Iron (Fe3+) is one of the most essential elements in the human body; deficiency or overdose of Fe3+ may have adverse effects on human health and immunity. Hence, it is essential to establish a sensitive and selective method for ion detection. In this study, novel green fluorescent N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared with caffeic acid as the carbon source via a simple hydrothermal method. The solution of the as-prepared N-CDs exhibits 21.5% quantum yield, good salt stability, excellent water solubility, low cytotoxicity and good photobleaching resistance. The N-CDs can be used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solutions and bioimaging in living cells.

The irradiation of tumors in radiotherapy requires accurate 3D dosimetry. The Fricke 3D dosimeters, which were considered to be high potential of application in 3D dosimetry, suffer from a reduced temporal integrity of dose distribution caused by Fe 3+ ions diffusion. To overcome the drawback, we firstly synthesized a kind of amphiphilic molecules with critical micelle concentration of 0.45 g/L and hydrophile-lipophile balance value of 10, then prepared multiple emulsions by self-assembling those molecules in Fricke solution under liquid paraffin, and finally obtained Fricke hydrogel embedded with the multiple emulsions. The diffusion coefficient of Fe 3+ ions in the embedded Fricke hydrogel was measured to be 0.17 mm 2 /h. The hydrogel dosimeter exhibits considerable potential for use in dose verification applications.

Biomass transformation into high-value carbon nanomaterials plays a dual role of easing the energy material crisis and reasonable disposal of waste. Here, we employed biomass lignin as carbon source to synthesize fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) through a facile two-step method. The preparation condition is optimized at 0.3 g of acid additive and 200 ℃, 16 h of hydrothermal treatment. The resultant CQDs with the average diameter of 4.86 nm and high quantum yield of 23.68% are composed of carbon cores and surface functional groups, exhibiting the maximum green emission wavelength of 476 nm. The formation mechanism involves acid dissociation of lignin in the first step, and then the aromatic refusion of lignin fragments. The CQDs show great advantages as fluorescent nanoprobe for metal ion detection, which present an apparent and selective fluorescence quenching effect on Fe 3+ . This CQD nanoprobe has a highly sensitive response to Fe 3+ ions in the concentration of 0 ~ 300 μM with detection limit of 0.77 μM. The utilization of renewable biomass lignin in this study not only opens the avenue of the sustainable, cost-effective and mass production of CQDs, but also provides a novel alternative nanoprobe for sensing field.

A ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the detection of Fe3+ ions is achieved based on triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) luminescence. A new anthracene derivative (named as DHTPA) is designed and synthesized and reveals similar optical properties to 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) and is used as a stimuli responsive annihilator in a TTA-UC system due to its complexation ability. As a result, the UC emission can be significantly quenched by Fe3+ ions, while the phosphorescence (PL) emission of sensitizer palladium(II) octaetylporphyrin (PdOEP) remains nearly constant, which makes the PL signal an appropriate internal reference for the UC signal. The UC and ratio signals (IUC/IPL) both reveal a good linear relationship with Fe3+ ion concentration, which for the first time makes the TTA-UC system a perfect ratiometric sensor for Fe3+ ion detection. This sensing method will open a novel avenue to achieve ratiometric sensors in chemical and biological fields.

Fe 3+ and Zn 2+ ions were doped into the lattice of CeO 2 via the hydrothermal method . The microstructure and spectra features were analyzed systemically. XRD results show that the solid solubility of Fe 3+ and Zn 2+ ions in Ce 1– x (Fe 0.5 Zn 0.5 ) x O 2 can be identified as x = 0.16. The cell volumes are decreased by increasing the doped content. The TEM graphs prove that the grain size of the sample is about 10 nm, and the EDS result indicates that the doped contents are in accordance with that of the theory concentrations. Meanwhile, the doping also causes the increasing concentrations of the defects and oxygen vacancies which are supported by the XPS , Raman, UV and PL characterizations. The samples exhibit better catalytic activities for improving the hydrogen storage properties and the electrochemical kinetics of the ball milled Mg 2 Ni based composites. Further, the catalysis effects are improved by increasing the doped contents, which can be ascribed to the increasing contents of the oxygen vacancies, defects, the special electron transition states and the nature of the doped ions in CeO 2 -based solid solutions.

Fluorescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received great attention in sensing application. Here, we report the exploration of fluorescent MIL-53(Al) for highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution. The cation exchange between Fe3+ and the framework metal ion Al3+ in MIL-53(Al) led to the quenching of the fluorescence of MIL-53(Al) due to the transformation of strong-fluorescent MIL-53(Al) to weak-fluorescent MIL-53(Fe), allowing highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution with a linear range of 3–200 μM and a detection limit of 0.9 μM. No interferences from 0.8 M Na+; 0.35 M K+; 11 mM Cu2+; 10 mM Ni2+; 6 mM Ca2+, Pb2+, and Al3+; 5.5 mM Mn2+; 5 mM Co2+ and Cr3+; 4 mM Hg2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, and Mg2+; 3 mM Fe2+; 0.8 M Cl–; 60 mM NO2– and NO3–; 10 mM HPO42–, H2PO4–, SO32–, SO42–, and HCOO–; 8 mM CO32–, HCO3–, and C2O42–; and 5 mM CH3COO– were found for the detection of 150 μM Fe3+. The possible mechanism for the quenching effect of Fe3+ on the fluorescence of MIL-53(Al) was elucidated by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The specific cation exchange behavior between Fe3+ and the framework Al3+ along with the excellent stability of MIL-53(Al) allows highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution. The developed method was applied to the determination of Fe3+ in human urine samples with the quantitative spike recoveries from 98.2% to 106.2%.

Green, low-cost, and water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots were prepared under hydrothermal conditions, with a plant of Jinhua bergamot as a carbon source. The as-synthesized C-dots have better stability and relatively high photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 50.78%, along with the fluorescence lifetime of ca. 3.84 ns. Their photoluminescence can be significantly quenched by simply using the buffer solution of HAC–NaAC for Hg 2+ and Tris–HCl for Fe 3+ . Based on this, we explored for selective detection of Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ with high selectivity, fast response, low cost, and broad linear ranges of 0.01–100 μM for Hg 2+ and 0.025–100 μM for Fe 3+ , as well as low detection limits of 5.5 nM (Hg 2+ ) and 0.075 μM (Fe 3+ ) (S/N = 3).

A novel triphenylamine-based fluorescent sensor tris((4-amino)phenylduryl)amine (m-TAPA) for Fe3+/Cu2+ ion has been developed. m-TAPA shows high selectivity and sensitivity toward Fe3+/Cu2+ over alkali and transition metal ions in aqueous solution. The possible mechanism of fluorescence quenching was that Fe3+/Cu2+ can be captured by the NH2 groups of m-TAPA to form non-fluorescent complexes, resulting in strong quenching. The detection limits of Fe3+ and Cu2+ were calculated to be 230 nM and 620 nM, respectively. Furthermore, fluorescent test strips have been prepared for convenient detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions in environmental water samples, even in drinking water.

In this study, Hakka yellow wine lees carbon dots (HYWL-CDs) with an average diameter of 1.75 nm are synthesized from Hakka yellow wine lees (HYWL) via a one-pot hydrothermal method. Results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and FTIR reveal the presence of C=C and –OH in the HYWL-CDs. Additionally, the HYWL-CDs present excitation-wavelength dependence, with maximum excitation and emission wavelengths of 360 and 440 nm, respectively. The fluorescence of the HYWL-CDs can be quenched by Fe 3+ . The Fe 3+ concentration is correlated linearly with the quenching rate over a linear range of 0.6–1.1 mg/mL, and the limit of detection is 0.18 μg/mL. And phenols have been shown to be present in HYWL-CDs, and the color reaction between phenols and FeCl 3 is most likely the mechanism by which FeCl 3 causes fluorescence burst in HYWL-CDs. Moreover, the HYWL-CDs demonstrate significant potential for detecting NaFeEDTA in iron-fortified soy sauces, the linear-fit equation was y = 185.38x + 1024.6 (R 2 = 0.9995) The HYWL-CDs are loaded onto paper strips, iron-fortified straw mushroom dark soy sauce showed noticeable color changes, which allows one to differentiate normal soy sauce from iron-fortified soy sauce more conveniently and provides a new perspective for the high-value utilization of yellow wine lees.

Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising technology in the treatment of trace organic substances. However, the development of this technology is limited by membrane material selection and the long-term chemical stability and durability of the membrane. Whereas ibuprofen, a representative trace organic substances that is hydrophobic and negatively charged, poses potential environmental hazards due to its bioactivity. In this work, polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were modified with iron metal complexes via chelation reactions to achieve high rejection rates for ibuprofen. The Fe 3+ -modified composite FO membrane increased the ibuprofen rejection rate to 98.3 % compared to less than 80.0 % for the original PES membrane. Additionally, the modified membrane enhanced water flux by at least 25.0 % and reduced reverse solute flux to a maximum of 73.0 % of that of the polyamide composite membrane, while significantly improving anti-fouling capabilities. Membrane characterization results revealed that the significant enhancement in the ibuprofen retention rate was due to the addition of a negative charge by forming complexes with Fe 3+ , which increased intermolecular interactions. Additionally, the dense network structure developed by the Fe 3+ -EDTA-2Na modification also contributed to the enhanced membrane performance.

Fingerprint recognition plays a crucial role due to its uniqueness. However, conventional detection methods suffer from significant drawbacks, including high consumption, health risk and sample contamination, which restrict their practical application in the crime investigations and forensic analysis. This necessitates the development of simple, rapid, safe and environmentally-friendly alternative methods for fingerprints detection. In this work, we report the synthesis of novel cyan-emitting carbon dots (CDs) via a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction using polyethyleneimine and coumarin as precursors. The CDs enabled the clear visualization of fingerprint patterns on various substrates through immersion and spraying methods with pure water solutions, without the need for any cosolvents. Level 2 and level 3 details of fingermarks were evidently visible for individual identification within a short exposure time under 365 nm UV light irradiation. Additionally, fluorescent 3D fingerprint images revealed direct and specific evidence regarding pressing habits. Interestingly, the fluorescence intensity of CDs was tunable by adjusting the pH. We further fabricated invisible CDs ink for information encryption and decryption via UV irradiation and acid/alkali treatment. Moreover, CDs have the specific ability to sense Fe 3+ ions in actual water samples, with a detection limit of 0.613 μM and a linear range of 0–27 μM. We conducted an in-depth study on the fluorescence quenching mechanism of CDs caused by Fe 3+ ions, proposing a plausible mechanism based on a synergistic effect of dynamic quenching, static quenching and inner filter effect. Therefore, this study provides a promising multifunctional nanomaterial for fingerprint recognition, data encryption, and Fe 3+ detection.

The precise modulation of morphology engineering utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a promising avenue for the development of optimal microwave absorbers. Nonetheless, challenges emerge due to the tendency of MOF derivatives to either collapse or exist in isolation, which can impede the dissipation of electromagnetic waves (EMWs) and diminish their efficacy as microwave absorbers. Herein, this work proposes a pragmatic strategy for modulating the dielectric properties of MOF derivatives through the incorporation of Fe. By introducing Fe 3+ into the ZIF-67-on-ZIF-8 precursor, and leveraging the Kirkendall effect, a CoFe@hollow carbon nanocage (HCN) structure with a large opening is synthesized post-pyrolysis. This structure effectively addresses the issues related to the contact between MOF derivatives and their inadequate conductivity, resulting in remarkable microwave absorption (MA) performance at a low paraffin filling ratio of 15 wt%. The amount of Fe doping allows for flexible control over the dielectric properties, which are influenced by morphological evolution and the extent of graphitization, leading to tunable MA characteristics. Consequently, exceptional MA performance is achieved, characterized by both broad bandwidth absorption (6.3 GHz) and high-efficiency loss (-60.09 dB). This research elucidates an intrinsic mechanism linking microtopology to MA properties, offering significant insights that are anticipated to guide the future development of dielectric MA materials through morphology engineering methodologies.
