A novel fluorescent probe based on N, B, F co-doped carbon dots for highly selective and sensitive determination of sulfathiazole

Letian Chen,Yongli Liu,Guohao Cheng,Zegang Fan,Jinyu Yuan,Shuailong He,Guifen Zhu

The widespread occurrence of sulfathiazole (STZ) in the environment has raised concerns regarding the potential risks to ecosystem and human health. Thus, there is a need to develop facile and efficient methods for monitoring STZ. In this study, a novel fluorescent probe, based on N, B, F co-doped carbon dots (N, B, F-CDs), was developed for the highly sensitive and selective determination of STZ. The fluorescent N, B, F-CDs were prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method using malonate and 1-allyl-3-vinylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid as precursors. The obtained N, B, F-CDs exhibited excellent fluorescence response toward STZ due to the inner filter effect (IFE), which caused the fluorescence to be quenched. The fluorescent probe allowed the STZ concentration to be accurately determined with a low detection limit of 5.5 ng mL −1 in two wide linear ranges of 0.008–10 μg mL −1 and 10–45 μg mL −1 . The practicability of the fluorescent probe was further validated in river water, soil, milk, and egg samples, and the satisfactory spiked recoveries of STZ ranged from 96.1 to 101.6%. The proposed fluorescent probe based on N, B, F-CDs can be easily prepared and possess high selectivity and sensitivity, thereby displaying its tremendous potential for the identification and determination of STZ in the environment.

Carbon dots modified hydrange-shaped ZnCo(OH)F used as a flexible electrode for sensitive detection of dopamine and uric acid

Linghui Cao,Yuanxinyi Zhou,Tianyu Shen,Aijuan Xie,Shiping Luo,Baozhu Yang

Dopamine (DA), widely recognized as the most prevalent catecholamine neurotransmitter in the brain, functions as a vital regulator of various physiological processes within the central nervous system. Meanwhile, uric acid (UA) serves as the terminal product of purine metabolism, and hyperuricemia emerges as a significant risk factor for gout, with a steep escalation in risk as blood uric acid levels surge. Consequently, monitoring the concentrations of DA and UA in biological fluids is crucial not only for the treatment of related disorders but also for enhancing disease prevention strategies. In this work, the blooming hydrangea shaped ZnCo(OH)F/carbon dots (CDs) composite was grown on carbon cloth (CC) substrate by a simple hydrothermal method, which was used as a flexible sensor for the detection of DA and UA. The unique open structure and morphologic adjustment strategy of ZnCo(OH)F/CDs/CC provided a large surface area and highly exposed active site. After screening the experimental variables that affect the sensor performance, the optimal ZnCo(OH)F/CDs/CC flexible electrode achieved individual and simultaneous detection for DA and UA in the concentration ranges of 1.0 220.0 µM and 1.0 500.0 µM, the detection limits (LOD) of DA and UA were 0.0129 and 0.044 μM, respectively (S/N=3). In addition, the sensor exhibited good repeatability, stability and selectivity, realizing the detection of DA and UA in human serum with recovery rate of 95.20 % 105.3 %. Also, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to explore the interaction between electrode material and detected substrate. A simple hydrothermal method was utilized to grow the ZnCo(OH)F/CDs composite onto the CC substrate. The presence of F − in ZnCo(OH)F can increase the charge mobility and improve the conductivity. ZnCo(OH)F/CDs/CC as flexible electrode material can determine DA and UA simultaneously in human serum with a satisfactory recovery rate. This flexible sensor has a broad application prospect in the manufacture of wearable devices.

Doped rare earth elements enhance gas sensing properties of hollow spiral-like Mn(OH)F semiconductor sensors for acetate esters detection

Zhijia Liao,Zhenyu Yuan,Hongliang Gao,Fanli Meng

This study successfully synthesized a series of Mn(OH)F hollow structures doped with rare earth elements (Sm, Nd, Ce, and Tb) using a hydrothermal method . A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the influence of these dopant elements on the morphology and gas-sensitive properties of Mn(OH)F. The gas-sensing performance of Mn(OH)F nanomaterials doped with Sm, Nd, Ce, and Tb was extensively investigated at 150℃ for methyl acetate , ethyl acetate , propyl acetate , and butyl acetate . The results demonstrated good gas-sensing capabilities, with responses reaching 2.0, 2.0, 2.0, and 2.5, respectively. Compared to undoped Mn(OH)F nanomaterials , the operating temperature of these sensors was reduced by about 100℃, and the response values were nearly tripled. Exceptional selectivity and stability were also observed. In addition, an in-depth exploration was conducted into the underlying mechanisms behind the enhanced gas response due to rare earth element doping . This study provides strong theoretical support for the development of efficient acetate ester gas sensors, demonstrating broad prospects for their widespread application in the industrial field.

