Clothing comfort sensing system based on triboelectric and tribological behavior of fabrics

Min Feng,Yange Feng,Jiahui Cheng,Zhuopei Zhang,Di Yang,Changhe Du,Daoai Wang

Static electricity accumulated on fabrics often causes discharged discomfort, fire, explosion, and cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, the electricity can be harvested and used for self-powered wearable devices . Therefore, it is essential to regulate fabric triboelectricity through studying the relationship between friction coefficients and triboelectric charges. In this paper, a reciprocating tribometer coupled with triboelectric testing instruments is designed to collect in-situ tribological and triboelectric properties for laterally sliding fabric based triboelectric nanogenerators (F-TENGs). In this case, the regulation factors involve motion conditions (including load, frequency, friction angle , etc.), surface components and environments. The results show that faster sliding speed and lower humidity produce higher triboelectric outputs of F-TENGs. Especially, amino groups modified silk shows an extremely strong electron-donating ability and achieves a high triboelectric current of 382.2 nA when paired with polyimide , which is enhanced by 1.67 times compared with silk. Most importantly, the friction coefficient values of F-TENGs show almost the same trend as the triboelectric outputs. Based on this, a sensing system for monitoring comfort level of fabrics is successfully designed through rubbing tested fabrics and observing indicator lamps. This work proposes a tribological approach with valuable insights of the underlying mechanism of triboelectric charging and extended applications.

Design of humidity-resistant triboelectric nanogenerator based on CAU-10-(SO3H)0.08(OH)0.92/PVC composite film for producing hydrogen by water electrolysis application

Junhui Wu,Baoping Yang,Jiahao Zhou,Ming Zhong,Yong Ding,kun zhao,Ye Yuan

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are capable of effectively scavenging ambient tiny mechanical energy and converting it into electrical energy, offering significant potential for applications in self-powered sensing and electrical energy storage systems. However, the practical utility of TENGs in high-humidity environments is severely restricted due to the detrimental effects of moisture. Herein, we have fabricated a TENG utilizing a CAU-10-(SO3H)0.08(OH)0.92/polyvinyl chloride (PVC) composite film as the negative triboelectric layer and Al foil as the positive triboelectric layer, which exhibits the ability to sustain stable output voltage and current even in highly ambient humidity conditions. At a relative humidity (RH) of 20%, the 2 wt%-CAU-10-(SO3H)0.08(OH)0.92//PVC composite film-based TENG achieved an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 318 V, a short circuit-current (Isc) of 30 μA, a short-circuit charge transfer (Qsc) of 77 nC and a peak power of 2.69 mW. The device still maintains stable output voltage and current signals even at 90% RH. There is no obvious decline in the output voltage of the TENG after continuous working for about 36,000 operational cycles. Through a transformer and a rectifier circuit, the TENG was capable of charging a 10 mF capacitor to 2.7 V in 3.48 h, which was subsequently employed for water electrolysis to generate hydrogen. After 30 electrolysis cycles, the system produced 54 µL of H2 at a rate of 143.6 µL/h/m². This work offers a reference for the development of CAU-10-(SO3H)0.08(OH)0.92-based composites with humidity resistance, which is essential for the application of TENGs in high-humidity environments.

Ultra-high output triboelectric nanogenerator based on synergies of material modification and charge pumping

Zekun Li,Jitao Liu,Mengshuang Chi,Xue Miao,Hanxiao Yang,Weiqi Cui,Aifang Yu,Junyi Zhai

On the road to large-scale industrialization of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), higher output is the constant quest. Here, inspired by the ubiquitous synergies in nature, an ultra-high-output TENG is proposed based on the synergistic effect of internal modification of materials along with the external integration of a charge pumping module. The carefully chosen poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) film possesses strong polarization and high permittivity, which leads to excellent triboelectric properties, and can be further enhanced by doping BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanoparticles . Meanwhile, the elaborately designed and optimized charge pumping module endows it with the ability to pump affluent charges. As a consequence, a TENG based on 8 µm P(VDF-HFP)/BTO 1 wt% composite film can achieve an ultra-high total transfer charge density (TTCD) of 3.5 mC/m 2 under optimal charge pumping conditions. Compared to the output of the P(VDF-HFP)/BTO-based TENG (0.1 mC/m 2 ) and the output of the P(VDF-HFP)-based TENG under charge pumping (2.6 mC/m 2 ), the output of the P(VDF-HFP)/BTO-based TENG under charge pumping is greater than the sum of the above two devices, which indicates that the proposed synergistic effect for designing an ultra-high-output TENG is remarkable and successful. Moreover, a novel charge transfer pattern based on synergistic effect is proposed, expounding the role inherent modifications of P(VDF-HFP) and external integration of charge pumping modules play. This work presents a concept that is at the forefront of contemporary designs for ultra-high output TENGs, providing insight into the preparation of high-performance TENGs in a state-of-the-art manner.

