An ultra stable amorphous Al-Ni-Ce alloy anode for aqueous aluminum metal batteries

Tong Xiao,Shuai Liu,Ting Liu,Guanbin Peng,Qingsong Meng,Xinshun Yuan,Jingyi Wu,Weimin Wang,Kaikai Song,Guoxing Li,Wei Chu,Lina Hu

The development of aqueous aluminum metal batteries is hampered by severe parasitic side reactions at the aluminum metal anode/electrolyte interface. In this work, aluminum-based amorphous alloy anodes are applied to aqueous aluminum metal batteries for the first time. Amorphous aluminum alloys exhibit higher adsorption energy for Al atoms and can regulate the Al 3 + deposition potential, thereby offering a kinetic advantage over the hydrogen evolution reaction. Their isotropic deposition behavior suppresses aluminum dendrite growth, while the amorphous structure also improves interfacial chemistry, mitigating anode self-corrosion and passivation. The coupling between the adsorbed atoms and the Al 85 Ni 10 Ce 5 substrate electrons is stronger, leading to more stable adsorption. Symmetric cells assembled with Al 85 Ni 10 Ce 5 amorphous alloys demonstrated stable cycling for 5000 h, which present the best cycling performance for bare anode for aqueous aluminum metal batteries at 0.1 mA cm −2 and 0.1 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, a full cell incorporating this anode with a K 2 CoFe(CN) 6 cathode delivered a high initial discharge capacity of 98.3 mAh g −1 . This work provides not only a scalable strategy for high performance aqueous aluminum metal batteries, but also theoretical guidance for the electrode optimization of other metal battery systems.

Differential regulation of Al/CuO thermite combustion via alloy fuels and electrostatic spray atomization

Zhan-jun Yang,Mi Li,Yan-Bo Cao,Yi Wu,Qiang Xu

This study addresses the issues of the limited contact interface between the fuel and the oxidizer. A strategy for simultaneously optimizing the formulation design and the preparation process was proposed. Three types of fuels - pure aluminum, aluminum-magnesium alloy, and aluminum-silicon alloy - were selected, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as the binder. Six groups of thermal reaction samples were prepared by two methods: physical mixing (PM) and electrostatic spray atomization (ES). The microstructure, combustion characteristics, thermal behavior, and product composition of the samples were systematically studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-speed photography, infrared thermal imaging, and synchronous thermal analysis. The results showed that the alloy fuels affected the later stage of the reaction by altering the melting behavior and surface oxide layer characteristics, while electrostatic spray atomization played a key role in the early stage, functioning by shortening the mass transfer distance and enhancing the “pre-ignition” effect of polyvinylidene fluoride. The coupling of fuel formulation and preparation process enables differential modulation of the combustion performance of Al/CuO thermites. This study provides an effective strategy for developing high-performance aluminum-based thermite materials.

Corrosion behavior of B4C/Al neutron absorber material in spent nuclear fuel pool environment

Yuting Rao,Xiangju Liu,Chengtao Li,Qianwu Li,Qingliang Lv,Quantong Jiang,Nazhen Liu

B 4 C/Al neutron absorber materials are critical for the criticality safety of spent nuclear fuel wet storage, yet their corrosion-induced degradation poses a significant challenge to long-term operational reliability. This study systematically investigated the corrosion behavior and failure mechanism of a commercial B 4 C/Al composite during long-term immersion in a simulated spent fuel pool environment (2700 ppm boric acid at 40°C) via microstructural characterization and electrochemical analyses. Results indicate that the corrosion product layer exhibits a decelerating growth trend, and is mainly composed of non-protective aluminum oxides and hydroxides. Scanning kelvin probe (SKP) and in-situ scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) mapping revealed that preferential corrosion occurs at the interface, driven by the micro-galvanic coupling between the noble B 4 C particles (micro-cathodes) and the active Al matrix (micro-anodes). The rapid interfacial dissolution undermines the matrix support, causing the neutron-absorbing B 4 C particles to undergo mechanical loosening and detach along with the shedding of the loose corrosion product layer, thereby posing a potential risk to the material’s functional performance.

