The dense alumina shell on the surface of aluminum powder will hinder the combustion of aluminum powder and increase its ignition temperature. In this study, the aluminum oxide shell layer on the surface of aluminum powder was removed with hydrofluoric acid by one-pot method, and 3-Perfluorohexyl-1, 2-epoxypropane (PFHP) (F 3 C(CF 2 ) 5 CH 2 C 2 H 3 O) was coated to form a uniform and controllable core-shell Al@PFHP. The core-shell Al@PFHP showed better thermal reaction and ignition performance. The exothermic enthalpy of Al@0.15 PFHP was increased by about 1.9 times, with lower ignition temperature (reduced by about 140 °C) and longer burning duration (increased by about 1.5 times) after coating with PFHP, compared with raw aluminum powder. In addition, the formation of PFHP coating shell can effectively improve the hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance of aluminum powder.

Nanothermite has attracted much attention because of the larger interface contact area between oxidizer and fuel. Usually, one of the important ways to improve the reaction and combustion performance is to make fuel contact with oxidizer more closely, so the preparation of large specific surface area oxidizer is a very effective method. Therefore, tremella NiO were prepared in ethylene glycol using nickel acetate as precursor by means of mediated self-assembly and calcination process, with a specific surface area of 310.69m 2 /g. which was an oxidant to prepare Al@NiO nanothermite by ultrasonic mixing. The thermal properties , combustion performance of Al@NiO were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and high-speed camera, and compared with Al/NiO nanothermite prepared by using commercially purchased Al and NiO as raw materials. Compared with Al/NiO, the heat release of Al@NiO increased by 268J/g, the activation energy decreased by 88 kJ/mol, and the combustion flame was brighter, the combustion time was shorter, and the energy release was faster. It was also found that stoichiometric ratio has significant effects on the energy output of nanothermite, and the fuel-rich formula has more prominent energy characteristics. The alcohol-thermal synthesis method adopted in this paper is also expected to be applied to other nanothermite systems.

Metal organic complexes are regarded as a series of promising combustion catalysts for solid rocket propellants. Their effects on the combustion performance of propellants are closely related to the reaction mechanism. Here, the metal–organic complex Cu(Salen) was investigated as a candidate material for the combustion catalyst of the HMX-added composite modified double-base propellant (HMX-CMDB). The combustion performance of the propellant was found to be evidently enhanced in the presence of Cu(Salen) compared with the propellant samples containing Benzoic-Cu or without catalyst. The addition of Cu(Salen) can improve the burning rate and combustion efficiency of the propellant – and greatly reduce the burning rate pressure index. Analysis shows that the addition of Cu(Salen) can increase the combustion area, flame brightness and combustion surface uniformity of the propellant to a higher degree. The sample can spray more beams of bright filaments on the flat combustion section, and the amount of gas generated by decomposition also greatly increases. In addition, Cu(Salen) shows amazing advantages in improving the surface of the propellant and the temperature gradient of the combustion flame.

Ammonium perchlorate-based molecular perovskites (DAP-4) have garnered immense interest due to their exceptional burst performance and good thermal stability. Similarly, metallic hydrides are widely acknowledged as an exceedingly promising material class for implementation in energetic systems, given their exceptional hydrogen storage density. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the impact of hydrogen storage material MgH 2 on the thermal decomposition and combustion characteristics of molecular perovskite materials ((H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ],DAP-4). In this study, DAP-4/MgH 2 composites were synthesized and characterized for their morphology, structure, elemental distribution, thermal decomposition properties, and combustion properties. The findings indicated that the inclusion of MgH 2 reduce the thermal decomposition temperature of DAP-4. Moreover, when MgH 2 was added at a mass ratio of 5 wt %, the apparent activation energy ( E a ) decreased to 212.0 kJ/mol, while the peak combustion pressure and boosting rate increased with more intense flames. A plausible thermal decomposition and combustion mechanism of DAP-4/MgH 2 composites was postulated. This study enhances our understanding of the thermal decomposition and combustion properties of DAP-4 and magnesium hydride in energy-containing systems.

