Magnetic composites Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC and Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC/GO were one-step synthesized and characterized. It was found that GO can help Fe 3 O 4 encapsulated more homogeneously. Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC particles were “sea-island” structure, while Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC/GO particles were uniform spherical structure with a bigger size. It can be explained by the excellent hydrophilicity of GO. IBU loading and IBU release of different particles were compared. Fe 3 O 4 /Cu-BTC/GO was found to have larger IBU loading and better IBU release. It was concluded that addition of GO changed the adsorption mechanic for IBU, which strengthened the IBU loading and led to the lower IBU release.

The colorimetric sensor has made great achievements in glucose sensing and diabetes prediction due to its simplicity, visualization, and lack of need for sophisticated instruments. The noninvasive sampling method has received more attention. Herein, a colorimetric agarose gel sensor was constructed by combining Cu-doped carbon nanowires (CuCNWs) with excellent peroxidase-like activity and glucose oxidase (GOx). CuCNWs can effectively catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with a maximum catalytic rate of 12.5 × 10–8 M s–1, which is superior to most nanomaterials reported. The modification by PVP can significantly improve the stability of CuCNWs under physiological conditions without affecting their catalytic activity. By introducing GOx, the sensitive detections of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose in a wide range with the limit of detection as low as 30 nM and 0.2 μM can be achieved. Notably, the colorimetric agarose gel sensor exhibits a higher sensitivity than commercial test strips in detecting glucose in solution. Furthermore, it was applied to the detection of urine glucose. Diabetic urine can be easily distinguished from normal urine by judging color changes with the naked eye. This work is of great significance in guiding the construction of colorimetric agarose gel sensors and expands the applications of nanozymes in the biosensing fields.

To improve the biological fouling and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V (TC4) in marine environments, copper-containing titanium dioxide (TiO 2 (Cu)) films were prepared by magnetron sputtering TiO 2 (Cu) powder targets. The morphologies of the films showed that they became rough and coarse from 1.6 nm of the TiO 2 film to approximately 9 nm of the TiO 2 (Cu) films, which might be owing to the increase in the deposition rates from 1.33 to 2.08 nm/min. No diffraction orientations of the TiO 2 and Cu phases were found compared to those of the TiO 2 (Cu) powder. Ti, O, and Cu were detected using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm the composition of the films. The ratio of Cu 2+ increased as the Cu content of the films increased, whereas that of Cu/Cu + scarcely changed. The TiO 2 and TiO 2 (Cu) films exhibited photocatalytic effects and their photocatalytic intensities decreased as the Cu content increased. Hydrophobicity was enhanced by the addition of Cu to the film. The antibiological fouling effect of the TiO 2 (Cu) films remained unchanged as the Cu/Ti ratio varied. Compared with those of TC4 , the corrosion current densities of the TiO 2 (Cu) films decreased by one order of magnitude and the corrosion potentials increased by 350 mV in artificial seawater , indicating that the corrosion resistance of TiO 2 (Cu)/TC4 was improved. Importantly, Cu was in abundance in the films for both antibiological and corrosion resistance functions owing to the saturated ratio of Cu/Cu + irrespective of the Cu/Ti ratio in the films.

With the rapid development of electronics, additive manufacturing of complex three-dimensional microscale metal and alloy structures has emerged as one of the future directions for advanced technologies. In this study, a localized electrochemical deposition technique was developed which enables the fabrication of microscale three-dimensional metal structures in an ambient environment. Notably, we investigated the effects of voltage, initial electrode gap, and electrolyte composition on the deposition of Cu-Ni alloy. Furthermore, we successfully fabricated Cu-Ni equiatomic micro-columns, providing possibilities for the micro/nanoscale fabrication of commercial K-Monel copper. Finally, based on these foundations, we successfully shaped overhanging structures with various angles as well as an "H" structure using a rotating cathode substrate, demonstrating their potential in the fabrication of Cu-Ni alloy micro components.

