Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted growing attention in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems (e.g., Zn-air batteries, ZABs) owing to their structural tunability, ordered porosity and high specific surface area. In this work, for the first time, the three-dimensional (3D) highly open catalyst (CNFs/CoZn-MOF@COF) possessing hierarchical porous structure and high-density active sites of uniform cobalt (Co) nanoparticles and metal-N x (M-N x , M = Co and Zn) is demonstrated, which is fabricated using electrospinning technique in combination with MOF/COF hybridization strategy and direct pyrolysis. Benefiting from the well-designed branch-leaf nanostructures, plentiful and uniform active sites on the MOF/COF-derived carbon frameworks, as well as the synergistic effect of multiple active sites, CNFs/CoZn-MOF@COF catalyst achieves superior electrocatalytic activity and stability towards both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a small potential gap (ΔE = 0.75 V). In situ Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate that the CoOOH intermediates are the main active species during OER/ORR. Significantly, both aqueous and all-solid-state rechargeable ZABs assembled with CNFs/CoZn-MOF@COF as the air cathode show high open-circuit potential, outstanding peak power density, large capacity and long cycle life. More impressively, the obtained all-solid-state ZAB also displays superb mechanical flexibility and device stability under different, showcasing great application deformations potential in portable and wearable electronics. This work provides a new insight into the design and exploitation of bifunctional catalysts from MOF/COF hybrid materials for energy storage and conversion devices.

The increasing presence of pyrethroid pesticides (PYs) in agricultural products necessitates advanced analytical methods for food safety monitoring. This study introduces a novel metal–organic framework–covalent organic framework (MOF–COF) hybrid adsorbent, NH₂–MIL–101(Fe)@TpBD, for the rapid extraction of PYs from eggplants via pH/salt–independent dispersive solid–phase extraction (DSPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The optimized method achieved efficient extraction of four PYs (permethrin, cyfluthrin, esfenvalerate, and bifenthrin) within 4 min, using 20 mg of adsorbent and 1.5 mL of acetonitrile. The method demonstrated excellent linearity (0.12–8.00 mg·kg −1 ), high sensitivity (LODs: 0.0416–0.0515 mg·kg −1 ), and robust recoveries (85.5–107.6 %), with enrichment factors of 389–410. Adsorption mechanisms were dominated by chemisorption, facilitated by π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding. The rapidity and efficiency of this method highlight its potential for high-throughput food safety analysis. This work underscores the synergistic integration of MOF/COF hybrids as advanced adsorbents for pesticide monitoring in complex food matrices.

Recently, novel core–shell MOF@COF hybrids display excellent performance in various fields because of their inherited advantages from their parent MOFs and/or COFs. However, it is still a grand challenge to adjust the morphology of MOFs and/or COFs for consequent performance improvement. Herein, a Ti-MOF@TpTt hybrid coated with ultra-thin COF nanobelt, which is different from the fibrillar-like parent COF, is successfully synthesized through a sequential growth strategy. The as-obtained Pd decorated Ti-MOF@TpTt catalyst exhibits much higher photocatalytic performance than those of Ti-MOF, TpTt-COF, and Ti-MOF@TpTt hybrids with fibrillar-like COF shell for the photocatalytic cascade reactions of ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis and nitroarenes hydrogenation. These can be attributed to its high BET surface area, core–shell structure, and type II heterojunction, which offers more accessible active sites and improves the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Finally, the possible mechanisms of the cascade reaction are also proposed to well explain the improved performance of this photocatalytic system. This work presents a constructive route for designing core–shell MOF@COF hybrids with controllable morphology adjustment of COF shell, leading to the improved photocatalytic ability to broaden the applications of MOF/COF hybrid materials.

