Fe2O3–ZrO2catalysts with different morphologies (nanoplates (HZNPs), nanorods (HZNRs), nanocubes (HZNCs), and nanotubes (HZNTs)) were prepared by a hydrothermal method to investigate the effect of the morphology on the catalytic performance in the Fenton-like reaction for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation. The Fe2O3–ZrO2catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The H2O2adsorption and the Fe2+density sites on the Fe2O3–ZrO2catalysts had a close relationship with the morphologies and exhibited an important effect on the ·OH formation in the Fenton-like reaction. Free ·OH radicals were the main oxidative species in the reaction, and the normalized ·OH concentration per surface area of the catalysts was 4.52, 2.24, 2.20, and 0.37 μmol/m2for HZNPs, HZNRs, HZNCs, and HZNTs, respectively. The Fe2O3–ZrO2catalysts with different morphologies showed good catalytic performance, and the order of SMT degradation was HZNPs > HZNRs > HZNCs > HZNTs. Total SMT removal was achieved in the Fenton-like reaction over HZNPs at pH 3.0 and 45 °C after 240 min.Keywords:Fenton-like reaction;hematite;structure-dependent reactivity;ZrO2;sulfamethazine

Heterostructured materials hold great potential for achieving superior mechanical properties. However, the majority of current studies on heterostructured ceramics have predominantly focused on layered systems. Here, we report a new 3YSZ-(ZrO 2 -SiO 2 ) dual-heterostructured ceramic composites (DHCCs) comprising 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) domains and ZrO 2 -SiO 2 domains. The DHCCs exhibited a dual-level hierarchical structure. Specifically, the 3YSZ domain consisted of submicron ZrO 2 grains, while the ZrO 2 -SiO 2 domain was composed of ZrO 2 nanograins dispersed within an amorphous SiO 2 matrix. To fabricate the DHCCs, hybrid powders were first synthesized by a chemical co-precipitation method, followed by sintering to produce dense DHCCs. The phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the DHCCs were characterized. Compared with the homogeneously structured ZrO 2 -SiO 2 ceramic, the DHCCs exhibited an 85.6% increase in strength and a 47.2% improvement in fracture toughness. Finally, the underlying strengthening and toughening mechanisms of the DHCCs were elucidated. These findings demonstrate that architecting dual-heterogeneous structures represents an effective strategy for achieving robust mechanical properties.

Advanced hollow ceramic fiber materials with excellent thermal insulation and lightweight characteristics are urgently needed in rapidly developing areas such as aerospace. However, creating such hollow ceramic fiber materials has proven to be extremely challenging for current synthetic techniques. Here, we introduce a facile approach for the production of hollow yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fiber felts through sol–gel solution centrifugal spinning. It is found that the hollow structure can be effectively controlled by adjusting the mass ratios of inorganic salts and PVP, as well as the calcination temperatures. The resulting hollow YSZ felts exhibit low density (38 mg cm − 3 ), robust tensile strength (439.56±24.23 kPa), significant stretchability (>10 %), exceptional oxidation and high-temperature resistance, refractory properties, and outstanding thermal insulation characteristics (0.019 W m −1 K −1 at room temperature and 0.103 W m −1 K −1 at 1000℃). The successful synthesis of such fascinating materials may provide new insights into the design and development of hollow ceramic fibers.

To address the weak infrared extinction capability of silica aerogel composites at high temperatures, this study introduces an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fibrous membrane fabricated by electrospinning to suppress infrared radiation. This strategy effectively overcomes the limitation of weak infrared extinction at elevated temperatures and enhances the thermal insulation performance of the silica aerogel composites. After heat treatment at 900 °C, the as-prepared YSZ fibrous membrane exhibits a tetragonal crystalline phase, an average fiber diameter of 880 nm, and an infrared reflectance of 58%. By Incorporating three layers of the YSZ fibrous membrane into the silica aerogel composite, a thermal conductivity of 0.082 W/(m·K) is achieved at 1000 °C, corresponding to a 20.38% improvement in thermal insulation performance. The YSZ fibrous membrane effectively suppresses radiative heat transfer within the material, demonstrating great potential for practical applications.

