Durable superhydrophobic and superoleophilic electrospun nanofibrous membrane for oil-water emulsion separation

Wenjing Ma,Juntao Zhao,Olayinka Oderinde,Jingquan Han,Zhongche Liu,Buhong Gao,Ranhua Xiong,Qilu Zhang,Shaohua Jiang,Chaobo Huang

Marine   pollution and   industrial wastewater have caused serious environmental pollution, thereby resulting into an alarming damage to public health in the past decades, hence the high demand for, cost effective, energy-efficient oil-water separation technologies for the removal of oil contaminants from such water. Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membrane by immersing a polyimide (PI)-based nanofibrous membrane into a water/ethanol/ammonia/dopamine mixture, followed by modification with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT). The PI-based membrane exhibited water contact angle (WCA) above 153°, while the oil contact angle (OCA) approached 0°, thereby promoting an outstanding chemical stability which sustained its superhydrophobicity when immersed in aqueous solutions at different pH values. Additionally, the PI-based membrane possesses ultrahigh flux, high separation efficiency and good reusability in oil-water separation. The aforementioned properties, as well as the easily scale-up preparation process ensure that this promising as-fabricated membrane can be applied for practical environmental applications including treatment of oily wastewater and oil spillage clean-up.

Facile Preparation of Robust Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic TiO2-Decorated Polyvinyl Alcohol Sponge for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Zhiwei He,Hanqing Wu,Zhen Shi,Zhe Kong,Shiyu Ma,Yuping Sun,Xianguo Liu

Oily wastewater and oil spills pose a threat to the environment and human health, and porous sponge materials are highly desired for oil/water separation. Herein, we design a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO2-decorated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge material for efficient oil/water separation. The TiO2–PVA sponge is obtained by firmly anchoring TiO2 nanoparticles onto the skeleton surface of pristine PVA sponge via the cross-linking reactions between TiO2 nanoparticles and H3BO3 and KH550, followed by the chemical modification of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane. The as-prepared TiO2–PVA sponge shows a high water contact angle of 157° (a sliding angle of 5.5°) and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, showing excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. The TiO2–PVA sponge exhibits excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of immersing it in the corrosive solutions and solvents, boiling it in water, and the sandpaper abrasion test. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO2–PVA sponge possesses excellent absorption capacity of oils or organic solvents ranging from 4.3 to 13.6 times its own weight. More importantly, the as-prepared TiO2–PVA sponge can separate carbon tetrachloride from the oil–water mixture with a separation efficiency of 97.8% with the aid of gravity and maintains a separation efficiency of 96.5% even after 15 cyclic oil/water separation processes. Therefore, the rationally designed superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO2–PVA sponge shows great potential in practical applications of dealing with oily wastewater and oil spills.

Oil/water separation with hydrophobic/oleophilic silica-shelled cellulose aerogels

Yue Sun,Chengxi Deng,Hua Dong

In this work, hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose/SiO 2 aerogels are prepared by coating cellulose aerogels which are prepared from freeze-drying aqueous cellulose solutions with a layer of silica shell and then hydrophobizing the surface by reacting with vaporized methyltrimethoxylsilane. With the cellulose content in the aqueous solution increases from 0.5% to 1.25%, the density of the cellulose/SiO 2 aerogel increases from 28.92 mg/cm 3 to 34.83 mg/cm 3 , and the porosity decreases from 90.2% to 84.48%. The structure and composition of cellulose/SiO 2 aerogel are analyzed with SEM, FT-IR, XPS , and TGA . The surface wettability investigation indicates that the prepared cellulose/SiO 2 aerogels have excellent hydrophobicity and oleophilicity, with a water contact angle up to 143° and an oil contact angle down to 0°. The results of oil absorption experiments show that the absorption capacity of the aerogels for oils and organic solvents is 16∼40 times their own mass. In addition, as the aerogels are hydrophobic/oleophilic, they demonstrate good oil-selective absorption performance in oil/water mixture. Moreover, experimental results in oil absorption under high temperature conditions and acidic/basic conditions indicate that the aerogels have exceptional resilience towards arduous conditions. These advantages render them a viable option for remediation of water pollution resulted from oil contamination.

