Iodine-125-Labeled Graphdiyne Enables Photothermal-Enhanced Radiosensitization for Synergistic Therapy of Esophageal Cancer

Jiahao Huang,Shufeng Liang,Min Zhang,Yue Zheng,Chunyan Wang,Xin Tian,Bin Yang

Purpose Iodine-125 (125I) brachytherapy delivers continuous low-dose γ-irradiation for advanced esophageal cancer, but its efficacy is constrained by intrinsic tumor radioresistance and by the risk of normal-tissue injury arising from shedding of the radionuclide from the tumor site. This study aimed to develop a multifunctional nanoplatform coupling 125I delivery with photothermal-enhanced radiosensitization for synergistic therapy. Methods A polymeric peptide-functionalized graphdiyne (GDY) nanoplatform (GDY-PEG-PTyr) was constructed by conjugating an amphiphilic PEG-PTyr copolymer (prepared by ring-opening polymerization of tyrosine N-carboxyanhydride) onto GDY nanosheets, followed by 125I labeling via chloramine-T oxidation. The nanocomposite was characterized by TEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analysis, and its photothermal behavior was evaluated under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Therapeutic efficacy and underlying mechanisms were assessed in KYSE-150 esophageal carcinoma cells and in tumor-bearing mice using cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS), γ-H2AX, live/dead, and histological assays. Results GDY-PEG-PTyr exhibited a two-dimensional sheet-like morphology, a high radiolabeling yield (~95%), and radiochemical stability above 80% over 72 h, and it reached mild hyperthermia (42–45 °C) with reproducible photothermal output over repeated heating–cooling cycles. In vitro, the combined GDY-PEG-PTyr-125I + NIR treatment reduced cell viability to 16.15%, far below that of either modality alone, while generating the strongest intracellular ROS signal, the most γ-H2AX foci, and pronounced upregulation of BAX and Caspase-3. In vivo, this combination produced near-complete tumor regression, with complete tumor elimination in three of five mice, and induced no detectable systemic toxicity. Conclusion The GDY-PEG-PTyr-125I nanoplatform integrates radionuclide brachytherapy with photothermal therapy, in which localized hyperthermia amplifies radionuclide-induced oxidative stress and DNA double-strand breaks to drive apoptosis, offering a promising nanomedicine strategy for overcoming radioresistance in esophageal cancer.

Interfacial Galvanic Engineering Enables Direct Growth of Graphdiyne-Based Slippery Coatings on Zinc Surfaces

Jiacan Tang,Jianing Wang,Tao Wang,Sheng Wang,Tao Zhang

Highly reactive zinc (Zn) surfaces are intrinsically incompatible with the surface-mediated Glaser coupling that underpins the growth of graphdiyne-based networks, which has largely confined such coatings to copper substrates. Overcoming this substrate incompatibility is therefore a critical yet unresolved step toward deploying graphdiyne-derived functional coatings on technologically important Zn-based components. Here, we develop an interfacial galvanic engineering strategy that reconstructs the Zn surface into a catalytically active and adhesion-promoting transition interface, thereby decoupling graphdiyne-like network growth from the intrinsic limitations of the substrate. Specifically, an in situ electrochemical displacement reaction spontaneously generates a nanoscale Cu-modified Zn (Cu–Zn) interface, which simultaneously provides the catalytic activity required for Glaser coupling and a robust anchoring layer for the emerging carbon framework. As a result, an ultrathin (440–677 nm), mechanically resilient nanoporous poly(1,3,5-triethynylbenzene) (PTEB) coating with strong interfacial adhesion is obtained on zinc substrates with diverse geometries. Subsequent fluorination of the PTEB framework and infusion of a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant transform the porous coating into a molecularly smooth slippery surface. The resulting fluorinated PTEB-based slippery surface exhibits an exceptionally low sliding angle (∼1.19°) and delivers outstanding corrosion protection in artificial seawater, achieving an inhibition efficiency (ηj) of up to 99.56%, while effectively suppressing protein and algal adhesion. Benefiting from the synergistic integration of the galvanically engineered interface, the chemically robust graphdiyne-like scaffold, and the stabilized lubricant layer, the coating maintains its structural integrity and functional performance under prolonged immersion and mechanical deformation. This work establishes an interfacial paradigm for overcoming substrate incompatibility in graphdiyne-based coatings and creates opportunities for long-term protection of highly reactive metal components in aggressive marine environments.

