Anode modification is an effective strategy for enhancing the electrochemical performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC). However, the impacts of the modified materials on anode biofilm development during MFC operation have been less studied. We prepared a novel PDA-Fe 3 O 4 -CF composite anode by coating original carbon felt anode (CF) with polydopamine (PDA) and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The composite anode material was characterized by excellent hydrophilicity and electrical conductivity, and the anodic biofilm exhibited fast start-up, higher biomass, and more uniform biofilm layer after MFC operation. The MFC reactor assembled with the composite anode achieved a maximum power density of 608 mW m −2 and an output voltage of 586 mV, which were 316.4% and 72.4% higher than the MFC with the original CF anode, respectively. Microbial community analysis indicated that the modified anode biofilm had a higher relative abundance of exoelectrogen species in comparison to the unmodified anode. The PICRUSt data revealed that the anodic materials may affect the bioelectrochemical performance of the biofilm by influencing the expression levels of key enzyme genes involved in biofilm extracellular polymer (EPS) secretion and extracellular electron transfer (EET). The growth of the anodic biofilm would exert positive or negative influences on the efficiency of electricity production and electron transfer of the MFCs at different operating stages. This work expands the knowledge of the role that anodic materials play in the development and electrochemical performance of anodic biofilm in MFCs.

A novel composite hydrogel prepared from polyacrylamide (PAM), polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDA@MMT), graphene and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), loaded with Ag NPs, was prepared for the catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) using in situ reduction. HPC significantly enhanced the dispersion of PDA@MMT within the hydrogel, endowing the hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties, with stress and strain of 1773 kPa and 4005 %, and elastic modulus and toughness of 43.4 kPa and 29.54 MJ/m 3 , respectively. The introduction of graphene (GN) increased the rate of electron transfer during the catalytic process and significantly improved the catalytic efficiency, with catalytic rate constants of 1.360 and 0.803 min −1 for MB and CR at 20 °C, respectively. The hydrogels were endowed with excellent antimicrobial properties due to the introduction of Ag NPs. In the future, this hydrogel is expected to play an important role in environmental pollution control.

In this paper, PVDF-g-PNIPAAm/GEP-PDA@ZnO composite membranes that can undergo light-induced structural response and photodegradation to achieve self-cleaning have been designed and applied to the separation and purification of dye wastewater. The membranes were prepared by blending graphene (GPE)-polydopamine (PDA)-coated zinc oxide (ZnO) core–shell particles into the PVDF-g-PNIPAAm matrix with a non-solvent induced phase separation technique. The GPE and ZnO are tightly bonded by highly adhesive PDA to form a “strawberry-like” core–shell structure. GPE absorbs light energy and converts it into heat, resulting in changes in PNIPAAm chain segments to expand the pore size for self-cleaning. While the membrane is warming up, GPE further promotes the activation of active groups on the surface of PDA@ZnO at high temperature, resulting in unique and excellent photothermal catalytic activity. As a result, the membrane achieves both self-cleaning and pollutant degradation, which results in an FRR of 99.6% after light cleaning. Moreover, the GPE-PDA@ZnO nanoparticle-modified PVDF-g-PNIPAAm membranes exhibit excellent cycling stability with a degradation flux recovery rate of more than 97% even after multiple UV cleaning. Thus, PVDF-g-PNIPAAm/GPE-PDA@ZnO composite membranes extend the versatility of PVDF-based membranes and show extraordinary potential for application in wastewater treatment.

Tumor relapse and cancerometastasis frequently occur post tumor treatments, leading to poor prognosis with high mortality. Unfortunately, therapy-exacerbated inflammation is among the chief causes of poor prognosis, especially for photothermal therapy (PTT). To overcome this mismatch between therapy and prognosis, we design a built-in Pt/polydopamine(PDA) nanoconstruction (PNP) that makes the anti-inflammation potency and therapy outcome positively inter-linked by virtue of their temperature dependency. PDA not only works as the PTT agent but also provides a self-reductive nano-substrate (∼150 nm) for the in-situ generation of ultrasmall Pt nanodots (∼4 nm). The embedding of Pt nanodots affects insignificantly the PTT potency of PDA while importing the enzyme-like ROS-scavenging function to defend inflammation in a therapy-enhanced manner. Specifically, PNP exhibits the increasing anti-inflammation effect with the elevated temperature caused by PTT, which enables the anti-inflammation pathway to match perfectly PTT modality. In vivo results indicate that PNP leads to better antitumor performance and effective inhibition of tumor relapse and cancerometastasis. This study provides new ideas for systematical tumor treatments with improved prognosis by coordinating anti-inflammation and antitumor actions harmoniously.

