Single-atomic ruthenium coupling with NiFe layered double hydroxide in-situ growth on BiVO4 photoanode for boosting photoelectrochemical water splitting

Yunshuyu Sun,Hao Li,Yao Hu,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li,Philippe François-Xavier Corvini

In the present work, NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) supported single Ru atoms in-situ growth on BiVO 4 photoanode (BiVO 4 @NiFe-LDHs/Ru) was fabricated to enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Ru atoms anchored to NiFe-LDHs via oxygen coordination to form Ru-O-M bonds, which induced electrons rearrangement to improve charge carriers separation and injection. Combining with the synergistic effect of Ru and NiFe-LDHs, BiVO 4 @NiFe-LDHs/Ru achieves high photocurrent density of 4.65 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. Besides, Ru atoms induced formation of V (5−x)+ to stabilize V atoms in the lattice of BiVO 4 , which avoided V 5+ dissolution during PEC water oxidation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that Ru SAs anchored to BiVO 4 @NiFe-LDHs decrease the reaction energy barrier of rate-limiting step (*O → *OOH), resulting in acceleration of OER process. This work provides an effective pathway to design high efficient and stable photoanodes with single atoms for feasible PEC water splitting application.

Study on cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) modified BiVO4/Cu2O photoanode to significantly inhibit photochemical corrosion and improve the photoelectrochemical performance

Xue Li,Jinquan Wan,Yongwen Ma,Yan Wang,Xitong Li

The serious recombination of photogenerated carriers and the photochemical corrosion of the electrode extremely restricted its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance, which could not reach the theoretical photocurrent intensity. However, so far, there are few comprehensive reports on the mechanism of corrosion inhibition and stability improvement of electrodes in photocatalytic degradation. In this paper, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction modified by Cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) co-catalyst was successfully prepared to address the aforementioned issues. Co-Pi completed the holes capture and release process through the change of its own chemical state (Co 2+/3+ →Co 4+ →Co 2+/3+ ), and also affected the energy band bending of the BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction. In addition, the effect mechanism of the Co-Pi film thickness on the PEC performance of the photoanode was systematically discussed in this report. When the deposition amount was 0.05C∙cm −2 , the photocurrent density reached 2.22 mA∙cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which was 2.8 times that of bare BiVO 4 . The LSV curves, EIS and UV–vis absorption spectra reveal the enhanced PEC performance and light stability of the prepared electrode materials. When it is applied to photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O/0.05Co-Pi shows high activity and potential for MB and CIP degradation, and is expected to be stably applied to the field of photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants in water.

Efficient ammonia removal and toxic chlorate control by using BiVO4/WO3 heterojunction photoanode in a self-driven PEC-chlorine system

Yan Zhang,Youzhi Ji,Jinhua Li,Jing Bai,Shuai Chen,Linsen Li,Jiachen Wang,Tingsheng Zhou,Panyu Jiang,Xiaohong Guan,Baoxue Zhou

The efficient removal of ammonia is a difficult issue in wastewater treatment because ammonia is easily converted to nitrate instead of N 2 . The oxidation of ammonia by chlorine radical (Cl ) is recognized as an effective method. However, the massive generation of toxic byproducts chlorate and nitrate pose great risk for its practical application due to the excessive oxidation capacity of hydroxyl radical. Herein, we propose a novel method to selectively generate Cl for efficient ammonia removal using BiVO 4 /WO 3 photoanode in a self-driven photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system. Cl was predominantly produced by regulating the valence band edge of WO 3 though modifying BiVO 4 , which tuned the moderate oxidative force of hole to reduce OH generation and thereby inhibited the formation of chlorate and nitrate. The self-driven ammonia degradation was achieved by employing BiVO 4 /WO 3 and Si photovoltaic cells as composite photoanodes to improve light-absorption and electron-hole separation, thus enhancing Cl production. These results showed that 10 mg L −1 of ammonia-N was completely removed (99.3 %) in 120 min with 80.1 % of total nitrogen removal. Toxic byproducts chlorate and nitrate were inhibited by 79.3 % and 31 %, respectively, compared to WO 3 . This work provides new insights to develop efficient, energy-saving and environment-friendly method for ammonia pollution treatment.

