Preparation and corrosion inhibition performance of controlled-release ethyl cellulose@D-sodium gluconate microcapsules in simulated concrete pore solution

Wen Yang,Yunbo Tong,Yong Yang,Qianping Ran,Lei Dong

The application of corrosion inhibitors is a widely adopted strategy for protecting reinforcing steel against electrochemical degradation. However, conventional direct-addition approaches often lead to premature inhibitor depletion and lack controlled-release functionality. In this study, a novel sustained-release capsule-type inhibitor was developed to combat chloride-induced steel corrosion. Ethyl cellulose with high alkali resistance, controllable release and good mechanical properties was used as the shell material and D -sodium gluconate as the core, using a phase separation method and the preparation of the capsule was verified by TG, FT-IR and SEM. The experiment showed that the resulting capsules displayed a "pea-pod" shape (about 0.5–1.0 μm in length and 0.2 μm in diameter) with a compact core/shell structure and when the core/shell ratio was 1:5, the maximum encapsulation efficiency of the capsules was 73.3 %. When dispersed in simulated concrete pore solution, the capsules enabled sustained release of D -sodium gluconate over multiple days. EIS and LPR were used for electrochemical test. And the electrochemical analysis confirmed that the capsule-based inhibitor effectively suppressed corrosion and improved corrosion resistance. Specifically, a dosage of 0.05 % resulted in an inhibition efficiency of 90.7 ± 1.2 % after 7 days. The core-to-shell ratio was identified as a critical factor governing both the release kinetics and the overall protective performance, with the 1:5 formulation demonstrating optimal corrosion inhibition. This study offers a promising strategy for the design and application of intelligent corrosion inhibitors in reinforced concrete structures.

Nanosheet-assembled hierarchical nanostructures of hydroxyapatite: surfactant-free microwave-hydrothermal rapid synthesis, protein/DNA adsorption and pH-controlled release

Xin-Yu Zhao,Ying-Jie Zhu,Feng Chen,Bing-Qiang Lu,Jin Wu

In this paper, a surfactant-free rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanosheet-assembled flower-like hierarchical nanostructures (NFHNs) is reported. The effects of the experimental conditions on the morphology and crystal phase of the product are investigated. A possible formation mechanism of hydroxyapatite NFHNs is proposed. The morphology of the product can vary from flower-like to polyhedra by adjusting the microwave heating temperature. The protein and DNA adsorption properties of the as-prepared hydroxyapatite NFHNs are studied. The loading capacities of the as-prepared hydroxyapatite NFHNs for bovine serum albumin (BSA), hemoglobin (Hb) and fish sperm DNA are determined to be 165, 164 and 112 mg g−1, respectively. The protein release process is conducted at different pH values (pH 7.2, 5.5 and 4.8) in phosphate buffer saline (PBS), and the pH-controlled protein release behavior has been found. Thus, the as-prepared hydroxyapatite NFHNs are promising for protein drug delivery applications.

Fabrication of core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp nanoparticles with the ability for controlled release of Ag+ and superior hemocompatibility

Keling Chen,Kenan Xie,Qin Long,Lijun Deng,Zhiqiang Fu,Huanhuan Xiao,Lu Xie

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are a type of crucial bactericide due to their excellent antibacterial properties. However, the application of Ag-NPs in clinics and in bone tissue engineering is hampered because of their unabiding antibacterial efficacy and undesirable biological properties such as cytotoxicity and inferior hemocompatibility. In this study, Ag-NPs were modified with polydopamine (pDA) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) to prepare novel and multifunctional core (Ag-NPs)–shell (pDA)–shell (HAp) nanoparticles (Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs). The Ag+ release rate was reduced by about 80% on the first day, and then Ag+ was slowly released, which implied that the core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs could effectively control the release of Ag+. The core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs could obviously inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus, and the bactericide rate of the Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs was up to 99.99% after being cultured for 24 h. Furthermore, the synthesized Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs exhibited superior hemocompatibility due to the favorable blood compatibility of the pDA coating and HAp shell as well as the controlled release of Ag+. Thus, the core–shell Ag@pDA@HAp-NPs, with the ability for the controlled release of Ag+ and superior hemocompatibility, are promising for reducing cytotoxicity and achieving long-term antibacterial properties, and could have potential applications in clinics and in bone tissue engineering.