Superhydrophobic/superlipophilic interface layer for oil-water separation

Fei Xiao,Hongxia Zhang,Tianzhao Wu,Jiahao Liu,Jianxin Liu,Jiangbo Zhang,Wei Liu,Taixin Liang,Jinghui Hu

Low-cost, stable materials that can be used for oil-water separation have significant industrial applications. A simple two-step immersion approach was used to successfully create a melamine sponge with superhydrophobic/superlipophilic characteristics. The polyphenolamine@ 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane sponge (PPA@PF sponge) produced in this study possesses exceptional superhydrophobic and superlipophilic properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to examine the surface morphology and chemical content of the PPA@PF sponge. The prepared PPA@PF sponge has a static contact angle (SCA) of 156°. More notably, PPA@PF sponge has extremely stable and anti-corrosion properties. After being corroded by acidic solutions, alkaline solutions, and organic solvents , the PPA@PF sponge retains good hydrophobic characteristics on its surface. Finally, the PPA@PF sponge is successfully applied to the rapid oil-water separation.

One-Step Transformation of Metal Meshes to Robust Superhydrophobic and Superoleophilic Meshes for Highly Efficient Oil Spill Cleanup and Oil/Water Separation

Chao Fu,Lin Gu,Zhixiang Zeng,Qunji Xue

Phytic acid (PA), which is a natural and innoxious plant constituent, can strongly adsorb on the metal surface because of its six phosphate groups. In this work, based on the chelating properties of PA and the reaction between PA and hydrolyzable vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES), we developed a novel and facial strategy to generate hierarchical-layer nanospheres on the metal mesh surface and fabricated robust superhydrophobic and superoleophilic miniature metal mesh ships. Because of their superwetting properties, the modified meshes could easily remove and recycle the oil spills from the water surface (>90% collection efficiency), and have high oil/water separation capacity (>96%). The excellent stability, corrosion resistance, and robust mechanical durability endow the modified mesh ships with more advantages in a marine environment. We envision that these superhydrophobic meshes modified with PA and VTES are sustainable, environmentally friendly, and easy to scale up and hence display great potential in practical application.

Bioinspired superhydrophobic and superlipophilic nanofiber membrane with pine needle-like structure for efficient gravity-driven oil/water separation

Ying Su,Tingting Fan,Haoyan Bai,Hengshu Guan,Xin Ning,Miao Yu,Yunze Long

The challenge of effectively separating oily wastewater discharge in the industry has inspired researchers to explore advanced oil/water separation materials. In this work, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofiber (PNF) membranes were prepared by solution blow spinning, which is a novel type of spinning technology with advantages of high fiber yield, high safety and low energy consumption. Then, pine needle-like titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanorods (TNs) were grown on PNF by hydrothermal method. This pine needle-like hierarchical micro-nano structure greatly increased the roughness of the membrane surface. Then, further fluorination treatment made the prepared PNF@TNs-1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDS) membrane exhibited superhydrophobicity and superlipophilicity which water contact angle was 155.0° and oil contact angle was 0°. The PNF@TNs-PFDS membrane could effectively separate a variety of oil/water mixtures (such as dichloromethane, n-hexane, kerosene and toluene) by gravity. The separation efficiency (toluene/water) of the membrane reached up to 99.99% and the oil (dichloromethane)/water separation flux reached up to 9845 L m −2 h −1 . Moreover, the membrane exhibited excellent self-cleaning performance and cycle performance. The toner on the membrane could be washed away with water flow and the membrane still maintained high separation efficiency after being recycled for 10 times. In addition, the PNF@TNs-PFDS membrane could also degrade organic pollutants when treating industrial oily wastewater, indicating its potential application in water purification treatment.

