Mercury ions (Hg²⁺) contamination and chloramphenicol (CAP) residue in food pose significant threats to human health and food safety. This study explores the use of nitrogen and sulfur-doped blue fluorescent carbon dots (B-CDs) as a fluorescence-based sensor for the detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) and mercury ions (Hg²⁺), which are critical contaminants in both environmental and food safety contexts. B-CDs were synthesized and characterized, and their performance as sensors was evaluated through fluorescence intensity measurements in response to varying concentrations of CAP and Hg²⁺. The linear correlation coefficients (R²) for both CAP and Hg²⁺ detection were 0.9958 and 0.9944, respectively, demonstrating a strong linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and analyte concentration. The detection limits for CAP and Hg²⁺ were calculated as 0.31 μM/L and 1.75 μM/L, highlighting the high sensitivity of B-CDs. Additionally, the sensor's performance was tested under various conditions, including changes in temperature, salinity, and light exposure, showing excellent stability and photostability. This work provides a simple, efficient, and highly sensitive sensor for detecting trace amounts of CAP and Hg²⁺, with significant potential for applications in environmental monitoring and food safety. The findings may pave the way for the development of more advanced, cost-effective, and portable fluorescence-based sensors for broader analytical purposes.

Herein, hydrothermal method was used to prepare a series of multi-color polythiophene modified carbon quantum dots. Under UV excitation, fluorescence their maximum emission wavelengths appear at 612 nm, 570 nm, and 540 nm respectively. The prepared CD-BTH and CD-BN can have specific detection of Au 3+ and Hg 2+ through fluorescence quenching effect. The detection limits for Au 3+ are 3 nM and 5.4 nM respectively, and for Hg 2+ are 23 nM and 90 nM respectively. CD-KN detects Au 3+ specifically through fluorescence resonance, with a detection limit of 33 nM. Under the interference of other metal ions, three types of polythiophene modified quantum carbon dots exhibit excellent selectivity for the responsive ions. Meanwhile, this article also elucidates the law that as the electron withdrawing ability of the side chains of polythiophene derivatives increasing, the fluorescence emission peaks of the prepared polythiophene modified carbon dots shifts red and the fluorescence quantum yield is higher.

The development of appropriate molecular tools to monitor different mercury speciation, especially CH3Hg+, in living organisms is attractive because its persistent accumulation and toxicity are very harmful to human health. Herein, we develop a novel activity-based ratiometric SERS nanoprobe to selectively monitor Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ in aqueous media and in vivo. In this nanoprobe, a new bifunctional Raman probe bis-s-s′-[(s)-(4-(ethylcarbamoyl)phenyl)boronic acid] (b-(s)-EPBA) was synthesized and immobilized on the surface of gold nanoparticles via a Au–S bond, in which the phenylboronic acid group was employed as the recognition unit for Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ based on the Hg-promoted transmetalation reaction. In the presence of Hg2+ and CH3Hg+, a new surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) peak aroused from of C–Hg appeared at 1080 cm–1, and the SERS intensity at 1002 cm–1 belonged to the B–O symmetric stretching decreased simultaneously. The quantitative tracking of Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ was realized based on the SERS intensity ratio (I1080/I1303) with rapid response (∼4 min) and high sensitivity, with detection limits of 10.05 and 25.13 nM, respectively. Moreover, the SERS sensor was used for the quantitative detection of Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ in four actual water samples with a high accuracy and excellent recovery. More importantly, cell imaging experiments showed that AuNPs@b-(s)-EPBA could quantitatively detect intracellular CH3Hg+ and had a good concentration dependence in ratiometric SERS imaging. Meanwhile, we demonstrated that AuNPs@b-(s)-EPBA could detect and image CH3Hg+ in zebrafish. We anticipate that AuNPs@b-(s)-EPBA could potentially be used to study the physiological functions related to CH3Hg+ in the future.

Efficient and selective removal of Hg 2+ from Hg-contained wastewater remains a critical challenge in environmental remediation and advanced water treatment. In this study, a series of Hg 2+ -imprinted polymers were designed using bidentate S/N-coordinating allylthiourea (ATU) as the functional monomer. Different structural strategies were applied to enhance their selectivity and adsorption efficiency toward Hg 2+ . Comparative analysis of the structural features and adsorption behaviors of the polymers revealed effect of the imprinting effect and surface imprinting on Hg 2+ capture. SEM and BET results demonstrated that ATU-IIP/SiO 2 possessed a higher specific surface area and a more open porous structure, which facilitated the full exposure of binding sites and significantly enhanced Hg 2+ adsorption performance. Adsorption experiments showed that ATU-IIP/SiO 2 exhibited a rare stepwise adsorption process, with a twice the adsorption capacity that of ATU-IIP and reaching 70 % of equilibrium within 5 min. FTIR and XPS analyses identified S/N-containing groups ( CS NH ) dominated Hg 2+ coordination. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirmed the positive role of Hg 2+ in promoting the transformation from C S to C S, supporting a dual-site synergistic coordination mechanism. Under coexisting ion interference, imprinted polymers achieved 84.3 % Hg 2+ removal and maintained over 80 % recovery after five reuse cycles, while exhibiting over 99 % Hg 2+ recovery from PVC industrial wastewater. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms of recognition, binding, and separation of Hg 2+ , offering a theoretical basis for its efficient removal from typical industrial wastewater.

