Epitaxial Growth of Cs3Cu2I5 Single-Crystal Arrays for UV-Responsive Neuromorphic Devices

Yang Yu,Zhonglong Zhang,Qiuchun Lu,Jiaqi Tang,Wenqiang Wu,Xun Han

Copper-based halides, a type of perovskite derivative, inherit their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability and also have the advantages of being nontoxic and stable. Despite the tremendous achievements of microfabrication in conventional halide perovskites, reports on copper-based halide array devices are rare due to their difficult high-quality crystallization. Here, by introducing single-crystal thin films grown by space confinement method as substrates, reliable photolithography based on their single crystals is successfully achieved and controllable homoepitaxial single-crystal arrays is demonstrated. By adjusting the substrate, angle, and growth time, the orientation, arrangement, and size of arrays could be controlled. Temperature and time are used to regulate the growth stage to obtain clean and appropriately sized arrays. ITO/Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /ITO neuromorphic device based on homoepitaxial arrays is developed. The variation of synaptic plasticity could be controlled by the number and frequency of light pulses. The device successfully simulated the process of “learning, forgetting, and relearning” in the human brain, demonstrating the potential of application in sensing-storage-computing-integrated devices.

Smart SO2 Sensor Based on Cs3Cu2I5@Fe2O3 Nanocrystals for Eliminating Humidity Interference

Yuyan Zhuang,Jintuo Zhu,Danhong Gao,Shasha Gao,Zijiang Yang,Sheng Huang,Xinjian He

Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with strong pungent odor, and prolonged inhalation can damage the respiratory system and heart. Precise measurement of sulfur dioxide is very important for the human health. While the current sulfur dioxide sensor works at a high temperature and is easily interfered by humidity. Therefore, in this work, we used a solution method to coat perovskite nanocrystals Cs3Cu2I5 with metal oxides Fe2O3 and obtained the room-temperature sulfur dioxide gas-sensitive materials Cs3Cu2I5@Fe2O3 nanocrystals. Meanwhile, combined with machine learning, the sensor has the ability of self-calibrating under different humidity environment, realizing the high precision and anti-interference measurement of sulfur dioxide. In addition, in this structure, the coating Fe2O3 not only helps to improve water stability but also transfers the interaction of sulfur dioxide to the inner Cs3Cu2I5 and lowers the gas-sensitive temperature to room temperature. The response/recovery time of the sulfur dioxide sensor based on Cs3Cu2I5@Fe2O3 is 31/816 s, and the sensitivity is 0.19 at 10 ppm. Then, intelligent classification algorithm was used for recognition, and the accurate recognition rate was up to 95.0%. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was implemented to reveal the gas-sensitive mechanism that sulfur dioxide was adsorbed by Cs3Cu2I5@Fe2O3 nanocrystals, the good response was attributed to the band structure changes significantly, and the hybridization of electron orbitals was appeared between gas and nanocrystals. We believe that the sensor will have potential in sulfur dioxide, and the idea of using machine learning to intelligent eliminate humidity interference can also be extended to other gas sensor.

Kinetics-Controlled Interfacial Synthesis of Janus and Patchy Heterostructures Based on Perovskite Nanocrystals

Shuhua Chen,Xinnan Mao,Qixuan Zhong,Qi Pan,Jun Liu,Jie Fu,Di Yang,Jinxing Chen,Lu Wang,Qiao Zhang,Muhan Cao

Heterostructures integrated by diverse material featuring nanocrystals (NCs) tunable properties and functions are of great interest. However, to rationally design and precisely control the heterostructures in multiple shapes still remains a tremendous challenge. In this work, the nucleation of SiO 2 nanoparticles is manipulated via a kinetics-controlled water–hexane interfacial reaction system to construct Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /SiO 2 heterostructures, which can be well controlled in Janus and patchy morphology. In this interfacial reaction, the evolution of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs and the intrinsic formation mechanism of the heterostructures are investigated. It is observed that the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs on the interface undergo a morphology transformation driven by ligand loss and exposed facets evolution. Increased wettability between Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and SiO 2 favors the formation of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /SiO 2 heterostructures. The key to this strategy is to break the rule of thermodynamic domination in reaction by kinetics manipulation when constructing the patchy heterostructure. To be noted, an increased stability is conferred on the resultant heterostructure product compared to naked perovskite NCs. This work enables to better control the complicated heterostructure configurations and understand their formation mechanism.