Facile synthesis of a two-tier hierarchical structured superhydrophobic-superoleophilic melamine sponge for rapid and efficient oil/water separation

Jiucun Chen,Hui You,Liqun Xu,Tianhao Li,Xianquan Jiang,Chang Ming Li

Oil leakages often cause fatal disasters for environmental pollution but an efficient treatment of the oil spills is still very challenging. Sponge-substrates with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity have been attracted much attention for oil/water separation. In this study, an inexpensive commercial melamine sponge was chemically modified for the uses of oil spills treatment by oil/water separation. Inspiring from the superhydrophobic property of lotus leaf, pyrrole was polymerized by a simple vapor-phase deposition to encapsulate the raw melamine-formaldehyde (MF) sponge. The as-formed thin polypyrrole walls were utilized as reducing reagent to generate Ag nanoparticles on the capsuled sponge. Accordingly, a superhydrophobic melamine sponge with a two-tier hierarchical structure was achieved after fluorination , and this material was applied to absorb oil from water. The absorption capacity, absorption rate and recyclability were investigated. This superhydrophobic sponge exhibited an efficient and fast oil/water separation performance in complicated environment and could be applied in industrial production because of its low cost and simple fabrication procedure. This study presents a facile strategy for the fabrication of efficient oil sorbents based on a two-tier hierarchical structure, providing a novel means for the upgrading of engineered sorption materials.

Preparation of a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic corn straw fiber used as an oil absorbent for selective absorption of oil from water

Xu Yang,Yang Haiyue,Zang Deli,Zhou Yan,Liu Feng,Huang Xiaochen,Chang Jo-Shu,Wang Chengyu,Ho Shih-Hsin

Background Oil leakages frequently occur during oil product development and oil transportation. These incidents are a vital factor in water contamination, thus leading to serious environmental destruction. Therefore, superhydrophobic/superoleophilic material is one of the solutions to treat oily wastewater. Results This study aimed to develop a simple, fast and low-cost method to treat oily wastewater by synthesizing a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic corn straw fiber via conventional impregnation. The corresponding results illustrate that abundant homogeneous silica (SiO 2 ) granules evenly accreted on the surface of the prepared fiber were conducive to high surface roughness. Meanwhile, (Heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl) trimethoxysilane, a sort of silane coupling agent, could greatly reduce surface free energy by grafting with SiO 2 particles on the corn straw fiber surface. The obtained superhydrophobic/superoleophilic corn straw fiber exhibited a water contact angle of 152° and an oil contact angle of 0° for various oils, strongly demonstrating its considerable application as an oil absorbent that can be applied for oil cleanup. In addition, the prepared fiber displayed a great chemical stability and environmental durability. Conclusions Due to its high absorption capacity and absorption efficiency, the prepared fiber has great potential as a new oil absorbent for treatment of oily water.

Robust superhydrophobic and superoleophilic filter paper via atom transfer radical polymerization for oil/water separation

Hui Wu,Longhui Wu,Shengchang Lu,Xinxing Lin,He Xiao,Xinhua Ouyang,Shilin Cao,Lihui Chen,Liulian Huang

Robust superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cellulose- g -PFOEMA filter paper membranes were fabricated via surface grafting of poly(perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate) (PFOEMA) using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The surface chemical compositions, morphologies and wettability of cellulose- g -PFOEMA with different degree of graft ratio (DG) were investigated using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and contact angle (CA) measurement. IR and XPS showed that PFOEMA were introduced into surface of filter paper. The superhydrophobicity of filter paper increased with amount of PFOEMA grafted. When DG of grafted PFOEMA was higher than 11.2%, the superhydrophobicity reached a steady state and the measured water contact angle was about 157°. The PFOEMA-grafted filter paper exhibited excellent chemical resistance toward a wide range of pH solution from 1 to 12. Cellulose- g -PFOEMA is convenient for oil/water separation with efficiency higher than 95%. The excellent reusability and stability make cellulose- g -PFOEMA filter paper membrane a promising candidate in the applications of oil spillage cleanup and the separation of oil/water mixture.

