Hyperbranched transition metal phosphides (TMPs) nanocrystals are an interesting class of materials, which can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, big challenge remains for the preparation of ternary hyperbranched TMPs, and relationship between their HER performances and the splitting degree is also not well understood. Here, hyperbranched Co-Ni-P nanocrystals with different splitting degrees were prepared via a novel strategy, and their alkaline HER performances were studied. During the synthesis process, hyperbranched Co 2 P nanocrystals were used as template, and Ni precursors were injected into the reaction solution at different holding stage. When the Ni precursor was injected earlier, the podgy particles with low splitting degree would be obtained. Conversely, delaying the injection of Ni precursor would lead to high splitting degree. The formation process of ternary phase was also studied. After Ni precursor was injected, a Co-Ni-P amorphous layer was formed on the surface of the Co 2 P particles, and then the Ni atoms diffused into the Co 2 P phase to form Co-Ni-P nanocrystals. Electrochemical performances tests show that the splitting degree has great impact on HER performances. The higher splitting degree usually leads to larger electrochemical surface area, and higher catalytic activity can be achieved. The sheaf-like Co-Ni-P nanocrystals demonstrate a small overpotential of 119 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and good durability over 23 h in 1 M KOH solution. We believe that this work can help understand the relationship between the HER performances of hyperbranched TMPs nanocrystals and their splitting degree, and provide a synthetic strategy for the preparation of highly efficient TMPs catalysts.

Transition metal phosphates (TMPs) are considered as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity (up to 1000 mAh g −1 ) and low cost. However, the poor electrochemical reaction kinetics and large volume expansion of TMPs are not conducive to practical applications in SIBs. In view of this, a kind of self-supported iron nickel phosphide (Fe-Ni-P) composite nanosheet arrays are obtained by reasonable hydrothermal reaction and phosphidation process. The nanosheet arrays construction can significantly release the mechanical strain and promote electrochemical reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the volume expansion can be largely alleviated by the synergistic effect of Fe 2 P and Ni 2 P. Benefiting from the unique design, the robust Fe-Ni-P arrays manifest remarkable Na + storage capability. The Fe-Ni-P nanosheet arrays exhibit a large discharge capacity of 300.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . And there is a reversible capacity of 201.7 mAh g −1 can be maintained without obvious capacity loss after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 in SIBs.

Electrocatalysts are one of the most important parts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to overcome the sluggish kinetics. Herein, amorphous Fe–Ni–P–B–O (FNPBO) nanocages as efficient OER catalysts are synthesized by a simple low-cost and scalable method at room temperature. The samples are chemically stable, in clear contrast to reported unstable or even pyrophoric boride samples. The Fe/Ni ratio of the FNPBO nanocages can be continuously adjusted to optimize the OER catalytic performance. The FNPBO nanocages composed of multicomponent elements can weaken the metal–metal bonds, thus rearranging the electron density around the catalytic metal atom centers and reducing the energy barrier for intermediate formation. Hence the optimized FNPBO (Fe6.4Ni16.1P12.9B4.3O60.2) catalyst shows superior intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for OER. The low overpotential to afford the current density of 10 mA cm–2 (236 mV), the small Tafel slope (39 mV dec–1), and the high specific current density (26.44 mA cm–2) at a given overpotential of 300 mV make a sharp contrast to state-of-the-art RuO2 (327 mV, 136 mV dec–1, and 0.028 mA cm–2, respectively).

Recently, transition metal phosphides have attracted great interest of researchers as potentially promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) ordered porous nickel phosphorus (Ni-P) has been facilely synthesized by a three-steps process including electrodeposition of polystyrene colloidal templates, electrodeposition of Ni-P and removing polystyrene. Compared with porous Ni, porous Ni-P exhibits ultrahigh charge storage performance (2270.26 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and super-long cycle stability (86.6% capacity retention after 4800 cycles at 100 mV s−1). Furthermore, a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device assembled with porous Ni-P and activated carbon (AC) has been evaluated its performance in practical application. The ASC device displays ultrahigh energy density 20.1 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 12.8 kW kg−1, and the mass specific capacitance maintains 147.8% of the initial value after 3000 cycles. Furthermore, the energy storage mechanism of porous Ni-P and the reasons for its performance improvement have been explored. The superior performance of 3D ordered porous Ni-P makes it become the most promising material for supercapacitor.

