The large accumulation of superfine iron tailings (SIT) as solid waste may lead to significant environmental and safety risks, urgently requiring resource utilization. The preparation of geopolymers using SIT is high-valued and environmentally friendly method. Therefore, a low-cost, alkali-containing solid carbonate series accelerator (CSA) was used to accelerate the early geopolymerization process of coal fly ash (CFA)/SIT-based three-dimensional printed geopolymers (CS-3DPG). The optimal addition time and content of CSA were 25 min and 6 %, respectively, which significantly shortened the setting time of CS-3DPG to 9 min and increased its early compressive strength to 24.18 MPa. The addition of CSA enhanced the rheological properties of CS-3DPG, improving its printability and buildability. These results provide assurance for achieving rapid prototyping of CS-3DPG. Combined with microscopic characterization, selective chemical extractions (SCE) and isothermal conduction calorimetry (ICC), CSA effectively promoted the CS-3DPG geopolymerization reaction process, transitioning from interactions at the phase boundary (I) to diffusion (D). Additionally, the CO 2 emissions of CS-3DPG were reduced by 76 % compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). This study successfully reveals the role and impact mechanism of CSA in 3DPG, providing an important theoretical reference for regulating 3DPG buildability.

Deliberate engineering of built-in electric fields (BEFs) can facilitate electron transfer and promote asymmetrical charge distribution, thereby regulating the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates. Herein, an oxygen-deficiency-rich MnO-CeO2 is synthetized supported on a carbon sphere (MnO-CeO2@Cs), adeptly crafted with a prominent work function difference (ΔΦ) and robust BEF, targeting the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Empirical and theoretical results substantiate that the BEF triggers interfacial charge redistribution, fine-tuning the adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates and hastening reaction kinetics. Consequently, the MnO-CeO2@Cs showcases commendable performance (E1/2 = 0.80 V and jL = 5.5 mA cm−2), outshining its single-component counterparts. Impressively, the MnO-CeO2@Cs-based zinc–air batteries (ZABs) boast an exemplary power density of 202.7 mW cm−2 and enduring stability of 297 h. Additionally, the solid-state ZAB commands a peak power density of 67.4 mW cm−2, underscoring its potential in flexible ZAB applications. This work delineates a strategic avenue to harness interfacial charge redistribution, aiming to enhance the catalytic performance and longevity of energy conversion/storage apparatuses.

ZIF-8 has strong potential for biomedical applications due to its excellent biocompatibility. In this study, 89.67 % of natural drug magnolol (Mag) was loaded in ZIF-8 to form Mag@ZIF-8, which was subsequently modified with chitosan (CS) to obtain Mag@ZIF-8/CS. The prepared materials were characterized using the UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, DLS, SEM and TEM techniques. Thermal stability of materials was analyzed using Thermos Gravimetric Analysis system. PDI and Z -average hydrodynamic sizes of Mag@ZIF-8/CS and Mag@ZIF-8 were increased compared to ZIF-8. Similarly, Mag@ZIF-8 revealed higher zeta potential (+17.5 ± 2.3 mV) than ZIF-8 (+9.8 ± 0.5 mV), but Mag@ZIF-8/CS exposed 3.2 ± 0.9 mV, in water; however, at pH 4 it was changed to +5 mV. Pure ZIF-8 and Mag@ZIF-8 exhibited a hexagonal morphology, while Mag@ZIF-8/CS had a rotund, flat-like structure, with mean particle size of 101 nm, 123 nm and 343 nm, respectively. Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis offered a deeper insight into the electronic properties and binding interactions of the composites. Under acidic conditions, drug release from Mag@ZIF-8 was higher (86.4 %) and faster than from Mag@ZIF-8/CS (74 %), when tested at physiological pH 7.4 and 37 °C. This, suggests that CS modification of Mag@ZIF-8 is crucial for achieving prolonged and sustained drug release. Mag@ZIF-8 and Mag@ZIF-8/CS depicted a two-fold increase in antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus , demonstrating a synergistic effect. The MIC value for E. coli and S. aureus were, 35 μg/mL and 20 μg/mL, respectively, confirming the enhanced antibacterial efficacy of the composites. Molecular docking analysis provided deeper insights into the binding interactions between the materials and the E. coli protein 5AZC.

