Poly(dopamine) assisted epoxy functionalization of hexagonal boron nitride for enhancement of epoxy resin anticorrosion performance

Chunli Zhang,Yi He,Yingqing Zhan,Lei Zhang,Heng Shi,Zhonghao Xu

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is modified by a simple and green method based on self-oxidation of dopamine and epoxy groups functionalized silane (KH560) grafting. The surface modification and microstructure of h-BN are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The poly(dopamine) and epoxy groups not only increase the compatibility of the h-BN and enhance its interaction with epoxy matrix but also exhibit a remarkable superiority in enhancing the anticorrosion performance of epoxy coatings. In addition, the anticorrosion mechanisms of h-BN@PDA-KH560 are tentatively discussed. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Large-area hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets exfoliated by sodium alginate/Ca2+ assisted ball-milling and their thermal conduction rules in composite films

Songfeng E,Yuan Wang,Yuanming Wang,Jiaming Yang,Junli Ma,Kaiyue Huang,Zhangzi Li,Zhaoqing Lu,Lejia Wang

We discovered that incorporating the Ca 2+ into sodium alginate (SA) solution as ball-milling medium of hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) could increase the lateral size of the exfoliated h -BN nanosheets (BNNSs) at least twice those of pure SA solution obtained, which can be owing to the Ca 2+ −induced crosslinking of SA and enhancement of interfacial adhesion forces between SA and h -BN that not only boost the impacting resistance to milling balls but also the exfoliation energy to h -BN. Based on the crucial role of Ca 2+ in h -BN exfoliation, the large-area and small-thickness BNNSs are produced simultaneously with the increased milling speed and Ca 2+ concentration, which can be assembled into highly compact and horizontal oriented structures with aramid nanofibers (ANFs) due to the favorable compatibility, dispersity, and interfacial binding force. This kind of compact and ordered structure enables ANF/BNNS film with high thermal conductivity (TC) since the connective and high-efficiency heat conduction paths, of which the highest TC is 27.57 W⋅m −1 ⋅K -1 . Compared with soft and molecular SA chains, the ANFs show an incredible ability to guide the horizontal orientation of BNNSs for the superior TCs of their composites.

Nanoarchitectonics of BN/AgNWs/Epoxy Composites with High Thermal Conductivity and Electrical Insulation

Xue Li,Ling Weng,Hebing Wang,Xiaoming Wang

To promote the construction of the thermal network in the epoxy resin (EP), a certain proportion of silver nanowires (AgNWs) coupled with the hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanoplates were chosen as fillers to improve the thermal conductivity of EP resin. Before preparing the composites, BN was treated by silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550), and AgNWs was coated by dopamine hydrochloride. The BN/AgNWs/EP composites were prepared after curing, and the thermal conductivity and dielectric properties of the composites was tested. Results showed that the AgNWs and BN were uniformly dispersed in epoxy resin. It synergistically built a thermal network and greatly increased the thermal conductivity of the composites, which increased 9% after adding AgNWs. Moreover, the electrical property test showed that the addition of AgNWs had little effect on the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the composites, indicating a rather good electrical insulation of the composites. Keywords:epoxy resin;boron nitride;silver nanowires;thermal conductivity

ZnIn2S4 nanostructure grown on electronegative h-BN for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ligang Ma,Yihuan Ding,Chao Lin,Yuqing Yang,Le Xu,Hui Qiu,Huilin Jiang,Xiang Song,Xiaoqian Ai

The photo-corrosion issue inherent in metal sulfide semiconductors is quite pronounced, making the enhancement of electron-hole pair separation efficiency in these photocatalysts a pivotal strategy for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen production. This study introduces a novel approach where hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) acts as a substrate for the in situ growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanostructures, resulting in the formation of h -BN@ZnIn 2 S 4 (BN@ZIS) nanocomposites. The electronegativity of h -BN nanosheets is harnessed to facilitate the recombination or electrostatic attraction of photogenerated holes in the ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst. This strategy effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which is crucial for enhancing photocatalytic performance. The microstructure, morphology and optical properties of BN@ZIS nanocomposites were meticulously investigated. The findings reveal that the incorporation of h -BN nanosheets loads to a more uniform dispersion of the ZnIn 2 S 4 nanostructure, which not only increases the specific surface area but also fosters a tight heterojunction interface between h -BN and ZnIn 2 S 4 . In conclusion, the photocatalytic hydrogen production capabilities of the BN@ZIS nanocomposites were rigorously evaluated. Pure h -BN lacks photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. Conversely, the optimized BN@ZIS composite demonstrated a remarkable enhancement, exhibiting a photocatalytic efficiency that is 9.65 times greater than that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . Furthermore, a plausible mechanism by which BN@ZIS augments photocatalytic hydrogen production has been proposed. This strategy, leveraging the synergistic interaction between h -BN and ZnIn 2 S 4 , is anticipated to be applicable to other semiconductor systems, opening avenues for the advancement of photocatalytic technologies.

