The limited efficiency of water oxidation is a significant challenge in the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) without sacrificial agents. Among the different water oxidation reactions, the two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e− WOR) stands out as a promising route for direct H 2 O 2 generation, owing to its favorable kinetics. However, strategies to effectively activate 2e − WOR remain underdeveloped. In this work, we employ a molecular engineering approach to achieve a high density of oxygen vacancy sites on the surface of BiVO 4 (Ov-BiVO 4 ). These vacancies promote favorable interactions with the oxygen-rich ligands of MIL-101 through electrostatic self-assembly, resulting in enhanced growth and reduced formation energy of the material. The optimized photocatalyst demonstrates a remarkable initial photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production rate of 4550.4 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water, a 38-fold increase compared to the unmodified BiVO 4 . Additionally, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) reaches 12.35% at 420 nm. This enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of oxygen vacancies, the incorporation of rare earth bimetallic centers, and the Z-scheme heterojunction, all of which facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Notably, the unsaturated coordination sites of Ce and Er efficiently promote O 2 adsorption and activate the 2e − oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway, crucial for efficient H 2 O 2 production. MIL-101 further improves the water oxidation reaction, optimizing the redox reaction matching within the system. This work introduces a straightforward molecular engineering method for dual-atom anchoring with tailored coordination environments, emphasizing the importance of redox dual-regulation for achieving efficient H 2 O 2 synthesis.

In this work, BiVO 4 /MoS 2 (BM) heterojunction was prepared by combining ultrasonic agitation exfoliation and in-situ growth method. Since flower-like MoS 2 comprised a larger contact area with pollutants, by decorating dewdrops-shaped BiVO 4 on the flower-like MoS 2 , h + on BiVO 4 can be transferred to MoS 2 . Therefore, h + with strong oxidizing ability enriched on MoS 2 can effectively attack the pollutants and substantially improve the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared heterojunction. The degradation rate of tetracycline with BiVO 4 /MoS 2 heterojunction (68.83 % in 120 min) was 5.64 and 4.23 times that with pure MoS 2 (12.19 %) and pure BiVO 4 (16.26 %), respectively. This work provided a new idea for the construction of highly active MoS 2 -based heterojunctions.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was designed to detect N 1 -methyladenosine (m 1 A), where BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction was employed as photoactive material, polyamidoamine (PAMAM) and 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CPBA) were used as m 1 A antibody immobilization matrix, and Ti-based metal-organic framework encapsulated heterostructure of TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) was adopted as signal amplification. Due to the interaction between TiO 2 and phosphate, TiO 2 @NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) was captured after immunoreaction between m 1 A and its antibody, which can further improve the detection sensitivity with increased PEC response. Under optimal experimental conditions, this method presented wide dynamic range (0.05–35 nM) with the low determination limit (16.7 pM, S/N = 3). This detection strategy showed good detection reproducibility, stability and selectivity. This method was applied to assess the effect of antibiotics on m 1 A content in the leaves, stems and roots of rice seedlings.

Phototherapy and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) are widely used for the synergistic treatment of tumors and have received considerable attention. However, an inappropriate tumor microenvironment, including pH, H 2 O 2 , oxygen, and glutathione levels, can reduce the therapeutic effects of synergistic phototherapy and SDT. Here, a novel Bi-based soluble microneedle (MN) is designed for the CT imaging of breast tumors and starvation therapy/gas therapy-enhanced phototherapy/SDT. The optimized Bi/BiVO 4 Schottky heterojunction serves as the tip of the MN, which not only has excellent photothermal conversion ability and CT contrast properties, but its heterojunction can also avoid the rapid combination of electrons and hole pairs, thereby enhancing the photodynamic/sonodynamic effects. A degradable MN with excellent mechanical properties is fabricated by optimizing the ratios of poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), and sodium hyaluronate. Glucose oxidase (GO x ) and diallyl trisulfide are loaded into the MN to achieve tumor starvation and gas therapy, respectively; And the controlled release of GO x and H 2 S can be achieved under ultrasound or near-infrared laser irradiation. The in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that this multifunctional MN can achieve high therapeutic efficacy through starvation therapy/gas therapy-enhanced phototherapy/SDT. The designed multifunctional MN provides a prospective approach for synergistic phototherapy and SDT.