CO2 reduction to light olefins is an important pathway toward carbon neutrality, but it is hindered by low thermodynamic conversion and the inherent trade-off between activity and selectivity. To address this challenge, a bifunctional catalyst consisting of Cu single atoms anchored on ZrO2 and SAPO-34 (Cu1/ZrO2-SAPO-34) was developed. This catalyst achieves 84.3% light olefin selectivity and 15.0% CO2 conversion, with stable performance maintained over 100 hours. In this catalyst, Cu single atoms, ZrO2, and SAPO-34 exhibit clear division of labor and synergy, responsible for CO2 activation, active site stabilization, and olefin selectivity control, respectively. Mechanistic investigations using in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations demonstrate that the interaction between Cu single atoms and ZrO2 facilitates the further hydrogenation of formate intermediates to methoxy species, while reducing the energy barrier for methoxy hydrogenation to methanol, thus ensuring high light olefin selectivity in subsequent conversion over SAPO-34. This work provides new insights for CO2 conversion and the design and application of single-atom catalysts in tandem catalytic reactions.

Porous Ca2Mg2Al28O46(C2M2A14) ceramics are highly competitive candidates in the field of critical metal filtration due to their attractive non-metallic-inclusions removal capacity. However, the low mechanical strength and inadequate thermal shock resistance (TSR) of these materials restrict their further application. In this work, ZrO2-toughened C2M2A14-based porous ceramics are fabricated by using the polymer sponge replica method. Nano-sized ZrO2particles derived from nano-ZrO2sol are beneficial to enhance the mechanical properties and TSR of porous ceramics. The optimized porous C2M2A14ceramics exhibit robust compressive strength (2.15 MPa), good residual strength ratio (66.4%) and excellent filtration efficiency in the reduction in total oxygen content (68.4%) by adding 3 wt% ZrO2sol. These excellent comprehensive properties show that as-prepared porous C2M2A14ceramics are promising candidate materials for application in the field of critical metal filtration.

In this study, zirconia (ZrO 2 ) ceramics exhibiting exceptional mechanical properties were fabricated utilizing vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing technology. Subsequent surface modification was conducted to convert the material from a hydrophilic to a superhydrophobic state. An inverted triangle pyramid structural model was devised to safeguard the superhydrophobic surface by means of its architectural design, culminating in the development of wear-resistant superhydrophobic ZrO 2 ceramics. Comprehensive investigations were conducted into process optimization, microstructural characteristics, mechanical attributes, hydrophobicity, and tribological properties. The findings revealed that utilizing BYK-111 as a dispersant at a concentration of 2.5 wt.% yields optimal rheological behavior of the ZrO 2 ceramics slurry, conducive to 3D printing applications. At a sintering temperature of 1550 °C, the ZrO 2 ceramics attained a density of 99.3%, while its Vickers hardness and flexural strength peaked at 1465.02 HV and 641.87 MPa, respectively. The findings revealed that the surface contact angle of the modified ceramics specimen attained 157 , signifying outstanding superhydrophobic characteristics. To preserve its superhydrophobic microstructure from abrasion-induced damage, a three-dimensional architecture featuring minute inverted pyramids was engineered to shield the superhydrophobic surface. To investigate the impact of varying inverted pyramid geometries and dimensions on wear resistance, a range of alternative structural configurations were devised for wear testing. The wear resistance of ceramics with these distinct structural forms was assessed by comparing their contact angles. This research offers an innovative, cost-effective, and efficient approach for fabricating superhydrophobic materials within the ceramics sector, thereby improving their wear resistance.

