Rapid microwave preparation of CuS/ZnCdS Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xueying Du,Jiaxin Hu,Qihang Sun,Hongquan Fu,Juan Zhang,Jinming Chang,Hejun Gao,Yunwen Liao

Low-cost transition metal sulfides have been shown to be ideal candidates for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . However, most preparation processes have long reaction times and high energy consumption. In this work, CuS/ZnCdS heterojunction was prepared by a rapid and energy-saving microwave method . It was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD , XPS , and photoelectrochemical tests. The results showed that CuS was successfully loaded with ZnCdS and did not alter the intrinsic structure of ZnCdS. It not only improved the light absorption efficiency, but lowered the position of the conduction band and reduced the forbidden band width. The optimum photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of CuS/ZnCdS could get 7.58 mmol g −1  h −1 and the AQE was 10.07% at 420 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction to promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. This work provides a valuable route to explore high quality ZnCdS based photocatalysts using a fast, low-cost microwave technique.

NiO/ZnCdS Nanocomposite as an Efficient and Stable Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalyst for CO2 Photoreduction

Jing Fan,Shizhen Gao,Yanan Yang,Yuming Dong,Qi Qi,Fenhong Song,Jie Liu

As the world grapples with energy shortages and environmental challenges, photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has emerged as a game-changing solution in sustainable technology. By converting carbon dioxide into high-value hydrocarbon fuels, this innovative approach not only helps combat climate change but also paves the way for a cleaner, greener energy future. Developing high-performance, low-energy-consumption, and long-term stable photocatalysts remains a critical challenge in advancing sustainable technologies. In this study, the plate-like NiO supported ZnCdS nanoparticles with high stability is prepared by solvothermal method. Compared with ZnCdS and NiO, the photocatalytic properties of the composite materials are obviously improved. As a consequence, the 12NiO/ZnCdS composite exhibited CO evolution rates of 71.13 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 , 6.8 times higher than those of pristine ZnCdS. The selectivity toward CO reached 75%. Characterization results confirmed the successful synthesis of the catalyst, where the interfacial interaction between composite components formed a built-in electric field. This mechanism afforded more active sites, enhanced light absorption properties, and promoted carrier migration rate under photoexcitation. The efficient charge separation not only suppressed photo-corrosion but also enhanced the catalyst's reductive capacity for CO 2 reduction. This study establishes a novel design paradigm for engineering highly stable ZnCdS-based photocatalysts toward solar-driven CO 2 conversion, offering compelling inspiration for material innovation. Furthermore, the fundamental principles elucidated herein provide a valuable framework to guide future exploration in related energy-transduction technologies.

Charge-photothermal-catalysis synergy in ZnCdS/Co2SnO4 for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and benzyl alcohol oxidation

Xiao Zhang,Yuxin Wang,Shuhan Sun,Xianqiang Xiong,Qin Li,Kangle Lv

The development of efficient bifunctional photocatalysts for simultaneous H 2 evolution and organic oxidation is impeded by the difficulty in synergizing charge separation, broad-spectrum light harvesting, and surface reaction kinetics. This challenge is addressed through the construction of a ZnCdS/Co 2 SnO 4 S-scheme heterojunction, in which Co 2 SnO 4 is engineered as a triple-function module. This module not only establishes an interfacial electric field for directed S-scheme charge transfer, preserving high-potential carriers, but also acts as a potent photothermal agent, converting near-infrared light into localized heat to reduce the apparent activation energy for H 2 evolution. Furthermore, its spinel surface provides intrinsic catalytic sites with a near-optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy. This triadic synergy yields exceptional concurrent production of H 2 (31.7 mmol g –1 h –1 ) and benzaldehyde (28.8 mmol g –1 h –1 ). Our work provides a paradigm of concerted light-charge-heat management for designing advanced, full-spectrum-responsive photocatalytic systems.