Paper emerges as an ideal substrate for flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors (PRSs) due to its inherent flexibility, cost-effectiveness, renewability, and lightweight properties. However, the intrinsic hydrophilicity of original paper poses substantial challenges for practical sensor applications. Herein, we coated Ti 3 C 2 T x @ZIF-8@PDA@AgNPs (TZPA) and PDMS/CaCO 3 on the surface of paper by facile spray-coating technique to prepare paper-based superhydrophobic flexible PRSs. By employing a bioinspired micro-cracked architecture derived from crustacean sensory systems, the sensor exhibited exceptional sensing properties: three linear sensitivity regions (S 1 = 1.36 kPa −1 , 0–3 kPa; S 2 = 8.71 kPa −1 , 3–10 kPa; S 3 = 0.81 kPa −1 , 10–30 kPa), rapid response/recovery times (98.1/97.9 ms), and stable operation over 500 cycles. The superhydrophobic PDMS/CaCO 3 layer, with its micro-nano structure and low surface energy, imparted the paper-based sensor with excellent waterproofing (water contact angle ∼151.1° and water sliding angle ∼9°), self-cleaning, and synergistic antibacterial properties when combined with the TZPA layer. Finally, the fabricated paper-based PRS demonstrated real-time detection capabilities for human bodily motions (including large/small movements) even under high-moisture conditions and underwater. Presented here is an environmentally friendly and simple method for fabricating superhydrophobic paper-based PRSs which have significant potential in the fields of wearable electronics, healthcare surveillance and human–computer interaction, even in aqueous environments.

In recent years, piezoelectric–photocatalytic materials have attracted significant attention due to their potential to address environmental pollution issues in a straightforward, effective and sustainable manner. In this paper, Ag nanoparticles are successfully immobilized on the surface of ZnO, and a multifunctional PVDF-based water treatment membrane with piezoelectric–photocatalytic performance is constructed for the first time by combining the prepared ZnO@PDA-Ag composite nano-photocatalysts with the PVDF-g-IL piezoelectric matrix. The distinctive structure of ZnO@PDA-Ag enhances charge separation in the photocatalytic process, effectively promoting the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. The grafting IL onto PVDF chain segments induces a transformation of the polar crystalline phases within the PVDF. The synergistic effect of both results in significant improvements to the membrane’s porosity, increasing the permeate flux. The PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane demonstrates a high degree of efficiency in the removal of various dyes with an approximate removal efficiency of 100%. Furthermore, the PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane displays piezoelectric polarization, resulting in the formation of a built-in electric field when exposed to ultrasound, which enhances electron–hole separation and transfer efficiency. The membrane is capable of degrading approximately 98% of the dye within a 90-min degradation experiment. Finally, the PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane exhibits excellent mechanical stability even after multiple self-cleaning and recycling cycles.

An in vitro intestinal absorption model combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-photo diode array-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-PDA-MS) was used for preliminary screening of potential active ingredients from complex multi-component traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) system. Oral administration is one of the main administration methods for TCMs. Only the ingredients that could be absorbed have the opportunity to play a role. Thus, these were defined as potential active ingredients. Studying of intestinal absorption can provide a theoretical basis for the mechanism of TCMs. The Caco-2 cell model, the everted rat gut sac model, and the Ussing chamber model were established for TCMs. The degree of anastomosis between the in vitro intestinal model and the actual intestinal absorption of TCMs were evaluated by the gavage method in rats. The Ussing chamber model was best fit for oral experiments in rats and was selected as the research means to preliminarily screen potential active ingredients from eight TCMs, including Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, Astragalus propinquus Schischkin, Plantago asiatica L , Fallopia multiflora (Thunb.) Harald, Epimedium brevicornu Maxim, Moutan Cortex , Citrus reticulata Blanco , and Panax notoginseng (Burkill) F. H. Chen ex C. H. Chow. A total of 44 components were absorbed and screened as the potential active ingredients from the 80 components identified in eight TCMs by HPLC-PDA-MS.

The coexistence of cationic and anionic dyes in wastewater necessitates the development of amphoteric adsorbents. Herein, amphoteric hydrogel microspheres SA-S@PDA-H was successfully fabricated for their simultaneous removal. The microspheres were synthesized by crosslinking sodium alginate (SA) with Ca²⁺, followed by coating with polydopamine (PDA) and stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC). The microspheres prepared through acid treatment to replace STAC was labeled SA-S@PDA-H, endowing the microspheres with enhanced adsorption capacity. FT-IR, SEM, zeta potential was utilized to characterize the structure and morphology of SA-S@PDA-H. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of SA-S@PDA-H for cationic and anionic dyes was investigated in depth. The results show SA-S@PDA-H exhibit 127.3 % of swelling ratio. The adsorption of SA-S@PDA-H for MB and MO reaches equilibrium at about 300 min followed by PSO model. The adsorption process of SA-S@PDA-H for MB and MO followed Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich model, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity displayed 869.1 mg/g at 45°C and 730.9 mg/g at 15°C, for MB and MO, respectively. MB adsorption increased with higher temperature and pH, while MO adsorption increased with lower temperature and pH. Adsorption of both dyes decreased at high ionic strength, and Cu 2 + and Fe 3+ had a significant inhibitory for MB than K + , while the inhibitory effects of SO 4 2- or CO 3 2- is more obvious for MO than Cl - . SA-S@PDA-H exhibited excellent adsorption performance for mixed cationic and anionic dyes through synergistic effects including electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking and micropore filling. The microspheres maintained over 80 % removal efficiency after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles.