Enhancing the structural stability and strength of P2-type layered oxide sodium ion battery cathodes by Zn/F dual-site doping

Dawei Chen,Bin He,Shuai Jiang,Xilong Wang,Jie Song,Hao Chen,Dan Xiao,Qian Zhao,Yan Meng,Yujue Wang

Modifications through doping at both the anion site and the transition metal site within P2-type layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries typically exhibit a synergistic effect, which enhances the performance of these sodium-ion batteries. In this study, a prominent enhancement in the performance of P2-Na 0.67 Ni 0.15 Fe 0.20 Mn 0.65 O 2 (NFM) was achieved through a Zn/F dual-site doping strategy. The doped material P2-Na 0.67 Zn 0.05 Ni 0.15 Fe 0.20 Mn 0.60 O 1.95 F 0.05 (ZNFMF), prepared by co-precipitation followed by solid-state mixing and calcination method, exhibits superior cycling stability and rate performance in electrochemical tests. The doping of Zn/F optimizes the local electronic structure of the material, reduces the valence state of transition metal (TM) elements, enhances the binding energy between lattice oxygen and TM elements, shortens the TM-O bond length, effectively suppresses structural distortion, and improves the cycling performance and structural stability of the material. In-situ XRD and Raman also confirm the improved structural reversibility of the material during the cycling process. The nano-indentation test further confirms that the Young’s modulus and hardness of the ZNFMF is significantly improved compared to NFM during the cycling process. This research successfully improves the structural stability, electrochemical performance, and air stability of the sodium-ion battery cathode material through Zn/F dual-site doping, providing new ideas and methods for the further research and development of sodium-ion battery cathode materials.

Non-metallic surface-modified X-Cu (X = F, Cl, Br) metal catalysts for all-pH hydrogen evolution reaction with high performance

Yao Tang,Chunyan Fan,Zehao Zang,Yahui Cheng,Lanlan Li,Xiaofei Yu,Xiaojing Yang,Zunming Lu,Xinghua Zhang,Hui Liu

Producing hydrogen through water electrolysis represents a clean and sustainable solution that is crucial in addressing the energy crisis. Nonetheless, the slow process of water electrolysis leads to large different kinetics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under different pH solutions. Here, we designed surface modified metallic X-Cu catalysts (X = F, Cl, Br) with different non-metallic elements on nickel foam (NF) using an electrochemical deposition method, which realizes high performance for all-pH range. In 1.0 M KOH, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 media, F-Cu catalyst reaches 10 mA cm −2 with overpotentials of 56 mV, 110 mV, and 197 mV, respectively. Theoretical calculations disclose that the surface modification of F atom leads to redistribution of electrons, causing an upward shift of Cu’s d-band center and enhanced adsorption ability for H 2 O and H intermediates (H*). This work offers novel perspectives for designing Cu-based catalysts with high HER performance, making them applicable across all-pH conditions.

Novel NASICON-type Mn0.5Ti2(PO4)3@F-doped carbon composite with high electrochemical performance as anode materials for potassium-ion batteries

Shaoxiong Liu,Jing Dai,Xuexue Li,Jianjun Xia,Mingyang Xie,Zhifeng Huang,Li Liu

Mn 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 with a NASICON structural is used as an anode material in potassium-ion batteries due to its abundance of vacancies that can hold potassium ions . This characteristic not only contributes to its excellent stability but also results in a high specific capacity. However, the poor electrical conductivity of the polyanionic type structure limits the material's ability to fully utilize its capacity. In this paper, the conductivity and electrochemical stability of the Mn 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 anode material are enhanced through composite formation with an F-doped carbon layer. The introduction of F into the carbon matrix creates a large number of vacancy defects and F active sites. The vacancies enhance the transport of potassium ions on the Mn 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 material's surface, while the active sites exhibit strong electronegativity , improving the absorption of potassium ions. Therefore, the diffusion impedance of potassium ions is significantly reduced, leading to an increased diffusion rate of potassium ions. Attributing to the improved reaction kinetics, the Mn 0.5 Ti 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @F-doped carbon composite demonstrates a high specific capacity of 86 mA h g −1 at 10,000 mA g −1 when used as the anode for potassium-ion batteries. Even more, the specific capacity remains a capacity of 136 mA g −1 after 3000 cycles at 1000 mA h g −1 . This study enhances our comprehension of material design by investigating the alteration of carbon matrix to promote the electrochemical characteristics of materials.