Robust and Density Tunable Kevlar/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Microribbon Aerogels with Excellent Thermal, Mechanical, and Oil-Absorption Properties

Hu Long,Yaming Hu,Jiaxin Liu,Wei Wang,Guanglan Liao,Anthony Chun Yin Yuen,Guan-Heng Yeoh,Yuan Hu,Tielin Shi

With rapid advancements in aerospace and supersonic aircraft technology, there is a growing demand for multifunctional thermal protective materials. Aerogels, known for their low density and high porosity, have garnered significant attention in this regard. However, developing a lightweight multifunctional aerogel that combines exceptional thermal and mechanical properties through a straightforward and time-efficient method remains a significant challenge. Herein, a facile and universal approach is developed for the preparation of Kevlar/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) aerogels, in which a spin-assisted method is applied to create robust microribbons and further accelerate solvent displacement. The resulting microribbon scaffold, with its entangled nanofiber–nanosheet morphologies, exhibits sufficient strength to prevent volume shrinkage during drying, thereby allowing precise control over aerogel density. The porous hybrid aerogels, featuring controllable geometric characteristics and tailored densities ranging from 6.9 to 100 mg cm–3, can be successfully fabricated. These aerogels exhibit excellent thermal insulation properties, and the thermal conductivities of the as-prepared KBX aerogels have a wide distribution in the range of 0.0269–0.0450 W m–1 k–1. The thermal stability of the hybrid aerogels is enhanced to 566 °C. Moreover, the resulting hybrid aerogels exhibit an ultrahigh bearing ratio, supporting more than 2000 times their own weight while maintaining stable structural integrity. These aerogels also demonstrate high compressive strength, hydrophobicity, and excellent sorption performance for various oils and solvents. Additionally, the oil-saturated aerogels can be easily recovered through heat treatment or combustion in air. The features endow hybrid Kevlar/h-BN aerogels with significant potential for applications in thermal management, environmental protection, and neutron protection.

The effect of h-BN content on mechanical properties, microstructure and machinability of hot-pressed h-BN/Si3N4 composites

Song Wu,Yongfeng Xia,Ming Zhu,Jun Zhao,Dongxu Yao,Yu-Ping Zeng

Si 3 N 4 ceramics now face new applications and challenges in the semiconductor field. The preparation of h-BN/Si 3 N 4 machinable ceramics incorporating 5–30 vol% h-BN via hot-pressing was carried out. This study systematically explored how the varying h-BN content influenced the composite's microstructure, mechanical attributes, and machinability . The results showed that some of the h-BN was encapsulated by growing Si 3 N 4 grains to form an intragranular structure during the process of hot-pressing, while the remaining h-BN exhibited uniform distribution along grain boundaries. The Si 3 N 4 phase transition in composites was inhibited by excessive h-BN, accompanied by a higher decrease in densification. The sample containing 20 vol% h-BN exhibited the best comprehensive performance, with high mechanical strength and excellent machinability. The bending strength and fracture toughness remained high at 862 MPa and 10.3 MPa m 1/2 , and could be effortlessly machined with cemented carbide drills. Additionally, the machinability of the composites was systematically characterized through observations of crack propagation paths, fitting of R-curves, and mechanical drilling tests.

Fabrication of functionalized boron nitride modified self-healing composite coating for corrosion and wear protection

Long Yi,Shijie Song,Ying Liu

The incompatibility of nanomaterials with resin and the irreversibility of coatings after damage severely limit the anti-corrosion and anti-wear properties of epoxy coatings. Hence, in this work, a f-BNNs-ZB@AFD-EP composite coating with active/passive self-healing properties was prepared to provide excellent corrosion and wear protection. Boron nitride nanosheets with a high aspect ratio were prepared by mechanical exfoliation, and their compatibility with resin was enhanced by polyethyleneimine. The release of benzotriazole from the zeolitic imidazolate framework on the nanosheets and the reconnection of disulfide bond provided excellent active/passive self-healing properties. Moreover, the coating resistance of f-BNNs-ZB@AFD-EP (2.49 × 10 7  Ω⋅cm 2 ) was increased by three orders of magnitude pure epoxy coating (7.95 × 10 5  Ω⋅cm 2 ). Meanwhile, the friction coefficient (0.64) and wear rate (5.00 × 10 −5  mm 3 /N·m) of f-BNNs-ZB@AFD-EP were lower than that of pure composite coating (0.78, 3.50 × 10 −4  mm 3 /N·m). The f-BNNs-ZB@AFD-EP with outstanding properties has great application prospects in the field of material protection.

