This study aimed to design and synthesize a novel adsorbent Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MPA-TAPA-COF material for the first time and used as an adsorbent of MSPE. It had significant potential for the pretreatment of trace analytes. The MSPE was coupled with ultra performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) for the rapid extraction and detection of 12 sulfonamides (SAs) from water and milk samples for the first time. Several experimental parameters were optimized, including adsorbent dosage and the effects of pH, ionic strength, adsorption time, and desorption conditions. Under the optimized pretreatment and instrumental conditions, good linearity of 0.1–100 μg·L −1 with a correlation coefficient 0.9994–0.9999, low limits of detection (0.004–0.044 μg·L −1 ) and limits of quantitation (0.013–0.136 μg·L −1 ) were obtained. Moreover, the recoveries of sulfonamides in water and milk samples were in the range of 60.88 %-102.94 %, and the relative standard deviations not exceeding 9.62 %. Finally, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MPA-TAPA-COF material possessed the magnetic separation and high adsorption affinity for extracting SAs from real samples. This study holds great significance in enhancing the monitoring of SAs drug residues in water and milk.

A covalent organic framework TPB-DMTP was physically coated onto the gully-like surface of stainless-steel fiber. The fabricated TPB-DMTP-coated stainless-steel fiber was used to extract five phthalic acid esters (PAEs) prior to the GC-FID separation and determination in bottled tea beverages. The developed SPME-GC-FID method gave limits of detection (S/N = 3) from 0.04 µg·L−1(DBP) to 0.44 µg·L−1(BBP), with the enrichment factors from 268 (DEHP) to 2657 (DPP). The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the built method for inter-day and fiber-to-fiber were 4.1–11.8% and 2.3–9.9%, respectively. The prepared TPB-DMTP-coated stainless-steel fibers could stand at least 180 cycles without a significant loss of extraction efficiency. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of trace PAEs in different bottled tea beverages, with recoveries from 85.5% to 115%.

In this paper, a novel robust TFPA–TTA–COF coating with nano pores was grafted to the gully-like surface of stainless steel fibers (GS-SSF). The GS-SSF were prepared using a two-step electrochemical etching method, and the covalent organic framework (COF) TFPA–TTA–COF coating was chemically bonded to the gully-like surface via in situ growth. The prepared metal fibers were applied as the headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) fibers and combined with gas chromatography (GC) to develop a detection method for phenolic compounds (PCs) in water. The developed method gave the limits of detection (S/N = 3) from 0.07 µg·L −1 to 0.52 µg·L −1 with enrichment factors from 243 to 2405. The relative standard deviations for inter-day study (n = 5) and fiber-to-fiber were from 3.94% to 8.89% and 2.17% to 8.05%, respectively. The prepared fiber could stand at least 180 cycles without remarkable loss of extraction efficiency. The developed method was successfully employed for the determination of trace PCs in environmental water with recoveries from 84.76% to 124.84%.

In the photo-Fenton reactions, fast recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes in Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) slows Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, which remains big challenge that significantly retards the overall process. Herein, NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88) was modified with 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DB) and TPB-DMTP-COF (COF-OMe) to in situ construct NM88(DB) 0.85 /COF-OMe composite that could strongly harvest the visible light for photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamerazine (SMR). With the addition of DB, electron-donating effect of NM88 was strengthened, which then promoted amino groups to react with aldehyde groups (Schiff-base), and thus highly facilitated the interfacial contact between NM88 and COF-OMe. Such modifications increased the degradation rate constants for NM88(DB) 0.85 /COF-OMe to 15.1 and 17.3 times that of NM88 and COF-OMe respectively with good reusability. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited 32–170 times higher degradation kinetics in comparison to other reported catalysts. Results showed that due to the Schiff-base reaction between NM88(DB) and COF-OMe, electron density on Fe(III) was decreased; and the photogenerated electrons of COF-OMe moved to NM88(DB) to reduce Fe(III), thus resulting in the generation of highly active Fe(II) and ·OH species. Furthermore, the main reactive species were determined to be ·OH and ·O 2 – by trapping experiments, and a possible mechanism of the degradation system followed Z-scheme charge transfer.

