). Acid catalyst had no positive effects on the generation of N-heterocyclic compounds. This study is expected to provide a reference for the efficient pyrolysis utilization of microalgae.

One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Dual-Metal-Modified CuMn-ZSM-5/SAPO-34 Zeolite with Excellent MTO Catalytic Performance

Yao Wenjie,Chen Lei,Wang Yinzhong,Yang Gang

The composite molecular sieve catalysts with long reaction times were successfully synthesized by introducing Cu 2+ /Mn 2+ and ZSM-5 into the initial gel. The catalysts were characterized with XRD, SEM and NH 3 -TPD, and further investigated through the methanol-to-olefin reactions. The results showed that the addition of Cu 2+ caused the crystallinity of ZSM-5/SAPO-34 (Z-S) to increase significantly, but with addition of Mn 2+ , the crystallinity gradually decreased. With the increase of the Mn 2+ /Cu 2+ ratio, the desorption summits of the weak and strong acid sites gradually increased, but the weak acid centres gradually dominated, which is herein thought helped reducing formation of the coke. The designed Cu 0.05 -Mn 0.05 /Z-S samples showed beneficial catalytic performances with a lifetime of 1500 min, a 1.5-fold increase compared with the Cu 0.05 /Z-S, while their selectivities remained exceeding 89%. Immobilized Crosslinked Pectinase Preparation on Porous ZSM-5 Zeolites as Reusable Biocatalysts for Ultra-Efficient Hydrolysis of β-Glycosidic Bonds

Liu Can,Zhang Liming,Tan Li,Liu Yueping,Tian Weiqian,Ma Lanqing

In this study, we immobilized pectinase preparation on porous zeolite ZSM-5 as an enzyme carrier. We realized this immobilized enzyme catalyst, pectinase preparation@ZSM-5, via a simple combined strategy involving the van der Waals adsorption of pectinase preparation followed by crosslinking of the adsorbed pectinase preparation with glutaraldehyde over ZSM-5. Conformal pectinase preparation coverage of various ZSM-5 supports was achieved for the as-prepared pectinase preparation@ZSM-5. The porous pectinase preparation@ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited ultra-efficient biocatalytic activity for hydrolyzing the β-glycosidic bonds in the model substrate 4-nitrophenyl β-D-glucopyranoside, with a broad operating temperature range, high thermal stability, and excellent reusability. The relative activity of pectinase preparation@ZSM-5 at a high temperature (70 °C) was nine times higher than that of free pectinase preparation. Using thermal inactivation kinetic analysis based on the Arrhenius law, pectinase preparation@ZSM-5 showed higher activation energy for denaturation (315 kJ mol−1) and a longer half-life (62 min−1) than free pectinase preparation. Moreover, a Michaelis–Menten enzyme kinetic analysis indicated a higher maximal reaction velocity for pectinase preparation@ZSM-5 (0.22 µmol mg−1 min−1). This enhanced reactivity was attributed to the microstructure of the immobilized pectinase preparation@ZSM-5, which offered a heterogeneous reaction system that decreased the substrate–pectinase preparation binding affinity and modulated the kinetic characteristics of the enzyme. Additionally, pectinase preparation@ZSM-5 showed the best ethanol tolerance among all the reported pectinase preparation-immobilized catalysts, and an activity 247% higher than that of free pectinase preparation at a 10% (v/v) ethanol concentration was measured. Furthermore, pectinase preparation@ZSM-5 exhibited potential for practical engineering applications, promoting the hydrolysis of β-glycosidic bonds in baicalin to convert it into baicalein. This was achieved with a 98% conversion rate, i.e., 320% higher than that of the free enzyme.

Huazhen Liao,Song Ye,Jingxin Ding,Jianzhong Yu,Xinling Xv,Ling Pan,Peixuan Lin,Deping Wang

Enabling the drug delivery systems with drug release monitoring function is of essential importance to enhance therapeutic effectiveness. Herein, we took a ship-in-a-bottle synthesis strategy to construct the upconversion nanocrystal and zeolite compounded drug delivery system with real-time monitoring function, by using desilicated ZSM-5 zeolite as drug carrier and NaYF 4 : Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ nanocrystal as luminescent probe. Benefiting from the enlarged mesoporous in desilicated ZSM-5, the NaYF 4 : Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ nanocrystals can be successfully loaded inside and the upconversion emission intensity of Tm 3+ under 980 nm excitation was one order of magnitude enhanced after mild heat treatment. The drug release monitoring function were studied by using doxorubicin as model drug, the experimental results indicated that the upconversion emission intensity ratio of I 802nm /I 475nm can accurately evaluate drug release percentage. Further in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation suggested the doxorubicin-loaded [email protected] /DS/HT has excellent biocompatibility and is able to inhibit tumor cells effectively.