Nitrogen-doped biochar assists rapid electron transfer at the ZnCdS/CoMoO4 interface to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production

Ziyu Li,Mei Li,Meijuan Ding,Xianglong Lyu,Jingyi Nie,Zhiliang Jin

s The interphase charge carrier transport rate in the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction represents one of the parameters influencing the photocatalytic hydrogen generation performance. Sunflower straw, which is considered as farm waste and urea to prepare N-doped biochar (NC) co-catalysts, and construction of a composite catalyst ZnCdS/CoMoO 4 –8/5 %NC for photocatalytic hydrogen production by in situ growth of CoMoO 4 and biochar loaded on ZnCdS. Using 10 vol% lactic acid as the sacrificial reagent, the composite catalyst produced 701 μmol of hydrogen over 5 h of photocatalysis. This yield represents 8.09-fold and 64.03-fold enhancements compared to pure ZnCdS and CoMoO 4 , respectively. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the periphery of the carbon framework in the biochar after N-doping was perturbed, thereby generating additional active sites for the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction. Through density-functional theory simulations and photoelectrochemical analyses, the introduction of NC was found to enhance photogenerated carrier migration. The ZnCdS/CoMoO 4 –8/5 %NC composite system forms a Z -scheme heterojunction, wherein heterojunction construction and biochar mediation synergistically promote directional migration of photogenerated charge carriers and enhance interfacial charge separation efficiency in the composite catalyst. The strategy of converting agricultural waste into efficient co-catalysts for resource recycling provides a new approach for the application of biochar in photocatalysis.

Facet Engineering Induced by Ce Doping: Enhanced (101) Facet Exposure for Boosted Photocatalytic Activity of ZnCdS Nanostructures

Yang Zhang,Yunhua Zhang,Hao Xie

Photocatalytic hydrogen production utilizes solar energy, particularly the visible light portion, to decompose water into hydrogen, offering a clean and sustainable solution to the global energy crisis. Developing efficient and stable visible-light-driven photocatalysts is essential to improve hydrogen evolution efficiency. In this work, Ce-doped ZnCdS photocatalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal method to enhance charge separation and photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. The 5% Ce-doped sample exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate 1.74 times higher than that of pure ZnCdS after 3 hours of irradiation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses reveal that Ce doping promotes the preferential exposure of highly active (101) facets and induces moderate grain growth, which reduces grain boundary defects and increases the number of active sites for H₂ generation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses confirm that the Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ redox centers lower the energy barrier for charge transfer and enhance electrical conductivity. Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent measurements demonstrate more efficient charge separation. As a result, the Ce-ZnCdS photocatalyst exhibits markedly improved visible-light responsiveness, photocatalytic efficiency, and structural stability, underscoring rare-earth doping as an effective strategy to optimize facet exposure and charge dynamics in ternary sulfide photocatalysts.

Hydrogen-bonded organic framework derived ultra-fine ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction with high-porosity for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Sanmei Liu,Wen Wang,Shunli Shi,Sheng Liao,Minli Zhong,Weiming Xiao,Shuhua Wang,Xuewen Wang,Chao Chen

The introduction of metal complex units makes it possible to expand the functional applications of metal hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (M-HOFs). An M-HOFs-templated strategy was developed to construct ultra-fine ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction with high-porosity for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. Due to the weak and feasible hydrogen-bonding interactions, the nonmetallic units on HOFs can be quickly replaced by S 2− in aqueous solution and derived into porous sulfides without pyrolysis process. Surprisingly, the surface area of ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction was up to 320 m 2 g −1 . The ultra-fine heterojunction with high porosity offered more surface reaction sites and shortened carrier transport distance, improving separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. The size and structure-dependent properties of ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate, which was 1.68 mmol h −1 without cocatalyst. This study provides a novel strategy for constructing ultra-fine heterojunction with high porosity and high surface area to achieve efficient H 2 evolution.