Synergetic tuning of photocatalytic activity and photostability of Ag3PO4 via yttrium doping, carbon quantum dots and BiVO4 for atenolol degradation

Yifei Wang,Jing Niu,Xin Gao,Yanlin Zhang

In this study, Y-doped Ag 3 PO 4 , carbon quantum dots (CQDs), BiVO 4 were used to synthesize Z-scheme Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 . X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were employed to probe into the crystalline structure, morphology, optical property and chemical composition of Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 . The kinetic constant of the prepared Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 was approximately 2.8 times that of pristine Ag 3 PO 4 for atenolol degradation. The degradation of atenolol mainly depended on the excited holes, •OH and •O 2 − . The photocatalysis mechanism of Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 conforms to the Z-scheme mechanism deduced by reactive species trapping experiment, electron spin resonance (ESR) and photoelectrochemical measurement (photocurrent response and EIS). The introduction of yttrium, CQDs and BiVO 4 significantly promoted the photogenerated carriers separation of Ag 3 PO 4 and inhibited the photogenerated electron-holes pairs recombination of Ag 3 PO 4 during the degradation of atenolol. Oxygen defects caused by the doping of Y 3+ into Ag 3 PO 4 were the centers of capture of photogenerated electrons to generate •O 2 − , inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron-holes pairs and the photocorrosion of Ag 3 PO 4 .

Hierarchical construction of a new Z-scheme Bi/BiVO4-CdS heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Yongtao Xue,Zengyue Chen,Zhansheng Wu,Fei Tian,Bing Yu

Developing cost-effective photocatalysts with efficient electron hole separation efficiency and excellent light absorption performance for the remediation of organic pollutants from wastewater is highly desirable. Herein, a new Z-Scheme Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS heterojunction with leaf-like morphology has been successfully fabricated for the first time and its application as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) has been explored. Compared with BiVO 4 and Bi/BiVO 4 , the as-prepared Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS exhibits improved light absorption capacity and electron-hole separation efficiency, and it has a superior performance of photocatalytic degradation of TCH. The degradation ratio of TCH by Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalysis reaches 85.5% within 30 min. The rate constant of TCH degradation for Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS is 1.32 and 1.18 times of the BiVO 4 and Bi/BiVO 4 , respectively. In addition, Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS displays a high stability without obvious decay for its TCH degradation efficiency (<5%) during four recycles. The ESR characterization and reactive species trapping experiments indicates that the generated h + , •O 2 – , and •OH from Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalysis are responsible for TCH degradation. Since several intermediates are identified by HPLC-MS, the pathways for Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalytic degradation of TCH are proposed.

Simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and bisphenol A degradation by a 3D Z-scheme Bi2S3-BiVO4 graphene aerogel under visible light

Qianwei Liang,Sittipranee Ploychompoo,Jingda Chen,Tingting Zhou,Hanjin Luo

Rational design strategy and facile synthesis method of photocatalysts with high efficiency and stability have been still a significant challenge for the removal of environmental contaminants. In this study, a three dimensional (3D) all-solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system containing bismuth sulphide (Bi 2 S 3 ) and bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) was constructed as Bi 2 S 3 -BiVO 4 graphene aerogel (SVGA) by a facile hydrothermal method. The potential application of as-synthesized SVGA was demonstrated to remove Cr(VI) and bisphenol A (BPA) simultaneously in aqueous media via the synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis under visible light irradiation. The removal rates of Cr(VI) and BPA both nearly reached 100% after adsorption for 40 min and photocatalysis for 120 min under visible light (λ > 420 nm), which was much better than the removal efficiency of individual Bi 2 S 3 and BiVO 4 , as well as Bi 2 S 3 graphene aerogel (SGA) and BiVO 4 graphene aerogel (VGA) samples. The rGO played an important role as photoinduced electron transfer mediator between Bi 2 S 3 and BiVO 4 , which promoted the photogenerated electrons transfer efficiency and enhanced photocatalytic ability of SVGA efficiently. The harmful Cr(VI) was conserved into hypotoxic Cr(III) and BPA was degraded into CO 2 and H 2 O after photocatalysis on SVGA, and the fabricated SVGA also presented favorable stability and satisfactory application effect in practical water samples, implied that such photocatalyst has a promising application for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organics from aqueous environment.

