A super-elastic wearable strain sensor based on PU/CNTs yarns for human-motion detection

Yunlei Yin,Cheng Guo,Wanwan Li,Hongchen Liu,Qianqian Mu

Yarn-based strain sensors increasingly garner attention for their potential applications in intelligent wearable electronic devices. Developing highly elastic conductive composite yarns and integrating them into fabrics poses a significant challenge in manufacturing flexible electronic devices. In this study, a polyurethane (PU)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite nanofiber yarn was successfully and continuously prepared using a simple conjugate spinning technique. The resulting yarn exhibited excellent mechanical properties, with a high tensile strength of up to 56.7 MPa and an elongation at break of 504 %. A yarn with a dual conductive network was created using CNTs ink dip-coating. It demonstrated excellent conductivity (8.77 S/cm), exceptional linear variation, and reusability. The sensor remained stable after 1000 cycles of testing, exhibiting a relative electrical resistance change of up to 594 % under a strain of 350 %. Additionally, taking advantage of the inherent knittability of one-dimensional yarn structures, a susceptible wearable textile-type strain sensor was successfully developed using textile knitting technology. This sensor can be directly attached to the surface of the human body for real-time monitoring of human body dynamics. This sensor showcases significant promise for use in flexible, intelligent, wearable electronic devices.

Multilevel Printed Wearable Radio-Frequency Intelligent Identification Platform for Object Recognition

Lu Ju,Buyun Yu,Hao Chen,Zhida Xiao,Wei Xiang,Junlin Zhan,Chao Zhang,Zhenguo Liu,Li Tao,Weibing Lu

As a noncontact target recognition technique, radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology demonstrates attractive potential in constructing human–machine interaction (HMI) systems. However, the current development of RFID technologies in HMI systems is hampered by critical challenges in manufacturing high-performance RFID readers with superior flexibility and wearing comfort. Hence, we propose a multilevel printing strategy to overcome the difficulties in manufacturing high-performance large-scale microwave systems. Compared to traditional processes, the RFID system fabricated by the hybrid additive manufacturing technique exhibits equivalent electromagnetic performance and has obvious advantages in terms of manufacturing cost and environmental friendliness. A printed reconfigurable antenna with intelligent radiation mode is seamlessly integrated with the reader circuit via a “one-step” printing technology. Additionally, through chemical doping and artificial intelligence (AI) prediction, we have developed a modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulation to miniaturize the system volume and enhance reliability. Electromagnetic and mechanical measurements demonstrated that our flexible RFID platform offers superior reliability and stability during long-term daily use. The RFID platform possesses exceptional capabilities in target positioning and accurate identification, demonstrating unique potential in noncontact sensing and recognition, which are highly demanded by flexible and wearable HMI systems.

Comfortable wearable thermoelectric generator with high output power

Miao Lei,Zhu Sijing,Liu Chengyan,Gao Jie,Zhang Zhongwei,Peng Ying,Chen Jun-Liang,Gao Yangfan,Liang Jisheng,Mori Takao

Wearable thermoelectric generators provide a reliable power generation method for self-powered wearable electronic devices. However, there has been a lack of research regarding the comfort of wearable thermoelectric generators. Here we propose a design for a comfortable wearable thermoelectric generators system with high output power based on sandwiched thermoelectric model. This model paves the way for simultaneously optimizing comfort (skin temperature and pressure perception) and output power by systematically considering a variety of thermal resistive environments and bending states, the properties of the thermoelectric and encapsulation materials, and the device structure. To verify this strategy, we fabricate wearable thermoelectric generators using Mg-based thermoelectric materials. These materials have great potential for replacing traditional Bi 2 Te 3 -based materials and enable our wearable thermoelectric generators with a power density of 18.4 μWcm −2 under a wearing pressure of 0.8 kPa and with a skin temperature of 33 °C, ensuring the wearer’s comfort.

