SWCNTs-channeled MOF nanosheet membrane for high-efficient organic solvent nanofiltration

Mian Wu,Xixue Fu,Jing Li,Wenqian Zhao,Xiaobing Li

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has become increasingly important in petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, demanding superior and robust membranes. 2D MOF nanosheets hold great promise in the preparation of OSN membrane. Nevertheless, the fabrication of defect-free 2D MOF membranes with robust mechanical strength is hampered due to the weak interlamellar interactions between MOF nanosheets. Herein, 2D MOF composite membrane for high-performance OSN application is fabricated through the assembly of copper 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (CuBDC) nanosheets and NH 2 -SWCNTs. Within this composite configuration, NH 2 -SWCNTs can shelter the defects between the adjacent CuBDC nanosheets, rendering CuBDC/CNTs composite membranes precise molecular sieving ability. Meanwhile, the nanochannels created by NH 2 -SWCNTs with low frictional coefficients on the internal surface promote the permeation of organic solvents. Moreover, the multiple interactions between CuBDC and NH 2 -SWCNTs improve the mechanical strength of composite membranes. Accordingly, the composite membranes display excellent rejections of dye molecules on the basis of size-sieving mechanism with superior methanol permeance of 1260 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , as well as steady congo red rejection at high trans -membrane pressure of 5 bar, demonstrating good pressure resistance of composite membranes. Moreover, the composite membranes exhibit outstanding stability against high-concentration feeds and long-term operation for 50 h, confirming excellent practicality in the purification of dyes from organic solvents. The design approach in this work may inspire the fabrication of other nanosheet-based membranes for high-efficient OSN.

Ultrathin Low-Crystallinity MOF Membranes Fabricated by Interface Layer Polarization Induction

Zhihua Qiao,Yueyao Liang,Zhengqing Zhang,Donghai Mei,Zhi Wang,Michael D. Guiver,Chongli Zhong

Practical, ultrathin metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes have the potential to achieve otherwise difficult separations, but current fabrication methods still face challenges in the simultaneous improvement of both selectivity and permeance. Here, ultrathin, low-crystallinity-state MOF (LC-MOF) membranes are realized by a facile general method of interface layer polarization induction. This is achieved using an interface layer having metal ions with dense and uniform distribution, resulting in the creation of abundant open metal sites. Three types of LC-MOF membranes (45–150 nm) are fabricated, among which ZIF-8 membranes modified in situ with diethanolamine (DZIF-8) display the best performance for propylene/propane separation, showing unprecedented propylene permeance (2000–3000 Gas Permeance Units) with very high propylene/propane selectivity (90–120).

Scalable fabrication of biohybrid magnetic MOF-based micromotors for toxin enrichment

Xiangyu Wang,Haidong Yu,Xiaohu Xia,Yixuan Yang,Bingsuo Zou,Rui Ma,Yabin Zhang,Ben Wang

Contemporary industrial production and human activity release numerous toxins into our environment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates for addressing these toxins due to their ultrahigh surface area, tailored pore size, and responsiveness to stimuli. With the rise of micro/nanomotor, imparting active motion to MOFs becomes crucial for efficiently performing tasks in challenging locations. However, creating individual active MOF entities is challenging during preparation, and they may perform tasks inefficiently, even if constructed. It is essential to explore active MOF-based micromotors without compromising their loading capacity, particularly with the rising use of low-surface-area nanoparticles. Leveraging the diverse structures and forms found in nature, this study proposes a universal synthesis strategy for a series of biohybrid magnetic MOF-based micromotors (BMMM), enabling rapid and efficient enrichment of toxins within narrow or small cavities under magnetic actuation. The resultant BMMM show high surface area, abundant pores, and improved magnetic responsiveness. These characteristics allow them to demonstrate exceptionally improved efficiency for various toxins: up to 1118.66 mg/g, which is further demonstrated in narrow microtubes, with over 90% efficiency after several cycling uses. This study not only provides a universal strategy for constructing BMMM but also offers an efficient solution for toxin treatment in out-of-reach cavities.