Membrane fouling in spiral-wound nanofiltration is intensified by coexisting microorganisms, organic matter, and metal ions in real wastewaters, yet most mitigation strategies focus on membrane surface modification while overlooking the role of feed spacers in regulating in-channel fouling. In this study, silver nanoparticle-polydopamine (Ag-PDA) modified spacers were prepared on commercial polypropylene spacers via a two-step coating process. Optimized spacers exhibited AgNP size of ~40 nm at surface loading of 0.99 wt%, reduced contact angle from 87° to 72°, and achieved > 99.99% antibacterial efficiency. Across microbial, organic, and inorganic fouling systems, permeate flux improved by 24–89% with concurrent rejection enhancements, and AgNP leaching remained below 0.1%. In municipal, micro-polluted source, and electroplating wastewaters, the modified spacers delivered 80–92% flux recovery and 91–94% reductions in membrane-surface bacterial counts. These results establish Ag-PDA modified spacers as a robust, cost-effective, and environmentally sound antifouling strategy for spiral-wound nanofiltration under complex real water conditions.

Ice accumulation on outdoor engineering surfaces threatens operational safety in cold and humid environments, creating a need for durable coatings that combine passive anti-icing with active de-icing. Photothermal superhydrophobic coatings are promising, but their practical use is often constrained by fluorinated modifiers, weak coating adhesion, and the difficulty of achieving controllable and durable hierarchical surface structures. Here, we report a fluorine-free photothermal superhydrophobic PDA@GO/PDMS coating with laser-induced hierarchical micro/nanostructures. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) provides a fluorine-free low-surface-energy matrix, while polydopamine-modified graphene oxide (PDA@GO) acts as an interfacially compatible photothermal component. Laser etching removes the resin-rich surface layer and generates hierarchical micro/nanostructures. These structures promote a low-adhesion Cassie–Baxter wetting state and create light-trapping microcavities that enhance multiple scattering and photothermal absorption. After optimizing the laser frequency, scanning speed, and scan repetition, the coating achieves a water contact angle of approximately 164° and a sliding angle below 5°. The laser-induced hierarchical structure prolongs droplet freezing to approximately 712 s and suppresses ice accretion under freezing rain conditions. Under 1 sun irradiation at −15 °C, the laser-etched coating heats to 12.3 °C within 300 s, and its efficient photothermal response combined with low ice adhesion enables rapid photothermal de-icing. The coating also maintains water repellency after mechanical damage, chemical exposure, UV aging, outdoor weathering, and repeated frosting/defrosting cycles, while showing applicability to various substrates and contaminated environments. This work demonstrates a durable fluorine-free strategy for developing laser-structured PDA@GO/PDMS coatings for photothermal anti-icing and de-icing applications.

Conductive polymer composite scaffold displayed great advantages in nerve repair due to it could highly simulate the electrical microenvironment of natural tissues. However, the poor interfacial adhesion and the discrete distribution of conductive fillers in polymer matrix weaken its conductivity. Herein, Polydopamine (PDA) was grown in situ on PLLA microspheres, and then loaded with MXene nanosheets. Subsequently, a conductive MXene/PDA/PLLA conduit was fabricated by laser additive manufacture. During this processing, a three-dimensional continuous conductive network was constructed on the conduit utilizing its shearing-free properties. Meanwhile, PDA could form covalent and hydrogen bonds with MXene and PLLA through catechol, amino and imino groups, enhancing their interfacial compatibility. Additionally, PDA could generate photothermal for antibacterial under near-infrared radiation. DFT calculations proved the existence of favorable interfacial interactions between PDA and MXene and PLLA. Results showed that MXene was uniformly wrapped around the PLLA, forming a three-dimensional continuous conductive network in the conduit. At 7.5 wt% MXene, the permeation threshold and conductivity reach 1.81 % and 4.8 S/m, respectively. The enhanced current promoted cell nerve differentiation, as evidenced by a 2.4-fold upregulation of Nestin and a 4.3-fold increase in Ca 2 + influx. Besides, the conduit could effectively kill S. aureus and E. coli due to its excellent photothermal effect.

In order to solve the problem of poor thermal conductivity of polymer-based radiation shielding composite materials, h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 hybrid powders were prepared by combining h-BN with high thermal conductivity and PbWO 4 with γ shielding. With the assistance of polydopamine, PbWO 4 particles were synthesized in situ on the h-BN surface. The effects of h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 on thermal conductivity, γ-ray shielding, and mechanical properties of chloroprene rubber were studied. The results showed that the hybrid particles had better dispersibility than the pure mixing of h-BN and PbWO 4 in chloroprene rubber and significantly improved the thermal conductivity gamma-ray shielding performance and mechanical properties of CR composites. When the filler content of the hybrid powder reaches 40 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the composite is about 3.16 times that of the pure CR. The γ shielding rates at 86.5 KeV and 105.3 KeV photon energies increase by 14.14% and 17.61% compared with the pure CR. Compared with pure CR, the tensile strength of the composites increased by 4.79 MPa, and the elongation at break decreased slightly. These were because h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 shows had an excellent synergistic effect in CR substrate. The new kind of CR/h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 composite can be used for thermal management and gamma shielding.