Co doped-CuS as cathode for high-voltage aqueous Cu-Al hybrid-ion batteries

Meina Tan,Yang Qin,Jiaxin Luo,Yiping Wang,Fazhi Zhang,Xuhui Zhao,Xiaodong Lei

Aqueous hybrid-ion batteries (AHBs) offered various advantages, including low cost, high energy density, high operation voltage, safety, and durability. These characteristics made them an attractive choice for energy storage devices. CuS was a high-capacity cathode material for Al storage. However, the rate performance of CuS under high-voltages conditions was not satisfying. Here, we prepared Co-doped CuS (Co-CuS) nanosheet material with the small band gap by using the ball milling method as the cathode material of aqueous Cu-Al hybrid-ion battery. Co doping can improve the electron transport capacity and provide more active sites. At high current density, Co doping enhances the electrochemical kinetics, operating voltage and electrochemical performance of the materials. The battery exhibits a capacity of 175 mAh g -1 at 2000 mA g -1 and 108 mAh g -1 at 4000 mA g -1 . After 200 cycles of charge and discharge tests, a capacity of 93 mAh g -1 remains. This offers a valuable approach to the development of aqueous Cu-Al hybrid-ion battery electrode materials with good electrochemical performance under high operating voltage and high current conditions.

Enhanced multiferroic properties of Eu-Al Co-doped BFO nanomaterials for advanced ferroelectric applications

Jingxian He,Zhen Jiang,Yuan Liu,Zhenfeng Jing,Shuhui Sun,Haixia Zhang,Fengqing Zhang

This study successfully synthesized bismuth ferrite (BFO) thin films co-doped with europium (Eu) and aluminum (Al) using the sol-gel method, while comprehensively investigating their performance characteristics. By systematically adjusting the Al doping ratio in Bi 0.98 Eu 0.02 Fe1 -x Al x O 3 (with x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07), significant changes in the material properties were observed. XRD and Raman spectroscopy validated the presence of R 3 c and Pnma phases in the synthesized BFO thin films, which demonstrated excellent crystallinity. Microstructural and compositional assessments, performed using SEM and XPS, indicated that the BEFAO5 sample possessed high crystallinity and a relatively low oxygen vacancy content. These characteristics enhanced the exceptional current-voltage (J-V) properties and ferroelectric behavior of BEFAO5. Additionally, the influence of vacancy defects on the ferroelectric efficiency and durability of BFO ferrite thin films was examined. The results indicated that the co-doping approach significantly improved the material's resistance to aging. In summary, the combined doping of Eu and Al not only substantially modified the crystalline structure and physical attributes of BFO thin films but also markedly enhanced their potential for applications in energy storage and spintronic technologies.

Enhancement of thermal conductivity in diamond/Al composites through vacuum-pressure thermal diffusion sintering

Wenxia Zhang,Weixia Shen,Chao Fang,Ye Wang,Yuewen Zhang,Liangchao Chen,Qianqian Wang,Kenan Li,Biao Wan,Zhuangfei Zhang

Improving the thermal conductivity of diamond-metal composites has always been a significant challenge in the field of thermal management. In this paper, diamond/Al composites were systematically studied, and the influence of holding time (10-120 min) on interface structure and thermal conductivity was discussed. The research results shows that the long-term thermal diffusion sintering can effectively the dense interfacial bonding of diamond/Al composites and enhance the thermal conductivity. The diamond/Al composites with 50 vol% 900 μm diamond attained the highest value of 888.73 W/mK under the sintering conditions of 650 ℃, 50 MPa, and 120 min, nearly 92% of the theoretical value predicted by the Maxwell model. This study establishes that high thermal conductivity can be achieved through long-term thermal diffusion alone, without the complex diamond surface coating and substrate alloying.