Cobalt catalysts supported on TiO2 with different crystal forms (anatase and rutile) differ sharply in CO2 conversion and product selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation. The Co/rutile-TiO2 catalyst selectively catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation to CH4, while CO is the main product on the Co/anatase-TiO2 catalyst. In situ DRIFT (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform) results have partially revealed the reaction pathway of CO2 hydrogenation on these two catalysts. On Co/rutile-TiO2, the reaction proceeds through the key intermediate formate species, which is further converted to CH4. Differently, the reaction on Co/anatase-TiO2 undergoes CO2 → *CO, which desorbs to form gas-phase CO instead of subsequent hydrogenation. The strongly bonded *CO is required to enhance the subsequent hydrogenation. By simply changing the calcination temperature of anatase TiO2, the product selectivity can be tuned from CO to CH4 with a significant increase in CO2 conversion due to the surface phase transition of the anatase to the rutile phase. The addition of Zr, K, and Cs further improves the CO, CO2, and H2 adsorption in both the capacity and strength over anatase- and rutile-supported catalysts. The Zr modification makes the reaction pathway over anatase-supported catalyst proceed via the intermediate formate species and enables the subsequent hydrogenation to CH4. In addition, the surface C/H ratio increases significantly in the presence of promoters (unpromoted < Zr-promoted < K-Zr-promoted ∼ Cs-Zr-promoted), which leads to the highest C2+ selectivity of 17% with 70% CO2 conversion over K-Zr-Co/anatase-TiO2 catalyst. These results reveal mechanistic insights into how the product distribution of Co/TiO2 catalysts can be manipulated through adjusting the adsorption performance and surface C/H ratio.

Novel composite of immobilized layered K 2x Mn x Sn 3−x S 6 (x = 0.5–0.95) (KMS-1) on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO), KMS-1/r-GO (KGO), has been fabricated by employing hydrothermal technique and used for the removal of radioactive Cs + and Sr 2+ ions from aqueous solutions. The KGO was characterized thoroughly with different characteristic techniques and found that the laminar KMS-1 nanoplate were immobilized on the surface of r-GO nanosheets, forming a highly porous stacked structure. Batch studies have been done for obtaining optimal experimental parameters and investigating the effect of adsorption time, initial concentration of pollutant, pH of solution, temperature, and competing anions on the removal properties. At room temperature, the maximum adsorption capacity of KGO was 338.18 mg·g −1 and 220.12 mg·g −1 for both Cs + and Sr 2+ , respectively. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were fitted well with experimental data of removed Cs + and Sr 2+ . Adsorption showed good selectivity of composite towards Cs + and Sr 2+ in the presence of co-existing ions (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ). The proposed adsorption mechanism involved ion exchange through the presence of K + ions in KMS-1 and formation of surface ionic interactions between r-GO and ions through COO X or S X (X denoted Cs + and Sr 2+ ). This study highlighted the facile applicability of novel material KGO and could be used as a new adsorbent for the removal of radioactive ions.

Severe bleeding from deep and irregular wounds poses a significant challenge in prehospital and surgical settings. To address this issue, we developed a novel chitosan-based hemostatic dressing with a magnetic targeting mechanism using Fe 3 O 4 , termed bovine serum albumin-modified Fe 3 O 4 embedded in porous α-ketoglutaric acid/chitosan (BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS). This dressing enhances hemostasis by magnetically guiding the agent to the wound site. In vitro, the hemostatic efficacy of BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS is comparable to that of commercial chitosan (Celox™) and is not diminished by the modification. In vivo, BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS demonstrated superior hemostatic performance and reduced blood loss compared to Celox™. The hemostatic mechanism of BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS includes the concentration of solid blood components through water absorption, adherence to blood cells, and activation of the endogenous coagulation pathway. Magnetic field targeting is crucial in directing the dressing to deep hemorrhagic sites. Additionally, safety assessments have confirmed the biocompatibility and biodegradability of BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS. In conclusion, we introduce a novel approach to modify chitosan using magnetic guidance for effective hemostasis, positioning BSA/Fe 3 O 4 @KA/CS as a promising candidate for managing various wounds.