Chlorella microsphere bio-template synergistically enhances the performance and mechanism of ZnCdS for the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin

Wentong Su,Wei Zhang,Wenke Zhang,Yuantao Chen

This study used a solvothermal method to prepare chlorella microspheres (ZCS-Ch) loaded with carbon-hybridized, nitrogen-oxygen-doped Zn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (ZCS) nanoparticles, employing Chlorella (Ch) as a biological template. The catalyst's morphology and structure were characterized using XRD, SEM, and XPS. Under simulated visible light, the catalyst effectively degraded Norfloxacin (NOR). Experimental results show that the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite is greatly enhanced. ZCS-Ch8 achieved a 92.3% NOR degradation rate within 1 h, with a degradation rate of 0.04198 min-1, which is 1.6 and 15.6 times higher than ZCS (0.02963 min −1 ) and Ch (0.00269 min −1 ) respectively. The increased photocatalytic activity was examined through photoelectrochemical characterization. The addition of Ch effectively promoted charge transfer of photogenerated carriers and reduced their recombination. Finally, radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques confirmed that superoxide radical (·O 2 - ) is the main active species. Additionally, the catalyst showed excellent cycling stability over five consecutive degradation tests.

Z-scheme ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH photocatalyst followed dual-channel charge transfer via Au-intercalation for renewable hydrogen production

Ping Bai,Junyu Lang,Yinshu Wang,Haojie Tong,Zelin Wang,Bingbing Zhang,Yiguo Su,Zhanli Chai

Exploration of effective and renewable photocatalysts is essential for solar to hydrogen conversion technologies. However, the application of some photocatalysts with great potential, such as ZnCdS, are seriously limited by the sluggish charge transfer/separation and unavoidable light corrosion. In this work, Au/ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH ternary heterojunction was constructed by introducing Au nanoparticle mediator in core-shell ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH, which exhibits an enhanced H 2 production rate of 4.89 mmol g −1  h −1 under visible light irradiation and unexpected recyclability with 6.2 % rate reduction after 15 consecutive cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the dual pathways (Z-scheme and localized surface plasmon resonance) enabled in Au/ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH, which improves the separation of photo-generated carriers, accelerates the electron transport, and provides active sites for photocatalytic oxidation. This work provides a promising technology to jointly improve photocatalytic activity and stability by modulating the interfacial carrier dynamics of photocatalysts.

Synergistic Enhancement of Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic H2O2 Production over g-C3N4/ZnCdS by Zn Vacancies and Heterointerface Engineering

Zhenyu Wang,Wei Yan,Yingcong Wei,Jing Xu,Yuee Xie,Yuanping Chen,Xiaohong Yan

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important green oxidant, and developing efficient visible-light-driven routes for its synthesis is highly desirable. Herein, a CN/ZnV-ZCS composite photocatalyst was constructed by coupling g-C3N4(CN) with Zn-vacancy-containing ZnCdS (ZnV-ZCS) for photocatalytic H2O2production. The optimized CN/ZnV-10 delivered 44.58 mmol g−1H2O2within 60 min under 425 nm LED irradiation, outperforming pristine CN, ZCS, ZnV-ZCS, and vacancy-free CN/ZCS, with good cycling stability. Trapping and EPR results identify O2as the key electron acceptor and ·O2−as an important intermediate. Structural characterization and XPS results indicate successful Zn-vacancy introduction, intimate heterointerface formation, and interfacial electron redistribution. Combined VB-XPS, photoelectrochemical, and reactive-species analyses suggest that Zn vacancies are favorable for O2adsorption/activation, whereas the CN/ZnV-ZCS heterointerface promotes charge separation and migration. Based on the available evidence, a Z-scheme interfacial charge-transfer pathway is established in the CN/ZnV-ZCS system.

Tuning the Morphology of ZnCdS@CeO2 Z-scheme Heterostructures From Core-Shell to Core-Satellite for Superior Photocatalytic Performance