Multiple approaches to assess the effects of F-53B, a Chinese PFOS alternative, on thyroid endocrine disruption at environmentally relevant concentrations

Mi Deng,Yongming Wu,Chao Xu,Yuanxiang Jin,Xiaoli He,Jinbao Wan,Xiaoling Yu,Hongmin Rao,Wenqing Tu

A Chinese perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) substitute frequently detected in the environment, 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B), has a similar structure to PFOS and it is proposed to cause thyroid dysfunction. To further confirm this hypothesis, the effects of F-53B on the thyroid endocrine system and underlying mechanisms were investigated in vitro and in vivo using rat pituitary GH3 cells and developing zebrafish, respectively. In GH3 cells, F-53B enhanced cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, indicative of thyroid receptor agonistic activity. In zebrafish larvae, F-53B exposure induced significant developmental inhibition and increased thyroxine (T 4 ) but not 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T 3 ) levels accompanied by a decrease in thyroglobulin (TG) protein and transcript levels of most genes involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Interestingly, T 4 levels remained significantly increased while TG protein and gene transcription levels were markedly upregulated after depuration. Molecular docking studies revealed that F-53B binds to transthyretin (TTR) by forming hydrogen bonds with Lys123 and Lys115, thereby interfering with thyroid hormone homeostasis. Our collective in vitro , in vivo and in silico studies provide novel evidence that F-53B disrupts the thyroid endocrine system at environmentally relevant concentrations, which cannot be recovered after depuration. Given the persistence of F-53B in the environment, the long-term consequences of thyroid hormone disruption by this chemical warrant further investigation.

Benzoxazinoids secreted by wheat root weaken the pathogenicity of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fabae by inhibiting linoleic acid and nucleotide metabolisms

Ma Guanglei,Hu Bijie,Yang Siyin,Cen Zixuan,Zheng Yiran,Dong Yan

Key message The regulatory action of BXs secreted by wheat on the pathogenicity of FOF causing Fusarium wilt in faba bean were analyzed. DIMBOA and MBOA weakened the pathogenicity of FOF. Abstract A large number of pathogenic bacteria in continuous cropping soil infect faba bean plants, leading to the occurrence of wilt disease, which restricts their production. Faba bean–wheat intercropping is often used to alleviate this disease. This study investigates the effect of benzoxazinoids (BXs) secreted by wheat root on the pathogenicity of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Fabae (FOF) and underlying molecular mechanisms. The effects of DIMBOA(2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazine-4-one) and MBOA(6-methoxybenzoxazolin-2-one) on the activity of cell-wall-degrading enzymes in FOF(cellulase, pectinase, amylase, and protease), FOF Toxin (fusaric acid, FA) content were investigated through indoor culture experiments. The effect of BXs on the metabolic level of FOF was analyzed by metabonomics to explore the ecological function of benzoxazines intercropping control of Fusarium wilt in faba bean. The results show that the Exogenous addition of DIMBOA and MBOA decreased the activity of plant-cell-wall-degrading enzymes and fusaric acid content and significantly weakened the pathogenicity of FOF. DIMBOA and MBOA significantly inhibited the pathogenicity of FOF, and metabolome analysis showed that DIMBOA and MBOA reduced the pathogenicity of FOF by down-regulating related pathways such as nucleotide metabolism and linoleic acid metabolism, thus effectively controlling the occurrence of Fusarium wilt in faba bean.

A nanoscale γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework loaded with eugenol (CMFE) for controlling F. graminearum on the wheat during harvest time

Luzhou Cai,Ling Li,Dong Li,Yanping Wu,Jinrong Bai,Kai Zhong,Hong Gao

The loss of grains in the production chain caused huge waste worldwide, and the control of plant pathogenic fungi during harvest time is a critical solution to mitigate the damage. Eugenol, an important component of clove oil ( Syzygium aromaticum L.), has antioxidant, antifungal, and other activities. In this study, the unstable eugenol was incorporated into the nanoscale γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CD-MOF), a cubic porous structure synthesized by vapor diffusion method. The investigation of morphologies, functional groups, crystalline structures and weight losing behaviors demonstrated the inclusion complex prepared from γ-CD-MOF and eugenol (CMFE). Compared with the γ-CD loaded with eugenol (CE), CMFE exhibited an improved loading rate with 4.06 % ( w/w ). And CMFE enhanced the stability of its inner eugenol against degradation by light and air. Moreover, the CMFE demonstrated a significant anti -F. graminearum activity both in the medium and on the wheat grains. The inhibition rate reached 83.8 % at 8 mg/mL in vitro , while the growth of the hyphae was effectively restrained at 4 mg/g in vivo . CMFE could damage the mycelial cell wall and trigger intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, thus exhibiting its anti- F. graminearum activity. Our results showed that the biocompatible CMFE would be an environment-friendly substitute to chemical fungicides for the prevention of fungal contamination caused by F. graminearum .