Air-Stable Hydrogen-Substituted Graphdiyne/2D Halide Perovskite Heterojunction for Self-Powered Neuromorphic Vision

Yiming Yuan,Zhipeng Xu,Deyi Zhang,Changshui Huang,Wentao Xu

Neuromorphic visual systems that mimic human vision can efficiently capture and process visual information with an in-sensor computing paradigm. However, photoelectronic devices with high light sensitivity, stability and tunable charge-carrier interactions are still required for constructing such systems. Herein, a heterojunction of two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY) and 2D (BA) 2 PbI 4 perovskite for neuromorphic photoelectric sensing and visual information processing is demonstrated. The 2D perovskite functions as a light-to-electricity conversion layer, and the 2D HsGDY forms heterojunction with the perovskite layer with well-matched energy bands to allow effective charge injection in the heterojunction at zero-voltage bias. The unique sp-sp 2 hybridization and alkyne bonds in the HsGDY thin film provide abundant charge-carrier interactive sites that enable efficient neuromorphic information processing. The device is utilized for environmentally adaptive vision and experience learning. Excitatory post-synaptic current (EPSC) gain and paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) index of the device stored in ambient air for 7 weeks retained 95% and 98% of the initial values. A device array is fabricated, applicable to perceive and process dynamic visual information. These results provide a device basis for future intelligent neuromorphic vision hardware.

Exploring graphdiyne - Dynamic characterisation of the surface oxidation mechanisms via ReaxFF-MD and experiments

Q. Chen,I.M. De Cachinho Cordeiro,W. Yang,A.C.Y. Yuen,T.B.Y. Chen,W. Wang,W. Yang,G.H. Yeoh,R.K.K. Yuen

Graphdiyne (GDY) is an emerging two-dimensional carbon allotrope comprising unique sp 1 and sp 2 hybridisation, which has attracted extensive investigation into various applications, especially as battery component materials owing to its excellent electromechanical properties. However, GDY's thermal stability and oxidation behaviour have yet to be evaluated, which is crucial to safety in high-energy applications. The present study characterised the thermophysical properties of GDY via reactive molecular dynamics (MD-ReaxFF) and experimental measurement. The oxidation kinetics and decomposition behaviour were elucidated and benchmarked with graphene (GP) and graphyne (GY) to investigate the correlation between thermal stability and morphology of carbon nanomaterials. The simulation results revealed the initial oxidation mechanism of GDY sheets, where the cleavage of C–C bonds was observed at the acetylenic chain and could be identified as the weak spots of the structural stability. As for oxidation kinetics, GDY's experimental and numerical activation energy was found to be 173.1 and 133 kJ/mol, which is lower than 220.8 kJ/mol of GP. The current work pioneer investigated the thermal stability of GDY using both experimental and numerical approaches. Meanwhile, different oxidation mechanisms between GP and GDY were distinguished and demonstrated in detail.

Enhanced photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using graphdiyne-doped TiO2 photoanode

Zhu Mengyao,Dong Yuze,Xu Jialiang,Zhang Bao,Feng Yaqing

As a novel two-dimensional material consisting of sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms, graphdiyne (GD) shows great potentials in the field of electric and material science. In particular, the performance is reported to be significantly improved for GD-involved optoelectronic devices due to its excellent electronic properties. Herein, to facilitate the charge transfer process and further improve the photo-to-electricity conversion efficiency (PCE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), for the first time we introduced GD in the TiO 2 (P25)-based photoanodes of DSSCs, resulting in GD-doped TiO 2 photoanodes. It was shown that the overall performance of the GD-doped cell is significantly enhanced due to the higher dye adsorption amount, faster electron transfer and lower recombination, compared to that of the undoped DSSC. Furthermore, the optimum GD doping amount (weight percent, wt%) was determined. Thus, the DSSC involving P25-0.6 wt% GD photoanode achieved the best PCE of 8.03%, which increased by 26.5% comparing with that of pure P25 film-based cell.