Preparation of a pH-responsive controlled-release electrochemical immunosensor based on polydopamine encapsulation for ultrasensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein

Jiang Mingzhe,Wang Min,Lai Wenjing,Zhang Mengmeng,Ma Chaoyun,Li Pengli,Li Jiajia,Li Hongling,Hong Chenglin

To accomplish ultra-sensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP), a novel electrochemical immunosensor using polydopamine-coated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (PDA@Fe 3 O 4 NPs) as a smart label and polyaniline (PANI) and Au NPs as substrate materials has been created. The sensor has the following advantages over typical immunoassay technology: (1) The pH reaction causes PDA@Fe 3 O 4 NPs to release Prussian blue (PB) prosoma while also destroying the secondary antibody label and immunological platform and lowering electrode impedance; (2) PB has a highly efficient catalytic effect on H 2 O 2 , allowing for the obvious amplification of electrical impulses; (3) PANI was electrodeposited on the electrode surface to avoid PB loss and signal leakage, which effectively absorbed and fixed PB while considerably increasing electron transmission efficiency. The sensor’s detection limit was 0.254 pg·mL −1 ( S/N  = 3), with a detection range of 1 pg·mL −1 to 100 ng·mL −1 . The sensor has a high level of selectivity, repeatability, and stability, and it is predicted to be utilized to detect AFP in real-world samples. Graphical abstract

Research on a kind of biocompatible molecularly imprinted materials with silybin controlled release based on pH/temperature dual responses

Ni Tan,Kang Ji,Dianxiong He,Sen Liao,Leqing He,Jingwen Han,Can Chen,Yaqing Liu

Silybin , a hepatoprotective active natural ingredient, was used as the template , methyl acrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer , n-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAm) as the thermal response monomer , magnetic core Fe 3 O 4 @CS@APTES@BiBB coated by biocompatible chitosan as the carrier, and a kind of silybin molecularly imprinted materials (MMIPs) based on pH/temperature dual responses were prepared by electron transfer activation regenerative catalyst atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP). The synthesized material was characterized by FT-IR, TGA , SEM, XRD , VSM, and XPS , and the loading behavior of silybin in MMIPs could be explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model . The selectivity factor α (2.636) and the relative selectivity factor β (2.468) indicated MMIPs had good specific recognition ability for silybin. In addition, a series of experimental data displayed MMIPs had many other excellent characteristics such as adsorption property, swelling performance, biocompatibility , degradability , stability, reproducibility and so on. The cumulative release rates of MMIPs could reach 29%, 23% and 25% in the media of pH 1.0, 7.4 and 8.2 at 37.5 °C, resepectively, and when the temperature was raised to 43 °C, the release rate of MMIPs in solution (pH 7.4) reached 49%, which indicated that the carrier material had good pH/temperature dual responses.

Preparation of cinnamaldehyde-loaded polyhydroxyalkanoate/chitosan porous microspheres with adjustable controlled-release property and its application in fruit preservation

Shenyu Yang,Qiuju Miao,Yiping Huang,Peishan Jian,Xiaoping Wang,Mei Tu

Cinnamaldehyde (Ci) is a highly effective natural broad-spectrum antibacterial agent and preservative, but its strong volatility and short duration have a negative impact on its application in the field of agriculture and food. In order to improve these properties, porous PHA/CS microspheres were prepared by using polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and chitosan (CS) as basic materials based on Poiseuille flow principle, and PHA/CS scaffolds were obtained by sintering the microspheres at low temperature. The effect of the ratio of PHA and CS on the particle size and charge of microspheres was studied. It was found that the particle size increased with the increase of the ratio of PHA and CS, while the surface charge changed from negative to positive. The SEM results showed that the microspheres exhibit a porous structure, and the CS adsorb on the surface of microspheres resulted in the reduction of surface pores. FTIR spectrum confirmed that there was only physical interaction between PHA and CS. PHA-based microspheres exhibited high encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity for Ci. Ci-loaded PHA-based microspheres and scaffolds had different release rates, and the release time can be adjusted in the range of 7–60 days. Antimicrobial activity and fruit preservation ability of the loaded Ci microspheres showed that it can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and extend the shelf life of the strawberry. This novel Ci carrier with good biocompatibility, biodegradability and adjustable release rate would have a broad application in the field of food preservation and antibacterial.

pH-responsive nano-controlled-release agents loaded with thiabendazole in MIL-101(Fe): preparation, characterization, and smart release behavior

