δ-MnO 2 was proposed as a promising cathode material for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Nonetheless, its potential application has been impeded by its unstable crystal structure and sluggish reaction kinetics with Zn ions. Herein, we utilized Cr to modify δ-MnO 2 by a simple hydrothermal method to develop cathode materials for aqueous Zn-ion batteries with better stability and electron transport properties. The introduction of Cr enhanced the specific capacity and cycling stability of δ-MnO 2 , in particular, the 3% Cr doped δ-MnO 2 electrode exhibited a large specific capacity of 229.2 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 and an excellent capacitance retention of 86.0% after performing 300 cycles. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the introduction of Cr decreases the band gap of MnO 2 and enhances electron migration in the electrode material. Meanwhile, the introduction of Cr substantially improved the Zn ion adsorption and enhanced the binding energy of δ-MnO 2 , indicating that the addition of Cr promoted the interaction between the Cr doping δ-MnO 2 (Cr-MnO 2 ) electrode materials with Zn ions, while making the structure of the electrode materials more stable. As a result, this suppresses the Jahn-Teller distortion and reduces the solvation and phase transition of Mn.

The advancement of cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is pivotal in fostering the progress of clean energy technologies. In this study, we present a reforming approach aimed at facile fabrication of the Cr-CeO2/rGO electrocatalyst. This involves incorporating a limited quantity of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to serve as a conductive scaffold for CeO2 nanocrystals (NCs) while also introducing Cr, a transition metal, as an active dopant. It is found that the introduction of Cr and rGO induces charge transfer, leading to enhanced electrical conductivity and the creation of additional active sites on the nanocomposite surface. The synergy between rGO and CeO2, along with Cr doping in CeO2, significantly improves HER performance. The representative sample of the Cr(5%)-CeO2/rGO catalyst demonstrates a low overpotential of 83 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, a low Tafel slope of 81 mV dec–1, and excellent stability under alkaline conditions. Significantly, this value of overpotential is reduced by 81 and 127 mV compared to those of the CeO2/rGO nanocomposites and the pristine CeO2 NCs. Theoretical density functional theory calculations additionally validate the phenomenon of charge transfer and improved HER properties, with Cr-CeO2 displaying a favorable Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) for H* adsorption. This study offers novel insights into the design of precious metal electrocatalysts featuring functional interfaces and a wealth of active sites, holding great promise for industrial applications in clean energy conversion and storage.

The contamination of chromium (Cr(VI)) in groundwater threatens public health because of the industrial development being historically less supervised. To remove Cr(VI) from groundwater and other surface waters, a new FeCl 3 -modified magnetic biochar (MBPH550) was prepared from a waste peanut hull. The magnetic potential was to facilitate the separation of absorbent from the water phase. The removal efficiency, adsorption kinetics and isotherm models, and adsorption mechanism of Cr(VI) on MBPH550 were investigated. MBPH550 had a large specific surface of 243.23 m 2 /g and saturation magnetization of 5.65 emu/g. MBPH550 achieved a removal efficiency of Cr(VI) up to 92.2% ± 2.0%. Low pH favored the adsorption of Cr(VI). At pH 6.0, the adsorption of Cr(VI) on MBPH550 fits the Elovich kinetic model and Freundlich isothermal adsorption model, with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 6.64 mg/g. In addition to the direct functional group coordination and precipitation on the surface of MBPH550, Cr(VI) was also reduced to Cr 3+ , Cr(OH) 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , and FeCr 2 O 4 , which were all deposited on the surface of MBPH550. MBPH550 could be a widely applied efficient adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater, groundwater, and leachate of Cr-contaminated soil. Graphical abstract

MgGa2O4 (MGO) with the spinel structure exhibits abundance defects and could achieve the modulation of emission by ion doping as persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs). Here, we introduced Cr3+ ions into MGO to achieve near-infrared (NIR) emission, and Pr3+ ions to tune the lattice environment for enhanced NIR emission. The optimal composite, MgGa2O4: 0.005Cr3+, 0.003Pr3+ (MGCP), achieved enhanced NIR emission at 709 nm under 222 nm excitation. The concentration quenching was observed due to electric dipole–quadrupole interaction at high Cr3+ and Pr3+ content. The afterglow mechanism was revealed, while the energy-splitting occurs from trivalent Cr3+ ions at 650 and 709 nm, thanks to the complex lattice environment. We observed that the emission at 709 nm decreased, while the satellite signal at 650 nm increased first and then decreased intensity with increasing temperature, due to the intervalence charge transfer for Cr3+ ions at 303–528 K. Ratiometric temperature sensing was therefore realized with superb linearity, high absolute sensitivity at 303 K for 4.18%, and accuracy at 528 K for 2.62 K, confirming with the luminescence intensity ratio at 709 and 650 nm under excitation at 222 nm. Thus, we provide a method with energy-splitting emission of Cr3+ ions to design temperature sensing.