The development of Cu(II) ionophores for targeted disruption of aberrant redox homeostasis in cancer cells has been considered an appealing strategy in the field of anticancer research. This study presents the first identification of tanshinone I ( Ts1 ), a natural o -quinone, as a Cu(II) ionophore. Structure-activity relationship studies on tanshinones and mechanistic investigations reveal that the presence of Cu(II) effectively promotes the tautomerization of Ts1 from its diketo to keto-enol forms, thereby facilitating its sequential proton-loss Cu(II) chelation, and enabling it to function as a Cu(II) ionophore due to its structural features including the presence of an o -quinone moiety, a benzyl hydrogen, and a large conjugated system. The unique property allows Ts1 to preferentially induce copper accumulation in human hepatoma HepG2 cells over human umbilical vein endothelial cells, by releasing copper driven by reduced glutathione (GSH). This copper accumulation leads to a reduction in the GSH-to-oxidized glutathione ratio and the generation of reactive oxygen species, ultimately triggering apoptosis of HepG2 cells. The findings not only provide support for o -quinones as innovative types of anticancer Cu(II) ionophores, but also shed light on the previously unrecognized role of Ts1 as a potent Cu(II) ionophore for eradicating cancer cells by selectively disrupting their redox regulation programs, resembling a "Trojan horse".

This study introduces a novel nonenzymatic glucose electrochemical sensor based on palladium-copper bimetallic aerogels (Pd–Cu BMA) synthesized through a facile self-assembly reduction method. The Pd–Cu BMA exhibits a three-dimensional network structure formed by interconnected nanowires, which facilitates rapid electron transfer and offers abundant active sites for catalysis. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Pd and Cu, the Pd–Cu (2:1) aerogels demonstrates remarkable electrocatalytic activity and stability under neutral conditions. Specifically, this sensor achieves a rapid response to glucose oxidation at an applied potential of 0 V, with a linear detection range up to 20 mM and a limit of detection as low as 43.4 μM. Notably, it maintains high catalytic activity over one month and shows excellent anti-interference performance against common physiological interferents. For practical application, the sensor can accurately detect additional glucose in diluted serum within the concentration range of 1–20 mM and in undiluted serum from 1 to 4 mM, thereby validating its potential for real-time monitoring of glucose levels in physiological samples. This innovative design of Pd–Cu bimetallic aerogels not only enhances the performance of nonenzymatic glucose sensors but also paves the way for the development of advanced materials for point-of-care diagnostics.

In this work, Molybdenum trioxide and conventional copper particles were used as precursors, reduced in hydrogen atmosphere. Then Cu@Mo Powders were successfully synthesized. Effects of reduction temperature on the microstructure of the composite powders and the performance of the intermediate product (molybdenum dioxide) were investigated. Results show that 700°C is the optimal reduction temperature, because Mo is reduced from its oxide and forms a coating layer on the surface of copper particles tightly without serious crack. Mo-20wt.% Cu composite powders where Cu is coated uniformly with continuous molybdenum layer are successfully obtained by co-reduction method.

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) are potentially useful in tumor theranostics, but the poor stability, high toxicity, and rapid removal by the immune system seriously limit their theranostic applications. In our study, we demonstrate the fabrication of Cu(II)-doped polydopamine-coated AuNR (AuNR@CuPDA), which significantly improves the potentials in tumor theranostics. Besides the improvement of physiological stability and biocompatibility, the PDA shell increases the photothermal performance and prolongs the blood circulation time of AuNRs. The half-life of AuNRs during blood circulation increases from 0.7 to 4.5 h after PDA coating, and the injected dose per gram of tumor tissue is 4.6% ID g–1 for AuNR@CuPDA. In addition to computer tomography imaging, the loading of Cu(II) in PDA shell endows AuNR@CuPDA with magnetic resonance imaging function. Cu(II) doped in PDA shell also exhibits chemotherapeutic behavior, and the tumor inhibitor rate is 31.2%. Further combining 808 nm laser-driven photothermal therapy, tumors were completely ablated, and no recurrence was observed. Liver and renal functions tests and histological analysis of major organs confirm that AuNR@CuPDA is in good safety.