Self-powered noncontact triboelectric nanogenerators with microstructured square-loop surface and dielectric electron-blocking layer for far-distance motion perception and trajectory tracking

Jingle Duan,Gang Yue,Honghao Li,Teng Liu,Peng Wang,Wei Yu,Peng Shang,Chuizhou Meng,Shijie Guo

Continuous monitoring of indoor human activities is crucial for the healthcare of elder people or patients. The self-powered noncontact triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) sensor has been recently developed as a promising noncontact sensing tool with many advantages, but its capability of detecting object motion in a far distance still remains inferior. Herein, by implementing multiple strategies of micro-structuring triboelectric surface, introducing dielectric layer , and using functional nano fillers , we develop a single-electrode-mode noncontact TENG sensor by constructing a triboelectric cobalt nanoporous carbon/Ecoflex nanocomposite layer with microstructured square-loop surface on top of a dielectric copper calcium titanate/Ecoflex nanocomposite layer with colossal permittivity. After in-depth optimization of the material selection, component composition and structure design, the developed sensor with effective electrode area of 6.25 cm 2 can deliver a high output voltage of 29 V at 1 cm, and is capable of detecting motions at an extremely far distance of 6 m. Towards practical applications, the TENG unit for single-motion detection of mouth breathing, human walking, and basketball bouncing are demonstrated. Furthermore, multiple TENG units can be assembled into array to realize the complex trajectory tracking for the use of proximity touch pad, indoor human activity monitoring, and garage car parking. This work for the first time extends the TENG noncontact sensing capability to several meters, which is potential in the proximity motion detection and indoor activity monitoring.

Scalable and Ultra-Sensitive Nanofibers Coaxial Yarn-Woven Triboelectric Nanogenerator Textile Sensors for Real-Time Gait Analysis

Yihan Wang,Lang Chu,Si Meng,Mingxuan Yang,Yidan Yu,Xiaokang Deng,Cheng Qi,Tiantian Kong,Zhou Liu

Yarn-woven triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have greatly advanced wearable sensor technology, but their limited sensitivity and stability hinder broad adoption. To address these limitations, Poly(VDF-TrFE) and P(olyadiohexylenediamine (PA66)-based nanofibers coaxial yarns (NCYs) combining coaxial conjugated electrospinning and online conductive adhesive coating are developed. The integration of these NCYs led to enhanced TENGs (NCY-TENGs), notable for their flexibility, stretchability, and improved sensitivity, which is ideal for capturing body motion signals. One significant application of this technology is the fabrication of smart insoles from NCY-TENG plain-woven fabrics. These insoles are highly sensitive and possess antibacterial, breathable, and washable properties, making them ideal for real-time gait monitoring in patients with diabetic foot conditions. The NCY-TENGs and their derivatives show immense potential for a variety of wearable electronic devices, representing a considerable advancement in the field of wearable sensors.

Triboelectric tactile sensor for pressure and temperature sensing in high-temperature applications

Liu Yanhua,Wang Jinlong,Liu Tao,Wei Zhiting,Luo Bin,Chi Mingchao,Zhang Song,Cai Chenchen,Gao Cong,Zhao Tong,Wang Shuangfei,Nie Shuangxi

Skin-like sensors capable of detecting multiple stimuli simultaneously have great potential in cutting-edge human-machine interaction. However, realizing multimodal tactile recognition beyond human tactile perception still faces significant challenges. Here, an extreme environments-adaptive multimodal triboelectric sensor was developed, capable of detecting pressure/temperatures beyond the range of human perception. Based on triboelectric nanogenerator technology, an asymmetric structure capable of independently outputting dual signals was designed to improve perception sensitivity. By converting the signals and the stimuli into feature matrices, parallel perception of complex objects (with a recognition rate of 94%) and temperature at high temperatures was achieved. The proposed multimodal triboelectric tactile sensor represents progress in maximum detection range and rapid response, realizing the upper limit of human skin’s high-temperature sensing (60 °C) with a working temperature of 200 °C. The proposed self-powered multimodal sensing system offers a wider range of possibilities for human/robot/environment interaction applications.