Adsorbents with fast kinetics and high capacity have always been attractive for wastewater treatment. Herein, multi-shelled hollow mesoporous organosilica functionalized by hydroxyphosphatoethyl groups on dual-pore surfaces (P-HMO) is prepared by general one-pot co-condensation. The resulting P-HMO exhibits high hydrophilicity, large surface area and well-developed pore structure, providing P-HMO fast adsorption kinetics (C 0 = 320 mg·L -1 , equilibrium within 5 min) and ultrahigh adsorption efficiency for Pb(II) and Cr(VI), the adsorption capacity reaches 1056.53 and 869.56 mg·g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, P-HMO displays outstanding reusability over 10 adsorption–desorption cycles thanks to the stable framework structure that can resist wear and tear during water treatment. The advantages of long service life, high efficiency and broad pH range make P-HMO promising in industrial water purification.

Zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) is widely packed in filters for Cr(VI) removal, but it suffers from ferrochrome precipitate passivation. In this study, a mixed Fe 0 and biochar (BC) system was established and investigated for promoted Fe 0 corrosion and enhanced Cr(VI) removal through iron‑carbon micro-electrolysis (IC-ME) by batch and column experiments with Fe 0 and BC as controls. Due to electrochemical reaction between Fe 0 and BC, there was an enhancement in iron corrosion and subsequent formation of secondary minerals on Fe 0 surface. These minerals included magnetite, lepidocrocite, and goethite, which facilitated Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction. The Fe 0 -BC system therefore obtained a higher Cr(VI) removal rate of 86.3 % within 6 h than those of the BC (7.9 %) and Fe 0 (12.5 %) systems. Chromium species distribution showed that 76.2 % of removed Cr(VI) was converted to Cr(III). The resultant Cr(III) of 68.4 % was immobilized on Fe 0 and BC surfaces due to precipitation and sequestration. The optimal Fe/BC mass ratio was 2:1 for galvanic reaction and Cr(VI) removal. The removal of Cr(VI) by Fe 0 -BC exhibited a pH-dependency, with acidic conditions favoring higher removal rates. Additionally, the column experiment result revealed that Cr(VI) removal capacity of 4.0 mg Cr(VI)/(g Fe 0 ) and operational lifespan of 1851 PV in the Fe 0 -BC column were 6.7 and 3.9-fold greater than those in the Fe 0 column, further confirming that galvanic reaction could effectively alleviate Fe 0 surface passivation. These results indicated that mixed Fe 0 and BC as an effective medium in filter tanks could form IC-ME to enhance Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization during water treatment.

In this study, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-functionalized graphene oxide (AS-GO) was synthesized by one-step refluxing of graphene oxide (GO) with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (AS). The properties of GO and AS-GO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Specific surface area and Zeta potential. Various factors, such as solution pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, contact time, temperature and coexisting anions, were analyzed during the adsorption process. The results showed that the Cr(VI) adsorption onto AS-GO was highly pH dependent, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 215.2 mg/g at 328 K. Experimental data, obtained from adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms studies, could be well fitted by Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The XPS, FT-IR, and EDS analysis revealed that Cr(VI) removal might be attributed to the Cr(VI) adsorption on surface functional groups (protonated amine groups and Si OH groups) and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). These results demonstrated that AS-GO could be a promising adsorbent for Cr (VI) removal from wastewater.