In this work CS-SDAEM polymer brushes with long-chain structure were synthesized, and TiO 2 /CS-SDAEM nanoparticles were prepared by modifying them on the TiO 2 surface. The prepared modified membrane can effectively degrade dyes through photocatalysis and can reduce the contamination rate of the membrane during use. The separation membrane achieves efficient removal of contamination by self-cleaning. The results of the membrane surface analysis test show that the formation of coordination bonds between o-benzenetriol of GA and TiO 2 , and the chemical reaction between CS and GA, which promote the stability between coating components. The results of filtering tests show that with the excellent anti-fouling performance of long-chain polymer brush, the photodegradability of TiO 2 and a large number of hydrophilic groups contained in GA and CS, PVDF- TiO 2 /CS-SDAEM membranes overcome the above shortcomings and achieve super-hydrophilicity, anti-fouling and self-cleaning. In addition, DFT model simulations of photocatalytic processes show that there is a charge transfer between CS and TiO 2 , which increases the width of the high light absorption band and improves the efficiency of photodegradation. Modified membranes achieve efficient self-cleaning processes and low flux decline rates, which hold great promise for use in real wastewater application scenarios.

The integration of external field-enhanced effects such as the photothermal effect has emerged as a promising strategy for improving the adsorption efficiency of adsorbents toward Cs + and Sr 2+ due to its energy saving and high efficiency. Herein, a multifunctional photothermal adsorbent is rationally designed and synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method and electrostatic assembly by combining V, W co-doped MoS 2 , P-MXene, and biomass-derived carbon aerogel (VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C). Doping of V and W induces the phase transition of MoS 2 to the more active 1T phase, providing more accessible active adsorption sites. Moreover, the 3D porous structure of the biomass-derived carbon aerogel offers sufficient water transport channels, accelerating the diffusion kinetics of Cs + and Sr 2+ . The excellent photothermal conversion capability of the VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C composite drives water evaporation, which promotes the increase of local concentrations of Cs + and Sr 2+ in the water medium. This synergistic mechanism combining phase engineering and photothermal enhancement collectively contributes to the excellent performance in Cs + and Sr 2+ capture. The VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C demonstrates adsorption capacities of 158.3 mg/g for Cs + and 110.1 mg/g for Sr 2+ within 1 h, respectively, under photothermal enhancement. Simultaneously, the adsorbent exhibits excellent ion selectivity and reusability. The possible adsorption mechanisms mainly involve surface complexation and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C demonstrates a long-term solar-driven desalination capability with an evaporation rate of 1.98 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in natural seawater. Notably, the VWMoS 2 /P-MXene/C also shows promising application potential for dye removal and oil adsorption. This work provides a universal strategy for designing multifunctional integrated adsorbents and promotes their practical applications in radioactive wastewater treatment and seawater desalination

This study presents an innovative approach to membrane fabrication by integrating electrospinning with surface modification techniques to develop a novel dual-layer protective membrane system. The key innovation lies in the incorporation of photothermally responsive nanocomposites, enabling multifunctional membrane performance. The primary layer is a PVDF-PNIPAAm thermoresponsive matrix synthesized by radical polymerization, integrated with BN@PDA-Ag nanosheets. This design combines Ag nanoparticles’ photothermal conversion and BN’s thermal conductivity to regulate pore size via PNIPAAm chain conformational changes induced by temperature. The secondary layer, comprising CS@CNT and PVDF, significantly enhances membrane hydrophilicity and antifouling properties through chitosan’s hydrophilic groups and chelating capabilities. The membrane demonstrates self-cleaning, adaptive filtration, antifouling and high flux, representing a significant advancement in smart membrane technology for water treatment applications.

The moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) process has drawn more attention as a promising biological wastewater treatment process . Nevertheless, achieving quick start-up and microbial biofilm formation remains a significant challenge. Consequently, the present study investigated a novel chitosan-based natural sludge (CS@NGS) seeding strategy for the accelerated start-up of MBBR. Three identical bioreactors were employed; the first bioreactor was without sludge seed as the control (BR1), the second was inoculated only with sludge (BR2), and the third was inoculated with CS@NGS according to the proposed seeding method (BR3). All bioreactors were utilised to treat simulated recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) effluent. Resultantly, the CS@NGS shortened the start-up period from over twenty to seven days due to the enhanced initial microbial adhesion and biofilm formation. Under optimal conditions, the ammonium removal in BR3 approached 100%, which was relatively higher than BR2 (96.35 ± 1.12%) and BR1 (92.56 ± 2.17%). Moreover, a low nitrite accumulation was exhibited in the effluents, approximately ≤0.03 mg L −1 . The process performance correlated positively with core bacteria from the genera Nakamurella , Hyphomicrobium , Nitrospira , Paenarthrobacter , Rhodococcus , and Stenotrophobacter . The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results demonstrated that the CS@NGS enhanced the expressions of amo A, nxr B, nir K, nir S, nar G, and nap A nitrogen metabolism-related functional genes to varying degrees. The present study findings can assist the rapid start-up of aquaculture biofilters utilised to solve high nitrite and ammonia accumulation in recirculated water from industrial RAS.

The design and syntheses of new birefringent crystals will be of great importance in commercial applications and materials science. A series of ultraviolet (UV) birefringent crystals, AX·(H2SeO3)n (A = K, Cs; X = Cl, Br; n = 1, 2), with large sizes up to 23 × 6 × 3 mm3, was successfully synthesized by simple aqueous solution method. These four compounds belong to three different space groups. Isomorphic KCl·(H2SeO3)2 and CsCl·(H2SeO3)2 crystallize in the P1¯ space group, while CsBr·(H2SeO3)2 and CsCl·H2SeO3 crystallize in the P21/m and P21/c space groups, respectively. They exhibit cocrystal structures composed of [2(H2SeO3)]∞ and [AX]∞ frameworks, ingeniously inheriting the large optical anisotropy of selenite and the wide band gap of alkali metal halide. And it proves that these compounds indeed possess large birefringence (0.1–0.17 at 532 nm) and short UV cutoff edges (227–239 nm), achieving a balance of optical properties. This research affords a simple and viable strategy for the design and syntheses of new UV birefringent crystals. Besides, it is also found that the n value and ionic size (A and X ions) have important influences on the crystal structures and optical properties of AX·(H2SeO3)n. And this will promote further understanding of the alkali metal halide selenite family.

Herein, a versatile amorphous-to-crystalline transformation (ACT) strategy is described, to furnish various metals (Cu, Co, Ni, Cs, and Y) based atomically dispersed catalysts (ADCs) on thin holey 2D Al 2 O 3 . This approach, which involves adjusting reactant stoichiometry, enables the continuous modulation of particle size of ADCs at an atomical level, giving the ultrafine products as single atom, cluster, or nanoparticle catalysts. This synthesis method allows a straightforward analysis and comparison of the reactivity of the ADCs catalysts based on the dispersion of the active metal. In the case of Cu, the cluster catalyst 0.2-Cu/Al 2 O 3 outperforms the single atom catalyst 0.1-Cu/Al 2 O 3 and the nanoparticle catalyst 0.3-Cu/Al 2 O 3 in the oxidation of refractory organic molecules, thanks to its superior electron transport and surface adsorption properties. These findings are well supported by the Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Additionally, this method facilitates the preparation of atomic clusters with a very small size of 0.5–1 nm, composed of just a few atoms, as exemplified by Ni-based ADCs. The developed synthesis enriches the library of ADCs and demonstrates the potential of amorphous-to-crystalline transformation in creating advanced ultrasmall functional materials.
