Fabrication of a large-area, flexible micro-pyramid PET film SERS substrate and its application in the detection of dye in herbal tea

Xi Liu,Meizhen Huang,Jie Chen,Lili Kong,Keihui Wang

A simple method, based on a roll-to-roll ultraviolet micro-pyramid imprinting technique and a nanoparticle self-assembling process in aqueous solution, to fabricate a large-area, flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) polyethylene glycol terephthalate substrate is proposed. The SERS substrate is demonstrated to be of high sensitivity. The detection concentration of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) measured by a portable Raman spectrometer is down to 10−9 mol l−1. The relative standard deviation values of different spots and different substrates are less than 13%. In addition, the feasibility for rapid detection of dye in herbal tea based on this SERS substrate and a portable Raman spectrometer is investigated. Three industrial dyes are employed to simulate the dyeing process. It is presented that R6G of 4.8\times {{10}^{-7}} g ml−1, malachite green of 10−6 g ml−1 and Auramine O of 10−6 g ml−1 in herbal tea could be detected rapidly. The experimental results imply that this method could be potentially applied in the field of dyed herbal tea detection.

A discovery for phosphorus valence and unsaturated bonds in polyphosphate/polyphosphonate: Promotion or inhibition for its flame-retardant mode of action in PET

Bo Xu,Meng Jia,Dong Wang,Siheng Zhao,Shouao Zhu,Lijun Qian

Four polyphosphate/polyphosphonate flame retardants (PAP, POP, PAP-UB and POP-UB) have been designed and synthesized to study the effects of phosphorus valence states and the presence of unsaturated carbon-carbon double bonds on self-cross-linking impacting flame-retardant modes of action. It was found that phosphorus valence states affect the proportion of flame-retardant activity between the gas phase and condensed phase. A phosphonate containing +3-valence phosphorus is primarily effective as a gas-phase flame-retardant, while the one containing +5-valence phosphorus mainly exerted an impact in the condensed phase. The introduction of an unsaturated bond enhances the carbon-forming effect promoted by polyphosphates/polyphosphonates in a degrading polymer matrix and increases the melt viscosity for blends at high temperature. The phosphorus-containing fragments which might have been released into the gas phase are locked in the condensed phase due to C C bonds cross-linking, thus forming more high-quality phosphorus-rich char layers. This effect balances the distribution of gas-phase and condense-phase flame-retardant effects and is especially obvious in PET/polyphosphonate blends containing +3-valence phosphorus, which originally plays mainly the role of a gas-phase flame retardant . PET blends containing unsaturated carbon-carbon double bonds display better carbon formation, flame-retardant activity and anti-dripping behavior than these do without this feature.

Formation of Bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate from waste plastic using ionic liquid as catalyst

Tianlin Wang,Xu Gong,Chuanchao Shen,Guangren Yu,Xiaochun Chen

The accumulation of waste PET leads to serious environmental problem. PET degradation has been hot topic and is studied by lots of researchers. At present, numerous catalysts have been developed, among which ionic liquid catalyst is attractive due to its excellent advantages like convenient recycling and highly catalytic effect. In this work, a series of ionic liquids based on 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) were synthesized and used as catalyst of PET degradation. The influence of different structure of cation and different metal salt on PET degradation were studied. DFT calculation showed that the interaction between the ionic liquid and ethylene glycol can be changed by adjustment of the structure of the cation. At optimal condition, using [C 6 TMG]Cl/2ZnCl 2 as catalyst, PET conversion was 100% and BHET yield was 92.7%. To our best knowledge, this is first report about ionic liquid catalyst of PET degradation with superior BHET yield. Catalytic effect of [C 6 TMG]Cl/2ZnCl 2 did not obviously decrease after it was reused for six times. Moreover, the degradation of commercial beverage bottles was investigated using [C 6 TMG]Cl/2ZnCl 2 as the catalyst, the BHET yield of 84% was obtained, and the quality purity of the product was 90%. In addition, possible mechanism was explored.