Highly stretchable, healable, sensitive double-network conductive hydrogel for wearable sensor

Wenhui Zheng,Yangyang Li,Lijuan Xu,Yudong Huang,Zaixing Jiang,Bing Li

Hydrogel-based strain sensor with the stretchable, self-healable and wearable properties has made great contributions in the field of modern electronics. However, currently, ultra-high stretchability and strain sensitivity are required to satisfy the practical applications for polyvinyl alcohol-borate (PVA-Borax) hydrogel-based strain sensor. Herein, we fabricated a new highly stretchable hydrogel strain sensor based on PVA-Borax and (±)-α-Thioctic acid-iron (III) (TA-Fe 3+ ) double-network hydrogel matrix and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The strain sensors displayed an extremely wide strain-sensing range (≈1350% fracture strain) with a gauge factor of 11.50 and showed rapid recovery of electrical properties in the cut-healing cycles (<4s). Compared with previous PVA-Borax based strain sensors materials, the new double-network hydrogel strain sensors achieved more favorable functionalities in human motion monitoring, which can satisfy versatile application requirements ranging from extremely stretchable, wearable, self-healable electronic devices to future soft robot.

An intrinsically flexible phase change film for wearable thermal managements

Yan Kou,Keyan Sun,Jipeng Luo,Feng Zhou,Haibo Huang,Zhong-Shuai Wu,Quan Shi

Phase change materials (PCMs) involving significant amounts of latent heat absorbing and releasing at a constant transition temperature have been extensively utilized for thermal management of electronic devices. However, it is still a great challenge to apply thermal management for wearable devices using PCMs due to their solid rigidity and liquid leakage . Although considerable efforts have been dedicated to constructing flexible composite PCMs by physically blending bulk PCMs with different flexible polymers, design and fabrication of intrinsically flexible PCM films still remain unexplored. Herein, we report an intrinsically flexible PCM film with apparent solid-solid phase transition performance, outstanding self-support and shape-conformable property for wearable thermal management. Remarkably, the as-obtained PCM film behaves adjustable phase transition enthalpy and temperature in the region from about (5 to 60)°C, long-term cycling stability up to 1000 cycles, highly mechanical flexibility and remarkable shape tailorability and foldability. Notably, such flexible PCM films are easily integrated into wearable devices with a flexible graphene film as thermal source, revealing superior temperature control behaviors, together with unprecedented electro-thermal and photo-thermal energy conversion performance. The intrinsically flexible PCM film developed in this work is holding great potential for next-generation flexible thermal management electronics .

Practical and Durable Flexible Strain Sensors Based on Conductive Carbon Black and Silicone Blends for Large Scale Motion Monitoring Applications

Yun Xia,Qi Zhang,Xue E. Wu,Tim V. Kirk,Xiao Dong Chen

Presented is a flexible capacitive strain sensor, based on the low cost materials silicone (PDMS) and carbon black (CB), that was fabricated by casting and curing of successive silicone layers—a central PDMS dielectric layer bounded by PDMS/CB blend electrodes and packaged by exterior PDMS films. It was effectively characterized for large flexion-angle motion wearable applications, with strain sensing properties assessed over large strains (50%) and variations in temperature and humidity. Additionally, suitability for monitoring large tissue deformation was established by integration with an in vitro digestive model. The capacitive gauge factor was approximately constant at 0.86 over these conditions for the linear strain range (3 to 47%). Durability was established from consistent relative capacitance changes over 10,000 strain cycles, with varying strain frequency and elongation up to 50%. Wearability and high flexion angle human motion detection were demonstrated by integration with an elbow band, with clear detection of motion ranges up 90°. The device’s simple structure and fabrication method, low-cost materials and robust performance, offer promise for expanding the availability of wearable sensor systems. Keywords:flexible;capacitive sensor;strain sensor;durable;wearable;low cost

A self-powered wearable sweat-evaporation-biosensing analyzer for building sports big data