Hg2+ is one of the most toxic chemical species in the water environment, and thus developing a new fluorescent covalent organic framework for both the detection and removal of Hg2+ is highly desirable. Herein, a fluorescent composite, termed TpPa-1 COF@CDs, was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization method using an imine covalent organic framework as the supporting material and carbon dots as the fluorescent sensor element. The crystallinity, porosity, rich functional receptors (hydroxyl and amino groups), thermal stability and fluorescent properties of TpPa-1 COF@CDs were characterized. The results showed that TpPa-1 COF@CDs exhibited a good detection and removal performance for Hg2+, which was evidenced by its high sensitivity (LOD = 0.75 μg L−1), superior selectivity, large adsorption capacity (235 mg g−1), fast adsorption rate (30 min equilibrium time) and good regeneration (at least five cycles). More importantly, the simple functional monomer, short reaction time and metal-free raw material made TpPa-1 COF@CDs reliable, cost effective and eco-friendly. This research demonstrated the facile construction of a functional covalent organic framework composite for water environmental remediation technologies of metal pollution.

Core-shell-shell SiO 2 @LaVO 4 :RE@SiO 2 -MABA-Si microspheres enable dual-probe Hg 2+ /Cu 2+ detection. • Detection limits of 0.14 µM for Hg²⁺ and 92.96 nM for Cu 2+ with 8–20 min response time. • IFE coupled with coordination governs selective quenching of Eu 3+ (616 nm) and Tb 3+ (543 nm) emission. • Robust performance across pH 3.0–12, 7 days stability, and 98–103.83% real-water recoveries. A dual-channel sensing system based on core-shell-shell SiO 2 @LaVO 4 :RE@SiO 2 -MABA-Si (RE = Eu, Tb) microspheres was developed for the selective detection of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous media. The microspheres were synthesized by grafting MABA-Si onto SiO 2 @LaVO 4 :RE@SiO 2 , yielding a triple-layered architecture (~105 nm SiO 2 core, ~4 nm LaVO 4 :RE luminescent shell, ~14 nm SiO 2 -MABA-Si functional shell). Sensing relies on the inner filter effect (IFE) coupled with synergistic coordination: MABA-Si captures Hg 2+ or Cu 2+ , and the resulting metal-ligand complexes quench the Eu 3+ (616 nm) or Tb 3+ (543 nm) emission, respectively. The Tb 3+ -based probe detected Cu 2+ with a limit of 92.96 nM and an 8 min response, while the Eu 3+ -based probe detected Hg 2+ with a limit of 0.14 μM and a 20 min response. The Hg 2+ system showed reversible "on-off-on" switching with L -cysteine. The SiO 2 shell maintained stable luminescence over pH 3.0 −12 and 7 days storage. Real water tests gave recoveries of 99 −103.83% (Hg 2+ ) and 98 −102.50% (Cu 2+ ) with RSDs below 2.4%. This platform offers a practical approach for dual-ion heavy metal monitoring. Developing a peroxidase-like activity modulator to accurately regulate peroxidase-like activity has always been the primary challenge to be addressed. External stimulation can effectively modulate the electronic structure of metal-centered active sites, which optimizes the chemical reaction path and changes the peroxidase-like activity. Herein, in a weak acidic environment (pH = 6.0), we found that the electron transfer may occur between silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) anchored on the surface of reduced graphene oxide/poly(ethylene glycol) (rGO/PEG) nanosheets and added mercury(II) (Hg2+), which can induce the formation of mercurous ions (Hg(I), Hg22+). Hg(I) with regulatory catalytic performance can stimulate the expression of the active sites of Ag NPs via optimizing the electronic structure so that the adsorbed H2O2 molecules can efficiently produce reactive oxygen intermediates (•OH and •O2–) and be stabilized on the surface of Ag NPs. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the generated Hg(I) significantly reduced the Gibbs free energy of the chemical reaction and provided a pathway for electron transfer, which effectively enhanced the peroxidase-like activity. Based on this finding, a visual colorimetric sensor was constructed to detect Hg2+ with a detection limit of 19.7 nM in the range of 0.02–5.0 μM. Finally, we confirmed that the developed rGO/PEG/Ag nanohybrids can quantitatively detect Hg2+ in the environment. This method is reliable and has potential advantages in the environmental application field.

The fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs)-based sensor has been attracting great attention in recent years. There are still big challenges in the preparation and application of FONs-based sensor. In this study, a FONs-based sensor was designed and developed through facile hydrothermal process using 3-perylenecarboxaldehyde (PlCA) as the fluorophore and L-methionine (Met) as the recognition site for mercury ions. According to the experimental results, the fluorescence intensity of the as-prepared PlCA-M would decrease when adding Hg 2+ and the mechanism was extrapolated to be photoinduced electron transfer inducing by specific coordination interaction. The acquired PlCA-M−based sensor was used to monitor Hg 2+ in several real samples (environmental water, tea, and apple) with the limit of detection being 60 nM. Remarkably, a visual detection device based on FONs , SDS-PAAG (sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel) @PlCA-M was firstly constructed and successfully used to Hg 2+ semi-quantitation by naked eyes. In addition, the acquired FONs was applied into imaging tool for security information detection and identified as solid-state luminescent material for the first time.