In-situ welding and thermal activation enabled robust nanofibers based triboelectric nanogenerator for sustainable energy harvesting

Chuanwei Zhi,Hanbai Wu,Jinlian Hu

Nanofiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) show great promise in energy harvesting and sensing applications. However, the poor strength and the instability of the nanofiber structures lead to the constraints on the durability and the lack of stability in the output performance. In this study, BaTiO 3 @PVDF-HFP nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, in which BaTiO 3 nanoparticles enhanced the charge trapping ability of the nanofibers and provided nucleation sites for β-phase growth. Subsequent solvent and annealing treatment in-situ welded the nanofibers, which greatly improved the mechanical strength and stability of the nanofiber membranes. The annealing process further thermally activated the electroactive β-phase in the PVDF-HFP, which increased the surface charge density of the nanofibers. A flexible TENG based on BaTiO 3 @PVDF-HFP-p nanofiber was prepared to harvest mechanical energy, which could achieve a maximum output of 482.5 V and 1.9 W m −2 , the voltage is more than 1.2–1.5 times higher compared to uncrosslinked nanofibers. The BaTiO 3 @PVDF-HFP-p-based TENG maintains ultra-stable V oc generation over 7000 cycles compared to the nanofibers without solvent and annealing treated. Finally, its practical application in harvesting ambient mechanical energy was demonstrated, which can harvest wind energy to power LEDs and small electronic devices such as temperature and humidity sensors .

Highly stretchable and transparent triboelectric nanogenerator based on multilayer structured stable electrode for self-powered wearable sensor

Jin Liu,Ling Zhang,Ning Wang,Chunzhong Li

In recent years, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have grasped considerable attentions as sustainable power sources for next-generation electronics. However, far too rare research has been carried out to simultaneously achieve stretchability and transparency in TENGs. Here, we developed a stretchable and transparent TENG based on a Mxene-AgNWs-Mxene-polyurethane nanofibers (MAMP) electrode which exhibits excellent optoelectronic properties with low sheet resistance of 10.1 Ω/sq at the transmittance of 87.6%. Meanwhile, the as-prepared electrode achieves outstanding stretchability and durability with maximum strain of 180%, as well as 42% resistance variation after 1000 stretch-release cycles at 65% strain, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of the reinforcement of nanofiber-based scaffold and the improvement of adhesion between conductive network and elastic matrix by Mxene. Furthermore, the stretchable and transparent MAMP-TENG is employed as energy harvester and motion sensor, producing output voltage of 38 V and current density of 1.67 mA/m 2 just by hand tapping . The integration of sustainable power source and motion sensor with the attributes of stretchable and transparent in one makes it promising for applications in wearable devices and human-machine systems.

Novel chitosan/ZnO bilayer film with enhanced humidity-tolerant property: Endowing triboelectric nanogenerator with acetone analysis capability

Bohao Liu,Si Wang,Zhen Yuan,Zaihua Duan,Qiuni Zhao,Yajie Zhang,Yuanjie Su,Yadong Jiang,Guangzhong Xie,Huiling Tai

Endowing triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with excellent acetone-sensing and humidity-tolerant property is an effective strategy for prospective breath diagnosis of diabetes without additional power supplies. In this work, a TENG based on chitosan (CTS)/zinc oxide (ZnO) bilayer film, that acted both as sensing layer and triboelectric layer, was successfully developed for room-temperature acetone detection with enhanced humidity-tolerant property. The as-fabricated CTS/ZnO based triboelectric acetone sensor (CTS/ZnO-TAS) exhibited higher sensitivity (1.9545%/ppm), superior response (19.02% under 10 ppm of acetone) and lower detection limit (1 ppm) than the CTS-TAS under 89.3%RH. Meanwhile, the better humidity-tolerant property of CTS/ZnO-TAS was attributed to the formation of abundant hydrogen bonds between CTS and ZnO, which could occupy massive hydrophilic functional groups of the sensing materials, resulting in the decrease of active water adsorption sites. Finally, a sensing mechanism coupled triboelectric effect with gas sensing principle was established to interpret the enhanced acetone-sensing performance of the CTS/ZnO-TAS. This work proposes a CTS/ZnO-based TENG with enhanced humidity-tolerant property towards acetone sensing, demonstrating a potential application in noninvasive diabetes diagnosis.