Pt Nanoparticles Loaded on Bimetallic Porphyrinic MOF for Selective Hydrogenation Reactions

Meihua Zhao,Zhuo Li,Jianfa Chen,Danyu Guo,Zhongfen Nie,Ruiqi Fang,Yingwei Li

Graphical A Pt NPs incorporated MOF (Pt/PCN-224 (FeCo)) with Fe/Co single atoms has been successfully fabricated. Pt/PCN-224 (FeCo) exhibited high catalytic activity in the chemoselective hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural (FFA) to cyclopentanone (CPO). Fe/Co sites of the ligands could effectively tune the electronic properties of Pt NPs, and Co sites could synergistically promote the hydrogen spillover, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) loaded on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show promising catalytic performances in various reactions, but finely tuning the electronic properties of MNPs remains challenging. Herein, metal NP-MOF synergy has been finely regulated by incorporating Pt NPs into PCN-224 (FeCo). The as-prepared Pt/PCN-224 (FeCo) exhibited high catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of various carbonyl substrates. Detailed characterizations and mechanistic studies revealed that the Fe/Co sites of the ligands can effectively tune the electronic properties of Pt NPs, which achieved promoted capability to activate H 2 . The atomic hydrogen (H*) produced by Pt sites mainly migrated to the Co sites to promote the hydrogenation process via hydrogen spillover, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. This work is devoted to a promising strategy to optimize the catalytic performance of MOF-based nanomaterials by incorporating metal NPs in the thermocatalytic systems.

Novel biocompatible pH-fluorescence responsive MOF nanocarriers for lung cancer treatment

Julaiti Ainiwaer,Abuduxikuer Abudureyimu,Xiaoliang Jing,Qingchao Sun,Edris Awut,Yanchao Deng,Liwei Zhang

In this study, we synthesized two novel metal–organic frameworks [Cd(C 4 H 4 N 2 )(C 12 H 19 P 3 O 9 )]n (1) and {Ca[ Cd ( H 2 O ) 3 ] 2 (C 24 H 15 N 6 O 6 ) 2 }n (2) distinguished by exceptional fluorescence properties. Focusing on 1, we innovatively combined it with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to create a pH-responsive, fluorescence-guided nanocarrier system (HPC-1@DOX) for targeted delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) in cancer treatment. We thoroughly evaluated the loading and release efficiency of DOX under varied pH conditions, demonstrating sustained and controlled drug release characteristics in vitro, along with substantial drug-loading capacity. Notably, HPC-1@DOX exhibited pH-responsive behavior, releasing DOX preferentially at pH 6.8, indicative of targeted delivery to tumor and inflammatory sites while minimizing release at higher pH values. Moreover, we explored its biological impact, confirming HPC-1@DOX’s ability to up-regulate miR-493-3p expression in lung carcinoma cells, thereby inhibiting proliferation, reducing invasiveness, and inducing apoptosis. This multifunctional nanocarrier system represents a significant advancement towards targeted and effective cancer therapy.

Structure design of MOF-derived Fe2O3 for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Huaxu Song,Zhenlu Li,Yean Li,Jingying Hou,Jinya Sun,Yishun Xie,Xiaohui Zhang,Xin Fan

The enhancement of electrochemical performance in supercapacitors is significantly dependent on the development of electrode materials characterized by optimized morphology and size. Fe 2 O 3 is a promising material among various candidates, but its practical applications are hindered by internet challenges such as poor conductivity. In this study, Fe-MOF was employed as a precursor template for synthesizing Fe 2 O 3 , and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was introduced to regulate crystal growth. This approach led to the successful synthesis of Fe 2 O 3 particles with three distinct morphologies. The MFO-2 material, characterized by a large surface area, exhibited an impressive specific capacitance of 96.8 mAh g -1 at a current density of 1 A g -1 . To further explore its practical application, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with MFO-2 as the negative electrode and super-activated carbon (AC) as the positive electrode. The resulting AC//MFO-2 supercapacitor demonstrated a maximum energy density of 20.12 Wh kg -1 at a power density of 140 W kg -1 . It retained 90.5% of its capacity after 10000 charge-discharge cycles at 2 A g -1 , confirming its excellent cycling stability. Additionally, the two devices were connected in parallel and successfully powered an LED light, providing strong evidence for the practical applicability of the proposed system.