Spatially orthogonal CeOx-Zn sites on diatomite-aerogel-derived hierarchical HZSM-5 enable gated dechlorination and BTX-selective upcycling of PVC/PET mixed plastics

Jie Li,Yuxiang Yang,Guangtong Xu,Xiangxu Du,Anbang Dai,Yangchuan Ke

Spatially orthogonal CeO x –Zn sites were integrated into aerogel-derived hierarchical HZSM-5. • CeO x shifted HCl release and chlorinated-intermediate conversion to lower temperatures. • Zn promoted BTX-selective aromatization of dechlorinated and oxygenated fragments. • Accessibility-weighted bifunctional catalysis enabled cleaner and higher-value PVC/PET upcycling. Catalytic upcycling of chlorine-containing mixed plastics remains limited by the intrinsic conflict between efficient dechlorination and high-selectivity aromatization. Here we report a spatially orthogonal CeO x –Zn/Aero-40 catalyst derived from a diatomite-aerogel-templated hierarchical HZSM-5 support, in which CeO x -rich outer mesopores and Zn-containing MFI channels are integrated into a gated tandem architecture. The hierarchized support decreased the mean particle size from 386 ± 42 nm for Conv-40–274 ± 31 nm for Aero-40 and retained a shortened crystallite length of 289 ± 24 nm after dual-site loading, while exposing 3.01 wt% surface Ce and 1.86 wt% surface Zn on CeO x –Zn/Aero-40. Under the optimized two-stage conditions, CeO x -Zn/Aero-40 affords a BTX yield of 64.0 wt% on the initial dry-polymer feed basis, a BTX selectivity of 90.0% within the quantified liquid aromatics, and a dechlorination efficiency of 98.9%. Product-family analysis showed that aromatics rose to 71% whereas organochlorines fell to 2%; chlorine balance further demonstrated that 88% of chlorine was released as gaseous HCl, with only 3% remaining as oil-phase organochlorine. Taken together, the time-resolved spectroscopic/thermal analyses, probe experiments and kinetic measurements are consistent with a functionally staged mechanism in which Ce-associated sites facilitate low-temperature HCl elimination and chlorine management, whereas Zn-associated acid environments favor downstream cyclization/dehydrogenation-aromatization toward BTX. The DFT calculations support the intrinsic feasibility of these site-specific elementary steps but do not, by themselves, establish dynamic inter-site kinetic coupling. Across ten independent parallel runs, the mean BTX yield was 63.9 wt% of the initial dry polymer feed (RSD 1.0%), while the mean dechlorination efficiency was 98.8% (RSD 0.2%), retained 96.3% Zn after five cycles, and maintained high dechlorination efficiency for model and real feeds. These results establish a hierarchical dual-site zeolite platform for chlorine-tolerant aromatics-oriented upcycling of PVC/PET mixed plastics. A facile process to fabricate electroless plating on PET sheet: Effects of surface roughness on adhesive force, electronic and structural properties of copper coating

Junjun Huang,Yu Zhang,Manman Yuan,Rui Chen,Bin Cheng,Liwei Zhang,Kaiming Wu,Minghua Li,Youhao Liu,Zhenming Chen

In this work, a facile method combined with catalyst solution (mixture of AgNO 3 , 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, alcohol, SiO 2 particle and deionized water) printing and electroless deposition to fabricate selective copper coating is demonstrated. The catalyst solution can write onto (polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) surface directly with good stability and resolution. The structure can catalyze plating reaction. SiO 2 particle can enhance surface roughness ( S r ) of catalyst coating. Effects of S r on electronic, adhesive force and structural properties of copper coating are investigated. High S r can facilitate the enhancement of Ag-adsorbed amount, deposition rate, adhesive force, crystallinity and electrical stability of plated coating. When the S r is 0.78 µm, the thickness of copper coating is 2.5 µm, minimum width of copper line is 250 µm, the resistivity is 2.1 × 10 −6  Ω cm, adhesion of 2.5 µm thick coating is 5B.