Liu Sinan,Wang Li,Lü Fulin,Yang Shuzhen

Fusarium graminearum is a pathogenic fungus responsible for significant plant diseases. To combat infections caused by this pathogen, we designed a pH-responsive nano-pesticide thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe). Through systematic optimization of the loading parameters, the optimal preparation conditions were determined as follows: the thiabendazole solution concentration was 3 mg/mL, the amount of carrier used was 0.0400 g, and the loading time was 6 h. Structural characterization revealed that MIL-101(Fe) possesses a uniform octahedral structure with a smooth surface. Thiabendazole was successfully loaded into its pores without damaging the crystal structure of MIL-101(Fe). Regarding release behavior, thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) exhibited significant pH-responsive characteristics. After 238 h, the cumulative release rate of thiabendazole reached 74.08% at pH = 5.0, while the cumulative release rates at pH = 7.0 and 9.0 were 62.17% and 57.22%, respectively. The release kinetics study showed that the release process of thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) followed a first-order model. Furthermore, Ritger-Peppas model fitting suggested that the release mechanism is consistent with Fickian diffusion across pH = 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0. The prepared thiabendazole@MIL-101(Fe) displayed antibacterial activity comparable to that of conventional SC Thi and exhibited no adverse effects on wheat seed germination or seedling growth. This study provides new ideas and methods for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly nano-pesticides.

Baicalin-Ternary LDH-Modified Magnesium Alloy with Anti-Corrosion and pH-Responsive Controlled Release, Near-Infrared-Enhanced Catalytic Property

Yuhan Liang,Lijie Chen,Mingyue Feng,Tong Zhang,Rongbang Sun,Yang Liu,Yifu Fu,Yunxiang Chen,Lan Chen

HighlightsWhat are the main findings? The Mg-Mn-Fe LDH grown in situ on the PEO coating-modified Mg alloy effectively blocks pores and introduces metal catalytic active sites.Baicalin achieves stable immobilization by forming coordination bonds with the metal ions in LDH through the oxygen-containing functional groups. The LDH/BA composite coating significantly improved corrosion resistance, along with pH-responsive drug release and near-infrared-enhanced enzyme-like catalytic performance. What are the implications of the main findings?A multi-functional modification strategy integrating “corrosion resistance, drug loading and control release” was established, which provides a novel technical solution for the long-term corrosion protection of magnesium alloys. The revealed interfacial coordination immobilization mechanism can provide theoretical references for the structural design of organic–inorganic composite protective coatings. The synergy of corrosion resistance and microenvironment stimulus-responsive functions is realized, which expands the application of LDH coatings in the modification of metal implants.Aiming at the rapid corrosion of degradable magnesium alloys in physiological environments and the insufficient long-term protection of single plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings, Mg-Mn-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) and baicalin (BA)-loaded LDH/BA composite coatings were prepared in situ on PEO-pretreated ZE21C magnesium alloy substrates. BA was stably anchored on the LDH surface via coordination bonds between its oxygen-containing functional groups and laminate metal sites. Benefiting from the physical barrier of the LDH lamellar structure and the corrosion inhibition effect of baicalin, the LDH/BA coating significantly improved the corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy matrix. The composite coating exhibited peroxidase-like catalytic activity for reactive oxygen species generation, which could be enhanced by near-infrared irradiation. It also possessed stable photothermal conversion performance and pH-responsive drug release behavior under acidic conditions. Biological characterization demonstrated that BA-loaded LDH composite coatings exert potent inhibitory effects on 143B cell proliferation. This work integrates long-term corrosion resistance, controlled drug release, and photoresponsive catalytic functions onto magnesium alloy surfaces, providing an effective strategy for developing high-performance biodegradable magnesium alloys.

Injectable platelet-rich plasma-based hydrogels: a controlled release platform for growth factors and cardiac regeneration post-myocardial infarction

Shi Yaqiang,Liu Yaqin,Bai Xiaoyu,Gao Wentao,Ma Yawei,Wang Jieneng,Hu Yuan,Jiang Yongjie,Li Wei,Zhou Shifeng,Qi Quan

Myocardial Infarction (MI) is a leading cause of high global cardiovascular mortality and disability. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), as a widely available autologous biological product rich in various growth factors, holds significant potential for promoting tissue healing and regeneration. However, its clinical application is limited by short in vivo retention time and transient therapeutic effects, necessitating the development of novel drug delivery systems to enhance its clinical value. In this study, a novel injectable PRP-gel composite was developed. Based on the Schiff base reaction, the composite gel exhibits excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, appropriate mechanical properties, and enables controlled release of multiple growth factors from PRP. Results at 28 days post-intramyocardial injection demonstrated that, compared with the control group, the PRP-gel composite effectively promoted angiogenesis, inhibited cardiac cell apoptosis and injury, significantly reduced infarct size, decreased myocardial fibrosis, and preserved ventricular wall thickness, ultimately leading to a marked improvement in cardiac function. In summary, the composite gel developed in this study provides an optimized strategy for the clinical application of PRP and represents a promising therapeutic approach for myocardial regeneration following MI.