A light-responsive oxidase-mimicking nanozyme was constructed based on a MOF@COF heterojunction. • The nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor enables rapid, smartphone-compatible TAC detection. • Light-driven, O₂-dependent ROS pathway enables photoregulated nanozyme design for food analysis. A rapid and accurate assay for total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is essential in food quality control and nutritional evaluation. In this study, a light-responsive oxidase-like nanozyme, UiO-66-NH 2 @TpPa-COF, was constructed by in-situ growth of TpPa-COF on amino-functionalized UiO-66-NH 2 . Comprehensive characterization confirmed a tightly coupled, crystalline, and hierarchically porous heterostructure with a narrowed band gap and enhanced charge transfer. Under 365 nm light, the composite exhibited efficient photoelectrochemical performance and oxidase-like activity via a light-driven, oxygen-dependent reactive oxygen species pathway. As a colorimetric TAC (μM AA Eq.) sensor, it achieved a wide linear range (0.02–60 μM for AA), a low detection limit (5.988 nM), and reliable performance in real samples (fruits, vegetables, beverages) with recoveries of 96–107%. This work provides both a sensitive nanozyme-based sensing platform and insights into the rational design of MOF/COF hybrids for advanced food analysis. A light-responsive oxidase-mimicking UiO-66-NH₂@TpPa-COF nanozyme was constructed via in-situ interfacial growth. Amino groups act as molecular bridges, forming a coupled heterojunction with narrowed bandgap, hierarchical porosity, and efficient charge separation. Under 365 nm UV, it shows reversible, O₂-dependent ROS-mediated oxidase activity. Integrated with a smartphone-based colorimetric platform, it enables rapid on-site TAC quantification in foods. This work offers both a practical food quality tool and a blueprint for MOF/COF heterojunctions in sensing. Download: Download high-res image (122KB) Download: Download full-size image

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are highly malignant tumors with limited treatment options owing to their heterogeneity and resistance to conventional therapies. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi) have shown potential for STS treatment, with PDT being effective for sarcomas located on the extremities and body surface and PARPi targeting defects in homologous recombination repair. To address the limitations of PDT and harness the potential of PARPi, herein, a novel therapeutic approach for STS treatment combining nanocapsules bearing integrated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), i.e., MOF@COF, with PDT and PARPi is proposed. Nanocapsules are designed, referred to as ZTN@COF@poloxamer, which contain a Zr-based MOF and tetrakis (4-carbethoxyphenyl) porphyrin as a photosensitizer, are coated with a COF to improve the sensitizing properties, and are loaded with niraparib to inhibit DNA repair. Experiments demonstrate that this new nanocapsules treatment significantly inhibits STS growth, promotes tumor cell apoptosis, exhibits high antitumor activity with minimal side effects, activates the immune response of the tumor, and inhibits lung metastasis in vivo. Therefore, MOF@COF nanocapsules combined with PARPi offer a promising approach for STS treatment, with the potential to enhance the efficacy of PDT and prevent tumor recurrence.

Artificial enzymes mimicking natural processes offer promising solutions for treating infections, but their development faces challenges in synthesis complexity and therapeutic performance. We present a modular-assembly strategy to construct hierarchical MOF@COF heterostructures through covalent interface engineering, bypassing the need for function-specific monomer synthesis while amplifying functionality. By growing porphyrin-based COF shell on amino-functionalized Fe-MIL-88A MOF core, we achieved a morphology-controlled core-shell architecture with well-defined heterojunctions. This hybrid integrates the MOF’s dual peroxidase- and catalase-like activities with the COF’s photoactivity, enabling cascade therapeutic effects. MOF@COF selectively converts endogenous H 2 O 2 into bactericidal ⋅OH and O 2 within infected tissues, enhancing photodynamic therapy through improved light harvesting and charge separation while alleviating hypoxia-induced resistance. As a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, MOF@COF simultaneously utilizes and remodels the infectious microenvironment, significantly accelerating wound healing. This work demonstrates a rational design approach for biocompatible artificial enzymes with synergistic catalytic sites, advancing self-reinforcing therapeutic strategies for infection treatment.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), a major foodborne toxin and bioterrorism agent, poses significant threats to global public health security. To address the urgent need for rapid on-site detection, we report an electrochemical molecularly imprinted sensor based on magnetic core-shell architecture, where two porous framework materials are covalently integrated as the imprinted matrix. The sensor exhibited high selectivity, showing a wide linear range from 5 × 10 −11 to 5 × 10 −5 g·mL −1 and a low detection limit (LOD) of 1.6 × 10 −12 g·mL −1 . Excellent stability and reproducibility were demonstrated in the analysis of spiked milk and water samples. Furthermore, the proposed imprinted nanomaterial exhibited satisfactory results in milk and water samples. Additionally, a portable smartphone-based sensing platform was constructed by integrating the Fe 3 O 4 @MOF@COF@MIP. This platform enabled the on-site determination of SEB with a LOD of 3.3 × 10 −12 g∙mL −1 . The combination of novel magnetic molecularly imprinted composites with mobile detection technology provides a powerful, field-deployable tool for SEB monitoring, advancing the application of multifunctional nanomaterials in biosensing and biodefense.