Fabrication of highly electrically conductive Ti/Ag/Ti tri-layer and Ti–Ag alloy thin films on PET fabrics by multi-target magnetron sputtering

Liu Chuanmei,Xu Jiangtao,Liu Zhengqin,Ning Xin,Jiang Shouxiang,Miao Dagang

In this study Ti/Ag/Ti tri-layer and Ti–Ag alloy films were deposited on the surfaces of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics by multi-target magnetron sputtering system to fabricate highly electro-conductive textiles. Before sputtering, the fabric was treated by polyacrylic acid ester (PA) to form a continuous surface on the surface of PET fabric by padding method. The as-fabricated fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. And the physical properties of the coated fabrics were evaluated by electrical conductivity, contact angle (CA), flexibility and adhesion. At last, a simple electric circuit was made with the as-treated fabric to evaluate the electrical property and explore its application further. The results of the study revealed that pretreatment with PA could form a continuous film on the surface of PET fabric. The PA-coated PET fabric with Ti/Ag/Ti fabric exhibited excellent electrical property whose electrical resistivity was only 5.1 × 10 −7  Ω m, CA of 137°. The PA-coated PET fabric with Ti–Ag alloy film exhibited a rather lower electrical resistivity of 3.4 × 10 −7  Ω m, CA of about 130°. Moreover, the samples retain ideal flexibility and adhesion. Therefore this study can broaden the application area of magnetron sputtering on discontinuous surface to fabricate electrical conductive fabric. And due to the excellent electro-conductivity, this kind of fabric will be a promising material for smart textiles.

Synergistically piezocatalytic and Fenton-like activation of H2O2 by a ferroelectric Bi12(Bi0.5Fe0.5)O19.5 catalyst to boost degradation of polyethylene terephthalate microplastic (PET-MPs)

Meixuan Wu,Renshu Wang,Lin Miao,Pengfei Sun,Baocheng Zhou,Yubing Xiong,Xiaoping Dong

Pollution of microplastics (MPs) has been drastically threating human health, however, whose elimination from the environment by current approaches is inefficient due to their high molecular weight, strong   hydrophobicity and stable covalent bonds. Herein, we report a novel and highly-efficient route to degrade MPs contaminants through synergistically piezocatalytic and Fenton-like activation of H 2 O 2 by a ferroelectric Bi 12 (Bi 0.5 Fe 0.5 )O 19.5 catalyst under ultrasound treatment. For 10 g/L polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs), the synergistic strategy reached a 28.9 % removal rate in 72 h, which is greatly enhanced in comparison to the individual piezocatalysis and Fenton (Fenton-like) activation. By optimizing the types of oxidants (H 2 O 2 , peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate) and bismuth ferrite catalysts (non-piezoelectric Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 and piezoelectric BiFeO 3 /Bi 12 (Bi 0.5 Fe 0.5 )O 19.5 ), it was revealed that H 2 O 2 is the best oxidant, and the piezoelectric Bi 12 (Bi 0.5 Fe 0.5 )O 19.5 with a high aspect-ratio morphology showed higher activity than the Bi 2 Fe 4 O 9 and BiFeO 3 . The catalyst dosage and H 2 O 2 concentration were further optimized, and the good durability of the catalyst was also demonstrated through multiple uses. Different characterization technologies demonstrated the occurrence of PET-MPs oxidation and fragmentation during the treatment process. The plausible mechanism of synergistically piezocatalytic and Fenton-like H 2 O 2 activation was proposed based on measurements of band structure, piezoelectric property and reactive oxygen species generation. Finally, we detected the intermediates and determined a possible degradation route of PET-MPs. The toxicity assessment indicated that the produced intermediates have low toxicity and potential risks to the environment.