The electrodeposition of Ni–P–PTFE nanocomposites offers an effective approach to reduce mold–polymer interface adhesion and improve the replication of polymer micro features in injection molding. However, it is still challenging to fabricate Ni–P–PTFE nanocomposites with low internal stress and nanoscale surface roughness in electrolytes containing high PTFE concentrations. In this study, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was introduced into the electrolytes to achieve a good dispersion of PTFE nanoparticles. Ni–P–PTFE nanocomposites with various compositions were successfully electrodeposited, and their tribological properties were analyzed. The electroformed Ni–P–PTFE nanocomposites with high PTFE and phosphorus contents showed a low surface roughness and surface energy compared to nickel electrodeposits. Ni–P–PTFE nanocomposites also exhibited a low coefficient of friction (COF) and wear loss when electroformed from an electrolyte containing 32 g/L phosphorus acid and 5 g/L PTFE nanoparticle. The COF of Ni–P–PTFE against stainless steel and poly(methyl methacrylate) was 0.2 and 0.12, respectively, representing a decrease of 80% and 85% compared to nickel electrodeposits. These enhancements in self-lubricating performances were primarily attributed to the low surface roughness and a shift in wear modes from adhesive wear to predominantly mild abrasive wear.

A new strategy for synthesizing Ni–P alloy nanoparticles with a core-shell structure is proposed, which involves a facile ionothermal process in a deep eutectic solvent (DES). The architecture of the core-shell structured Ni–P alloys is featured as amorphous spherical cores homogeneously wrapped by self-generated crystalline Ni3P shells of different thickness, which rely on the molar ratio of Ni2+/H2PO2− in the choline chloride (ChCl)/ethylene glycol (EG) based eutectic mixture. As an anode for lithium ion batteries, cyclic voltammetry curves, electrochemical impedance spectra, and cyclability of the novel structured Ni–P nanoparticles were evaluated. It was found that the sample with a thicker crystalline shell exhibited improved capability and reversibility over the sample with a thinner one, especially at a higher discharge–charge current density. It was suggested that the crystalline shell can enhance the conductivity of the amorphous cores, suppress the aggregation of active particles and increase the structural stability during cycling.

The sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hampers the H2 production by H2O electrolysis, and it is very important for the development of highly efficient and low-priced OER catalysts. Herein, a representative metalloporphyrinic MOF, PCN-600-Ni, integrated with graphene oxide (GO), serves as an ideal precursor and template to afford bimetallic iron–nickel phosphide/reduced graphene oxide composite (denoted as Fe–Ni–P/rGO-T; T represents pyrolysis temperature) via pyrolysis and subsequent phosphidation process. Thanks to the highly porous structure, the synergetic effect of Fe and Ni elements in bimetallic phosphide, and the good conductivity endowed by rGO, the optimized Fe–Ni–P/rGO-400 exhibits remarkable OER activity in 1 M KOH solution, affording an extremely low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which is far superior to the commercial IrO2 and among the best in all non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

To deeply understand the role of P in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), SiO2-supported Ni and Ni–P catalysts with different P/Ni ratios (x) were prepared. The as-prepared samples were characterized by various characterization methods. The HDO activity and product distribution over the Ni/SiO2 and N–P/SiO2-x were compared and the effects of x on the structure, acidity, formation mechanism of active phases and HDO performance were studied taking m-cresol HDO as a model reaction. The results showed that the introduction of P promotes the formation of smaller active sites and contributes to the creation of weak and medium strength acid sites through the formation of P–OH groups and Niδ+ in Ni2P. HDO over the Ni/SiO2 catalyst occurs mainly via the hydrogenation (HYD) route with 3-methyl-cyclohexanol (3-MCHnol) as the main product. However, for Ni–P/SiO2-x catalysts, methyl-cyclohexane (MCH) selectivity increases first and then decreases with the increase of x, reaching a maximum of 95% at x = 1. The acidity generated by the introduction of P contributes to increased MCH selectivity, while the dehydration of 3-MCHnol to MCH occurs mainly on acid sites. However, the excessively high P content (x ≥ 2.0) leads to a significant increase of MB (toluene) selectivity, which is associated with the increase in Ni(I) sites. About 100% m-cresol conversion was achieved with Ni–P/SiO2-1.0 when the m-cresol (g)/catalyst (g) ratio was 3, with MCH (99.4%) as the major product, showing great promise for deep HDO catalysis.