In-situ constructing 3D graphdiyne as all-carbon binder for high-performance silicon anode

Liang Li,Zicheng Zuo,Hong Shang,Fan Wang,Yuliang Li

The main issue of Si anode is the large volume variations during alloying/dealloying processes, which severely causes the disintegration in the pre-designed conductive and mechanical networks and the interfacial contact between the current collector and Si particles ; moreover, it can hardly be overcome economically. Here, the growth methodology of ultrathin graphdiyne nanosheets is scalably developed for in-situ constructing the 3D all-carbon conductive and mechanical networks and firstly enhancing the interfacial contact between current collector and Si anode via chemical bonding. Seamlessly hold by the ultrathin graphdiyne nanosheets, the disintegrations of the silicon anodes in the conductive networks and the interfacial contact are effectively retarded; as a result, the silicon electrode shows impressive enhancements in term of the capacity (2300 mA h g –1 ), and long-term stability for high-energy-density battery (1343 W h l –1 ). Such method shows great promises for realizing the commercial-level applications of Si anode.

Xiangang Zhai,Houhe Pan,Fan Wang,Xiaoya Gao,Zecheng Xiong,Liang Li,Qian Chang,Shujin Cheng,Zicheng Zuo,Yuliang Li

In this paper, the 2D all-carbon graphdiyne, which possesses superior 2D strength and high mixed conductivities for both electrons and ions, is used to protect nickel cobalt oxide nanostructures with multidimensions. The in situ grown graphdiyne seamlessly wraps on nanostructures to form 3D interpenetrating networks, leading to significant improvement in the conductivity and avoidance of the structural degradation. The assembled hybrid asymmetric supercapacitor showed a high specific capacitance of 200.9 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 with an energy density of 62.8 Wh kg–1 and a power density of 747.9 W kg–1. The device also showed a preeminent rate capability (86.4% capacitance retention, while the current density was increased from 1 to 20 A g–1) and an ultrastable long-term cycling performance (the capacitance retention is about 97.7% after 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 20 A g–1).

One-step firmly anchor graphdiyne on NiCo-LDHs as supercapacitor electrode for considerable durability

Guiquan Liu,Guorong Wang,Zhiliang Jin

Nickel-based hydrotalcite has been widely used in supercapacitor electrodes due to its multivalence. Unfortunately, the poor stability and low conductivity for charge transfer impede further development in the field of energy storage. Herein, the graphdiyne (GDY) nanosheets were added to the growth process of nickel cobalt hydrotalcite (NiCo-LDHs), which to make up for these two deficiencies of NiCo-LDHs. Due to the strong combination of NiCo-LDHs and GDY, the specific capacitance of the obtained NiCo-LDHs@GDY reaches 1284 F g −1 (1.5 times than NiCo-LDHs) under a current density of 1 A g −1 with a rate performance of 72.08 % under the current density of 20 A g −1 . In addition, the NiCo-LDHs@GDY//AC Asymmetric Supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with activated carbon demonstrates an energy density of 23.06 Wh kg −1 at a high power density of 3108.96 W kg −1 . Rejoicingly, the charge storage capacity remains at 89.53 % after 5200 charge-discharge cycles under the current density of 10 A g −1 . These outcomes show that the NiCo-LDHs@GDY electrode material has remarkable application potential and can achieve better characteristics for high-performance supercapacitors in energy storage applications .

Engineering of Graphdiyne-Based Functional Coatings for the Protection of Arbitrary Shapes of Copper Substrates

Jianing Wang,Haokai Yan,Yuxiang Zhao,Daheng Wu,Haoyong Yang,Xiaodong Yin,Runxiang Tan,Tao Zhang

Copper-based materials are very important for many application fields from marine industry to energy management and electronic devices. For most of these applications, the copper objects require long-term contact to a wet and salty environment, which leads to serious corrosion of copper. In this work, we report a thin graphdiyne layer directly grown on arbitrary shapes of copper objects at mild conditions, which could function as a protective coating for the copper substrates in artificial seawater with corrosion inhibition efficiency of ∼99.75%. To further improve the protective performance of the coating, the graphdiyne layer is fluorinated and followed by infusion with a fluorine-containing lubricant (i.e., perfluoropolyether). As a result, a slippery surface is obtained, which shows enhanced corrosion inhibition efficiency of ∼99.99% as well as excellent antibiofouling properties against microorganisms, such as protein and algae. Finally, the coatings are successfully applied in the protection of a commercial copper radiator from long-term attack of artificial seawater without disturbing its thermal conductivity. These results demonstrate the great potential of graphdiyne-based functional coatings for the protection of copper devices in aggressive environments.

