In this study, magnetic CoMoO 4 /CoFe 2 O 4 (CMO/CFO) nanospheres with a core-shell structure were synthesized via two-step hydrothermal methods . The obtained particles were employed as catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degrade methylene blue (MB). The physico-chemical characterizations of the synthesized CMO/CFO showed that the CMO shell contributed to the enhancement of redox conversion and the increase in the concentration of oxygen vacancies (OVs). By examining reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the CMO/CFO/PMS system, the MB degradation was dominated by a non-radical pathway, and 1 O 2 was identified as the most abundant ROS. Besides, the CMO/CFO exhibited faster reaction kinetics than the pristine CFO. Moreover, the magnetic properties guaranteed the recycling and reuse of CMO/CFO, and the removal rate of MB was maintained at ∼94% after continuous use five times. Both the tolerance to SO 4 2− and the wide pH range where the material is applicable make it a promising catalyst for dyeing wastewater treatment .

We report the synthesis and electrocatalytic properties of a CoMoO 4 -CoP heterostructure anchored on a hollow polyhedral N -doped carbon skeleton (CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC) for water-splitting applications. The preparation involved the anion exchange of MoO 4 2- to the organic ligand of ZIF-67, the self-hydrolysis of MoO 4 2- , and NaH 2 PO 2 phosphating annealing. CoMoO 4 was found to enhance thermal stability and prevent active site agglomeration during annealing, while the hollow structure of CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC provided a large specific surface area and high porosity that facilitated mass transport and charge transfer. The interfacial electron transfer from Co to Mo and P sites promoted the generation of electron-deficient Co sites and electron-enriched P sites, which accelerated water dissociation. CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH solution, with overpotentials of 122 mV and 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. The CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC‖CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC two-electrode system only required an overall water splitting (OWS) cell voltage of 1.62 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline electrolytic cell. In addition, the material showed comparable activity to 20% Pt/C‖RuO 2 in a pure water home-made membrane electrode device, demonstrating potential for practical applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Our results suggest that CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC is a promising electrocatalyst for efficient and cost-effective water splitting.

The global energy transition driving an urgent need for sustainable renewable energy technologies. Hydrogen’s role as a clean, high-efficiency energy vector stems from its ability to store large amounts of energy without generating carbon emissions, relies on water electrolysis technology for its efficient production. However, commercial noble metal catalysts (IrO 2 and RuO 2 ) have drawbacks such as high cost and poor stability, limiting their large-scale application. To address this, this study developed a hierarchical CoMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH heterostructure catalyst aimed at simultaneously optimizing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance to achieve efficient overall water splitting. A core–shell structure was constructed through a dual-stage synthesis procedure (hydrothermal growth of CoMoO 4 nanorod arrays followed by electrodeposition of CoFe-LDH nanosheets). In situ analysis revealed that Mo species dissolution during the OER process induces surface reconstruction, generating highly active Co(Fe)OOH species, significantly lowering the reaction energy barrier. Experimental results showed that the catalyst exhibited outstanding OER activity and HER activity. Additionally, the catalyst exhibits outstanding stability (OER continuous operation for 50 h without degradation) and achieves efficient Overall Water Splitting Performance (starting voltage 1.52 V at 10 mA/cm 2 ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm the optimized electronic structure at the heterointerface.

There is an urgent need to design effective and affordable noble metal-free oxygen evolution electrocatalysts for the realization of hydrogen production technology through overall water splitting. In this work, we synthesized CoMoO 4 /Fe-MOF composite catalysts on nickel foam by solvothermal method and explored them as electrodes towards oxygen evolution reaction. At 10 mA cm −2 , CoMoO 4 /Fe-MOF demonstrated a small overpotential of 238 mV, with a relatively small Tafel slope of 49.22 mV dec -1 and exhibited excellent stability after 30 h of testing. The enhanced OER activity and good durability of CoMoO 4 /Fe-MOF could be attributed to the self-supported growth of Fe-MOF nanosheets as well as the tight binding to the rod-like CoMoO 4 . The coupling of CoMoO 4 with Fe-MOF established a rich boundary, thus improving conductivity, increasing specific surface area and exposing more active sites. These results suggested that the combination of MOFs with binary transition metal oxides provided an effective route to develop robust and efficient electrocatalysts.