Plasmonic-driven photocatalyst have outstanding solar driven surface plasmon resonance (SPR) characteristics, and it is a prospective approach to improve photocatalytic performance. Herein, plasmonic Co metal decorated SrTiO 3 : La/Cr hollow cubes was developed and constructed by template-free hydrothermal method. The photocatalyst possesses the merits of the hollow structure with large specific surface area and strong light absorption. The intimate contact between Co and SrTiO 3 : La/Cr promotes the interfacial charge transfer. Co-SrTiO 3 : La/Cr manifests the superior photocatalytic performance toward water splitting for hydrogen evolution compared with that of other cocatalyst. And the H 2 evolution exceeds 210 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under the optimum of the amount of 1.25wt% Co NPs. The mechanism of the enhanced performance comes from the improvement of light absorption in the visible-light region induced by SPR, as well as the efficient interfacial separation and transport of charge carriers on the photocatalyst facilitated by the local electromagnetic fields of plasmonic Co metal. In this research, a new material, chitosan/polypyrrole (CS/PPy), was synthesized and linked with the Cr(VI)-reducing bacterial strain YL3 to treat Cr(VI)-polluted soil. The findings demonstrated that the synergistic application of strain YL3 and CS/PPy achieved the greatest reduction (99.6 %). During the remediation process, CS/PPy served as a mass-storage and sustained release agent in the soil, which initially decreased the toxic effects of high concentrations of Cr(VI) on strain YL3, thereby enhancing the Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of strain YL3. These combined effects significantly mitigated Cr(VI) stress in the soil and restored enzyme activities . Furthermore, wheat growth in the treated soil also significantly improved. High-throughput sequencing of the microorganisms in the treated soil revealed that CS/PPy was not only effective at removing Cr(VI) but also at preserving the original microbial diversity of the soil. This suggests that the combined treatment using strain YL3 and CS/PPy could rehabilitate Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, positioning CS/PPy as a promising composite material for future bioremediation efforts in Cr(VI)-contaminated soils.

Two series of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been synthesized via in situ UV polymerization for the removal of N2 from CH4. MIL-100(Cr) particles activated at different temperatures were used as fillers. MIL-100(Cr) activated at 150°C with CH4-selective adsorption was incorporated with poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymer to improve the CH4/N2 separation performance, and that activated at 250°C with N2-selective adsorption and diffusion was incorporated with fluoropolymer to improve the N2/CH4 separation performance. The effects of the filler loadings on the gas permeation and separation performances were investigated. The optimum MMMs with 5 wt.% loading of MIL-100(Cr) activated at 150°C exhibited a 70% increased CH4/N2 permselectivity of 5.0 with a 37% increased CH4 permeability of 11.2 Barrer (tested at 0.2 MPa and 35°C). The optimum MMMs with 5 wt.% loading of MIL-100(Cr) activated at 250°C exhibited a 106% increased N2 permeability of 71.5 Barrer with an 89% increased N2/CH4 permselectivity of 1.9.

Herein, the ultrathin porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet (uPNC-NS-800) catalyst was developed for efficient Cr(VI) reduction. Its versatile structures were obtained via thermal exfoliation of metal-organic frameworks with KCl. Impressively, uPNC-NS-800 achieved complete reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) within only 6 min in oxalic acid (OA) aqueous solution, exhibiting significantly higher catalytic efficiency compared to PNC-NS-800, which lacks ultrathin structure. It also retained high catalytic activity after twelve cycles and exhibited excellent applicability, effectively removing Cr(VI) from various water environment within 30 min. Additionally, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated that uPNC-NS-800 promoted the generation of ·CO 2 − and ·OH radicals from OA, accelerating Cr(VI) reduction. Density functional theory calculations suggested that Defect C was the dominated active center and Pyridine N, Pyrrole N, and Graphite N were the synergistic active sites to together facilitate Cr(VI) reduction. This study provides a new insight into designing efficient carbon-based catalysts for real environmental wastewater remediation.

Achieving the efficient construction and regulation of active sites in complex high-entropy system is crucial for developing high-entropy alloys (HEAs) as top-notch catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a rapid thermal shock process coupled with Cr content regulation was employed to fabricate a self-supporting PtFeCoNiCuCr0.5@CC-720 as HEAs material, which bears a low HER overpotential of 83 mV to achieve 100 mA cm-2 in KOH electrolyte. Based on experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the influence of Cr content on microstructure as well as HER electrocatalytic activity was elucidated. It was revealed that incorporation of Cr enhances the crystallinity of HEAs material, accelerates the electron transfer rate, and modulates the electronic configuration of active sites due to its low electronegativity induced electron donating effect. As a result, the d-band center of Pt sites was shifted towards Fermi level, leading to optimized Gibbs free energy for hydrogen species adsorption/desorption and improved HER activity. This work offers a perspective for rapid regulation of HER activity in high entropy alloys and is helpful for designing electrocatalysts with enhanced activity.