A magnetic covalent organic framework (Fe 3 O 4 @COF) with core–shell structure was fabricated at room temperature and used as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of polar endocrine-disrupting phenols (4-n-nonylphenol, 4-n-octylphenol, bisphenol A and bisphenol AF). The sorbent was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction and other techniques. The main parameters governing the extraction efficiency were optimized. The phenols were quantified by HPLC with fluorometric detection. The method has attractive features such as low limits of detection (0.08–0.21 ng.mL −1 ), wide linear ranges (0.5–1000 ng.mL −1 ), and good repeatability (intra-day: 0.39%–4.99%; inter-day: 1.57%–5.21%). Satisfactory results were obtained when the developed method was applied to determine the four target pollutants in real world drink samples with spiked recoveries over the range of 81.3~118.0%. This indicates that the method is a powerful tool for the enrichment and determination of endocrine-disrupting phenols in drink samples.
A magnetite based covalent organic framework (Fe 3 O 4 @COFs) was synthesized with TPAB, TPA and Fe 3 O 4 . It was used for magnetic solid-phase extraction of endocrine-disrupting phenols from plastic-packaged tea drink samples coupled with liquid chromatography (LC) for determination.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of widely distributed persistent organic pollutants (POPs), attracting increased attention. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for sensitive, reliable, and high-throughput methods to detect PFCs. This study used a monomer-mediated in situ growth strategy to design and synthesize Fe 3 O 4 @TFA–TAPA–COF. Accordingly, a novel method based on Fe 3 O 4 @TFA–TAPA magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS) was developed to detect 22 ultra trace PFCs from water and honey samples. Several techniques used to characterize Fe 3 O 4 @TFA–TAPA–COF showed that it had a porous structure with a large surface area (102.84 m²/g). Under optimized parameters, the ranges for the limit of detection (LOD) in water and honey were 0.42–23.44 pg/L and 3.36–187.52 pg/kg, respectively. The results indicated that Fe 3 O 4 @TFA–TAPA–COF had high selectivity, high adsorption ability, and reusability. Additionally, the proposed method exhibited good accuracy, low LOD, and good reproducibility. This method was successfully applied to determine PFCs in 54 tap water and 40 honey samples in Shijiazhuang, China, and provided methodological reference and technical support for the risk monitoring of food quality and safety.

Development of advanced in vivo sampling tools for the synchronous monitoring of drugs and endogenous biomarkers is critical for integrated pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) studies. Herein, a novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating was engineered based on a zwitterionic covalent organic framework (EB-TTB-DABSA COF), strategically functionalized with sulfonate and quaternary ammonium groups. This rationally designed coating provides synergistic electrostatic, π–π, and hydrophobic interactions, enabling the efficient and simultaneous extraction of both cationic alkaloids and neurotransmitters. Coupled with LC-MS/MS, the developed platform achieved highly sensitive (limits of detection down to 3.3 × 10 −3 ng·mL −1 ), minimally invasive, and synchronous monitoring of these analytes in paired blood and brain matrices of living rats. Application in a Parkinson's disease (PSD) model revealed altered pharmacokinetics of Coptis chinensis alkaloids, including significantly increased area under the curve (AUC) values ( p < 0.01) and prolonged elimination half-lives compared to controls. These findings indicate enhanced systemic absorption and improved bioavailability of alkaloids under PSD conditions. Crucially, pharmacodynamic analysis showed that alkaloid administration triggered a synchronized restoration of key depleted neurotransmitters in PSD brains. A correlation with a characteristic hysteresis pattern further established a delayed neuroprotective relationship between alkaloid concentrations and neurotransmitter levels. This study not only introduces a robust zwitterionic COF-SPME platform for concurrent in vivo biosampling but also provides the first quantitative neuropharmacological perspective on Coptis chinensis alkaloids, offering a foundational framework for mechanistic research and therapeutic development in PSD.

Superhydrophobic textiles based on cellulose, a key biological macromolecule, are highly desirable for applications in extreme environments. In this study, we develop a multifunctional cellulose-based cotton fabric ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) by applying a facile one-step hydrothermal coating method, integrating covalent organic frameworks (COFs), silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 ), and perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (POTS) onto the fiber surface to form a robust CF-COF/SiO 2 /POTS composite coating. The hierarchical micro/nanostructure modifies the cellulose surface, achieving a water contact angle of 155.4 ± 0.9° and a sliding angle of 7.9 ± 0.7°. Modern analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, confirm the molecular interactions between cellulose and the coating, revealing enhanced surface stability. The coated cellulose fabric exhibits robust chemical stability across acidic (pH 2), alkaline (pH 12), and saline (1 mol/L NaCl) conditions, mechanical durability after 50 adhesion-peeling cycles, five laundering cycles, and 820 h of sunlight exposure, and effective anti-icing behavior with reduced ice adhesion and rapid superhydrophobicity recovery post-icing (−18 °C, 12 h) via mild heating (60 °C, 5 min). Notably, the fabric undergoes an irreversible color change under UV–visible irradiation (300–1100 nm, 133.4 mW/cm 2 ), with spectroscopic analyses indicating photochemical oxidation of hydroxyl groups, yet retaining superhydrophobicity. This work presents a novel strategy for functionalizing cellulose-based textiles, offering durable self-cleaning, anti-icing, and photochromic properties for applications in protective clothing, outdoor gear, and anti-counterfeiting systems.