The band gaps of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) and bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) are about 2.40 eV and 1.30 eV, respectively. Although both BiVO4and Bi2S3are capable of strong visible light absorption, electron–hole recombination occurs easily. To solve this problem, we designed a one-step hydrothermal method for synthesizing a Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3)/Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) heterojunction using polyvinylpyrrolidone K-30 (PVP) as a structure-directing agent, and 2-Amino-3-mercaptopropanoic acid (l-cysteine) as a sulfur source. The pH of the reaction solution was regulated to yield different products: when the pH was 7.5, only monoclinic BiVO4was produced (sample 7.5); when the pH was 8.0 or 8.5, both Bi2S3and BiVO4were produced (samples 8.0 and 8.5); and when the pH was 9.0, only Bi2S3was produced (sample 9.0). In sample 8.0, Bi2S3and BiVO4were closely integrated with each other, with Bi2S3particles formed on the surface of concentric BiVO4layers, but the two compounds grew separately in a pH solution of 8.5. Visible-light photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrated that the degradation efficiency of the Bi2S3/BiVO4heterojunction was highest when prepared under a pH of 8.0. The initial rhodamine B in the solution (5 mg/L) was completely degraded within three hours. Recycling experiments verified the high stability of Bi2S3/BiVO4. The synthesis method proposed in this paper is expected to enable large-scale and practical use of Bi2S3/BiVO4.Keywords:heterojunction;photocatalysis;hydrothermal method;bismuth vanadate;bismuth sulfide;pH value

A new visible-light-induced Z-scheme photocatalytic system, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /(MoS 2 /NiGa 2 O 4 )-(BiVO 4 /PdS), is designed and prepared by using hydrothermal and mixed-calcination methods And the prepared samples are characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and UV–vis absorption spectra. The photocatalytic activity is evaluated towards Orange G degradation with simultaneous hydrogen evolution under visible-light irradiation. The photocatalytic experiments indicate that the Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /(MoS 2 /NiGa 2 O 4 )-(BiVO 4 /PdS) as photocatalyst displays very high photocatalytic activity. It can be ascribed to two sides. One is the use of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 offering ultraviolet-light to activate the wide-band gap NiGa 2 O 4 . Another is the construction of Z-scheme system between NiGa 2 O 4 and BiVO 4 which can result in a more efficient separation of photoexicited charge carriers, thus endowing it with much powerful oxidation and reduction capabilities. Moreover, the reusability study shows that the prepared photocatalyst can be effectively recycled for three repetitive cycles without an apparent deactivation. In addition, the possible Z-scheme mechanism of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /(MoS 2 /NiGa 2 O 4 )-(BiVO 4 /PdS) is also proposed, and further evidenced by photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The present work not only designs a new photocatalytic system but also well applies in photocatalytic degradation of refractory pollutant with simultaneous hydrogen evolution.

The efficiency of CO 2 photocatalytic reduction is severely limited by inefficient separation and sluggish transfer. In this study, spin polarization was induced and built-in electric field was strengthened via Co doping in the BiVO 4 cell to boost photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Results showed that owing to the generation of spin-polarized electrons upon Co doping, carrier separation and photocurrent production of the Co-doped BiVO 4 were enhanced. CO production during CO 2 photocatalytic reduction from the Co-BiVO 4 was 61.6 times of the BiVO 4 . Notably, application of an external magnetic field (100 mT) further boosted photocatalytic CO 2 reduction from the Co-BiVO 4 , with 68.25 folds improvement of CO production compared to pristine BiVO 4 . The existence of a built-in electric field (IEF) was demonstrated through density functional theory (DFT) simulations and kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Mechanism insights could be elucidated as follows: doping of magnetic Co into the BiVO 4 resulted in increased the number of spin-polarized photo-excited carriers, and application of a magnetic field led to an augmentation of intrinsic electric field due to a dipole shift, thereby extending carrier lifetime and suppressing charges recombination. Additionally, HCOO − was a crucial intermediate in the process of CO 2 RR, and possible pathways for CO 2 reduction were proposed. This study highlights the significance of built-in electric fields and the important role of spin polarization for promotion of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

The photothermal effect generated under illumination can increase the surface temperature of the catalyst, and enhance the migration rate of the photogenerated carrier and the activity of the catalytic reaction , which is an effective way to promote photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. In this study, a Z-scheme BiVO 4 /CuBi 2 O 4 (BVO-CBO) heterojunction with 0D/1D structure was prepared by hydrothermal method . Compared with pure BVO and CBO, the temperature of the Z-scheme BVO-CBO heterojunction can reach 90.1°C after 180 S illumination, and the temperature of the BVO-CBO+TC solution system can rise to 39.5°C after 10 min, which has higher heating rate and photocatalytic performance than the monomer catalyst. The experimental results showed that the photogenerated electron transfer pathway combined with the photothermal effect effectively promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers and maintained a strong redox potential , so that the removal rate of tetracycline (TC) by BVO-CBO reached 85.0 % within 90 minutes, which was significantly higher than that of pure BVO (39 %) and CBO (33 %). In addition, the toxicity of intermediate products gradually decreased during TC degradation. In addition, the effects of reaction temperature, pH, concentration of TC, common aquatic substrates and simulated natural water on TC removal were also studied. The combination of its structural advantages, redox capabilities, and photothermal effect provided a promising approach to the treatment of antibiotic-contaminated water.