Boron has a promising application in the field of propellants due to its high calorific value. However, the difficulty of ignition and the poor combustion efficiency of boron (B) have severely limited its efficient application. In response to this issue, this paper proposes to improve the ignition and combustion performance of micron-sized boron by the Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) coating. The effect of PVDF content on the B combustion performance was systematically studied using a Thermogravimetry-Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG-DSC), a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), an X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), a laser Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), and a high-speed camera. The results show that PVDF can significantly reduce the initial oxidation temperature of B powder and increase its reaction heat. When the PVDF content is 23wt%, the reaction heat and the combustion intensity of B powder reach the maximum and are significantly higher than those of the uncoated B powder. Moreover, the fluorination reaction that occurs during the combustion process not only can effectively shorten the combustion time of B powder, but also has a positive effect on its flame intensity and propagation speed, and it significantly reduces B particle agglomeration, which improves the combustion efficiency significantly. This study lays the foundation for the application of PVDF modified B in B-based solid propellants.

Aluminum (Al)-lithium (Li) alloys are ambitious candidates for application in energetic materials, however, the high reactivity of Al-Li compound and Li in alloys affects their thermal stability, which results in gradually lower active content and diminished performance, impeding their further application in energetics. In this study, the specific content of silicon (Si) was introduced into Al-Li alloy via the centrifugal atomization that allows in-situ assembly of Al , Li, and Si at the single particle level, thus resulting in more stable Al-Li-Si compounds instead of active Al-Li compounds and Li and enhancing their thermal stability. The results show that Al-Li-Si alloy powders are in a high degree of sphericity, which are composed of αAl and AlLiSi. Compared to Al-Li alloys, Al-Li-Si alloys initiate the oxidization at a higher temperature (∼600 ℃) since the existence of more stable Al-Li-Si compounds than Li in Al-Li alloys, which indicates a higher thermal stability. Al-Li-Si alloys also show high heat release and combustion efficiency similar to Al-Li alloys. In the meanwhile, Al-Li-Si alloy-based composites maintain almost the same combustion properties compared to Al-Li/PTFE energetics, along with prolonged combustion duration. Therefore, Al-Li-Si alloy powders are promising candidates for application in energetic materials considering their higher thermal stability and tunable combustion properties.

To understand the thermal decomposition and combustion characteristics of HMX/aluminum (Al) composites, this study prepared the HMX/Al composites with different Al contents and carried out the thermal decomposition and combustion performance tests of these composites. The thermal analysis results showed that the activation energy of the HMX/Al composites increased from 483.94 kJ·mol −1 to 541.60 kJ·mol −1 when the Al content increased from 0 to 30 wt%. However, the change in the Al content had little effect on the heat flow of the HMX/Al composites. The combustion results showed that the calorific value of HMX/Al-30 composite reached 16,860 J·g −1 . The flame height and burning intensity gradually increased with an increase in the Al content, and the burning duration of HMX/Al-10, HMX/Al-20, and HMX/Al-30 gradually decreased by 0.21, 0.57 ms and 0.91 ms, respectively. The results showed that Al powder as metal fuel can control the combustion reactions and energy output of HMX-based explosives.

In this study, fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) was prepared from dialcohol-terminated perfluoropolyether as a soft segment; isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a curing agent; 1,2,4-butanetriol (BT) as a crosslinker; and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as a chain extender. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and1H NMR were used to characterize the structure of the FPU. The mechanical properties of the FPUs with different BDO and BT contents were also measured. The tensile strength and breaking elongation of the optimized FPU formula were 3.7 MPa and 412%, respectively. To find out the action mechanism of FPU on Al, FPU/Al was prepared by adding Al directly to FPU. The thermal decomposition of the FPU and FPU/Al was studied and compared by simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (DSC-TG-MS). It was found that FPU can enhance the oxidation of Al by altering the oxide-shell properties. The combustion performance of the FPU propellant, compared with the corresponding hydroxyl-terminated polyether (HTPE)-based polyurethane (HPU) propellant, was recorded by a high-speed video camera. The FPU propellants were found to produce smaller agglomerates due to the generation of AlF3in the combustion process. These findings show that FPU may be a useful binder for tuning the agglomeration and reducing two-phase flow losses of aluminized propellants.