Synergistically enhanced aspirin loading and pH-triggered controlled release via a ZIF-L/ZIF-8 hierarchical coating on titanium

Shanchun Zhang,Xiangyu Cheng,Jingtong Wu,Yunuo Song,Liping Ren

To address the challenge of preventing peri-implantitis, the present study developed a pH-responsive drug delivery coating on titanium (Ti) implants for controlled aspirin release. A hierarchical metal-organic framework coating was constructed on alkali- and heat-treated titanium by sequentially synthesizing Zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L) and ZIF-8 (denoted AHTL8). Material characterization confirmed the successful fabrication of a hierarchical micro–nano structure, which significantly enhanced surface hydrophilicity. The AHTL8 system exhibited a remarkably high aspirin-loading capacity (0.227 mg) and intelligent release kinetics, with sustained delivery (77.36% over 72 h) at physiological pH (7.4) and rapid, extensive release (97.39% over 72 h) under acidic conditions pH (6.5). Furthermore, the coating demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility, and the aspirin-loaded AHTL8 significantly promoted the proliferation of mouse osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. These findings indicate that the ZIF-L/ZIF-8 composite coating serves as a highly efficient pH-triggered platform with high drug-loading and responsive release capacity, and its excellent cytocompatibility and MC3T3-E1 proliferation-promoting effect provide a preliminary basis for its potential application in promoting osseointegration.

Manganese-Crosslinked Porous Carbon for Phosphorus Recovery and Soil Remediation: A Sustainable Strategy Featuring Fast Adsorption and Controlled Release

Wei Mao,Xuewu Shen,Changqing Xu,Huaxin Lei,Xiaona Zheng,Ruohan Li,Lixun Zhang,Nuanling Wen,Yuntao Guan

A new Mn/SA-C-S was introduced for P adsorption/release and soil remediation. • Mn/SA-C-S has an adsorption capacity of up to 46.9 mg P/g and only releases ∼10% of P within 500 min. • Mn/SA-C-S-P maintained a high available P content in the soil (∼109 mg/kg). • Soil microbial communities were significantly altered by Mn/SA-C-S-P. • The production of Mn/SA-C-S emitted 1.9–17.62 times less CO 2 than conventional carbon-based materials. Developing efficient systems to recover phosphorus (P) from water is critical for mitigating aquatic eutrophication and advancing sustainable P cycling. Herein, a porous carbon skeleton was synthesized via pyrolysis of manganese-crosslinked sodium alginate (Mn/SA-C-S) for efficient P adsorption and subsequent soil remediation. Mn/SA-C-S exhibited rapid P adsorption (14.61 mg/g within 200 min) and controlled release (∼10% desorption over 500 min) via precipitation and surface complexation. The P-rich Mn/SA-C-S (Mn/SA-C-S-P) sustains soil available P (∼109 mg/kg), enhances plant P uptake, and reduces P loss. Crucially, Mn/SA-C-S-P application significantly reshaped the soil microbial community, enriching key functional groups involved in nutrient cycling. Life cycle assessment revealed that Mn/SA-C-S production emits 9.19 kg CO 2 eq, which is 1.9 to 17.62 times lower than values reported in the literature for biochar-based materials. Producing one ton of Mn/SA-C-S-P yields a net benefit of $487.48. This study provides a proof of concept for recovering P from wastewater and reusing it as a resource toward sustainable P management. pH-responsive supramolecular vesicles composed of sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin and N-dodecyl chitosan for controlled release of naproxen sodium

Hui-Hong Luo,Wen-Rong Xu

pH-responsive supramolecular polymeric vesicles were successfully developed through the host–guest complexation of two biocompatible and water-soluble saccharides: sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SCD) and N -dodecyl chitosan (DCS). Extensive characterization using UV–vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the structural robustness of the vesicles, which exhibited effective self-assembly in acidic conditions and disassembly in alkaline environments. To evaluate the drug-loading capacity and pH-responsive release properties, naproxen sodium (NS), a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was encapsulated as a model compound. In vitro release studies simulating gastrointestinal pH conditions (2.0, 6.8, and 8.5) demonstrated minimal drug release of (28.34 ± 1.02)% at low pH and significantly enhanced release of (56.57 ± 1.68)% and (86.96 ± 1.29)% at neutral and slightly alkaline pH, respectively. The system exhibited an initial burst release followed by sustained release, aligning with the therapeutic requirements for rapid onset and prolonged action. These findings highlight the potential of SCD/DCS supramolecular vesicles as a versatile platform for targeted oral drug delivery, particularly for drugs requiring intestinal release. Highlights Supramolecular vesicles self-assembled via sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SCD) and N -dodecyl chitosan (DCS) host–guest complexation. Vesicles exhibited stability in acidic pH and disassembled in alkaline conditions. Naproxen sodium-loaded vesicles displayed pH-sensitive release properties. Drug release occurred in neutral to alkaline pH, ideal for intestinal delivery.