A constructed MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /BiVO 4 ternary photocatalyst(MBB) mainly with a S-scheme heterostructure was loaded on a 3D lignosulfonate modified poly(vinyl formal) sponge to obtain a novel composite sponge(PLS-MBB) with an enhanced performance in synergistic adsorption and photo-Fenton degradation of various fluoroquinolones(FQs) in water. The synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis of PLS-MBB notably improved the applicable pH from 2.0 to 9.0 and reduced the dosage of Fe 2+ to 0.014 mmol/L in Fenton reaction , which could achieve the degradation efficiency of 92.8 % for FQs within 60.0 min at pH 6.0. The photo-generated electrons by MBB and the redox transformation of Mo(IV)/Mo(VI) and Bi(III)/Bi(V) accelerated the conversion of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ ; besides, the efficient adsorption of FQs on the sponge carrier promoted the surface degradation in solution, thereby causing an enhanced photo-Fenton reaction. This work provided a novel strategy to improve photo-Fenton reaction and accordingly fabricated a talented material for effective removal of organic contaminants in water.

The selective cleavage-bond of glyphosate is still a major challenge, especially in biodegradation and chemical degradation like advanced oxidation process (AOP). In this work, we found that the BiVO 4 and BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 heterogeneous photocatalysts generated different intermediates during the photocatalytic degradation of glyphosate. The main intermediate product by the BiVO 4 photocatalyst was aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA, reaching to 81%) with high biological toxicity, which means glyphosate was degraded through the AMPA pathway. While the BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 heterogeneous photocatalysts showed a significant inhibition of the accumulated AMPA (31%) at pH = 4, leading to the generation of benign products, such as sarcosine, acetic acid and PO 4 3- . More importantly, the BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 -2 photocatalyst barely generated AMPA (less than 5%) at pH = 10. The lower AMPA concentration in our experiments was not attributed to its rapid degradation rate because AMPA could not be degraded from acidic (pH = 4) to alkaline (pH = 10). It indicated that glyphosate suffered from two cleavage-bond pathways between the BiVO 4 and BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 heterogeneous photocatalysts, which had been proved by mass spectrometry (MS) results. The attenuated total reflectance Fourier transforms infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrum and density function theory (DFT) demonstrated that the adsorption sites of the BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 -2 photocatalyst occurred on the phosphate group of glyphosate molecules at pH = 10, which facilitated the C–P bond cleavage and inhibited the formation of AMPA. We found that pH-mediated BiVO 4 /BiPO 4 dipole controlled and changed glyphosate electron cloud distribution, played an important role in the selective cleavage-bond of glyphosate. These results revealed both scientific and environmental significance for the efficient degradation of glyphosate through benign intermediates in soil and water.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation represents an environment-friendly strategy for chemical transformation. Herein, we report the oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides with high selectivity (up to 99%) on Pt/BiVO 4 photocatalyst in water under visible light illumination. The system exhibited excellent performance for the oxidation of sulfides in water compared with organic solvents. Isotopic oxygen (H 2 18 O) experiments clearly revealed that the oxygen atoms in the sulfoxide were mainly from water. Electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that the reactive oxygen species were the peroxy species, which were generated from water oxidation on BiVO 4 via the two-electron pathway. Dioxygen was reduced to water through proton-coupled electron transfer.

Large amounts of carbon are stored primarily in dissolved organic matter (DOM), which plays an important indicator of lake eutrophication. However, removing DOM from eutrophic lakes remains a major challenge. Herein, a novel S-scheme flower-like microsphere BiVO 4 /nanosheet g-C 3 N 4 3D/2D heterojunction was successfully constructed using a two-step method for DOM degradation of real eutrophic lake water in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PDS). 1.0-BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /PDS exhibited highly efficient photocatalytic performance with an 87.8 % removal rate of DOM for 60 min, which was 5.3 and 8.9 times higher than BiVO 4 /PDS and g-C 3 N 4 /PDS, respectively. Sulfate radical (·SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radical (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were mainly responsible for DOM degradation in the 1.0-BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /PDS system, and the transformation pathway of 1 O 2 was emphatically analyzed. In addition, the changes of fluorescence components in DOM were detected using synchronous fluorescence spectra, second derivative spectra, and two-dimensional correlated spectroscopy analysis. Humic-like fluorescence, fulvic-like fluorescence, and protein-like substances were removed higher than 85.30 %, 73.02 %, and 67.23 % by the 1.0-BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 catalyst activating the PDS under visible light (VL), respectively. When the toxicity of catalytically treated eutrophic lake water was estimated by growth inhibition of Escherichia coli , the biotoxicity of DOM decreased continuously in the BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /PDS/VL coupling process. Theoretical calculations and photoelectrochemical tests suggested that the BiVO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /PDS catalytic activity enhancement was attributed to the S-scheme mechanism and hybrid advanced oxidation process. It is expected that this work can provide new insight into DOM degradation in eutrophic lake water by the heterogeneous photocatalysis combined with the PDS activation system.