Dual-emission carbon dots were synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal pyrolysis of citric acid and polyethyleneimine in the presence of rhodamine B at 160 °C for 5 h. The carbon dots have an average diameter of 2.51 nm with rhodamine moiety on their surface. Two emission bands centered at 447 and 581 nm are exhibited in their fluorescence spectra excited at 360 nm, and the former is sensitive while the latter is insensitive to Hg 2+ and pH. Glutathione (GSH) can recover the fluorescence quenched by Hg 2+ . Therefore, the dual-emission carbon dots were developed as a fluorescent ratiometric probe employing the ratio of the two intensities at 447 and 581 nm ( R I447/I581 ) as the signal for the determinations of pH, Hg 2+ , and GSH. In the range of 5.0–10.0, a good linear relationship between R I447/I581 and pH was built with a regression equation of R I447/I581 = 11.95–0.56 pH ( R 2 = 0.998). In the range from 0.0 to 8.0 μM, an excellent linear relationship between R I447/I581 and the concentration of Hg 2+ was obtained with a calibration equation of R I447/I581 = 6.2317–0.4458c ( R 2 = 0.995) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.24 μM. In the range from 1.0 to 10.0 μM, a linear equation, R I447/I581 = 1.9133–0.4157c ( R 2 = 0.995), was calibrated between R I447/I581 and the concentration of glutathione with a LOD of 0.27 μM. The recoveries for the determinations of Hg 2+ and GSH in real samples were in the ranges of 94.6 to 103.8% and 94.3 to 104.2%, respectively.

Improving the water solubility of natural product cellulose and using it to treat heavy metal ions is very important. In this work, cellulose-based fluorescent probes containing BODIPY fluorophore were synthesized by simple chemical method, which realized the selective recognition and removal of Hg 2+ /Hg 2 2+ ions in an aqueous system. Firstly, fluorescent small molecule (BOK-NH 2 ) bearing -NH 2 group was synthesized through Knoevenagel condensation reaction between BO-NH 2 and cinnamaldehyde. Secondly, via the etherification of -OH on the cellulose, substituents bearing -C ≡ CH groups with different lengths at the end are grafted on the cellulose. Finally, cellulose-based probes (P1, P2, and P3) were prepared by amino-yne click reaction. The solubility of cellulose is improved greatly, especially the cellulose derivative with branched long chains has excellent solubility in water (P3). Benefiting from the improved solubility, P3 could be processed into solutions, films, hydrogels, and powders. Upon the addition of Hg 2+ /Hg 2 2+ ions, the fluorescence intensity enhanced, which are “turn-on” probes. At the same time, the probes could be utilized as efficient adsorbents for Hg 2+ /Hg 2 2+ ions. The removal efficiency of P3 for Hg 2+ /Hg 2 2+ is 79.7 %/82.1 %, and the adsorption capacity is 159.4 mg·g −1 /164.2 mg·g −1 . These cellulose-based probes are expected to be employed in the treatment of polluted environments.

Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized novel green-emitting fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) through cross amide formation of two precursors, benzene-1,3,5-triamine trihydrochloride and trimethyl 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate, under hydrothermal treatment . The average particle size of the CDs was ∼2.7 nm with graphitic carbon structures. The obtained CDs showed good photoluminescent properties with a quantum yield of up to 11.2%. The carbon dots showed good fluorescence sensitivity and selectivity for Hg 2+ , and the LOD and LOQ values were 17.5 pM and 58.3 pM in the range of 0.1–0.8 μM, which could be successfully applied to Hg 2+ detection in real water samples as well as intracellular Hg 2+ fluorescence detection .

Using Hg2+-induced umpolung reaction and aggregation induced emission (AIE), we have rationally developed a water-soluble fluorescent probe 2,2′-(((4-(4,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)methylene)bis(sulfanediyl))diethanol (MPIPBS) for Hg2+ detection. MPIPBS was found to have high selectivity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ detection. The mechanism of MPIPBS response to Hg2+ was verified by 1H NMR titration, HPLC, and HRMS spectroscopy. The detection limit was examined to be 1.45 nM, which is lower than most reported probes for Hg2+. Taking advantage of excellent optical properties of AIEgen, a paper based sensor for Hg2+ detection was fabricated by immobilizing the MPIPBS on Waterman test paper. Meanwhile, MPIPBS showed satisfactory analytical performance in real water and urine samples. Further, thanks to the high water solubility, cell membrane permeability and low cytotoxicity, MPIPBS was further used to detect Hg2+ both in living cells and zebrafish. We anticipate that the prepared probe was available to detect Hg2+ in environment and biosamples.