Charge boosting and storage by tailoring rhombus all-inorganic perovskite nanoarrays for robust triboelectric nanogenerators

Jian Du,Jialong Duan,Xiya Yang,Yudi Wang,Yanyan Duan,Qunwei Tang

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an advanced energy conversion device to harvest low-frequent mechanical energy from nature, and boosting triboelectric charge density and regulating charge storage behavior are promising solutions to improve their output performances. In this work, rhombus Co(OH)(CO 3 ) 0.5 /Pt/CsPbIBr 2 multilayer nanoarray is tailored as a friction layer coupled with poly(vinylidene fluoride) to increase the in-depth distribution of triboelectric charges and to block the combination with induced positive charges on the electrode, the champion perovskite TENG achieves a short-circuit current density of 3.1 μA cm −2 , an open-circuit voltage of 243 V and a triboelectric charge density of 9.57 nC cm −2 , which can instantaneously light up 61 commercial LEDs at per contact. Due to the reduced charge loss in metallic electrode and increased internal-space-charge zones of triboelectric charges in frictional layer assisted by the bottom Co(OH)(CO 3 ) 0.5 and intercalated Pt layers, the tri-layered Co(OH)(CO 3 ) 0.5 /Pt/CsPbIBr 2 raises the power density peak by a factor of 4.5, reaching 2.04 W m −2 at a contact frequency of 0.5 Hz. In addition, the perovskite TENGs demonstrate an excellent stability over 1350 cycles test in ambient atmosphere. This work may provide new insights on manufacturing semiconductor-featured TENG platforms.

Boosting performances of triboelectric nanogenerators by optimizing dielectric properties and thickness of electrification layer

Xiaofang Kang,Chongxiang Pan,Yanghui Chen,Xiong Pu

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with excellent flexibility and high outputs are promising for powering wearable/wireless electronics with electricity converted from ubiquitous mechanical energies in the working environment. In this work, the effects of the dielectric properties and thickness of the electrification film on the performance of the TENG are discussed. BaTiO3 nanoparticles are added into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to improve the dielectric constant of the composite film. The TENG using a BaTiO3/PVDF nanocomposite film with 11.25 vol% BaTiO3 as the tribo-negative electrification layer is demonstrated to be the optimized one, and generates an open-circuit voltage of 131 V and transferred short-circuit charge density of 89 μC m−2, 6.5 fold higher than those of a TENG using bare a PVDF layer. Furthermore, by reducing the thickness of the BaTiO3/PVDF film to 5 μm, the voltage and charge density increase to 161 V and 112 μC m−2, respectively, and an instantaneous peak power density of 225.6 mW m−2 is obtained.

Electroassisted Core-Spun Triboelectric Nanogenerator Fabrics for IntelliSense and Artificial Intelligence Perception

Chao Ye,Shuo Yang,Jing Ren,Shaojun Dong,Leitao Cao,Ying Pei,Shengjie Ling

IntelliSense fabrics that can sense transient mechanical stimuli are widely anticipated in flexible and wearable electronics. However, most IntelliSense fabrics developed so far are only sensitive to quasi-static forces, such as stretching, bending, or twisting. In this work, a sheath-core triboelectric nanogenerator (SC-TENG) yarn was developed via a rational design, electroassisted core spinning technique, that consisted of a rough nanoscale dielectric surface and mechanically strong and electrically conductive core yarns. The resulting system was used to sense and distinguish the instantaneous mechanical stimuli generated by different materials. To further improve the sensing accuracy, a machine learning model, based on a classification coding and recurrent neural network, was built to predict the type of contact materials from the peak profiles of output voltages. With these experimental and algorithmic optimizations, we finally used SC-TENG yarn to identify the type of materials in real-time. Moreover, by applying Internet of Things techniques, we investigated that SC-TENG yarn could be integrated into an IntelliSense system to recognize and control various electronic and electrical systems, demonstrating promising applications in wearable energy supply, IntelliSense fabrics, and human–machine interactions.