Hongye Guan,Tianyan Zhong,Haoxuan He,Tianming Zhao,Lili Xing,Yan Zhang,Xinyu Xue

A novel self-powered wearable sweat-lactate analyzer for building sports big data has been realized basing on sweat-evaporation-biosensing coupling effect. The self-powered biosensor in analyzer is fabricated from porous carbon film (modified with lactate oxidase). The hydrophilic carbon can soak up sweat, and harvest environmental thermal energy to generate electricity through nature sweat-evaporation. The outputting voltage increases with increasing sweat-lactate concentration, which can be regarded as biosensing signal. The surface enzymatic reaction can change the zeta potential of carbon and thus influence the outputting voltage. On the flexible substrate , the biosensor can be integrated with wireless transmitter and capacitor, constructing a self-powered wearable sweat-lactate analyzer. The analyzer can detect sweat-lactate concentration on athlete's skin, wirelessly transmit the exercise physiological information to terminal, and build sports big data. This work can provoke a new research direction for realizing self-powered wearable exercise-analyzing system, and can also promote the development of sports big data.

Wearable Fiber-Based Organic Electrochemical Transistors as a Platform for Highly Sensitive Dopamine Monitoring

Xing Qing,Yuedan Wang,Yang Zhang,Xincheng Ding,Weibing Zhong,Dong Wang,Wenwen Wang,Qiongzhen Liu,Ke Liu,Mufang Li,Zhentan Lu

Fiber-based organic electrochemical transistors (FECTs) provide a new platform for the realization of an ultrafast and ultrasensitive biosensor, especially for the wearable dopamine (DA)-monitoring device. Here, we presented a fully filament-integrated fabric, it exhibited remarkable mechanical compatibility with the human body, and the minimum sensing unit was an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) based on PVA-co-PE nanofibers (NFs) and polypyrrole (PPy) nanofiber network. The introduction of NFs notably increased the specific surface area and hydrophilicity of the PA6 filament, resulting in the formation of a large area of intertwined PPy nanofiber network. The electrical performance of PPy nanofiber network-modified fibers improved considerably. For the common FECTs, the typical on/off ratio was up to two orders of magnitude, and the temporal recovery time between on and off states was shortened to 0.34 s. Meanwhile, the device exhibited continuous cycling stability. In addition, the performances of FECT-based dopamine sensors depending on different gate electrodes have also been investigated. The PPy/NFs/PA6 filament-based dopamine sensor was more superior to the gold and platinum (Pt) wires, and the sensor presented long-term sensitivity with a detection region from 1 nM to 1 μM, rapid response time to a set of DA concentrations, remarkable selectivity in the presence of sodium chloride, uric acid, ascorbic acid and glucose, and superior reproducibility. Moreover, it could also be woven into the fabric product. The novel and wearable FECT device shows the potential to become the state-of-the-art DA-monitoring platform.

Shaodi Zheng,Xiaotian Wu,Yanhao Huang,Zewang Xu,Wei Yang,Zhengying Liu,Shilin Huang,Banghu Xie,Mingbo Yang

A highly stretchable and sensitive multifunctional piezoresistive sensor was reported. These sensors contain micro-cracked and hollowed-out polyaniline (PANI) foams which are supported by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The cracked-PANI foam/PDMS (C-PF/PDMS) strain sensor shows high sensitivity with a gauge factor of ∼10 and excellent linearity and high durability over 500 stretching-releasing cycles. The fabricated C-PF/PDMS pressure sensor exhibits a sensitivity of ∼0.055 kPa −1 in the pressure range of 0–5.0 kPa, a low detection limit of 4 Pa, a fast response time (∼60 ms), recovery time (∼90 ms) and the capability of detecting and distinguishing various mechanical stimuli including compression, shear and torsion forces. When the sensor is attached to the human body, it can function as a health-monitoring device by detecting various human motions such as the bending of fingers and wrist, phonation and the wrist pulse.