MOF-Derived Cu/CeO2 Nanocatalysts Using Ascorbic Acid for CO Oxidation

Sajid Ali,Xingwen Cha,Jinxin He,Muhammad Ubaid Ali,Muhammad Junaid Aslam,Songbo Chen,Kok Bing Tan,Guowu Zhan

Tunable electronic properties of supported Cu/CeO2 catalysts are critical for improving the active site activity in catalysis. In this contribution, we propose a surface engineering protocol that utilizes unique ascorbic acid (AA) properties to generate surface defects and modify the electronic properties of Cu–Ce catalysts. This approach relies on forming abundant (Ce3+-Ov) defective sites on the CeO2 surface synthesized with a Ce-benzene-tricarboxylate metal–organic framework (MOF) as a precursor through AA adsorption. Subsequently, Cu sites can be effectively anchored onto the generated Ce3+-Ov, exhibiting excellent electronic transfer between (Ce3+-Ov/Ce4+ ↔ Cu2+/Cu+) CuCe, resulting in highly active Cu+ with well-balanced Ce3+-Ov defects. A high fraction of Cu+ with Ce3+-Ov was dedicated to the presence of AA. The resultant Cu/AA-MOF-CeO2 catalyst demonstrated outstanding performance toward CO oxidation (90–95 °C), being far superior to that of the conventionally prepared Cu/MOF-CeO2 catalyst (110–115 °C). In-depth characterizations confirmed that the remarkable performance was considerably related to the enhanced Cu–Ce interaction, enriched Cu+ active sites, and balanced Ce3+-Ov defects. This work highlights the potential of the Cu/AA-MOF-CeO2 catalyst as a sustainable solution for low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation reaction.

Lightweight UiO-66 MOF/CNT composites achieving high electromagnetic wave absorption

Zeng Liu,Yuanyuan Zeng,Lan Long,Yang Li,Wei Zhou

Metal organic framework (MOF), with light weight, high specific surface area, and tenability had significant electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption potential. Ultrathin and efficient UiO-66 MOF/CNT composites are successfully prepared using a simple solvothermal method. The high porosity and large specific surface area of the MOF provide multiple pathways for charge transport, significantly enhancing the probability of EMW reflection and scattering. Under the synergistic effect of CNTs, the conductivity loss and polarization relaxation loss of the composites increased, leading to improved impedance matching. With the combined influence of various attenuation mechanisms, the composites exhibit outstanding EMW absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss of −54.74 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 2.94 GHz at a thickness of 2.04 mm. Additionally, the radar cross section of the MOF/CNT composites was reduced by a maximum of 14.8 dB compared to that of a metal plate, demonstrating excellent practical application potential. Therefore, lightweight, ultrathin, and broadband high-efficiency absorption MOF/CNT composites held significant promise for widespread EMW absorption applications.

PVP Functionalized NH2-Ti-MOF Fluorescence and Colorimetric Sensor for Catechol

Jing Chen,Yaqin Shi,Wenli Xue,Wenjing Liu,Rongfang Ma

Catechol is an important fine chemical raw material, and is widely used in the production of chemicals. However, this compound has low degradability and high toxicity, and was highly susceptible to release into the environment during production and application, posing a potential threat to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, in this paper, a PVP-functionalized NH 2 -Ti-MOF was synthesized using PVP as a shape-controlling agent, NH 2 -BDC as an organic ligand, and TBOT as a metal source. A sensor for dual-mode detection of catechol was constructed based on the interaction between catechol and PVP-NH 2 -Ti-MOF. When catechol was added to the probe solution, the fluorescence intensity at 428 nm was found to decrease based on the static quenching effect. At the same time, it was found that a new ultraviolet absorption peak appeared at 282 nm in the ultraviolet absorption spectrum, and the absorption peak intensity increased with the increase of catechol concentration, thus realizing the dual mode detection of catechol. Compared with the single-mode sensor, the dual-mode sensor is more accurate, fast and sensitive, which provides a new idea for the detection of catechol in water samples.