The residues of antiviral drugs acyclovir (ACV), penciclovir (PCV) and ganciclovir (GCV) in foods, particularly in ready-to-eat products, pose a significant threat to human health, making it urgent to develop a rapid and sensitive method for their detection. Herein, we designed a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted three-dimensional covalent organic framework (MICOF@Fe 3 O 4 ) for selective extraction of these antiviral drugs from complicated food matrix. The prepared MICOF@Fe 3 O 4 integrates molecular recognition ability, 3D COF structural advantages and magnetic responsiveness, providing high selectivity, large adsorption capacity and facile operation for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). Afterwards, a MSPE-UHPLC-MS/MS method was developed, which stands out as the most sensitive approach yet for ACV, PCV, GCV measurements and has been successfully applied to analyze thirteen ready-to-eat chicken samples. Endogenous PCV was detected in two of these samples, demonstrating the potential of the proposed method as a valuable tool for monitoring antiviral drug residues and ensuring food safety.

Aromatic disinfection by-products (DBPs) have garnered considerable interest in recent years for their potential carcinogenicity. However, efficient separation and enrichment of DBPs in complex samples is a challenge due to the extremely low content of aromatic DBPs and the complexity of sample matrices. In this study, a MIL-101(Cr)–NH 2 @TAPB-DVA-COF hybrid material was prepared as the enrichment medium of membrane solid-phase extraction (M-SPE) to efficiently determine trace emerging aromatic DBPs. This medium exhibited excellent enrichment capacity and selectivity for aromatic DBPs because of the strong hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. An efficient analytical method for five aromatic DBPs in juice drinks was successfully established by use of this hybrid material as the enrichment medium for M-SPE in combination with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The limits of detection of the established method were from 0.50 to 3.00 ng/L. Moreover, the method had been successfully used in real juice drinks to determine trace five aromatic DBPs with the spiked recoveries ranging from 84.1% to 125%. The method possessed high analytical sensitivity and accuracy for these five aromatic DBPs in juice drinks with the aid of the efficient M-SPE technology proposed.

Microplastics (MPs) act as carriers for organic pollutants ( e.g. antibiotics) and microorganisms ( e.g. bacteria) in waters, leading to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes. Moreover, the antibiotics adsorbed on MPs may exacerbate this process. For further research, it is necessary to understand the types and amounts of antibiotics adsorbed on MPs. However, due to the heavy work of MPs collection and sample pretreatment, there is a lack of analytical methods and relevant data. In this study, an in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) on-line coupled to HPLC-MS/MS method based on amorphous precursor polymer of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks/monolith-based composite adsorbent was developed, which could efficiently capture, enrich and analyze tetracycline (TCs) antibiotics. Under the optimal extraction parameters, the developed method was capable of detecting TCs at levels as low as 0.48–1.76 pg. This method was applied to analyze the TCs adsorbed on MPs of different particle sizes in mariculture water for the first time, requiring a minimum amount of MPs of only 1 mg. Furthermore, it was observed that there could be an antagonistic relationship between algal biofilm and TCs loaded on MPs. This approach could open up new possibilities for analyzing pollutants on MPs and support deeper research on MPs.

Anthropogenic activities involving unintended uranium leakage from nuclear accidents, large-scale uranium mining, or nuclear weapon production have caused health and environmental concerns. The increasing demand for highly efficient materials to dispose of uranium may facilitate the sustainable development of nuclear power plants. Herein, a β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic framework (COF) material, named DQTP COF, was solvothermally synthesized by an imine condensation of 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) and 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone (DAAQ). The chemical and physical properties of the synthesized DQTP COF were analyzed using various advanced techniques. Additionally, the adsorption behaviors of DQTP COF for U(VI) were optimized by varying parameters, such as pH, ionic strength, contaminant concentration, and reaction temperature. The produced DQTP COF showed an enhanced adsorption capacity of 517.62 mg g−1 at pH 6.0 towards U(VI), outperforming most of the currently reported COF-based materials. Moreover, DQTP COF exhibited favorable thermodynamics and excellent anti-ion interference properties as well as good reusability. Experimental analysis and theoretical DFT calculations revealed that UO22+ ions were bound exclusively by carbonyl groups via intramolecular coordination and electrostatic interaction in DQTP COF. This work paves the way to rationally develop functionalized COFs and highlights the potential of COFs for environmental remediation.