Efficient Blue-Emitting Rb+-doped Cs3Cu2I5 via Solvent Evaporation Crystallization for White LEDs

Xuanming Zhang,Ronggan Lu,Xiaochen Fang,Chenfeng Lin,Yongfeng Liu,Yanqiao Ding,Dongdong Yan,Xiaoyu Wang,Hao Xie,Cheng Wang,Weixiang Ye

The unique combination of strong excitonic properties and environmental stability in 0D copper halide crystals motivates the development of scalable ambient fabrication routes for high-quality emitters. Here, we report a low-temperature solvent vapor-assisted crystallization strategy to grow millimeter-sized Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals. Rb + doping effectively passivates surface defects, markedly enhancing moisture and ambient stability, with the photoluminescence intensity remaining nearly unchanged after 60 days in air. Notably, the 10% Rb + -doped crystals achieve a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 98.42%, demonstrating a pronounced emission enhancement. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations reveal that both pristine and 10% Rb + -doped structures reside in a similar energy window (−108 to −110 eV), while the doped system exhibits a more confined trajectory, suggesting a flattened energy landscape and suppressed defect formation. Doped lattice relaxations induce slight, direction-dependent bond contraction, improving coordination integrity without major distortion, consistent with material stability and device reliability. By integrating blue-emitting Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 :10% Rb + with green Cs 3 Cu 2 Cl 5 and red CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ , we fabricate high-performance white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) achieving CRI of 95.36, CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.30, 0.34), and outstanding luminance of 17734.5 cd/m 2 . These findings establish a versatile ambient pathway for defect-engineered Cs 3 Cu 2 X 5 (X = I, Cl) emitters, advancing their prospects for next-generation solid-state lighting technologies.

Using a Novel Melt-Cooling Crystallization Method to Prepare High-Quality Cs3Cu2I5 X-ray Scintillators

Rui Liu,Zhiyong Liu,Chengxu Lin,Chenyu Li,Shuang Xi,Xingyue Liu,Guanglan Liao,Tielin Shi

Copper halide, as a highly attractive and promising type of scintillator, has attracted a great deal of attention in the field of X-ray imaging. However, controllable preparation of copper-based halide perovskite films with uniformity, large size, high radiation stability, and excellent scintillation performance remains a major challenge. Herein, we propose a melt-cooling crystallization method to prepare high-quality Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite powder blocks with uniform size in batches, grind the perovskite powder blocks into uniformly fine particles, and mix them with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain large-area, highly stable, and excellent-scintillation-performance perovskite scintillator films. The Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator film exhibits a large Stokes shift (141 nm) and a photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 92.1%, effectively ensuring the decoupling efficiency of light. Moreover, the large-area scintillator film (20 × 16 cm2) obtains a low detection limit (40.29 nGy/s) and a spatial resolution up to 11.7 lp/mm. Meanwhile, the Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator film has excellent flexibility and can maintain its original appearance even after more than 1000 continuous stretching and bending cycles. Finally, high-quality X-ray imaging of different objects by scintillators is demonstrated. These results highlight the application prospects of Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator films in low-cost, high-performance, large-area, and flexible imaging.

Liquid nitrogen quenching boosts emission and stability of Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite nanocrystals toward multifunctional optoelectronic applications

Duna Su,Jingsheng Ma,Chuanli Wu,Xiaobo Hu,Wan Jiang,Lianjun Wang,Xiuxun Han

Lead-free Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications owing to their non-toxicity and intrinsic blue emission. However, their practical application is hindered by defect-dominated low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and poor environmental stability. Herein, we propose an ultrafast liquid‑nitrogen (LN) quenching strategy integrated with one‑pot synthesis, which delivers an ultra‑high cooling rate of 35 K/s faster than conventional ice‑water (IW) cooling (1 K/s). This abrupt thermal termination effectively suppresses Ostwald ripening, ion migration and surface ligand detachment, thereby promoting uniform size distribution, inducing lattice contraction and reducing the non-radiative defects. The obtained Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs exhibit a remarkable PLQY up to 85% and exceptional stability, maintaining beyond 80% of initial PL intensity after ambient storage for 35 days, aqueous exposure for 36 h and continuous UV irradiation for 48 h. Moreover, the LN-quenched NCs were successfully integrated into X-ray scintillator film achieving a spatial resolution of 10 lp/mm, and their colloidal ink enabled stimulus-responsive information encryption and fluorescence anti-counterfeiting patterns, attributed to enhanced self-trapped exciton (STE) emission and robust structural integrity. This work establishes ultrafast LN quenching as a universal and feasible strategy for fabricating highly luminescent and stable perovskite NCs, paving the way for multifunctional optoelectronic applications.