18F-labeled ultrasmall nanoparticle probe for long-term PET tracking and real-time quantitative analysis of transplanted T lymphocytes in situ based on bioorthogonal reaction

Yang Chen,Wangxi Hai,Xiao Bao,Chuyi Liu,Yang Yang,Yuetan Chen,Kang Sun,Yunxuan Zhang,Ningshuang Ye,Sanyuan Shi,Samuel Kesse,Biao Li,Yuhong Xu,Jinliang Peng

The real-time, accurate understanding of the biodistribution of transplanted therapeutic cells is critical for their development and application. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has the potential to realize the noninvasive and quantitative evaluation of the spatial-temporal distribution of transplanted cells due to its unlimited tissue-penetration depth and quantitative capabilities, but its utility is limited by various shortcomings of existing imaging strategies or probes, such as the short half-life of the commonly used radioisotope fluorine-18 ( 18 F) and the interference of high nonspecific background signals to the exact localization and quantification of target cells. Here, we describe a new strategy for the long-term PET tracking and real-time quantitative analysis of transplanted cells based on a tetrazine-bearing, 18 F-labeled ultrasmall rare-earth nanoparticle probe (Tz-[ 18 F]NaGdF 4 ) capable of labeling trans-cyclooctene (TCO) pretagged T lymphocytes via a bioorthogonal reaction at any point after their transplantation. The ultrasmall Tz-[ 18 F]NaGdF 4 is readily prepared and characterized by rapid renal clearance and low nonspecific accumulation in major organs. The specific reaction between the Tz-[ 18 F]NaGdF 4 probe and pretagged cells under physiological conditions enabled the specific PET imaging of target cells with low background in situ , and the measured PET image-derived standardized uptake value linearly and positively correlated with the number of pretagged T lymphocytes retained in tissues, ensuring their accurate quantification based on real-time PET signals. Therefore, the bioorthogonal reaction-based Tz-[ 18 F]NaGdF 4 -PET represents a useful tool for the long-term tracking and real-time quantification of transplanted cells in vivo .

Post-column derivatization high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) method for the detection of Kryptofix 2.2.2 content in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) tracers

Lei Xu,Zhenhao Dong,Hong Zhang,Antonio Arleques Gomes,Wagner de Rossi,Jing Wang,Arian Pérez Nario,Qinggang He

A post-column derivatization high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) method was developed to determine Kryptofix 2.2.2 (K2.2.2) in PET tracers. This method utilizes the specific complexation between K2.2.2 and Pb 2+ , forming a stable 1:1 host-guest complex. The complexation produces a bathochromic shift in UV absorption maximum (from 210 nm to 254 nm), enabling sensitive detection. This approach addresses the limitations of poor performance and narrow applicability associated with direct single-method detection of K2.2.2. The chromatographic conditions were optimized (column flow rate: 0.7 mL·min −1 ; derivatization reagent flow rate: 0.7 mL·min −1 ; Pb 2+ concentration: 50 μg·mL −1 ) and the method was validated. The results exhibited excellent linearity (1–100 μg·mL −1 , r 2  > 0.999), high reproducibility (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 5%), and a low detection limit (0.5 μg·mL −1 ). The method successfully quantified K2.2.2 in [ 18 F]FDG, [ 18 F]AV45 and [ 18 F]DPA714, achieving spiked recoveries of 89%–105%. Additionally, the method remained unaffected by interference from common sample components such as sodium chloride and sodium ascorbate. This method provides a novel and efficient quality control tool for the simultaneous analysis of radiochemical purity and K2.2.2 content in diverse PET tracers.

Fabrication of a foldable transparent conductive electrode with suppressed silver migration based on the anchoring of fluorinated alkyl passivated silver nanowire on the PET surface

Kun Li,Kun Liu,Dingxuan Wang,Dongyu Lvyu,Jue Cheng,Junying Zhang,Haobo Zhang,Feng Gao