Bio-inspired gradient-heterogeneous Al/Al2O3 composites: Strength–toughness synergistic design and fracture mechanisms

Tian-Hao Xu,Xiang-Yu Meng,Song Shen,Guo-Chao Mo,Ping Shen

Inspired by natural hierarchical structures, this study presents a novel biomimetic Al/Al 2 O 3 composite featuring a gradient-heterogeneous architecture that effectively addresses the long-standing strength–toughness trade-off in metal–ceramic systems. A high-resolution vat photopolymerization 3D printing process was used to fabricate complex ceramic scaffolds with a multi-scale design, incorporating a turtle shell-inspired gradient in porosity and wall thickness, along with layered, tubular, and hexagonal cellular units derived respectively from nacre, ram horns, and beehives. Through pressure infiltration of molten aluminum, a fully interpenetrating composite with strong interfacial bonding was achieved. The resulting material exhibits a spatially tailored gradient in mechanical properties, achieving a surface strength of 634 MPa and a core energy absorption capacity of 14.36 MJ/cm 3 . In situ mechanical testing and finite element analysis reveal that multi-scale synergistic toughening mechanisms—including architecture-guided crack deflection, distributed plastic deformation, and stress redistribution—collectively contribute to the enhanced performance. This work demonstrates the potential of additive manufacturing-enabled structural programming to engineer composites with spatially optimized mechanical properties, offering a new paradigm for the design of advanced structural materials.

Research on ultra-efficient removal of thorium ions by Fe3O4/Al-MOF composite material

Ran Zhang,Shangjie Zhao,Qianxi Li,Ke Wang,Ke Zhang,Xiaofan Ding,Jing Zhao,Songtao Xiao

Thorium ions, known for their elevated toxicity and radioactivity, pose substantial ecological hazards, highlighting the need for efficient technologies to selectively eliminate them from water. The solid adsorption approach has gained widespread use in removing thorium ions because of its notable effectiveness, convenience, and straightforward operation. The key to this method’s success is the solid-phase adsorbent, underscoring the pressing need to develop exceptionally efficient adsorbents for thorium ion removal. Here, we present a novel in situ synthesis approach for enhancing an aluminum-based Metal-Organic Framework (Al-MOF) through the incorporation of iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ). The resulting Fe 3 O 4 /Al-MOF composite adsorbent demonstrates exceptional performance: (a) unparalleled adsorption capacity, achieving a remarkable Th(IV) uptake of 3058.0 mg g −1 , significantly outperforming the unmodified Al-MOF (1324.6 mg g −1 ); (b) outstanding selectivity, exhibiting high specificity for Th(IV) adsorption (SF Th/metals  > 1000); (c) superb reusability, with excellent regeneration capabilities (85 % retention after 6 cycles). Through combined FT-IR and XPS analyses, we confirm that carboxylate oxygen atoms and Fe-O adsorption sites are key contributors to the Th(IV) adsorption mechanism. This work advances the design of efficient MOF-based composite adsorbents through valuable insights.

Combustion characteristics of Al/B loaded Gel fuel droplets under high temperature and pressure

Mengxiong Li,Chuxiang Sun,Qingyu Li,Qingchun Yang,Hongxin Wang,Xu Xu

This research investigates the combustion behavior of aluminum and boron loaded gel fuel droplets (10–20 wt%) under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. High-speed and color imaging captured the combustion process. The addition of gellant induces micro-explosions that enhance the burning rate; however, increasing particle concentration weakens this effect. At high concentrations, early particle shell formation hinders gel layer development, suppressing micro-explosions. Both micro-explosions and particle shells promote liquid-phase combustion. At low concentrations, micro-explosions dominate the enhancement, while at high concentrations, larger, early-formed particle shells are the primary contributor. Increasing ambient pressure reduces micro-explosion intensity but shortens ignition delay and raises the burning rate. Under high pressure, weak micro-explosions offer less enhancement and lead to larger particle agglomerates. Aluminum and boron gel droplets show similar liquid-phase behavior, but differ in particle combustion: aluminum ignites under all conditions, while boron requires higher pressures. The combustion process of high-concentration gel droplets under elevated conditions is divided into four stages: Stable Combustion, Particle Shell Formation, Particle Agglomerate Ignition, and Molten Particle Combustion. This staged model emphasizes the dominant role of particle shells, with minor contributions from micro-explosions.