Phase-Controlled Crystal Growth of Cs3Cu2I5 Scintillators via the Solution Method for γ-ray Detection

Ye Xuanzhen,Fang Bin,Liu Xin,Liu Shilin,Wang Fangbao,Song Xiaoyuan,Wu Bin,Xu Wei,Huang Wei,Xu Zhichun,Geng Jiahao,Zhao Dou,Chen Liang,Xu Yadong

The zero-dimensional (0D) copper halide perovskite Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 exhibits outstanding luminescence and scintillation properties, making it a highly promising scintillator for γ-ray detection. Solution growth is a favorable and inexpensive method for growing Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystals; however, scalable growth of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals with low defect density suffers from the unavoidable formation of secondary phase CsCu 2 I 3 . In this work, centimeter-size, high quality Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystals are synthesized via a constant-temperature solvent evaporation crystallization (CT-SEC) method, in which the formation of CsCu 2 I 3 can be eliminated by precursor engineering. The phase evolution behavior is elucidated as the decrease in the I − /Cu + concentration ratio during the growth of the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystal. Through synergistic regulation of precursor antioxidative treatment and raw material stoichiometry, the long-term phase-stable growth of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystals is achieved. The obtained Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals exhibit excellent energy resolutions of 5.38% for 137 Cs and 13.30% for 241 Am γ-ray irradiation.

Jing Su,Yubin Kang,Yichen Zhu,Zhi Wen,Mingchun Li,Qiangqiang Zhu,Yue Zhai,Tengfei Wu,Le Wang

Owing to their environmental friendliness and excellent luminescent properties, lead-free copper-based halide perovskites have attracted significant attention for use in next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this work, Ga-doped Cs3Cu2I5 phosphors derived from CsCu2I3 were synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method. Ga doping effectively modulated the crystal growth behavior and electronic structure, enabling high-performance emission tuning. The optimized material exhibited high-color-purity blue emission centered at ∼446 nm, with a CIE color purity as high as 97.7%. Owing to its exceptional optical properties, a blue LED device was fabricated, exhibiting stable and high-color-purity emission, thereby highlighting its practical potential for high-resolution display technologies and solid-state lighting applications. Furthermore, the material demonstrates remarkable water-induced color-switching behavior, enabling reversible color changes upon exposure to water. This characteristic renders it a promising candidate for applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption. This study provides new insights and strategic directions for the development of copper-based perovskites aimed at achieving high-color-purity blue emission and multifunctional intelligent material applications.

Solution-processed lead-free bulk 0D Cs3Cu2I5 single crystal for indirect gamma-ray spectroscopy application

Qiang Xu,Juan Wang,Qindong Zhang,Xiao Ouyang,Xiao Ouyang,Maheng Ye,Weiting Xie,Xuewen Yan,Deyuan Li,Xiaoping Ouyang,Xiaoping Ouyang,Xiaoping Ouyang,Xiaobing Tang,Xiaodong Zhang

Bulk scintillators that are with high density, low cost, and fine pulse-height energy spectral resolution, and are non-hygroscopic and user friendly, are desired for high-energy gamma-ray spectroscopy application. Recently, low-cost solution-processed perovskite nanoscintillators have been demonstrated with outstanding performances for indirect low-energy X-ray detection; however, the stability and thickness are not suitable for high-energy gamma-ray detection. Here, we report scintillation performances of a low-cost solution-processed bulk 0D Cs3Cu2I5 single crystal. The self-trapped exciton emission results in a large Stokes shift (109 nm) that is reabsorption free. A broad X-ray excited emission matches well with the sensitivity of a silicon photodiode. The unique Cs+ surrounded isolated [Cu2I5]3− cluster scintillator provides ultra-stability in air and strong radiation hardness under high-dose gamma-ray exposure from a 60Co source. This solution-processed Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator is expected with low-cost and has detection performances comparable to commercial alkali-halide scintillator products.