A novel Z-scheme sonocatalyst system, Er3+:Y3Al5O12@Ni(Fe0.05Ga0.95)2O4-Au-BiVO4, and application in sonocatalytic degradation of sulfanilamide

Guowei Wang,Siyi Li,Xue Ma,Jing Qiao,Guanshu Li,Hongbo Zhang,Jun Wang,Youtao Song

A novel Z-scheme coated composite, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 , was designed for sonocatalytic degradation of sulfanilamide and fabricated by sol-hydrothermal and calcination methods. The prepared sample was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, Raman spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. In Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 , Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 and BiVO 4 form a Z-scheme sonocatalytic system, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 as an up-conversion luminescence agent (from visible-light to ultraviolet-light) provides the ultraviolet-light for satisfying the energy demand of wide band-gap Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 and Au nanoparticles as co-catalyst forms more active sites to enrich electrons. Also, Au nanoparticles as conductive channels promotes the electrons (e − ) from conduction band of BiVO 4 to transfer to valence band of Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 . Due to the characteristics of valence state diversity, the Fe 3+ and V 5+ constitute a redox reaction recombination system, which can also push electrons (e − ) on conduction band of BiVO 4 to quickly transfer to valence band of Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 . The sonocatalytic activity of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 nanocomposite was detected through degradation of sulfanilamide under ultrasonic irradiation. A high sonocatalytic degradation ratio (95.64%) of sulfanilamide can be obtained when the conditions of 10.00 mg/L sulfanilamide, 1.00 g/L Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 , 300 min ultrasonic irradiation and 100 mL total volume were adopted. Some factors such as ultrasonic irradiation time and cycle number on the sonocatalytic degradation efficiency are also investigated by using TOC and UV–vis spectroscopy. Subsequently, the effects of hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and hole scavengers were investigated to elaborate the mechanism. The researches show that the prepared Z-scheme Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 coated composite displayed an excellent sonocatalytic activity in degradation of sulfanilamide under ultrasonic irradiation.

BiVO4 hollow microplates: controlled synthesis and enhanced photocatalytic activity achieved through one-step boron doping and Co(OH)2 loading

Abraham Adenle,De-Kun Ma,De-Peng Qu,Wei Chen,Shaoming Huang

The fabrication of hollow micro- and nanocrystals can not only increase the specific surface area of the materials but also benefit the understanding of the crystal facet-dependent catalytic activity. On the other hand, both the rational doping of heteroatoms and loading of co-catalysts can enhance the photocatalytic activity of semiconductor-based photocatalysts. However, up to now, there have been only a few reports on the synergetic effect of the two. In this work, BiVO4 hollow microplates (HMPs) and solid microplates (SMPs) were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal route, and B3+ ion-doped BiVO4 HMPs loaded with Co(OH)2 nanoparticles [Co(OH)2/B–BiVO4] were prepared through a one-step impregnation method. The as-prepared products were characterized in detail. The formation mechanism of BiVO4 HMPs was also proposed on the basis of time-dependent SEM observations and XRD analyses. Taking rhodamine B (RhB) as a kind of pollutant model, the photocatalytic activities of BiVO4 HMPs, BiVO4 SMPs, B3+ ion-doped BiVO4 HMPs, BiVO4 HMPs loaded with Co(OH)2 nanoparticles, and Co(OH)2/B–BiVO4 HMPs were systematically studied. The results show that {010}-dominant BiVO4 SMPs exhibited better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of RhB than {010} and {110}-dominant BiVO4 HMPs. In addition, the doping of B3+ ions and loading of Co(OH)2 nanoparticles could synergistically enhance the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 HMPs. The present study not only provides reliable evidence for the crystal facet-dependent photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 but also develops a new strategy for enhancing its photocatalytic activity.

Construction of trace nitric oxide sensors at low temperature based on bulk embedded BiVO4 in SnO2 nanofibers with nano-heterointerfaces

Zhuangzhuang Ma,Zelin Ma,Zihuan Tang,Peijin Zou,Changlin Xiao,Jiale Zhang,Hongqiang Wang,Lichao Jia

Constructing heterostructures is an effective way to improve the carrier mobility for metal oxide sensing material, since heterojunctions are usually built only on the surface of the material, the carrier transport efficiency inside the material still needs to be improved. In this paper, BiVO 4 nanocrystals (BVO NCs) with an average size of 1 nm generated by pulsed laser irradiation were embedded in situ at the particle boundaries (PBs) of SnO 2 nanofibers to form an effective n-n heterojunctions inside the material. After embedding the BVO NCs in the SnO 2 samples, the response value for 10 ppm NO was improved to 48.91, which was 2.5 times higher than that of pure SnO 2 at near room temperature (50 °C). Meanwhile, the detection limit was lowered to 50 ppb with excellent long term stability. Detailed analysis and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the formation of abundant n-n heterojunctions not only promotes the electron-hole separation and the carrier mobility, but also reduces the conductivity and adsorption energy of the material, which significantly improves its sensing performance. This work demonstrates a new approach to modulate the gas-sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors by generating heterostructure inside the bulk of the material.