Yong Liu,Baowei Shen,Sijia Zhao,Guixia Ma,Yujie Ma,Yu Xia,Xing Wang,Yuhua Feng

In addition to solar cell, photocatalysis is an alternative way for the direct utilization of the clean and sustainable solar energy. Currently, the core challenge in photocatalysis is the efficiency of the separation and transfer of the photogenerated electrons (e⁻) and holes (h⁺) in photocatalysts. Herein, continuous tuning of ZnCdS-CeO2 heterostructures via a seed-mediated growth approach yielded two typical hybrid structures: ZnCdS-CeO2 core-satellite (ZCSC I) and ZnCdS@CeO2 core-shell (ZCSC II) structures. Leveraging the Janus configuration of ZCSC I structure, a marked improvement in charge separation and transfer efficiency was observed in photocurrent and transient fluorescence tests. This enhancement should be due to the electron “sink effect” in ZCSC I structure as the spatial separation of the ZnCdS (ZCS) and CeO2 domains. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the heterostructures was evaluated using the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction. Consistent with the above tests, the ZCSC I showed the highest MB degradation rate of 91% within 60 minutes. From the calculated kinetic rate constants (k values), the k value of ZCSC I structure is 4, 2.1, and 1.5 times higher than those of CeO2, ZCS, and ZCSC II structure, respectively. Through radical trapping experiments, the ZnCdS-CeO2 heterostructures were identified as Z-scheme heterojunction. This work provides solid mechanistic understanding and valuable insights for improving the catalytic efficiency of hybrid photocatalysts, which is helpful for the rational design and precise control of the hybrid photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency and would assist their applications in diverse catalytic reactions.

The Built-in Electric Field Regulates the d-band Center of the FeCo2O4/ZnCdS Heterojunction to Enhance Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Shuai Wang,Yihu Ke,Fei Jin,Youji Li,Zhiliang Jin

Noble metal nanoparticle co-catalysts offer high photocatalytic activity but are costly and scarce, driving the search for efficient, economical alternatives. We constructed a FeCo 2 O 4 /ZnCdS composite catalyst using electrostatic self-assembly. Optimizing the FeCo 2 O 4 loading to 10 wt% achieved a remarkable hydrogen production rate of 9080 μmol g −1 h −1 −3.49 times higher than pristine ZnCdS and exceeding precious metal co-catalysts like Au. Kelvin probe force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal an S-scheme heterojunction forms between FeCo 2 O 4 and ZnCdS. The resulting internal electric field efficiently drives directional charge migration and significantly suppresses electron-hole recombination. DFT further shows the interface electric field shifts the d-band center, optimizing reactant molecule adsorption. This avoids catalyst deactivation from strong adsorption while overcoming the energy barrier from weak adsorption, creating an ideal moderate-strength activated state. This work deepens understanding of S-scheme mechanisms and provides a new strategy for economical photocatalytic hydrogen production. Graphical The built-in electric field in FeCo 2 O 4 /ZnCdS heterojunctions regulates the d-band center to optimize hydrogen adsorption energy. An S-scheme charge transfer mechanism achieves a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 9080 μmol g − 1 h − 1 , surpassing noble-metal cocatalysts. Density functional theory and Kelvin probe force microscope studies confirm that interfacial electric field engineering enhances carrier separation and reaction kinetics, providing an efficient noble-metal-free strategy.

Synergistic Enhancement of S-Scheme Heterojunction and Macroscopic Assembly: Electrospun ZnCdS/CoS2 Fiber Membranes Achieve Efficient and Stable Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Tingting Yang,Yufei Li,Liwei Lu,Jianghua Du,Xin Guo

Achieving efficient and stable solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production requires simultaneously overcoming the issues of insufficient charge separation at the microscopic scale and difficult catalyst recovery at the macroscopic scale. In this study, an S-Scheme ZnCdS/CoS2 heterojunction catalyst was integrated into a PVDF/PVP/TiO2 electrospun fiber membrane via electrospinning technology, constructing a catalytic material that combines microscopic heterojunctions with a macroscopic membrane structure to realize synergistic enhancement between the microscopic heterojunction and the macroscopic assembly. At the microscopic level, the S-scheme heterojunction promotes the separation of photogenerated charge carriers through an internal electric field, thereby increasing the hydrogen production rate to 36.47 μmol/mg, which is 5 times higher than that of pure ZnCdS catalyst. At the macroscopic level, the PVDF/PVP/TiO2 electrospun fiber membrane provides a stable support for the ZnCdS/CoS2 S-scheme heterojunction, increasing active sites while enabling easy recovery. The hydrogen production efficiency of this fiber membrane is 2.3 times that of the powdered ZnCdS/CoS2 heterojunction, with an activity retention rate of 90.7% after repeated use. This study’s strategy of combining heterojunctions with electrospinning offers a feasible approach to simultaneously enhance the hydrogen production efficiency, stability, and recyclability of photocatalytic systems.