Rational rigidity control in heterobimetallic MOF nanosheets for precise molecular sieving

Yanmei Li,Xitai Cai,Chunjie Chen,Libo Li,Yali Zhao,Wufeng Wu,Yanying Wei

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheet membranes are promising for H 2 purification because their highly tunable pore networks permit precise control of the sieving aperture. However, unavoidable linker rotation in MOFs impedes precise molecular sieving, with the impact further amplified in low-dimensional 2D nanosheets due to increased conformational freedom. Herein, we establish a rational rigidity-control strategy in heterobimetallic Zn (100-x) Co x (Bim)(OAc) nanosheets achieved by in-situ dual-metal integration. Moderate Co 2+ incorporation reinforces the framework rigidity while preserving structural integrity, which sharpens molecular sieving. At an optimal Co 2+ content of ∼30%, the Zn (100-x) Co x (Bim)(OAc) nanosheet membrane exhibits an exceptional H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 243, a 180% improvement over the more flexible Zn(Bim)(OAc) membrane. However, excessive Co 2+ incorporation induces structural disorder, demonstrating that an optimal balance between rigidity enhancement and structural integrity is crucial for maximizing separation performance, providing an opening avenue for rational design in 2D MOF nanosheet membranes.

Metal organic framework-801 based magnetic solid-phase extraction and its application in analysis of preterm labor treatment drugs

Tianfeng Wan,Wenqing Li,Zilin Chen

A novel magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method based on metal organic framework-801 (MOF-801) modified magnetic nanoparticles (noted as PEI-MNPs@MOF-801) was successfully prepared for the extraction of preterm labor treatment drugs (including indometacin, acemetacin and sulindac) from human plasma sample. MOF-801, a new kind of porous coordination polymer composed of Zr 4+ and fumaric acid, was modified on the surface of synthesized polyethyleneimine magnetic nanoparticles (PEI-MNPs) through amidation reaction. The obtained PEI-MNPs@MOF-801 was characterized with Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. A MSPE-HPLC-UV method was developed by coupling PEI-MNPs@MOF-801 with HPLC system. Several parameters that affect the extraction efficiency including acetonitrile content, NaCl content, extraction time and sample volume were investigated. Under optimum conditions, the proposed MSPE-HPLC-UV method showed high extraction efficiency (enrichment factors between 96–118), good linearity with R ≥ 0.9987, excellent reproducibility (RSD ≤ 4.30 %) and low limits of detection in the range of 0.03−0.05 ng/mL. This method was also successfully applied to the extraction of indometacin, acemetacin and sulindac in human plasma samples and good recoveries were obtained.

Separation of anionic dye mixtures b y Al-metal-organic framework filled polyacrylonitrile-ethanolamine membrane and its modified product

Yujie Li,Yixing Wang,Zhenying Liu,Luyao Jiang,Hu Yang,Zhenliang Xu

Molecular separation of dye mixtures containing the same charge remains a challenge. In the present study, we prepared a composite membrane that could efficiently separate anionic dye mixtures. Briefly, Al-Metal-organic framework (Al-MOF) nanoparticles synthesized by the ion-exchange method were used as fillers during the in-situ synthesis of ethanolamine (ETA) grafted polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane. The optimized composite membrane showed a high rejection of congo red (CR) from a single solution (96% rejection) and the CR/methyl orange (MO) mixture (93%/18%) solution. The flux of dye mixture solution reached 180 L m −2  h −1 , higher than many reports in the literature. The further modification on pore size (heat treatment) or surface charge (hydrolysis treatment) improved the membrane performance to separate smaller dye mixture of methyl blue (MB)/MO. Both modified membranes showed a good MB rejection (93%) and flux of 70–85 L m −2  h −1 . While for the separation of the MB/MO mixture, the heat-treated membrane showed the lowest flux and a middling rejection. The surface hydrolyzed membrane showed a better selectivity (96% MB/32% MO) and a higher flux (127 L m −2  h −1 ) than that of the entirety hydrolyzed membrane (93% MB/58% MO and flux of 78 L m −2  h −1 ), which was attributed to their different charge distribution.