Porous graphdiyne composite-based wearable triboelectric nanogenerator for energy harvesting and multifunctional self-powered sensing

Zhaolei Li,Fuchun Nan,Yu Zhou,Zhaoxu Jing,Lingyun Wang,William W. Yu

Exploring new materials is crucial for advancing wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) to fulfill the increasing demand for high performance and multifunctionality. While two-dimensional (2D) materials have demonstrated their effectiveness as triboelectric layers through charge trapping, graphdiyne—a material with exceptional physicochemical properties—along with its composites, remains underexplored in energy harvesting and sensing. Herein, thin, porous graphdiyne and graphdiyne oxide composite films were fabricated through a facile casting and solvent extraction method, and the associated TENG devices achieve the highest peak power density of 4.35 W/m 2 , outperforming most existing 2D material composite-based counterparts. Notably, the device demonstrates remarkable long-term stability, enduring over 22,000 cycles without any decline in voltage. Moreover, this wearable TENG shows considerable versatility; when integrated into a face mask, it effectively functions as a self-powered respiratory sensor capable of speech recognition and monitoring breathing status. It also serves as a bending sensor for Morse code detection. By harnessing the unique physicochemical properties of the porous composite films, the devices exhibit capacities for volatile organic compounds detection.

Interfacial Charge Transfer in Fluorinated Graphdiyne-Confined SnO2 Nanotube Arrays for High-Performance Sodium Storage

Keke Xie,Zhihui Zhang,Qian Chang,Changshui Huang,Feng He,Yuliang Li

The charge transfer at heterointerface can significantly influence the sodium-storage kinetics and durability of metal–oxide anodes for sodium ion battery. Here, this study reported the in situ fabrication of FGDY@SnO 2 nanotube arrays electrode directly on a copper foil current collector. The FGDY/SnO 2 heterointerface composed by fluorinated graphdiyne (FGDY) confined tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) nanotube arrays feature incomplete interfacial charge transfer, with electrons transferred from FGDY to SnO 2 , creating a locally modulated electronic environment that accelerates Na + transport and interfacial redox kinetics. Combined experimental and theoretical calculations have systematically revealed the synergistic advantages of the advanced FGDY@SnO 2 electrode in terms of improving electrochemical reaction kinetics, stabling solid–electrolyte interphase and electrode structure. Thus, the FGDY@SnO 2 anodes show high rate-performance and stability. At a high current density of 5 A g −1 , FGDY@SnO 2 can achieve a sodium storage capacity of 563.8 mAh g −1 . This work provides a material design paradigm for the fabrication of high-rate and long-cycle-life Sn-based anode toward advanced sodium-ion batteries. Graphical An innovative electrode with hybridized structure (FGDY@SnO 2 ), fabricated from tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) nanotube arrays with a fluorinated graphdiyne (FGDY) decorating layer, synergistically enhances sodium storage performance via structural design and interfacial engineering. The interfacial charge transfer promotes the kinetics of sodium ions and the advanced architecture endows remarkable longevity of sodium-ion batteries.

Graphdiyne-Induced CoN/CoS2 Heterojunction: Boosting Efficiency for Bifunctional Oxygen Electrochemistry in Zinc-Air Batteries

Min Cui,Yanan Yuan,Yue Wu,Zhongmei Che,Peixuan Li,Xiaochen Yang,Yuqi Chen,Wei Hu,Jingui Wang,Shuai Wang,Yingshu Guo,Zexing Wu

Graphical This graphical abstract visually summarizes the main findings of the study, showcasing how the strategic design of a GDY-induced CoN/CoS 2 heterojunction within a nitrogen-doped carbon substrate leads to a more efficient and durable electrocatalyst for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions in high-performance zinc-air batteries. The performance of zinc-air battery is constrained by the sluggish rate of oxygen electrode reaction, particularly under high current discharge conditions where the kinetic process of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) decelerates significantly. To address this challenge, we present a novel phase transition strategy that facilitates the creation of a heteroatom-doped heterointerface (CoN/CoS 2 ). The meticulously engineered CoN/CoS 2 /NC electrocatalyst displays a superior ORR half-wave potential of 0.87 V and an OER overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Experimental and computational analysis confirm that the CoN/CoS 2 heterostructure optimizes local charge distribution, accelerates electron transfer, and tunes active sites for enhanced catalysis. Notably, this heterojunction improves stability by resisting corrosion and degradation under harsh alkaline conditions, thus demonstrating superior performance and longevity in a custom-made liquid zinc-air battery. This research provides valuable practical and theoretical foundations for designing efficient heterointerfaces in electrocatalysis applications.