Design and synthesis of a highly efficient OER catalyst is the key to improve the efficiency of hydroelectrolysis for hydrogen production. In this paper, a rational approach to improve the catalytic performance of CoMoO4 nanomaterial was reported. A nanoflower structured CoMoO4 precursor was synthesized on nickel foam using a typical hydrothermal method. Then, CoMoO4/NF was etched through brief immersion in iron nitrate solution at room temperature to produce FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF. The unique 3D structure of FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF could availably promote interfacial electron transfer as well as effectively provide abundant active sites, and it exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity. FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF requires an overpotential of 209 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Meanwhile, the material FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF exhibits excellent catalytic durability of up to 24 h, which is promising for practical applications in energy conversion. Thus, this work may offer a viable strategy to assemble remarkable OER electrocatalysts.

CoMoO4 has gained great attention as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity of 980 mAh g–1 and relatively high electrochemical activity. Unfortunately, CoMoO4 anode also has some drawbacks such as low electronic/ionic conductivity, inferior cyclic stability, and relative severe volumetric expansion during the lithiation/delithiation process, greatly inhibiting its further development and application. Herein, we report Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C nanosheet composite constructed via a novel and facile one-stone-three-birds strategy. The preparation of the Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C nanosheet is based on the following two-step process: the formation of Co/Zn nanosheet precursors derived from Co/Zn-ZIF rhombic dodecahedra via solvothermal pretreatment, followed by a calcination treatment with molybdic acid (H2MoO4) in air. The as-prepared Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C is monoclinic crystal structured composite with the in situ formed active carbon, which is well-defined nanosheet with a rough surface and mean thickness of 60–70 nm for a single sheet. This Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C nanosheet composite possesses a larger surface area of 37.60 m2 g–1, showing a mesoporous structure. When used as anode materials, the as-obtained Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C composite can deliver as high as a discharge capacity of 1337 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles at 0.2C and still retain the capacity of 827 mAh g–1 even after 600 cycles at 1C, exhibiting outstanding lithium storage performances. The higher capacity and superior cyclic stability of the Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C composite should be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the substitution of Zn2+, in situ composited active carbon and the as-constructed unique microstructure for the Co0.8Zn0.2MoO4/C composite. Our present work provides a facile one-stone-three-birds strategy to effectively construct the architectures and significantly enhance electrochemical performances for other transition metal electrode materials.

MnO 2 /CoMoO 4 / NF (Nickel foam) was obtained by loading MnO 2 onto the surface of CoMoO 4 /NF using electrodeposition. The results of degradation experiments showed that the degradation efficiency of levofloxacin (LVF) (15 ppm, pH = 6.12) over MnO 2 /CoMoO 4 //NF reached 80.4% in 30 min when the PMS concentration was 0.08 mM. When the pH was lower or higher than the pH value of the original solution, the performance of the material significantly decreased due to the repulsive effect between the catalyst and SO 5 2− . Cobalt and manganese ions exhibited a synergistic effect on the activation of PMS. The HCO 3 − ions showed the most significant inhibitory effect on the degradation of LVF. The free radical trapping experiments indicated that ·OH, and O 2 · − were the main active species in the degradation process of levofloxacin. The cyclic stability experiments proved the MnO 2 /CoMoO 4 /NF catalysts were efficient, stable and easy to recover. Graphical

Binary transition metal oxides (BTMOs) stand out as a focal point due to their distinctive electrochemical properties. However, they encounter challenges like low conductivity and limited active sites. To tackle these obstacles, we have meticulously designed a CoMoO 4 -NiMoO 4 (CMNM) heterostructure featuring significant compressive-tensile strain. This design facilitates the robust integration of CoMoO 4 (CM) and NiMoO 4 (NM), initiating interfacial polarization, and establishing a built-in electric field (BIEF) that significantly enhances electron transfer between the phases. Moreover, the strain serves as a driving force for the electric field, promoting the rearrangement of interface electrons and further boosting interfacial polarization. This avant-garde approach propels the CMNM electrode to achieve a remarkable specific capacity of 530.45 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 , maintaining 327 C g −1 even at 10 A g −1 , thus showcasing a superior rate capability. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor employing CMNM as the positive and FeOOH as the negative achieves a high energy density of 78.9 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 927.02 W kg −1 . Our methodology, leveraging heterostructures coupled with the interfacial strain tactics, paves a novel avenue for high-performance supercapacitors.