The combustion reactivity of core-shell Al/Fluoropolymers and application in RDX-based explosives

Ting Liu,Jian Wang,Jie Chen,Cui Nie,Yaofeng Mao,Jun Wang,Ruolei Zhong,Wei Cao,Fude Nie

Aluminum (Al) powder is widely applied in thermobaric explosives due to its high energy density and favorable reaction kinetics. However, the inert oxide layer (Al 2 O 3 ) on Al particles limits combustion reactivity and energy efficiency. Fluoride-based surface modification has been developed as an effective approach to address this issue. Here, four classical fluoropolymers (F11, F14, PVDF, PTFE) are employed as coatings to prepare core-shell Al/Fluoropolymer. The combustion experimental results demonstrate that the core-shell Al/PTFE exhibits the highest flame propagation rate (52.88 mm·ms -1 ) and pressure output (109.02 kPa) performance. Consequently, core-shell Al/PTFE is selected as a high-energy fuel to prepare RDX/Al/PTFE microspheres via the emulsion and solvent evaporation method, which can enhance the energy performance of RDX. The effects of the core-shell Al/PTFE ratio and RDX content on the combustion heat and pressure output are systematically investigated. The peak pressure reaches a maximum of 187.8 kPa when the mass ratio of RDX, Al, and PTFE is 60: 25: 10. Additionally, RDX/Al/PTFE microspheres exhibit significantly higher laser-induced air shock velocities, detonation heat, and detonation pressure than those of pure RDX and RDX/Al. The mechanism underlying the enhanced reactivity and energetic performance is attributed to the ability of PTFE to etch the inert Al 2 O 3 shell on the surface of Al particles, thereby improving post-combustion reactions and significantly increasing the overall energy output of RDX explosives. This work offers a novel design strategy for high-energy structural thermobaric explosives for the practical applications.

Liquid gallium as a mediator for synergistically enhanced energy release in Al/MoO3 thermite

Buhao Zheng,Bonan Gu,Qizhen Zhang,Jingxin Li,Changkun Song,Dihua Ouyang,Wenchao Zhang

Liquid metals offer a unique paradigm for modulating the performance of energetic materials due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. In this study, a novel strategy to enhance the reactivity of Al/MoO 3 thermite by incorporating liquid metal Ga was systematically investigated. Micro-scale Ga particles and Al Ga composite particles were successfully prepared via a surfactant-assisted ultrasonic dispersion method, which effectively inhibited the coalescence of liquid Ga and enabled uniform distribution within the thermite. The results demonstrated that the Ga-containing thermite exhibited excellent performance in key parameters including heat release, ignition, and combustion characteristics. Even with Ga addition accounting for only 5% of the Al mass, the AlGa5/MoO 3 thermite exhibited a 6.6% enhancement in heat release to 4023 J/g, a 29% reduction in ignition delay time to 0.72 ms, a 35% increase in burning rate to 10.2 m /s, and a 5.7% rise in peak flame temperature to 2562 °C, all compared to the baseline Al/MoO 3 thermite. Post-combustion characterization confirmed the formation of a Ga Mo intermetallic compound, which demonstrates that Ga primarily acts as a mediator by forming rapid heat-transfer channels. The findings underscore the immense potential of liquid metals as versatile additives for designing next-generation energetic materials with tailored ignition and combustion properties.

Enhanced combustion reaction and energy output of Al based energetic materials through introducing perfluorocarbon

Jun Wang,Jie Chen,Wei Cao

Introducing additional oxidizers in aluminized explosives is an effective way to improve energy performance by enhancing the secondary combustion reaction. In this work, perfluorocarbon as oxidizer has been introduced into TATB/Al based energetic materials to improve combustion reaction and energy output performance. The uniform TATB/Al/perfluorocarbon composites are prepared through acoustic resonance mixed technology, and the energy and pressure output performance are fully studied in air blast and underwater explosion. A significantly exothermic peak derived from the reaction between fluorine and Al is observed between 540 and 580℃ for TATB/Al/perfluorocarbon. The heat of explosion of TATB/Al/perfluorocarbon is increased first and then decreased with F/Al ratio from 0 to 0.608. The highest heat of explosion is 6021 J/g for TATB/Al/perfluorocarbon with F/Al ratio of 0.274. Furthermore, the enhanced working capacity, the significantly enlarged fireball and relatively high overpressure are obtained for TATB/Al/perfluorocarbon. More importantly, the shock impulse and first bubble oscillation time of TATB/Al/perfluorocarbon have been increased by 23.2% and 21.18% during underwater explosion, respectively. The results further illustrate that adding perfluorocarbon is a feasible approach to enhance energy output due to combustion reaction between fluorine and Al, which can be applied in explosives and propellants.