Ni–P–MoS 2 composite coatings often suffer from reduced corrosion resistance despite their excellent lubricating properties. To address this limitation, this study developed a novel Ni–P–MoS 2 –PTFE composite coating via electrodeposition, incorporating hydrophilic-modified MoS 2 nanosheets and oxidized PTFE particles to enhance co-deposition and dispersion. Electrochemical tests, salt spray exposure, and mechanical characterization demonstrated significantly improved properties. The optimized coating with 3 g L –1 PTFE exhibited superior corrosion resistance, showing a maximum electrochemical impedance of 118 300 Ω cm 2 after 20 days of salt spray testing. It also displayed excellent mechanical performance with a Vickers hardness of 774.4 HV and a low friction coefficient of 0.1128. The synergistic effect of PTFE and MoS 2 effectively densified the coating structure, providing enhanced barrier protection and lubrication. This work offers a practical strategy for designing high-performance anti-corrosion and wear-resistant coatings suitable for demanding industrial environments.

Ceramic metallization provides an effective insulation strategy for reversible solid oxide cell (RSOC) pipeline connections that are prone to side short-circuiting. In this work, 95 wt.% Al 2 O 3 ceramics were metallized by the activated Mo–Mn method, and 15 metallization formulations with different Mo, MnO, Al 2 O 3 , and SiO 2 contents were designed to optimize the microstructure, phase composition, and bonding strength of the metallized layer. The results show that, after sintering at 1400°C for 1 h, the optimal formulation consists of 70 wt.% Mo, 9 wt.% MnO, 6.3 wt.% Al 2 O 3 , and 14.7 wt.% SiO 2 . Under this condition, the Mo skeleton is continuous, the activator melt forms a glassy phase, and a reliable transition layer is developed at the ceramic/metallization interface, yielding a shear strength of 146.3 MPa. Electroless Ni–P post-plating on the optimized metallized surface produces a dense and continuous coating with typical nodular morphology and an average thickness of about 15–17 µm. The plated layer exhibits a relatively uniform hardness of 382.84 HV and maintains good structural integrity after 300 thermal-shock cycles, demonstrating promising potential for RSOC-related ceramic-to-metal insulating connection components.

Ni-P-nano-Al 2 O 3 composite coatings on the mild steel were obtained by adding Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles into the traditional electroless Ni-P bath. Cationic and anionic surfactants were used to prevent the agglomeration of the incorporated nano-Al 2 O 3 . Surface morphology , compositions and microstructures of the coating were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well. Corrosion resistances of the modified mild steel samples were evaluated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that compared to the pure Ni-P coating on the mild steel, the coating formed in the bath with 6 g/L nano-Al 2 O 3 performed the highest resistance. Under the optimal conditions, the adding of anionic surfactant (SDBS) improved the anti-corrosion performance of the samples further, while the addition of cationic surfactant led to a worse corrosion resistance. The potential mechanism was that anionic surfactant molecules would contact with active sites of Ni-P composite coating and nano-Al 2 O 3 in the bath, which would improve the dispersion of nano-Al 2 O 3 , thus leading to a homogeneous coating with better corrosion resistance.

Ni-P alloys have been successfully electrodeposited in the choline chloride and ethylene glycol with a molar proportion of 1:2(CE) electrolyte and their activities toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have been also evaluated. The electrodeposition of Ni-P alloy follows a co-deposition process, and the bulk growth of which depends on an instantaneous nucleation under diffusion control. The morphologies of Ni-P alloys are significantly influenced by the P content, and low P content can lead to a smooth surface. As expected, Ni-9.0 wt.% P alloy shows an impressive HER catalytic performance with a Tafel slope (b) of 72.9 mV dec −1 and an overpotential of 105 mV at 50 mA, in agreement with its large ECSA ( C dl = 3.25 mF cm −2 ) and small interface charge-transfer resistance. More interestingly, Ni-9.0 wt.% P alloy exhibits a sustainable catalytic activity toward HER after 1000 cycling test with a tiny potential decline of ~10 mV at 100 mA cm −2 . Such a striking HER activity of Ni-9.0 wt.% P alloy can be attributed to the synergistic effect among the induced active sites from lattice contraction, negatively charged P incorporation, and a mixed nanometre crystal and amorphous structure. Thus, Ni-P alloy electrodeposited in a CE-based electrolyte can be used as a promising electrode material with high HER activity in alkaline solutions for hydrogen production.