The tethering of silver nanowires (AgNWs) on the optical polymeric membrane is regarded as one of the most applicable strategies constructing flexible transparent conductive electrodes (FTCEs) meeting the growing demand from flexible electronics. However, it remains a challenge to establish reliable connections between AgNWs and polymeric surface enhancing the foldable stability of FTCEs without alternating the transparency. Herein, a bifunctional interfacial engineering strategy was proposed, synergizing covalent anchoring and passivation shielding to concurrently achieve folding stability, silver migration suppression, environmental stability, and retained optical transparency. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) surface was decorated via carbene, which was able to insert to C-H bonds instantaneously with the chain propagation hardly observed, forming the quasi-monolayer of thiol groups covalently connected with the most top layer of the PET substrate, without altering the transparency. The adhesion strength between AgNWs and PET surface was greatly enhanced by the Ag-S bonds, where the AgNWs surface frame and the sheet resistance showed no significant change after 100 seconds ultrasonic treatment in DI water and 1000 times folded, respectively. The surface decoration endowed the prepared FTCEs with high visible light transparency (85%), low sheet resistance (11.5 Ω/sq) and high infrared reflectivity (65%) simultaneously. Fluorinated alkyl chains were covalently decorated on the prepared FTCEs, forming the Ag-S bonds and protecting the electrode from the invasion of moisture, which effectively suppressed Ag migration. The presenting surface modification strategy provides a robust solution for constructing long-term stable AgNWs based FTCEs.

Aptamer-mediated charge neutralization and aggregation of gold nanorods for fast visual monitoring of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in foods and its release from PET containers

Yumei He,Lijun Feng,Junrong Deng,Shuang Chen,Xinfeng Zhang

A new strategy of aptamer-induced charge neutralization and aggregation of AuNRs was developed for facile DEHP detection. • The strategy achieves a LOD (4.2 nM), much below the drinking water limit set by EPA. • The platform was applicable for monitoring of DEHP in food and its release from containers. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an emerging endocrine-disrupting contaminant, and its rapid monitoring in food is critically important. We developed an aptamer-induced charge neutralization and aggregation of gold nanorods (AuNRs) strategy for facile detection of DEHP. The negatively charged aptamers were adsorbed onto positively charged AuNRs, causing aggregation of AuNRs with color shift from wine-red to blue-gray. In the presence of DEHP, the aptamer binds to DEHP, suppressing aggregation and maintaining the dispersed state. This strategy achieved a detection limit of 4.2 nM, well below the drinking water limit set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The system was successfully applied for detection of DEHP in ten food samples and monitoring the DEHP release from PET containers. No DEHP was detected for hot water in disposable cups, bowls, etc., but PET bottles released over limit DEHP after cycles of reheating. This platform is promising for rapid monitoring of DEHP in food and its release from containers.

Amino polysaccharide quaternary ammonium salt grafted to PET-Cuff by ultraviolet irradiation for improving the sustained antibacterial property of semi-permanent central vein tunneled cuffed catheter

Jianyong Liu,Hongxia Li,Chenhao Shi,Yi Liu,Changcan Shi,Xuedong Sun,Xujian Li,Xumin Chen

In hemodialysis, tunneled cuffed catheter (TCC) is commonly used as a medical device for establishing vascular access. To address the current problem that the skin tunnel of TCC is susceptible to bacterial infection, this work proposes quaternized modification of the cuff of TCC to comprehensively enhance the long-lasting antimicrobial performance of TCC. The morphology of the cuff basically resembles the polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Via ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, acrylic acid (AA) was grafted onto PET. Then, amino polysaccharide quaternary ammonium salt (As) replaced H + of the carboxyl groups on the macromolecular chain of PET through solution post-treatment method. Through the single factor experiment, the degree of grafting reached 159.8% under the optimum preparation conditions (AA concentration of 25 vol%, H + concentration of 0.2 mol/L, photosensitizer capacity of 15 wt%, and photo-irradiation time of 30 min). By the above method, we successfully synthesized a highly hydrophilic, well biocompatible, and highly efficient antimicrobial PET-g-PAA@As. Animal experiments and histological analyses showed that PET-g-PAA@As was superior to PET control and blank control groups in controlling infection and promoting wound healing. This catheter material with excellent biocompatibility, sustained antimicrobial activity, and wound healing ability will have great potential for use in hemodialysis.