The prime advantage of BaTiO 3 for energy-storage applications is its compatibility with reducing-atmosphere sintering processes, a well-developed technology that allows cost-effective co-firing with Ni electrodes. Nevertheless, the high hysteresis and low breakdown strength of BaTiO 3 limit its broader applications in energy-storage devices. In this work, core-shell structured BaTiO 3 @ZrO 2 ceramics are synthesized by a sol-gel method, with particular attention paid to the effects of coating time on the microstructure and energy storage properties. The introduction of ZrO 2 layer significantly increases the breakdown strength of BaTiO 3 ceramics. When the coating duration is 5 h, a high discharge energy density of 2.09 J/cm 3 is obtained, representing a fourfold enhancement over pure BaTiO 3 ceramics. Additionally, the BaTiO 3 @ZrO 2 ceramics exhibit an excellent energy storage stability against DC-bias, temperature, and frequency. This work provides a feasible way to optimize the energy storage properties of ferroelectric ceramics.

In this study, we sought to develop structure-function integrated ZrO 2 -SiO 2 ceramic nanocomposites by simultaneously incorporating one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and three-dimensional (3D) Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase. The CNTs and Ti 3 AlC 2 were introduced into the ZrO 2 -SiO 2 precursor powder via a straightforward wet ball milling process. CNTs maintained excellent structural stability during sintering, whereas the Ti 3 AlC 2 decomposed into Al and TiC. The flexural strength of the nanocomposite was enhanced by 34 % attributed to the pull-out strengthening effect of the CNTs. The uniformly distributed 1D CNTs and the in-situ formed 3D TiC particles created an interconnected network within the ceramic matrix, thereby providing efficient pathways for electron transport. Consequently, the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic wave absorption properties of the nanocomposites were markedly improved. This study demonstrates an effective approach to developing structure-function integrated ceramic composites by exploiting the dimensional differences and synergistic interactions between the filler phases.

Ceramic/metal functional gradient materials (FGMs) are used in a wide range of applications in energy, machinery, aerospace and other fields due to the advantages of both ceramic and metal materials. However, conventional laser additive manufacturing faces significant challenges, such as consequential residual thermal stresses due to the large physical differences between ceramics and metals, which lead to warpage deformation and interlayer cracking of the material. Therefore, this paper introduces a new strategy to prepare ZrO 2 /Ni FGMs based on shrinkage-matched materials extrusion 3D printing. Firstly, the consistency of shrinkage of ZrO 2 and Ni was achieved with a minor volumetric shrinkage different of 0.6% by adjusting the solid content of the slurry and the sintering temperature. Then, the microstructure and mechanical properties of FGMs with different numbers of gradient layers (2, 3, 5) and thicknesses (100 µm, 150 µm, 200 µm) were investigated, demonstrating a gradual elemental and mechanical gradient. Through the analysis of fracture cracks and fracture surface morphology, the fracture process and mechanisms of the samples were elucidated. Finally, several typical structures FGMs were prepared from pure metal to pure ceramic in both XY and Z directional gradient. Overall, it addresses the challenges associated with fabricating deformation-free ceramic/metal FGMs and developing strong bonds between ceramics and metals.

Organic acid modification can significantly enhance the performance of iron-based catalysts in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) by regulating the quantity and type of functional groups on the catalyst surface. In this study, efficient Fe/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared using impregnation and environmentally friendly solid-state synthesis methods, and the effects of different organic acids on catalytic performance were systematically investigated. The catalysts were rigorously evaluated under industrially relevant FTS conditions, with reaction temperatures set at 270 °C for the impregnation method and 250 °C for the solid-state grinding method under 20 bar and WHSV = 5400 mL/(gcat·h). Comprehensive characterization techniques were employed to reveal the complex relationship between catalytic activity and structural characteristics. We systematically studied the effects of organic acids with different quantities of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on improving FTS catalytic performance. The results show that citric acid (CA) significantly enhanced the catalytic activity in the CA-Fe/ZrO2 system. At a 6% Fe loading, a CO conversion of 39.89% was achieved at 270 °C, while maintaining a relatively low CH4 selectivity. The hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of CA can form stable complexes with metal ions, which improves the dispersion of iron, enhances the reducibility of iron oxides, promotes the formation of active Hägg iron carbide (χ-Fe5C2), facilitates chain growth, and ultimately boosts the production of valuable C5+ hydrocarbons. These findings highlight the potential of CA in optimizing iron-based FTS catalysts, offering important theoretical insights and practical guidance for future industrial applications.
