To address the issue of water formation leading to the collapse of catalyst structure and diminished catalytic activity during the synthesis of indole via reaction of ethylene glycol and aniline, a series of hydrophobic Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts have been engineered through surface chemical modification. Herein, alkyltriethoxysilane and alkyl phosphonic acid were employed as modifiers to decorate the surface of Pt/Al 2 O 3 , preparing hydrophobic catalyst (Pt/Al 2 O 3 -R), and the quantity of these hydrophobic reagents were selectively regulated to ascertain the catalyst with optimal efficiency. In the course of this procedure, the catalyst Pt/Al 2 O 3 -0.03SiC 12 , which exhibited a water contact angle of 112° and an ethylene glycol contact angle of 62°, significantly enhanced the yield of indole to 72%. It has been established that variations in the alkyl chain length impact the hydrophobicity and wettability of ethylene glycol, collectively influencing the catalytic efficiency. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed successful integration of the chemical modifier onto the Al 2 O 3 surface via Si-O bonds. Furthermore, XRD, TEM, and BET results indicate that although the surface hydrophobic modification has a certain impact on the metal-active center, whereas the hydrophobic microenvironment is highly effective for the conversion of ethylene glycol to indole. DFT calculations further supported this finding, showing reduced water adsorption energy on the modified Pt/Al 2 O 3 surface. This study highlights the role of alkyl chains in modulating hydrophobicity and substrate wettability in the context of indole synthesis, offering insights into the design of catalysts for other dehydration reactions.

The practical application of fuel cell vehicles is hindered by poor performance and durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), especially at low Pt loading and low relative humidity conditions, owing to limited proton transport properties and electrochemical reaction surface areas of conventional electrode design. This study proposes a patterned design with ordered ionomer micropillars as an alternative electrode structure to enhance the performance and durability of PEMFCs with low Pt loading (0.1 mg cm −2 ) across a wide range of humidities. Compared to conventional electrodes, the patterned electrodes achieved up to 29% peak power density improvement under low-humidity (50% relative humidity) conditions. Pore-scale multiphysics modeling demonstrated that the ionomer micropillars inside the patterned electrodes transform the distorted transport pathways of conventional, randomly distributed catalyst layers into ordered, short-range channels for rapid oxygen and proton delivery, which significantly enhances the oxygen reduction reaction rate. Moreover, the patterned electrodes exhibited improved durability, showing lower performance loss, compared to conventional electrodes, after accelerated stress testing across a wide range of humidities. Strategic redesign of the ionomer micropillars demonstrated that the H1.8W0.38 electrode (with a micropillar height of 1.8 μm and width of 0.38 μm), with its increased penetration depth and appropriately adjusted width, achieves optimal performance by minimizing oxygen and proton transport resistances by 6% and 14%, respectively, compared to the pre-optimization (H1.5W0.38) electrode, under low-humidity (50% relative humidity) conditions. The proposed patterned electrode architecture offers a promising approach for advancing the development of high-performance, cost-effective, and durable fuel cells.

Multiferroic materials are capable for achieving mutual coupling between multiple physical fields, including mechanics, electronics and magnetism. However, materials with high magnetoelectric output under low magnetic fields are of great significance in practical applications, which is the dominate purpose of this study. Herein, 2.5 %Sm:PMN-PT–(Ni 0.8 Zn 0.2 ) 0.6 Co 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 multiferroics had been prepared by solid-state method. For 0–3 types, the X-ray diffraction results demonstrate the presence of perovskite and spinel phases, yet the pyrochlore phase emerges when the molar ratio of ferrite is relatively high, which is ascribed to the reduction of the Pb 2+ concentration in the sintering atmosphere. Due to ionic diffusion and small strains between the two ferro-phases, the diffraction angle of the spinel phase varies accordingly. Scanning electron microscope images indicate the interlaced distribution of the two ferro-phase grains. Many magnetic parameters increase with ferrite molar ratio increasing, e.g., saturation magnetization ( M s ), coercivity, remanent magnetization, theoretical saturation magnetization ( M s -the ), and magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant, etc. The observed increase in M s /M s -the with ferrite molar ratio is attributed to the attenuated hindering of magnetization caused by the nonmagnetic ferroelectric grains. The ferroelectric grains can absorb microscopic strain and hinder the magnetic domains rotation, which reduce the magnetostrictive strain and sensitivity, and meanwhile increase the magnetic field required to reach the maximum strain sensitivity, respectively. For 2-2 tri-layer types, the magnetoelectric coefficient reaches 13.21 [mV/(cm·Oe)] at a low DC magnetic field of 200 Oe when the AC magnetic field of 10 mOe at 1 kHz, indicating its abilities for current-to-voltage conversion applications. This work investigates the diverse physical properties of an facile PMN-PT–CoFe 2 O 4 -based ceramic composite, and demonstrates its potential application in magnetic-to-electrical energy conversion.