BN nanosheets in-situ mosaic on MOF-5 derived porous carbon skeleton for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Dandan Jia,Ruoyan Tong,Liangmin Ning,Zewen Yang,Yuting Zhang,Wen Gu,Xin Liu

Graphite anode (specific capacity is only 372 mA h g −1 ) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is not enough for high energy and high power density demands. In this work, MOF-5 was used as a precursor to prepare a porous carbon material embedded with BN (Boron Nitride), while B and N elements will enhance the electron transport speed thus improving the conductivity simultaneously. A large specific surface area of 1790.19 m 2  g −1 was provided with this material because of embedding of lamellar BN, therefore it caused excellent cycling stability and high capacity characteristics in LIBs. The capacity retention is 1290 mA h g −1 at 200 mA g −1 and 683 mA h g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 . This material provides a solution for improving the performance of LIBs, and it can also be a reference for the development in other fields.

Hexagonal boron Nitride@ZnFe2O4 hybrid nanosheet: An ecofriendly flame retardant for polyvinyl alcohol

Xiaodong Wang,Yanjun Yin,Mingling Li,Yuan Hu

An ecofriendly flame retardant was synthesized by hydrothermal method . The structure and morphology of h-BN@ZnFe 2 O 4 were characterized. PVA nanocomposites were prepared by adding h-BN@ZnFe 2 O 4 as filler into PVA. The effect of h-BN@ZnFe 2 O 4 on the flame retardant properties of PVA composites was studied and the flame retardant mechanism was also analyzed. The results showed that the peak heat release rate of PVA nanocomposites was slightly lower than that of pure PVA and the amount of CO , CO 2 , and hydrocarbons produced by the pyrolysis of PVA nanocomposites is less than that of pure PVA. The main reasons for this are the physical barrier effect of h-BN and catalytic carbonization effect of zinc ferrate .

The fabrication and electrical properties of polyimide/boron nitride nanosheets composite films

Ma Lili,Wang Baoxiang,Zhao Shiyi,Hao Chuncheng,Guo Haiquan,Lei Qingquan

Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) and related polyimide (PI)/BNNSs composite films are synthesized by a molten salt intercalation-mechanical assisted stripping method and an in situ method respectively. The structures and morphologies of BNNSs and PI/BNNSs composite film were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). The thermsal stability and electrical properties of the PI/BNNSs composite film were further investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), dynamic mechniacal anlysis (DMA), insulation resistance tester, withstand voltage tester, broadband dielectric–impedance spectroscopy and corona resistance system (CRS) separately. For example, the corona resistance lifetime of PI/2.5BNNSs composite film is 36 min, which is 24 times than that of pure PI film. The result indicates that BNNSs, as a two-dimension material with high aspect ratio and the anisotropic characteristic, can be applied as one corona-resistant material.

Poly(lactic acid) based Pearl Layer Moistureproof Membrane for Flexible Laminated Packaging

Ying Ma,Jingming Zhao,Yanqing Wang,Bo Pang,Yumin Wu,Chuanhui Gao

The development of bio-based polymer materials, such as polylactic acid (PLA) -based polymers, is an effective strategy to reduce dependence on petrochemical-based polymers. However, the preparation of bio-based polymers with high barrier properties is a major challenge. To overcome this challenge, a nacreous layer structure with a ‘ brick and mud ’ pattern is mimicked to improve the overall performance of the material. In this paper, Poly ( L -lactic acid) (PLLA) and Polypropylene Glycol (PPG) was combined to prepare bio-based polyurethane (PU-PLLA), which is used as the slurry structure of nacreous layer. The bio-based biomimetic composite membrane (PU-PLLA/BN) is then obtained by adding boron nitride (BN, brick structure of pearl layer) to it. The water vapor permeability test results show that the permeability of PU-PLLA material can be reduced by more than 50% by 5 wt.% BN, which is because the addition of BN can increase the length and tortuosity of the gas molecular diffusion path in the composite. Therefore, this pearl-inspired PU-PLLA/BN film has excellent moisture resistance, which opens up a broad road for the practical application of PLLA in flexible laminated packaging.

Thermal conductivity improvement in electrically insulating silicone rubber composites by the construction of hybrid three-dimensional filler networks with boron nitride and carbon nanotubes

Yang Xue,Xiaofei Li,Haosheng Wang,Donghai Zhang,Yunfa Chen

In this study, we constructed hybrid three-dimensional (3D) filler networks by simply incorporating a relatively low content of one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs; 0.0005–0.25 vol %) and a certain content of two-dimensional boron nitride (BN; 30 phr) in a silicone rubber (SIR) matrix. As indicated by transmission electron microscopy observation, flexible CNTs can serve as bridges to connect BN platelets in different layers to form hybrid 3D thermally conductive networks; this results in an increase in thermally conductive pathways, and the isolation between CNTs can prevent the formation of electrically conductive networks. Compared to the SIR–BN composite with the same BN content, the SIR–BN–CNT composites exhibited improved thermal conductivity, slightly increased volume resistivity, and comparable breakdown strength without a largely decreased flexibility. When 0.25 vol % CNTs were incorporated, the SIR–BN–CNT composite exhibited 75 and 25% higher thermal conductivities relative to the neat SIR and SIR–BN composite with 30 phr BN, respectively, and a thermal conductivity that was even comparable to SIR–BN composite with 40 phr BN. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