Construction of the Z-Scheme Heterogeneous HKUST-1/BiVO4 Nanorod Composite for Enhanced Piezo-Photocatalytic Reduction Performance of Cr(VI)

Qiqi Huang,Fuxiao Zhu,Feiyan Xiao,Gongliang Zhang,Hongman Hou,Jingran Bi,Shuang Yan,Hongshun Hao

In recent years, piezo-photocatalysis has become a promising strategy for solving environmental pollution problems by adding additional mechanical energy to the photocatalysis process. This work reported the effective synthesis of a variety of HKUST-1/BiVO4 heterogeneous materials by combining monoclinic BiVO4 and porous HKUST-1 semiconductors. The piezo-photocatalytic properties of HKUST-1/BiVO4 were studied by the reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) under visible-light irradiation and ultrasonic waves. In the piezo-photocatalysis process, the best reduction rates among as-prepared HKUST-1/BiVO4 composites were up to 96.20% of 10 ppm Cr(VI) solution, which was approximately 1.80 times that under visible light and about 4.13 times that under ultrasound. Under the action of the piezoelectric potential, the availability of free radicals increased the reduction rate of Cr(VI) and reached a synergistic effect of 1.14-fold.

Highly sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor based on MOF(CAU-17)-derived WO3 nanoleaves/BiVO4 nanoparticles heterojunctions for the detection of amoxicillin

Yongji Wei,Yanan Xu,Qi Zheng,Qingfeng Li,Yuchen Huang,Yuyan Cao,Nengqin Jia,Chaomin Zhang,Yang Chen

The rational construction of semiconductor heterojunctions with abundant active specific area and matched energy band alignment is vital to boosting photocurrent response in highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. Here, a molecularly imprinted PEC sensor is proposed based on a WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction using CAU-17, a Bi-based metal-organic framework (MOF), as a structural control agent. Unlike the conventional embedding structure, in which WO 3 is covered by BiVO 4 or vice versa, this MOF-derived WO 3 /BiVO 4 hybrid comprises WO 3 nanoleaves and uniformly distributed BiVO 4 nanoparticles. This structure offers a comparatively large surface area, enhancing light adsorption and enhancing solid-solid and solid-liquid interfacial contact, thereby promoting photogenerated electron-hole separation, rapid charge transfer, and interfacial reaction. With the aid of molecular imprinting technology, the WO 3 /BiVO 4 -based PEC sensor is capable of quantitatively detecting amoxicillin, a frequently prescribed antibiotic in both human and veterinary medicine. This sensor exhibits broad linear range of 10 −3 –10 3 μmol L −1 , low detection limit of 2.4 × 10 −4 μmol L −1 , high specificity, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, it has significant practical potential for environmental pollution monitoring.

Electrochemical reconfiguration of NiFe layered double hydroxide on BiVO4 induced by black phosphorus quantum dots for promoting photoelectrochemical water splitting

Yunshuyu Sun,Hao Chen,Zhiang Hou,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li,Philippe François-Xavier Corvini

In this work, black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) and NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDHs) were loaded on BiVO 4 photoanode for promoting photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. As a narrow bandgap p-type semiconductor with high work function, BPQDs could not only form p-n junction with BiVO 4 to enhance light harvest but also construct Schottky junction for charge carriers separation. More importantly, introduction of BPQDs facilitates the transformation of Ni(OH) 2 into NiOOH so as to improve the water oxidation capacity at low bias voltage. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrates that introduction of BPQDs accelerates the α/γ phase transition dynamically and thermodynamically, thus BiVO 4 /BPQDs/NiFe-LDHs photoanode achieves photocurrent density of 5.28 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE , AM 1.5 G and maintains good stability. In summary, this work provides new ideas for constructing efficient hole extraction layers on photoelectrode, well expanding the application of BPQDs in PEC water splitting.