Aluminum-lithium alloys (Al-Li alloys) have gained prominence in recent years as promising alternatives to aluminum powders, attributed to their superior thermal and combustion characteristics. However, the high reactivity of Al-Li alloys poses significant challenges to their stability and compatibility with other materials. This study utilized high-energy ball milling to modify Al-Li alloys by incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and paraffin wax (WAX) as functional coatings. Thermal analysis of Al-Li/PTFE composites revealed a marked reduction in the thermal oxidative exothermic peak temperature with the addition of 10 % and 15 % PTFE, accompanied by enthalpy increases of 1.49 and 2.1 times, respectively. Combustion processes captured using a high-speed camera demonstrated that increasing the PTFE content from 10 % to 30 % intensified the combustion and reduced combustion duration by 50 %. The agglomeration of combustion residues also decreased. Furthermore, incorporating WAX through ball milling facilitated high-temperature phase transformations, producing Al-Li/10PTFE/2WAX composite powders with enhanced antioxidant properties, as evidenced by a contact angle of 131.15°, and improved compatibility. The findings offer a pathway for achieving tunable combustion performance in Al-Li alloys while addressing critical issues related to the storage and processing of these powders for practical applications.

Boron (B) powder is considered to be an excellent fuel for propulsion applications due to its remarkable energy density. However, B is severely affected by boron oxide (B 2 O 3 ) on its surface. To solve this problem, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and copper oxide (CuO) coatings were applied onto B particles, leveraging their synergistic effects to enhance the ignition and combustion performance (ICP) of B. Various characterization methods and CO 2 laser ignition experiments were used to determine how PVDF and CuO impact B combustion. PVDF and CuO are helpful to improve the ICP of B. Especially for the (B/CuO 4 )@PVDF 16 sample, it exhibits 28.2% higher combustion heat, 46.4% shorter ignition delay, and flame expansion rate (FER) increases from 0.091 to 0.280 m s −1 versus unmodified B. Furthermore, PVDF suppresses B powder agglomeration during combustion. The present work provides a new idea for improving the combustion of B powder. Graphical abstract

The microwave ignition holds potential in the ignition of weapons due to its simple structure, non-contact property, and simultaneous ignitions of large area. However, the long ignition delay time of the current ignition agents cannot meet the microwave weaponry advancements. To address the issues, a microwave sensitive oxide-CuFe 2 O 4 (CUFO) which was firstly discovered to be easily ignited by microwaves compared many ferrites, was coupled with Ti nanoparticles (n-Ti) to form Ti/CUFO microwave ignition agents by electrostatic spray granulation. The characterization of microwave ignition, volumetric combustion, burning rate and DSC were used to determine its ignition delay time and the energy release properties. It indicates that the microwave sensitivity, maximum peak pressure and pressure pressurization rate of Ti/CUFO first increases and then decreases with the promoting content of n-Ti. The Ti/CUFO at Φ = 3.5 exhibits the lowest ignition delay time by 79.24 ms compared to the 98.7 ms of n-Ti, meanwhile, its maximum peak pressure and pressurization rate reach the highest by 338.54 kPa and 8.57 kPa/ms, respectively. The DSC results indicate that Ti/CUFO exhibits much lower reaction peak temperature by 320–335 °C compared to 488 °C of n-Ti, which suggests Ti-CUFO reaction maybe much easier be activated. The dielectric loss of n-Ti and CUFO under strong electric field transfer the energy of microwaves to heat, reaching to its reaction temperature. The XPS and XRD results of CUFO after microwave radiation disclosing the crystal transition, formation of divalent iron and oxygen vacancies , as well as the released bright light under microwave radiation , suggest the thermal breakdown mechanism of CUFO. When Ti/CUFO exposes into microwaves, CUFO generates oxygen vacancies due to heat loss and n-Ti is dielectric heated, followed by the generated oxygen reacting with n-Ti, improving the combustion performance of n-Ti. This result provides new insight for the designing of microwave ignition.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a common fluorine-containing compound that can effectively reduce the aggregation of aluminum (Al) powder. However, the Al@PVDF system suffers from low energy density and low combustion intensity. To address these issues, it was modified with PVDF and titanium carbide (TiC) by using an anti-solvent method. The effects of different proportions of PVDF and TiC on the combustion properties of Al powder were studied. There is a synergistic effect between TiC and PVDF in improving the combustion performance of Al powder. Replacing a small amount of PVDF in Al@PVDF with TiC can not only reduce its ignition delay and agglomeration size, but also enhance the combustion performance because TiC predominates in reacting with Al 2 O 3 , which reduces the PVDF consumption and improves the reaction between PVDF and Al.