Xiaonan Zhang,Xiaocheng Zhuang,Manxin Chen,Jingrong Wang,Zhuoyu Liu,Daxiong Qiu,Jinna Wang,Yan Huang,Weina Li,Zhiwei Liu

Tannic acid and Fe 3+ were used in this study to create a polyphenol–metal network-based composite film for the preservation of Melaleuca bracteata essential oils. The inhibition rate of ABTS and DPPH free radicals reached more than 90 % at an essential oil concentration of 20 mg/mL. Additive quantities of 2.0 % essential oil nano-emulsion, 0.8 % tannic acid/Fe 3+ solution, 0.4 % microcrystalline cellulose, and 1 % chitosan were used to maximize the characteristics of the composite films. When combined with FTIR analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the composite film containing the essential oil emulsion had a more reticulated structure. The essential oil composite layer on mangoes increased the fruit shelf time to 12 days, decreased weight loss by 10.81±4.70 %, increased the amount of soluble solids by 2.03±0.31 %, and increased the amount of vitamin C by 2.18±0.09 %. A trustworthy technical method for the storage and transportation of agricultural goods is offered by this study. Graphical

Utilizing oxygen vacancies in cerium oxide to narrow the gap between d and f band centers for efficient alkaline water oxidation

Yong Jiang,Zhong Liang,Hao Fu,Guangtong Hai,Yaping Du

Rare earth oxides (REOs) hold a pivotal position in enhancing electrocatalytic performance, yet the comprehension of their underlying mechanisms poses significant challenges. In this study, REOs loaded with a ternary alloy, abundant in oxygen vacancies, were synthesized through a one-pot reduction method and exhibited remarkable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The interaction at the interface between Fe 0.3 NiCo and CeO 2 induced substantial lattice distortion and modulated the oxygen vacancy concentration within the REOs. A unique electron transport channel, incorporating transition metal (3d) -oxygen vacancy (Vo) -rare earth (4 f) elements, was constructed at the interface, significantly boosting the OER activity of NiCo-CeO 2 . Notably, a current density of 10 mA cm −2 was achieved at a low overpotential of 151 mV. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that the interplay between the alloy and REOs regulated the oxygen vacancy concentration of the latter. In-situ attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) further confirmed that REOs facilitated the adsorption of O 2 /-OH, thereby enhancing OER activity. Theoretical calculations also indicated that oxygen vacancies effectively shifted the d and f band centers near the Fermi level, promoting d-f electron exchange and ensuring efficient electron transfer. This study offers a novel perspective for the development of efficient RE-based catalysts.

Cavitation-enhanced aroma and browning: A multiscale study of star anise (Illicium verum Hook. f.) pretreated by ultrasound and electrolyzed water

Silei Zhang,Qingbo Huang,Xiangmin Kuang,Chaofan Guo,Yongli Jiang,Fujie Zhang,Daihong Pan,Ming Du,Sakamon Devahastin,Junjie Yi

Conventional pretreatments of star anise ( Illicium verum Hook. f.) often result in uneven color development, long drying duration and substantial aroma losses, hence limiting final product quality and market value. To address these issues, the present study hypothesized that ultrasound-assisted electrolyzed water thawing (UEWT) as pretreatment prior to drying could accelerate drying and enrich flavor of star anise by inducing appropriate structural and biochemical changes. The effects of UEWT were compared with those of deionized water thawing (DWT), electrolyzed water thawing (EWT), ultrasound-assisted deionized water thawing (UDWT), and hot water blanching (HWB), with a focus on drying kinetics, microstructure, relevant enzyme activities, antioxidant activities and volatiles composition of star anise were evaluated. UEWT reduced drying time to 8 h, with the highest drying rate (0.75 kg/(kg·h)), free water content (48 %) and oil-associated NMR signal (23 %). Enhanced cell disruption enhanced moisture migration and volatiles release, while elevated PPO and POD activities intensified desirable coloration ( a*  = 27.3; Δ E  = 26.8); antioxidants retention was nevertheless compromised (phenolics 45.94 mg GAE/g; flavonoids 2.35 mg GAE/g). UEWT also resulted in the highest content of trans -anethole (1100.40 μg/kg) and formation of α-terpineol, both of which are key contributor to characteristic aroma of star anise. These findings demonstrate that UEWT effectively balances drying rate, color formation, and aroma retention, offering a practical pretreatment for quality-oriented drying of spice fruits. Future studies should optimize ultrasonic parameters and evaluate industrial-scale integration for continuous spice processing.