The anode Pt catalyst of a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is susceptible to poisoning by trace amounts of CO in hydrogen, which restricts its large-scale commercialisation. Therefore, developing PEMFC catalysts with CO tolerance is crucial as it would reduce the requirement for hydrogen purity. In this study, we present a CO-tolerant catalyst for the PEMFC anode synthesised by loading Pt onto a polyaniline-modified conductive carbon composite support (Pt/C-PANI). The results showed that the catalyst containing 5% PANI in the composite support (Pt/C-PANI-5) exhibited optimal hydrogen oxidation reaction activity and CO tolerance. Electrochemical tests showed that the current drop of Pt/C-PANI-5 was 6.8%, compared to 20% and 12% for Pt/C-sys and commercial PtRu/C catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, results of the single-cell test confirmed improved CO tolerance. These findings provide a potential solution for developing cost-effective fuel cell catalysts with improved CO tolerance.

Dual-mode imaging combining photoacoustic and ultrasound modalities holds great promise for comprehensive tissue characterization. In traditional dual-mode imaging systems, however, the opaque ultrasound transducers are integrated in complex optical and ultrasound paths, leading to compromises in imaging efficiency and sensitivity. To address these challenges, we design and produce highly transparent Pb(Mg,Nb)O 3 PbTiO 3 ceramics with exceptional transparency of 68%, alongside a remarkable ultrahigh piezoelectric d 33 of 1500 pC/N. Leveraging this material, we fabricate a high-sensitivity transparent piezoelectric ultrasound transducer (TPUT) with a center frequency of 16 MHz and a bandwidth of 30%, which seamlessly integrating ultrasound and photoacoustic capabilities into one system to achieve simultaneous photoacoustic/ultrasound dual-mode imaging, showcasing a remarkable sensitivity for deep-tissue detection ( e.g. , 7.5 mm thick chicken breast meat). Additionally, in vivo photoacoustic imaging of subcutaneous microvasculature in a mouse ear was successfully achieved via 28 MHz TPUT. Our innovation not only advances imaging performance but also offers a cost-effective solution, paving the way for transformative biomedical imaging applications.

The hydrodenitrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles over noble metals has fundamental importance for energy and environmental science. To develop more efficient catalyst, mechanistic investigation has been conducted with a method combining in situ Fourier transformation infrared experiments and density functional theory calculations in this work. The in situ experiments indicate flatly adsorbed pyridine molecules convert to pyridinium and α -pyridyl species at higher temperature on metallic Pt of Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts. Pyridine hydrogenation distinctly takes place at 150 °C with the appearance of methylene stretching vibrations, and a stepwise mechanism is identified as the temperature further increases. The adsorption, hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of pyridine on Pt are studied in detail by theoretical calculations. In line with these findings, the geometry optimization confirms pyridine preferentially adsorbs on Pt(111) and Pt(211) both in a parallel configuration. Based on the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism, the results show successive hydrogenation markedly lowers the energy barrier for subsequent hydrogenolysis. The C N bond cleavage occurs via nucleophilic attack of pentahydropyridine, rather than piperidine, which determines the reaction products, including piperidine, n -pentylamine and n -pentane. The comparative study reveals both hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis are kinetically and thermodynamically more competitive on Pt(211) than Pt(111). Especially for hydrogenolysis, the coordinatively unsaturated Pt step atoms play an essential role in C N bond cleavage. Thus, hydrogenolysis is more geometric‒dependent than hydrogenation. This provides instructive information for the design of catalysts with adjustable product selectivity.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are appealing to resolve the environmental and energy issues but are still heavily inhibited by the dilemma of fabricating effective and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, highly open Pt3Cu nanoframes and one-dimensional, hollow titanium nitride architectures are both successfully explored and implemented as the new system to replace the traditional Pt–carbon motif. The ORR performance of the obtained electrocatalyst shows specific and mass activities of 5.32 mA cm–2 and 2.43 A mgPt–1, respectively, which are 14.4 and 11.6 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. Notably, the novel catalyst also exhibits high stability and a much slower performance degradation than that of the benchmarked Pt3Cu/C with the same durability testing procedures. The comprehensive data confirm that the new type of catalyst possesses a high charge transfer during the ORR process, and the unique structure and synergistic effects between anchored Pt and the support mainly contributes to the high stability. This work provides a strategic method for designing an effective ORR electrocatalyst with desirable stability.