Transparent, Conductive Hydrogels with High Mechanical Strength and Toughness

Xiuru Xu,Chubin He,Feng Luo,Hao Wang,Zhengchun Peng

Transparent, conductive hydrogels with good mechanical strength and toughness are in great demand of the fields of biomedical and future wearable smart electronics. We reported a carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)–calcium chloride (CaCl2)/polyacrylamide (PAAm)/poly(N-methylol acrylamide (PNMA) transparent, tough and conductive hydrogel containing a bi-physical crosslinking network through in situ free radical polymerization. It showed excellent light transmittance (>90%), excellent toughness (10.72 MJ/m3), good tensile strength (at break, 2.65 MPa), breaking strain (707%), and high elastic modulus (0.30 MPa). The strain sensing performance is found with high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor 9.18, 0.5% detection limit), wide strain response range, fast response and recovery time, nearly zero hysteresis and good repeatability. This study extends the transparent, tough, conductive hydrogels to provide body-surface wearable devices that can accurately and repeatedly monitor the movement of body joints, including the movements of wrists, elbows and knee joints. This study provided a broad development potential for tough, transparent and conductive hydrogels as body-surface intelligent health monitoring systems and implantable soft electronics. Keywords:transparent hydrogels;toughness;wearable sensors

Efficient Welding of Silver Nanowires embedded in a Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Film for Robust Wearable Electronics

Lingling Zhang,Yuan Wang,Jinzheng Gui,Xuening Wang,Rui Li,Wei Liu,Chengliang Sun,Xingzhong Zhao,Shishang Guo

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are explored as promising transparent electrodes for flexible plastic devices. However, high NW–NW contact resistance and poor adhesion on bare substrates currently preclude AgNWs from use in transparent wearable applications. Here, a highly efficient large-scale strategy of partially burying AgNWs in the surface of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) transparent substrates is reported to greatly improve the conductivity and adhesion of the nanowires. The conductivity of AgNWs is doubled when forming the PVDF/AgNWs electrodes, which requires only 10 min and did not need any post-treatment. Due to the high flexibility and abradability of PVDF film, the conductive surface of PVDF/AgNWs electrodes with junctions and parts of the AgNWs embedded in the PVDF film is robust during multiple deformations, adhesion test, and rubbing test. The chemical resistance is also improved because of the chemical stability of PVDF substrate and the conductive structure of the PVDF/AgNWs electrode. It is further shown that the transparent PVDF/AgNWs electrode is robust enough for wearable applications, such as wearable microcircuits, e-skins, and biomechanical energy harvesters. This work is believed to be a potential step toward applications of PVDF/AgNWs electrode in transparent wearable electronics.

Superelastic Carbon Aerogel with Ultrahigh and Wide-Range Linear Sensitivity

Yijie Hu,Hao Zhuo,Zehong Chen,Kunze Wu,Qingsong Luo,Qingzhong Liu,Shuangshuang Jing,Chuanfu Liu,Linxin Zhong,Runcang Sun,Xinwen Peng

Compressible and elastic carbon materials offer many advantages and have promising applications in various electronic devices. However, fabricating carbon materials with super elasticity, fatigue resistance, and high and wide-range linear sensitivity for pressure or strain remains a great challenge. Herein, a facile and sustainable route is developed to fabricate a carbon aerogel with not only superior mechanical performances but also exceptionally high and wide-range linear sensitivity by using chitosan as a renewable carbon source and cellulose nanocrystal as a nanoreinforcement or support. The as-prepared carbon aerogel with wave-shaped layers shows high compressibility, super elasticity, stable strain–current response, and excellent fatigue resistance (94% height retention after 50 000 cycles). More importantly, it demonstrates both an ultrahigh sensitivity of 103.5 kPa–1 and a very wide linear range of 0–18 kPa. In addition, the carbon aerogel has a very low detection limit (1.0 Pa for pressure and 0.05% for strain). The carbon aerogel also can be bended to detect a small angle change. These superiorities render its applications in various wearable devices.