Facilitate the preparation of naturally modified and self-healing superhydrophobic/superoleophilic biochar-based foams for efficient oil-water separation

Kai Hu,Honghong Lyu,Haonan Duan,Zhenzhong Hu,Boxiong Shen

Oil spills are sudden, complex, and long-term hazardous, and the existing adsorption materials still have the disadvantages of small selective adsorption capacity, easy secondary contamination, and difficult to repair after breakage in practical applications. Herein, melamine foam (MF) coated by ball milled biochar (BMBC) and natural beeswax (Wax@BMBC@MF) was prepared by a bio-inspired functionalization method and further added with self-healing function (SH-Wax@BMBC@MF) to cope with complex environments, and applied to oil-water separation for oil adsorption. SEM and FTIR results showed that BMBC and natural beeswax nanoparticles successfully encapsulated the smooth surface of the melamine foam skeleton. The loading of natural beeswax increased the foam's ability to absorb oil and organic solvents from 0.6108–1.134 g to 0.850–1.391 g, and the oil-absorbing capacity of the foam remained at 0. 758–1.263 g after being cut by a knife and self-healing. The oil-absorbing capacity of SH-Wax@BMBC@MF remained in the range of 0.936–1.336 g under acid/alkali environment (pH =1–13). The surface functional groups of BMBC improved the surface roughness of the material and strengthen the MF skeleton to adsorb oils and organic solvents by capillary action. The generation of the di-coordinated structure by Fe 3+ and catechol group contributed the restoration of SH-Wax@BMBC@MF structure and oil absorption capacity. SH-Wax@BMBC@MF has superiority of superhydrophobic, superoleophilic, self-healing after damage, and environmental friendliness, which provides a promising solution for the treatment of oil spills at sea.

Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic graphene aerogel for ultrafast removal of hazardous organics from water

Xin Wang,Shibin Nie,Ping Zhang,Lei Song,Yuan Hu

A facile approach to preparing functionalized graphene aerogels (FGAs) with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties was developed by modifying graphene aerogels with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The as-prepared FGAs displayed mesoporous structure with a high aspect surface area (157   m 2 /g), which afforded a high adsorption capacity toward various organic solvents with a remarkable value of 48–96   g/g. In addition, the resultant FGAs also exhibited a high separation efficiency (≥99%), ultrafast removal (a few seconds), and good recycling performance (10 cycles, 99% retention) toward multiple hazardous organics (chloroform, dichloromethane, n-hexane, toluene, petroleum ether, etc.) in water. These findings provide a promising material to improve the removal efficiency of hazardous organics for water purification.

Biomimetic preparation of a polycaprolactone membrane with a hierarchical structure as a highly efficient oil–water separator

Xiaoxiao Zhang,Jie Zhao,Liang Ma,Xuejuan Shi,Lili Li

A superhydrophobic, superoleophilic and eco-friendly polycaprolactone composite (PCLC) membrane with a hierarchical microsphere structure was developed by alternated electrospinning/electrospraying technology. The PCLC membrane was subtly designed with two parts to imitate the lotus leaf structure: low surface energy SiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of PCL smooth microspheres (PCLM) imitate the hydrophobic bio-wax of the lotus leaf surface, and PCL porous microspheres (PCLM-porous) imitate the surface nano-protrusions of the lotus leaf. The average size of the potholes on the PCLM-porous surface was only about 300 nm. The combination of small potholes and the hierarchical structure of the PCLC and SiO2 nanoparticles contributed to the superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity of the PCLC membrane. The water contact angle (WCA) of PCLC could reach 162.0 ± 1.5°. Compared with membranes based on PCLM-porous (WCA = 148.9 ± 1.2°) and 4% SiO2 nanoparticles on PCLM (WCA = 158.6 ± 2.3°), the PCLC membrane not only showed higher superhydrophobicity but also ultra-high oil–water separation efficiency, oil flux and stability. Most importantly, the PCLC membrane exhibited excellent oil adsorption performance for four different oils with different densities, and the separation efficiency remained ultrahigh (>99.93%) even after 10 cycles. This innovative work may provide an effective strategy for the design of biomimetic biopolymers with promising applications in the field of eco-friendly separators.