A facile one-step method was developed to promote the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CRR) activities to form the C2 products (C2H4 and C2H5OH) via the capping agent and organic solvent-free involvement of copper (Cu) on graphitic carbon nitride (GCN). By tuning the using amount of the Cu precursor, Cu-GCN-0.2 exhibited a total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of more than 86.69 ± 0.73% for the C1 species (CO, CH4, HCOOH) and C2 species (C2H5OH, C2H4) as the CRR products when the electrolysis was carried out at an overpotential of 0.7 V (vs RHE) even after 12 h electrocatalysis and at a ratio of about 1:1 for C2/C1. Further investigation confirms that the enhanced CRR activities can be ascribed to three aspects: Firstl’y, smartl’y regulation of the Cu involvement during the synthesis of GCN created the CRR active site, which enables more CO2 to be adsorbed and activated at a lower overpotential to participate in the C–C couple procedures. Secondly, the neglected HER active site was formed when Cu was involved, which enables the well-maintained proton generation and adsorption activities for the proton-coupled electron transfer procedures, leading to the promoted C2/C1 ratio. Thirdly, the decreased electronic resistance accelerates the electronic transfer speed, which enables a faster reaction rate and a promoted long-term durability performance. This research provides a facile method for the rational construction and preparation of the electrocatalyst toward large-scale utilization in sustainable conversion and application.

For the large-scale development of zinc-air batteries (ZABs), designing efficient, and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is crucial yet challenging. Herein, CuFe nanoparticles coupled with Cu–N x active sites co-anchored on 2D nitrogen–doped porous carbon nanosheets (CuFe@Cu–N–C) were obtained by the pyrolysis of Cu–MOF–74, nitrogen source, and ferric salt. The 2D porous carbon structure and the coupling effect between CuFe nanoparticles and Cu–Nx active sites endowed the CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst with excellent ORR electrocatalytic performance. Consequently, the CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst exhibited enhanced ORR activity with a higher half–wave potential than Cu–N–C, surpassing even that of the commercial 20 % Pt/C by 21 mV in alkaline media. Additionally, the CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst exhibited superior ORR stability to commercial 20 % Pt/C. Primary ZABs assembled with the CuFe@Cu–N–C as the cathode ORR electrocatalyst also showed excellent electrochemical properties. The work shows that the prepared CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst can serve as an ideal alternative to Pt-based catalysts for ZABs.

Metal nanoparticles have been found to exhibit a broad spectrum of antibacterial activities, yet not all metals possess the captivating plasmonic properties necessary for effective interaction with incident light. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of synergistically enhancing the Cu-induced antibacterial activity through the incorporation of plasmonic photothermal therapy by hybridlike anchoring the Cu component on a gold (Au) nanoplate that can effectively absorb near-infrared light. To fabricate the Janus structure, plate-like Au seeds were mixed with copper(ii) nitrate, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, ascorbic acid, and hexamethylenetetramine, resulting in the formation of Au–Cu Janus nanostructures (JNSs). Notably, the plasmonic absorption of Au was preserved without being hindered by the Cu coating. Photothermal measurements revealed that the temperature rise of Au–Cu JNSs aqueous suspensions could reach up to 28.3 °C in just 10 min when exposed to 1064 nm laser light at a power density of 1 W·cm–2, with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 42.14%. Additionally, they show broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, making them potential contenders for addressing a wide range of bacterial infections. Our findings demonstrate that the antibacterial performance of metal nanoparticles composed of less plasmon-active components but with exceptional antibacterial properties can be significantly enhanced by coupling them with a plasmon-active nano-antenna through a Janus architecture. The Au–Cu JNSs possess potential application prospects in photothermal therapy, broad-spectrum antibacterial treatments, biomedical imaging, targeted drug delivery, sensitive diagnostics, and the development of advanced materials.

Bimetallic gold-copper and gold-copper solid solutions nanocrystals (NCs) with orthorhombic morphologies were successfully embedded in sodium borosilicate glass; these materials were fabricated via a facile and synthetic sol-gel technique. Microstructural investigations demonstrate that the Au-Cu intermetallic nanostructure is generated in the glass host. Z-scan technique was applied to reveal the third-order nonlinear optical properties of the as-obtained glasses at the wavelength of 800 nm. The as-synthesized glasses exhibit similar nonlinear behaviors with reverse saturation absorption effects and self-focusing performances. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) values were optimized by tuning the sizes of the Au-Cu NCs. The χ (3) of Au-Cu(1), Au-Cu(2) and Au-Cu(3) measured to be 3.1 × 10 −12 , 5.4 × 10 −12 , and 4.4 × 10 −12 esu for the single-pulse energy of 1 μJ. We have discussed the nonlinear optical mechanism of Au-Cu sodium borosilicate glass that may be due to the quantum confinement effects and surface plasmon resonance effects.