Competitive adsorption-triggered release of cinnamaldehyde from ZSM-5/ZIF-8 nanocarriers in sodium alginate films for early-stage fish preservation

Peng Shan,Hong Wang,Zhihang Xu,Yilin Wang,Chenglong Fu,Jinwen Hu,Yehan Tao,Xiaodong Xia,Jian Du,Haisong Wang

An adsorption-triggered mechanism was proposed for on-demand release. • Acidic sites on ZSM-5/ZIF-8 possess stronger adsorption energy for biogenic amines than CA. • The mechanical and gas barrier of film were improved after introducing ZSM-5/ZIF-8. • The developed packaging effectively prolonged fish preservation at 4 °C. Active packaging with on-demand release capability has attracted increasing interest in food preservation; however, the delayed response of active agents often compromises protection during the early stage of spoilage. In this work, an adsorption-triggered release strategy was proposed by incorporating cinnamaldehyde (CA)-loaded ZSM-5/ZIF-8 nanoparticles (CA@ZSM-5/ZIF-8) into a sodium alginate (SA) matrix. Owing to the strong affinity of biogenic amines toward the adsorption sites of ZSM-5/ZIF-8, low concentrations of histamine could competitively displace the preloaded CA, thereby enabling an early and responsive release behavior. In the absence of histamine, the cumulative release of CA from the composite film remained below 10% within 12 h, whereas it increased to approximately 60% in the presence of 5.0 mM histamine. Meanwhile, the optimized film exhibited improved tensile strength (54.6 MPa), water vapor barrier performance (0.86 × 10 −10  g·m·m −2 ·s −1 ·atm −1 ), UV-shielding capability, and water resistance. The film also showed pronounced antioxidant activity (91.4%), sustained antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus , and favorable biodegradability. When applied to fish preservation, the optimized film effectively extended the refrigerated shelf life to 6 days at 4 °C. This study provides a novel paradigm for on-demand release in intelligent food packaging.

The relationship between the preparation conditions and the crystallinity of ZSM-5 and the adsorption performance of sulfide in nature gas

Guolong Chen,Chao Zhang,Ke Jia,Yongjie Wang,Lijun Zhu

The preparation conditions of zeolite are the key factors affecting the adsorption performance of organic sulfur from natural gas. The influence of crystallization time, pH and Si/Al ratio of ZSM-5 zeolite preparation on the crystallinity, which is further related to the dimethyl sulfide adsorption performance in gas was explored for the first time. After conditional screening, the suitable conditions for organic sulfur adsorption are crystallization time of 36 h, Si/Al of 50, and pH as 13, and the breakthrough capacity of ZSM-5 is 8.23 mg/g. The Si/Al ratio has the greatest impact on the adsorption performance. With Si/Al ratio reduced from 200 to 50, the breakthrough time increased by 146%. The breakthrough time of ZSM-5 in methane is reduced by 12.5% compared with nitrogen. After the 5 cycles, the breakthrough time of the ZSM-5 decreases by less than 5%, indicating that the ZSM-5 can be reused for a long time in the natural gas purification industrial application process. This research provides research directions and guidance for the optimization of zeolite preparation conditions and the development of new organic sulfur adsorbents.

Efficient Catalytic Ozonation of Dimethyl Carbonate on M-Mn (M = Cr, Cu, Co)/ZSM-5 Zeolites: Further Analysis of Reaction Mechanism

Yulin Sun,Yiwei Zhang,Yong He,Wubin Weng,Yanqun Zhu,Peixi Liu,Zhihua Wang

Mn-based catalysts usually exhibit considerable potential for enhancing the catalytic ozonation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at a lower temperature. In this study, bimetallic oxides M-Mn (M = Cr, Cu, Co) were supported on HZSM-5 zeolites to degrade dimethyl carbonate (DMC, chemical formula C3H6O3), a typical VOC emitted during the productive process of lithium batteries, with Mn/ZSM-5 for comparison. The Cr-doped catalyst CrMn/ZSM-5 could achieve 92% DMC conversion with 91% CO2 selectivity (O3/DMC = 6, T = 120 °C), showing an excellent catalytic performance among the prepared catalysts. The exceptionally low-temperature activity of CrMn/ZSM-5 was attributed to the synergistic effect of its large surface area, sufficient oxygen vacancies, and suitable acidity and reducibility, which collectively enhanced the level of O3 activation and accelerated DMC degradation. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated desirable stability and resistance to varying concentrations of water vapor. To elucidate the reaction pathway, in situ DRIFTS was employed to track the evolution of intermediate species during the adsorption and catalytic ozonation of DMC. With a further study of DFT calculation, the reaction mechanism of DMC catalytic ozonation on CrMn/ZSM-5 catalysts was put forward.