Leveraging convolutional neural networks for enhancing performance of Cs3Cu2I5/TiO2 nanocrystal-based carbon monoxide gas sensor

Xinjian He,Yuyan Zhuang,Danhong Gao,Hongwei Liu,Jintuo Zhu,Sheng Huang

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause irreversible effects on the brain if inhaled in excess. Accurate measurement of carbon monoxide is very important for human health. The current carbon monoxide sensors work with long response time and narrow detection range. Therefore, in this work, TiO 2 was coated on perovskite nanocrystals Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 by solution method to obtain high performance carbon monoxide gas sensitive material Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /TiO 2 nanocrystals. Moreover, high precision and anti-interference measurement of carbon monoxide was realized by combining with machine learning. The carbon monoxide sensor based on Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /TiO 2 has a short response/recovery time of 3.8/17.5 s and a sensitivity of 0.36 at 10 ppm. Then, an intelligent classification algorithm is used to quickly identify the concentration of carbon monoxide gas, and the recognition accuracy is as high as 99.5 %, which is higher than that of traditional sensitivity determination of gas concentration methods, due to the fact that machine learning involves multiple features of the electrical response curve, rather than the single feature of traditional sensitivity determination methods. Finally, the sensor was integrated into the self-rescuer for coal mine to realize the intelligent opening in the presence of CO, and improved the rescue efficiency. We believe that this sensor will be promising in the field of carbon monoxide, and the idea of using machine learning to intelligently recognize gas concentrations can be extended to other gas sensors.

Alkyl-chain engineering of bifunctional amino acids in optoelectronically superior lead-free copper-based perovskite Cs3Cu2I5

Jiansen Wen,Ping Li,Linqin Jiang,Baisheng Sa,Hao Xiong,Lingyan Lin,Xiaokun Huang,Aijun Yang,Yu Qiu

Lead-free Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite, featuring a low-dimensional structure and self-trapped exciton emission, presents significant promise for sustainable optoelectronics. Although mechanical ball milling has the advantage of being environmentally friendly and scalable, the optoelectronic performance of synthesized Cs3Cu2I5 is often constrained by lattice distortion, surface defects, and particle agglomeration induced during milling. To overcome these challenges, an alkyl-chain-engineered passivation strategy derived from amino acids was proposed through a combined theoretical calculation and experimental validation approach. Density functional theory reveals that the multifunctional amino acid and alkyl chain synergistically passivate both the coordination-deficient Cu+ ions and iodine vacancies prone to deep-level defects on the Cs3Cu2I5 surface. Interestingly, the extended alkyl chain significantly enhances the modification effect. Subsequent experiments and calculations further confirmed that longer alkyl chains effectively enhance photoluminescence, prolong carrier lifetime, suppress aggregation, and improve grain compactness by interacting with multiple functional groups through hydrogen-bond networks, steric hindrance, and internal electric fields. It is worth highlighting that 5-AVA-modified Cs3Cu2I5 achieved a remarkable PLQY of 75.6% (a 56.8% enhancement), prolonged carrier lifetime by 12.6%, and significantly enhanced UV-region photoresponse. Furthermore, the photodetector fabricated with this molecularly engineered green perovskite exhibits a nearly fourfold and 171% improvement in PDRC and switching ratio, respectively. This theory-guided, alkyl-chain-engineered molecularly synergistic multi-functional-group passivation strategy establishes a robust framework for green synthesis of optoelectronically superior, eco-friendly lead-free copper-based perovskites.

A highly efficient Na-doped Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator for γ-ray detection and flexible X-ray imaging

Yanyan Lei,Lingyan Xu,Yanze Wang,Lixiang Lian,Chongqi Liu,Yingming Wang,Lu Liang,Zhentao Qin,Shuai Han,Wei Zheng,Qinzeng Hu,Xiaowang Liu,Tao Wang,Wanqi Jie

As a novel lead-free perovskite derivative material, zero-dimensional Cs3Cu2I5 crystals exhibit remarkable optical properties and hold great application prospects in the field of radiation detection. To further enhance the scintillation performance and detection efficiency, we fabricated high-quality, centimeter-level Cs3Cu2I5:Na+ single crystals using a low-cost anti-solvent method. Na+ doping in the Cs3Cu2I5 lattice optimizes the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) to 95%, which can be attributed to enhanced exciton–phonon coupling and boosted self-trapped exciton fraction. Compared to the intrinsic crystal, the energy resolution and light yield of Cs3Cu2I5:5%Na+ under 137Cs γ-rays are improved by 22% and 10.5%, respectively. Under X-ray excitation, Cs3Cu2I5:5%Na+ crystals exhibit stronger RL intensity, faster response speed, lower afterglow and lower detection limit. Based on excellent X-ray detection capability, a breakthrough spatial resolution of 25.6 LP per mm@MTF = 0.2 is achieved for the Cs3Cu2I5:5%Na+@PMMA flexible film. Cs3Cu2I5:Na+ crystals boast superior optical performance, exceptional detection capabilities, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness, rendering them a highly competitive candidate for high-resolution γ-ray detection and flexible X-ray imaging.