The application of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is largely limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which usually requires noble metal Ir/Ru-based catalysts. It’s desirable to design low-cost catalysts with less content of Ir/Ru in OER without sacrificing their catalytic performance. Herein, the ultrasmall IrO 2 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 nanocages (IrO 2 @Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 ) electrocatalyst is demonstrated. Structural characterization indicates that hollow Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 acts as the effective support to provide abundant anchoring sites and heterogenous interfaces, which enable the catalyst to expose more active sites and accelerate charge transport. As a result, the representative IrO 2 @Co 3 O 4 -CoMoO 4 exhibits an outstanding OER activity ( η = 236 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) with a superior mass activity of 713 A g –1 Ir at 1.53 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 that are comparable to most reported catalysts. Theoretical calculations also reveal that the introduction of Mo can effectively modify electronic structure and decrease adsorption energy barriers of oxygen intermediates, and thereby enhancing OER catalytic activity. This work provides a new idea to develop highly efficient low Ir catalysts for OER.

Designing an affordable catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media remains a major challenge. In this study, we synthesized a Ru-CoMoO4–x/NF catalyst modified with ruthenium nanoclusters (Ru NCs) and oxygen vacancies (Ovs), using nickel foam (NF) as the substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that introducing Ru nanoclusters effectively modified the catalyst’s electronic structure. A carefully controlled concentration of oxygen vacancies enhanced the catalyst’s stability, reduced electrochemical impedance, and promoted hydrogen evolution kinetics, thereby improving the intrinsic activity of Ru-CoMoO4–x/NF. In an alkaline freshwater medium, Ru-CoMoO4–x/NF displayed a low overpotential of 20 mV to achieve a current density of −10 mA cm–2, with a Tafel slope of 41.54 mV dec–1. The catalyst maintained stable performance with minimal degradation after 100 h in constant voltage tests and 180 h in multistep constant current tests. Moreover, in an overall water-splitting system, Ru-CoMoO4–x/NF∥Ru-CoMoO4–x/NF required only 1.606 V to drive −50 mA cm–2. This work presents a viable approach to enhancing the HER electrocatalytic performance of nonprecious metal oxides through the synergistic effects of Ru NCs and Ovs.

The advancement of stable and highly efficient non-noble metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts represents a formidable challenge in the realm of overall water splitting technology. In this study, CoMoO 4 ||CoMoP-based nanocolumn arrays were designed and synthesized using Co-doped molybdophoxide polyoxometalate (PMo), which is grown in situ on nickel foam (NF). Co doping is employed to conduct appropriate electronic modulation of Mo, thereby enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. When used in oxygen evolution reaction (OER), surface reconstruction is induced by electrochemical activation, in which the stable structure of PMo serves to balance the newly formed active OER amorphous metal hydroxy-oxide (hydroxide) compounds. The sample exhibits a HER overpotential of 96 mV and an OER overpotential of 234 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 . When utilizing CoMoO 4 ||CoMoP-based catalyst as both the cathode and anode assembly, the overall water splitting system can provide a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 at a driving voltage of merely 1.509 V, and can achieve long-term stability over 100 h, outperforming most previously reported bifunctional electrocatalysts. This work offers a promising approach for constructing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Electrocatalytic reduction is a promising method to remove NO 2 − ; not only can it deal with environmental issues, but it can also recycle NO 2 − to form NH 3 . This study involved the preparation of oxygen vacancies-rich monoclinic cobalt molybdate nanosheets on nickel foam (CoMoO 4 /NF) employing a hybrid approach of hydrothermal and calcination reduction techniques renders highly effective catalysts for electroreduction of nitrite (NO 2 − RR). The presence of oxygen vacancies increases carrier density, enhancing electrical conductivity, reducing resistance, and accelerating electron transfer. Additionally, it serves as an active site for absorbing NO 2 − . In an aqueous solution containing 0.5 M Na 2 SO 4 and 0.1 M NO 2 − , the Faraday efficiency (FE) of CoMoO 4 /NF reaches an impressive 98.6 ± 0.02 % at −0.8 V vs. RHE, and NH 3 yield demonstrates a commendable performance, attaining 32.72 ± 0.17 mg h −1 cm −2 . Meanwhile, it exhibits robust and enduring characteristics throughout the stability tests. Employing CoMoO 4 /NF as the cathode, the Zn−NO 2 − battery demonstrates a peak power density of 5.94 mW cm −2 alongside an NH 3 yield of 3.88 mg h −1 cm −2 and an FE of 91.88 %. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations uncover the significant influence of oxygen vacancies on enhancing nitrite adsorption and activation over the CoMoO 4 surface and bring to light possible reaction pathways.