ZSM-5 crystals grown on the wall of a long tubular reactor as a structured catalyst for cracking of endothermic fuels

Hui-hui Wu,Gang Li

In situ growth of ZSM-5 crystals on the surface of Ni-based alloy supports by hydrothermal synthesis and their mechanical, structural stability were investigated. ZSM-5 crystals grown on the wall of a long (750   mm) tubular reactor with a small inner diameter (1   mm) was evaluated as a structured catalyst for cracking of n -heptane as a model endothermic fuel. The results have shown that the adhesion strength between ZSM-5 crystals and the support was strong enough to resist a heating/fast-cooling cycle (the sample was immersed into water immediately after being heated to be 750   °C). The crystalline structure of ZSM-5 crystals was also stable against the heating/fast-cooling cycle. The structured catalyst was shown to be catalytically active for cracking of n -heptane (LHSV   =   200   h −1 ) at 700   °C. The formation rates of gaseous cracking products were 9.8   ml   min −1 and 29.3   ml   min −1 for the bare tubular reactor and the tubular reactor with ZSM-5 crystals grown on the wall, respectively. These structured catalysts show high promise for cracking of endothermic fuels at high temperatures.

Construction of flower spherical Cr–Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst with rich surface structure and study on CO2-assisted ethane dehydrogenation performance

Chao Miao,Shumei Chen,Lixing Liang,Kaixuan Shang,Jing Ouyang

In this paper, we used kaolinite tailings as raw materials to design and prepare ZSM-5 zeolite with “flower ball” morphology. Through the functional design of the material, Cr–Ce/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared for CO 2 -assisted ethane oxidative dehydrogenation reaction (CO 2 -ODH). The folds and grooves on the surface of the “flower ball” ZSM-5 carrier act as a good anchor site for the loading of the active components, thus better anchoring Cr and Ce metal oxides , and leading to a strong interaction between the active component and the carrier. The 5%Cr–10%Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance, the conversion rate of C 2 H 6 and the selectivity of C 2 H 4 can always maintain the initial 64% and 80% within 30 h stability test at 800 °C. The existence of abundant Cr 6+ species in catalyst strengthens the binding ability of the catalyst and active oxygen species and promotes the formation-gasification process of carbon deposits on surface of the catalyst.

Synthesis of Chainlike ZSM-5 with a Polyelectrolyte as a Second Template for Oleic Acid and Ethanol Cracking into Light Olefins

Wen He,Fuwei Li,Yufei Gu,Xiaofeng Wang,Hengshuo Gu,Hongbing Fu,Xiumei Liang,Zhixia Li

Chainlike ZSM-5 was synthesized in a tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) dual-template system. The synthesis parameters and formation mechanism of chainlike zeolites were investigated. The optimized composition of the synthesis mixture was as follows: the PDDA/SiO2, TPAOH/SiO2, SiO2/Al2O3, and H2O/SiO2 molar ratios are, respectively, 0.16, 0.4, 50, and 40, with tetraethyl orthosilicate and aluminum nitrate as silicon/aluminum sources. The resultant ZSM-5 showed a cross-linked chainlike morphology, mesopore-dominated pore structure, and mild acidity. The formation of the chainlike zeolite was attributed to synergistic actions between PDDA and TPAOH. TPAOH acted as an alkali source and helped to induce nucleation and control the crystal size. PDDA acted as a soft template to promote crystal nucleation, and a hard template to form a three-dimensional mesoporous structure. Light olefin (C2–4=) selectivities from cracking of ethanol and oleic acid over the present chainlike ZSM-5 at 400 °C reached 90 and 75.7%, respectively, which were much higher than those from commercial ZSM-5 (75 and 52.3%, respectively), demonstrating the excellent hydrothermal stability and catalytic performance of the synthesized chainlike zeolite.

Promoting effect of Cu and Mn doping on the Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

Yuheng Qiao,Zhenzhen Guan,Mengyan Zhang,Gan Chen,Shifeng Zhou,Hailong Liu,Jiang Wu,Ruitang Guo,Weiguo Pan,Fangqin Li,Ping He

In this paper, a series of Fe-based catalysts with Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) as supports were synthesized using the sol–gel method to obtain the Fe/ZSM-5, Mn-Fe/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were examined and characterized via catalytic activity testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results showed that the Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst had the best catalytic performance compared with the other catalysts. In addition, Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 all exhibited excellent stability as well as good tolerance to SO 2 & H 2 O under the experimental conditions. Further characterization results showed that with co-doping of Cu and Mn, the amount of Mn 4+ , Cu + , Fe 3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen (O β ) on the surface of Fe/ZSM-5 increased, promoting the catalytic performance. The DRIFT studies revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism on the surface of the Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst. The Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst is a good candidate for NH 3 -SCR both in high reactivity and outstanding stability.