Cocatalysts for H 2 production are often made from noble metals, which are expensive and rare. Cocatalysts made from cheap and abundant elements are therefore highly desirable for economically viable H 2 production. Here, we demonstrate that amorphous transitional metal borides (TMBs)—made from abundant materials and costing less than 0.1% of the price of Pt cocatalysts—are effective substitutes for Pt-based cocatalysts and result in superior H 2 production via water-splitting under visible light irradiation. Under visible-light driven photocatalytic water-splitting, using TMBs as cocatalysts for nanostructured NiCoB/CdS composites achieved an extraordinary H 2 production of 144.8 mmol h −1 g −1 , up to 36 times greater than that observed when using CdS alone. The apparent quantum efficiency was measured as 97.42% at 500 nm, which is the highest value reported for CdS photocatalysts. The hydrogen atom adsorption energy (ΔE(H)) and hydrogen molecule adsorption energy (ΔE(H 2 )) of NiB, NiCoB and Pt have been calculated for the first time. Compared with Pt cocatalyst, amorphous TMBs cocatalysts more readily adsorb hydrogen protons and desorb molecular hydrogen during the photocatalytic process. Superior performance of TMBs as cocatalyst, much better than Pt, can be attributed to its powerful trapping electrons ability and highly adsorption of protons. These findings provide a straightforward and effective route to produce cheap and efficient cocatalysts for large-scale water splitting.

The reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction serves as a highly flexible and critical pathway for converting CO 2 into CO, with Pt-based catalysts having been widely investigated. Here, a series of platinum-rare earth (RE) subnanometric bimetallic clusters (SBCs) were successfully prepared on carbon support by the potassium vapor reduction method. Their structure and electronic properties, along with catalytic performance, were systematically characterized and evaluated. The Pt-RE SBC catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity, maintaining CO selectivity above 95% at high CO 2 conversion levels and demonstrating stable operation over 100 h at 600 °C. Furthermore, the influence of different supports (carbon black and CeO 2 ) on the catalytic performance was compared. It was found that Pt-Sc SBCs supported on the carbon exhibited better dispersion, smaller particle size, and superior catalytic performance relative to the CeO 2 supported counterpart. This study provides new insights into the design of highly efficient and stable RWGS catalysts, highlighting the key role of the Pt-RE SBC interface synergistic effect and support selection, which is of great significance for the resource utilization of CO 2 .

Combining noble metal nanoparticles with electron acceptors, such as semiconductors or non-plasmonic metals, significantly enhances photocatalytic performance. However, optimizing multi-material combinations for superior catalytic efficiency remains challenging. In this study, we present a method for synthesizing composite structures by reducing Cu 2+ ions with hydrazine hydrate, forming gold nanorods (AuNRs) decorated with dendritic Cu 2 O shells. The influence of CTAB on Cu 2 O deposition sites was investigated, and ternary composite nanoparticles were further synthesized by incorporating Pd or Pt into the AuNR-Cu 2 O system (AuNR@Pd(Pt)-Cu 2 O). The photocatalytic performance of these nanostructures was evaluated by catalyzing methyl orange (MO) under light irradiation. Results showed that AuNR@Pt-Cu 2 O nanoparticles exhibited catalytic performance 35.7 times higher than that of pure Cu 2 O nanoparticles. This enhancement is attributed to efficient charge transfer and photothermal effects facilitated by the ternary structure. These findings provide valuable insights into plasmonic heterostructure design and open new avenues for developing high-performance photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

In photocatalytic systems, the coupling of redox reactions plays a significant role in determining overall catalytic performance. However, current research predominantly focuses on individual half-reactions while neglecting the integrated redox system. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient coupling system combining ethylene glycol (EG) oxidation with water reduction for hydrogen evolution using single-atom Pt/TiO 2 catalyst. The system simultaneously drives two-electron oxidation of EG to value-added glycolaldehyde and two-electron reduction of water to H 2 , achieving remarkable photocatalytic performance with glycolaldehyde and hydrogen production rates of 3852 μmol g cat −1 h −1 and 3524 μmol g cat −1 h −1 , respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal that single-atom Pt sites regulate the interfacial charge distribution of TiO 2 , thereby facilitating EG oxidation and promoting electron accumulation on adjacent Ti sites for H 2 O reduction to hydrogen. This work not only provides fundamental insights into the design principles of coupled redox systems but also establishes a theoretical framework for single-atom catalysts in synergistic photocatalytic reactions. The catalytic conversion of CO 2 into value-added chemicals via the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction represents a significant pathway for mitigating climate change and enabling sustainable carbon utilization. However, Pt-based catalysts, despite their superior H 2 activation ability, often suffer from inadequate CO selectivity and durability under high-temperature conditions, primarily due to excessive CO adsorption at low-coordinated Pt edge sites. Herein, we present a sulfur (S)-mediated targeted passivation strategy to engineer Pt-CeO 2 catalysts with atomically tailored active sites, effectively addressing the critical activity-stability-selectivity trade-off. The incorporation of S into CeO 2 support induced optimized electronic modulation, as evidenced by in situ/ex situ characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which weakened *CO adsorption strength and suppressed the methanation pathway. The optimized Pt-S-CeO 2 catalyst exhibits remarkable performance at 600 °C: CO selectivity >95%, CO production rate of 8.8×10 −5 mol g cat −1 s −1 , and <10% activity loss over 250 h. On the other hand, this work establishes a framework for targeted dopant-mediated site engineering in heterogeneous catalysis, offering a generalizable route to reconcile conflicting performance in CO 2 hydrogenation systems and beyond.
